Without a doubt, thus far. RIP Tony you sight an extremely high standard. Thank you for your contributions eternally. These tunes will Carry on in media for an eternity.
You mean the age of the guitar?how it sounds because it dried with age?im not being funny ive never heard it called that,if thats what you’re referring to…
Tony has had a beautiful 2003 black on black Mustang Cobra vert for years. and while I grew up listening to his music and cherish it. Ill never forget the sound his cobra made as the supercharger would whine as he drove past our house just a few doors down from his house...my dad and I would just look at each other back then smile and say..."there goes Tony again." He will truly be missed...condolences to his wife Pam and the rest of the Rice family!
He was one of those guitarists that had no wasted movement in his fret hand (or pick hand for that matter). That’s one of the subtle signs of someone who has mastered their craft. RIP
You are right. I had the pleasure of listening and watching both masters, Tony and Norman Blake together at a small venue in St Petersberg, Fl in the mid- '90s. Rice's right-hand movement was primarily at the wrist while Blakes was somewhat more fluid from the elbow. Watch the New River Train video of them playing together to see the two styles.
You know, listening to the interview, what jumps out at me is that not only is he technically highly proficient, and passionate about his work, but also has a deep and insightful intellect about the instrument and about music as an art form. Absolutely brilliant musician and human being.
To have been young and alive when you were in your prime as a master musician… what a privilege that was. Loved your music, your approach, your demeanor, your seriousness towards the music but not yourself. Never forgotten Tony Rice!!!
This was my first time ever hearing or seeing this man play...WHY?? There's something very wrong with the world when talent like this isn't a household name. At least not a household name to me. You can't hide imperfections playing acoustically, there's no Distortion or gain, just your fingers and the strings. This man sounds like he was born with an acoustic in his hands. Blown away. What a beautiful song.
I agree with you that the music world hides players like Tony Rice (and others). I think it's done as a cruel joke. Although, I had seen and heard him play a few years ago. I'm also blown away by his talent. And yes, It's a beautiful song.
Love this comment because it makes me realize the different realities we all live in. Tony's been a "household name" in houses around me for 3 decades and i thought I was late to the game. Still remember the first time I heard his break in Key Signator with DGQ (ua-cam.com/video/p4lanty5LAw/v-deo.html) Great to hear someone just discovering him, and the treasure trove of material they have to immerse themselves in.
These guitarists you've all mentioned were/ are quite simply brilliant at what THEY DO, to compare them...well...? Just my thoughts for what it's worth 😊😊😊
A true master of musical arts. Rest in peace. Your music has seen me through some hard times. You've made me want to pick my guitar up, made me want to put it down, and made me want to break it. But you'll always be a friend.
I've been playing guitar for 30 years and just discovered this guy. Better late then never, I'd like to think. I can't believe how clear and accurate his fretting is on an accustic guitar. So fast and so clear. That guitar must have great action that's set up custom just for him , of course . Even so, that is very difficult with an acustic. But this guy is flawless. He constantly mixes chords and scales typical in jazz ,,but even the best jazz players hit a dead note once in a while. This guy is perfect. So glade I found this. Thanks for posting it. Very impressive
I’ve been playing for two years, and had I not started, I would not care less about this. Now? Discovery of him is like uncovering gold under your bed!
We have excellent taste in instrumentalists, don't we all❤? -- these comments 📝 say it all-- you know someone's a master when they have instructional videos!
I had the honor of performing at a few events Tony was billed at. I was on a secondary stage somewhere, but I always went and listened to him at every opportunity. He was the very best PERIOD.. I actually talked to him a few times, and he was a class act all the way around.
There will really never be anyone that will play an acoustic guitar with such delicate, precise flatpicking and pure intimate polished beauty. RIP Mr, Rice
nellatrab: There is a young man out there known as "Billy Strings". Don't be fooled by his youth. He's the real deal all the way down the line. Awesome picker, good singer. The flatpicking world will live on because of him and Molly Tuttle. Give them a try, I think you'll like what you hear.
I saw him do this at Bass Hall in Fort Worth a number years ago. After a break with his group he came out by himself and did this. You could hear a pin drop. Mesmerizing.
Good God, that was one of the most beautiful solo's I've ever heard. Rest in peace brother, I hope I can attend one of your concerts in heaven some day.
This guy is the Doc Brown of guitar . Simply amazing that someone’s brain can comprehend this much guitar knowledge and put it to use with rhythm and picking and the finger work up and down the neck
Tony, Leslie, Eddie, all left us this year,,3 different styles ,each brilliant in their own way , gonna be one hellacious power trio wherever they may be
I’ve only just discovered this man - in fact this is the first time I’ve heard him play and I wasn’t expecting to come to tears out of a guitar video. Such an earthly sound and exceptional mastery. Rest in peace fellow!
Billy Strings is coming up right behind Tony. I miss him greatly. His contribution to bluegrass was nothing short of genius. I always thought that a prodigy like Tony only occured once in a lifetime. I was pleasantly please when Billy came along.😊
Tony Rice will and has always been one of the greatest musicians that I've had the pleasure to listen and watch on recordings, live. Excellency ❤ on 6 strings.
tony rice, norman blake, doc watson , great heroes of country bluegrass and dawg flat picking guitar music in the eighties and ninties,,thanks to these fantastic players for their music!!look at the fantastic martin d28 owned by Clarence White before rice, ciao from Italy.
R.I.P. the best guitarist in bluegrass history
Without a doubt, thus far. RIP Tony you sight an extremely high standard. Thank you for your contributions eternally. These tunes will Carry on in media for an eternity.
@@ronaldpetrin5823 no doubt the smoothest and best Guitarist in the world loved the man RIPTony
Joshua Allen He was and will remain a national treasure
I wanna call it bluejazz, or jazzgrass, but yes, so far
One of the best... in guitar history.
Best flat picker ever. Unbelievable tone and that “antique” is priceless.
You mean the age of the guitar?how it sounds because it dried with age?im not being funny ive never heard it called that,if thats what you’re referring to…
Take a look at the hand split bracing that you can get a glimpse of inside that guitar.
After all that guitar has been through, it's amazing just how good the craftsmen were who worked on it. It still has that great, great, D-28 sound.
“I can try to.” Then proceeds to absolutely crush it! Genius

