friends introduced Doc to me in 1975...he's gone but I'm still a huge fan. Voice and pickin' so smooth, so perfect. So glad to live in this age when his music will never leave us.
great video, been a fan of doc since the early '50's , and am so happy that he continues to thrill people still, Doc is an icon, , and shady grove is one of his best
It sounds so easy and natural but the impact is immense. To me this is the inner core of music and what I always look for. Well done! I wish I could have experienced it live.
I am from east Tn and west nc . I am truly lucky that I don't remember a time with out doc. But I do remember when I realized that he was an amazing man to the world also. David Holt too is absolutely incredible. I'm 62 and cannot pick an apple. I do hope there are many following in there foot steps
I feel bad for the man. He really inspired me. Just because you can’t see does not mean you can’t be a famous musician. Rest In Peace, Docs. You will go to heaven.
His and Clarence Ashley's versions are undoubtedly the best. They gave music so much heart and soul, they were in my opinion two of the best folk/bluegrass players ever to walk the Earth. They may not have had the fastest or fanciest picking but the soul they gave this song alone tops all of the music we listen to today.
i would love to hear the folks play and sing this as fast, cleanly and smoothly with such a sincere mountain sound as Doc. I have been working on it about all my life and this is an pretty hard song to play one half as well as Doc and David do, I can tell you.
Been pondering the same thing. I think I've figured it out. It's the people we don't see in public but exist in the houses we drive by, which they never leave. I work EMS/fire and you'd be surprised at the amount of ppl who live in these houses we unknowingly pass by, that are in miserable conditions (on their own accord usually). We just don't see them in our daily "out and about". They hoard pets, pet crates, and fill their house til they can barely walk. And of course poo, etc. all over the floor. They're the ones disliking these 10/10 videos. All of um
Doc was a wonderful person; feel so blessed to have heard him at the Marion, VA theater a couple years ago. He is surely missed by many but we'll always have the memories!
My college roommates turned me on to Doc Watson (we even named our dog "Doc"). We went to one of his small venue concerts in Miami in the 70s. Then, when I was teaching English at a binational center in Bucaramanga, Colombia, David Holt came to give a concert sponsored by the embassy. I had the honor and privilege of sharing my apartment with him and his family for a few days (he loved the city and wanted to stay longer). He gave me and the center a banjo (I don't know what happened to it--I wish I still had it), and I learned to play it a little as I knew some guitar, tiple, and cuatro (ukulele). What a great guy and awesome musician.
Cheeks as red as a bloomin' rose and eyes as the prettiest brown She's the darlin' of my heart, sweetest little girl in town I wish I had a glass of wine and bread and meat for two I'd set it out on a golden plate and I'd give it all to you Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away (Banjo solo) When I was a little boy I wanted a Barlow knife And now I want little Shady Grove to say she'll be my wife A kiss from pretty little Shady Grove is sweet as brandy wine Ain't no girl in this whole world that's prettier than mine Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away (Guitar solo) There's peaches in the summer-time, apples in the fall If I can't have little Shady Grove, I don't want no gal at all I went to see my Shady Grove, she was standing in the door Shoes and stockings in her hands, and her little bare feet on the floor Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away (breakdown) I wish I had me a big ol' horse and grain to feed him on And little Shady Grove to stay at home and feed him while I'm gone I wish I had me a needle and thread, as fine as I can sew I'd sew my pretty gal to my side, and down the road we'd go Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away
Go listen to the old song Matty groves. I only discovered it the other day - it dates back to 15th century England or something cool like that. I found it because I realised doc also does a version of the original on his home again album. Pretty sweet.
Doc is awesome. So was his son Merle who was killed when a tractor flipped and crushed him . Merle was the best dobro slide guitarist ever . Miss ya bud
I've seen this one done in G with the most emphasis on the D minor more often than not. It walks up to a C chord and back down to the D minor chord over and over and over.
I've played this song for a while with and without others and I never see anyone playing in standard G tuning. It's always in A Aeolian (GDGCD). Then those chords you mentioned make more sense in that key.
The A-modal tuning (gDGCD, capo 2nd fret), works fine for this tune, but Doc Watson played his banjo version in gCGCD, out of C-minor first position (capoed to D-minor, or near that key). Dave Holt also plays it like this in the video. Regarding standard G-tuning (or A): If it is of interest, one major key version came from Kilby Snow on the Vestapol video named 'Shady Grove'. Boiled Buzzards & Crooked Jades recorded it, but it feels very different from the usual variants.
Yup ... I lived in Ann Arbor for several years and saw Doc play this about once a year ...10ft away at the Ark .... he played it in C Minor (Mountain Minor) on the banjo.
What a beautiful voice he has! So natural and unpretentious.
There has never been nor will there ever be a picker as smokin hot as Doc Watson. Rest easy in that shady grove, Doc.
Billy Strings is trying hard.
@@jasmadams yep...he could be the "next" Doc Watson. more exact: Doc-Jerry Garcia mix

