I loved Doc! I'm fortunate enough to have jammed with him several times, usually at Merlefest but also at various locations since I lived an hour away from him. I was just a kid really but it was a great experience! He was a real class act and could play any fuddle tune you threw at him and play it better than everyone in the circle lol. There is a statue of him sitting on a bench playing guitar in town in Boone NC that people can sit on and take pictures and such. Last time I was in the area I sat and played John Hardy for him. True legends never die!
@@TheGordeaux That's great ppl still show Doc the love he deserves! I've not been out that way in a few years thanks for that! It makes me happy ppl leave him flowers! He inspired so many fans and pickers alike!
I cant help checking back with Doc over the years and am enjoying having a crack at learning this . I don't know the history of Little Sadie but noticed that the lyric plot is very similar to Cocaine Blues by Johnny Cash.
When you play that tune, you start realizing that sometimes Doc verse unexpectedly last longer than it should actually be but Steve is still able to follow, showing his dedication listening to/supporting Doc
we're not supposed to compete with the giants, but we can be inspired by them. so grab that guitar and play a Doc Watson tune that makes you feel good and if you feel like you've hit your skill limits play something completely different. do it for yourself and not for the competition:) guitar is therapy for the soul.
I lost my pre war Gibson to….. well, I’ll just say I lost it as forgiveness is necessary. But in the mid-sixties, there wasn’t or weren’t too many other pickers to emulate and inspire. But what an inspiration to us all. I think of him every time I sit n’ pick and feel as if he’s right there with me. He was fond of saying “you gotta practice like the devil”, and my guitar hangin on the wall makes me feel guilty to not pick it up, so I do if for no other reason than just to soothe my soul.
Doc Watson, l first heard in 1970. Never knew guitar playing like that. Sounds like running water. Masterclass picking stile. l´m so grateful with all my heart for this video 💙💚 Blues and Greens!
Awesomness aside are these 'runs' they talk of simply exerts from the various musical scales that can be played on guitar? Like the pentatonic, major etc? Or are they fully custom licks he creates? Such an inspiration is Doc! Was introduced to his music through Townes and the old quarter album.
Just heard Billy Strings doing this so wanted to check out the man who originally sang it. Feel like there is a big resemblance in story line to cocaine blues by Johnny Cash! Not sure but feel like Doc had it first and Johnny spun off it to make a mint!?.?!
Kaufman is so generic and one line robotic no chord play/crosspick/hammers/pulls always straight 8th scale every note picked boring its OK to play a quarter note or repeat a note or leave space as a matter of fact Kaufmans performance was AWFUL no sense of lead rhythm AT ALL I can see it on Docs face. Kaufman asks Doc how does you do those runs Doc should have asked him do you not know how to do those runs?

What a wonderful story, thanks for sharing. I’ll have to visit that statue someday.
I love that statue. People still leave flowers there on Doc's birthday.

Doc’s playing was great but his singing voice was haunting and perfectly complimented his great playing.
"... just a feelin' that comes out my fingers."
Tell 'em how it is Doc.

The chord changes n run. So smooth. Incredible. 10 years n a lifetime to work on that. Maybe just scratch my guitar and dump it into the fireplace.

And now Doc has given us Billy Strings. He’s the gift that keeps on giving😇😇😇

Thank God For Doc Watson!
I love his comments about how he subconsciously makes his runs.
I love that smile at around 0:43 when doc says again.
Imagine playing guitar with Doc Watson he says again after a your solo. That has to be a great feeling!
@@DasaLetsPlay No doubt, if that were me I would probably tear up as well Doc is a legend.

Steve can shred and he knows it.
you know a person is good when they play the nastiest lick youve ever heard and they say "i didnt think about it, it just happens"

Both are related to an even older song first recorded in the 20s(?) by Riley Puckett as Chain Gang Blues

This vs the Cash version just hits different. This hits more of a western outlaw vibe vs Johnny's version that hits a scorned drug addict vibe
Inspiration for Johnny Cash’s cocaine blues ?
It just comes out 😂 trying to explain what it is to be a guitar hero just naturally , with more soul than James brown 😂