It's great to hear a legend play a beautiful song.
Doc is an American treasure, and one that is not gathering dust. He's out there, and still singing and playing!
RIP

Same. 😊
God bless him for staying with his roots. He had the talent to have done anything else. What a master.
Watch this at 0.75 and listen to how romantic and gorgeous this rendition is - so technical but desperately beautiful phrasing
Burried my grandmother recently in Shady Grove cemetery near a small town in SC.
"Hit me with a brick, I didn't have no sense." RIP Doc. Love you Sir.
There is no one in the world like Doc. How could someone not like this video? I use to do this for my classes to sing.
I wish he were still around. One of the rare ones.
great video, been a fan of doc since the early '50's , and am so happy that he continues to thrill people still, Doc is an icon, , and shady grove is one of his best
I think we love hearing Doc's stories almost as much as we love his picking. 😊
It sounds so easy and natural but the impact is immense. To me this is the inner core of music and what I always look for.
Well done! I wish I could have experienced it live.
I just saw their show tonight in Minneapolis. At 87, he's still great.
God given beautiful voice, true guitar stylist with brilliant technique, charm on stage, taste in repertoire, and soul!

Absolutely the best vocals and instrumentation I've heard on Shady Grove! Doc is the Doc 😊
This is a man of music & God, what a great gifted soul ! God love you Doc ~!
Best version I have ever heard!!
I feel bad for the man. He really inspired me. Just because you can’t see does not mean you can’t be a famous musician. Rest In Peace, Docs. You will go to heaven.
that little slide he hits on way up to the D at the top of the melody is so nice
I could watch Doc pick for hours. Thank you Sir!

The greatest bluegrass guitar player who ever lived. This is just magical.

Love this song. I can't stop listen to it !
Shady Grove has been a favorite of mine for 20 years. But it's never been played & performed like Doc Watson does it. What a beautiful voice & talent!
Thank you for this post Doc is a legion in folk bluegrass and blues.
God bless and keep this wonderful man in peace. You will be verily missed Doc.
Great performance.

There's peaches in the summer-time, apples in the fall
If I can't have little Shady Grove, I don't want no gal at all
I went to see my Shady Grove, she was standing in the door
Shoes and stockings in her hands, and her little bare feet on the floor
Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say
Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away
(breakdown)
I wish I had me a big ol' horse and grain to feed him on
And little Shady Grove to stay at home and feed him while I'm gone
I wish I had me a needle and thread, as fine as I can sew
I'd sew my pretty gal to my side, and down the road we'd go
Shady Grove, My little love, Shady Grove, I say
Shady Grove, My little love, I'm bound to go away
It's the I'm bound to go away part that always made this a mournful song for me.

One day I asked my father that if Doc ever came to town, could we go see him. My dad said yes. But about a month later he died so thats a shame
I'm singing this song in choir and the words are soooo different(: haha
I have atleast 3 books going over fiddle tunes and banjo tunes and none of them have the same lyrica or melody for this song
rest in peace brother
Learning this on my ukulele ❤️

No, I believe the American version of Matty Groves is called "Matty Groves" and Doc Watson also does that one. Great version too.
if he'd have said this in 2024 he's have been cancelled. They have been together half a century.
music starts at 1:16 (mostly a reminder for myself