God bless Tony and Pam and India. My eyes are wet.
That's a cool memory to have!! RIP Tony
Then , the silence after he passed on, must've been difficult to adjust to.Thx for that anecdote.
@parallaxcontinuum7898 lots of things remind me of Tony, but seeing a cobra always makes me smile.
That’s awesome you knew him man.how cool.huge respect to him👊
He was one of those guitarists that had no wasted movement in his fret hand (or pick hand for that matter). That’s one of the subtle signs of someone who has mastered their craft. RIP
You got that right. His fingers always stayed close to the fretboard.

His picking hand is a clinic in economy of movement. RIP
Yep. He's just gliding and saying exactly what he wants to say with his fretting hand. It is speaking freely.
Knew more chords than Mel Bay.. The song has ended..But his melody still lingers..RIP Tony and thanks for the incredible music!
Lol that’s funny🙃,knew more chords than Mel Bay

This is the most worthless boomer comment I've ever seen on the internet, there's so much to unpack. I'm not even mad I'm impressed.

@Matt Riley Thank you, my new friend, for not roasting me due to my unintentional ignorance.
The best guitar player that ever lived! When he plays shenandoah it’s so hard to hold back the tears...
Don't know if he's the best but he's dam good. No actually fantastic.
He's good but he's no django
@@davidwalker5054 and Django was no Tony Rice. That goes both ways.

Arguably not only one of the finest flatpickers that ever lived, but one of the best all around players that ever lived.
No words...the loss of Tony Rice is just too much.
He ain't lost. He went home
RIP, Tony, you'll be sorely missed
Wonderful! RIP Tony. Died too young!
He was one of the greatest musicians I ever heard play. Not just guitarists, but ALL musicians.
A true master of musical arts. Rest in peace. Your music has seen me through some hard times. You've made me want to pick my guitar up, made me want to put it down, and made me want to break it. But you'll always be a friend.

Brilliant guitarist, great comment.
I remember him back in the 80's with the David Grisman quartet. Wonderful music...
yeah...some of the work he did with David Grisman is absolutely legendary...that Hot Dawg album rules for sure.
I’ve been playing for two years, and had I not started, I would not care less about this. Now? Discovery of him is like uncovering gold under your bed!
Wow, look how smoothly he transitions between chords. Absolute master player.
First time hearing him play. No wonder I've read such accolades. Brilliant.

A consummate master of his instrument, love his reply when asked to show how to play Shenandoah he replies " I can try to"......understatement.
A very humble man. He never forgot about his fans.
What a pleasantly humble reply RIP
What a try it was😊
God, his right and left hands moved like magic. Masterfully executed, to appear easy and effortless to the unaware. RIP Legend
Sad that Tony died. I never had the opportunity to see him live. I'll never forget his famous work.
Massively influential. You will be missed. RIP Great One

In tears tonight listening to this
Me too friend , me too.
Unreal. No one has the right hand Tony has. It's the pinnacle of right-hand technique. The left hand is top-level too, but that right hand. Wow.
technical perfection, without compromising the "soul " of the tune.. what an exceptional musician he was...
R.I.P. Tony and thanks for all the great playing.

That playing was so clean I could eat off it!
That 1935 Martin D-28 with the enlarged soundhole is the definition of a cannon, Tonys talent and that guitar are the perfect marriage.
It was Clarence White's guitar before Tony had it. It has a very storied history. Only someone like Tony deserved to play it.
And now priceless
D-28 with a bounded fretboard? 🤔
He could play this on a piece of shit guitar and it would sound great ✌🏼
Tony's wife recently allowed Billy Strings to play it on stage. Did a helluva Freeborn Man with it among others.
RIP Tony....You will be missed but never forgotten!
No one ine talks about his singing. He had a great voice!!❤ Miss you TR. RIP.
More chords in one song than most will ever play!
God blessed this man, and blessed us to be able to hear his music. Thank u T.R. Thank u.
Couldn't have said it better myself...
Not just the chords, it's what he does with them that makes this rendition so moving. He's the flat picking equivalent of Chet Atkins.
That's one of the prettiest things I've ever heard.
Other worldly beautiful. RIP Mr. Rice.
I saw him do this at Bass Hall in Fort Worth a number years ago. After a break with his group he came out by himself and did this. You could hear a pin drop. Mesmerizing.
Effortless, smooth and inventive. If I had 10% of his talent....
The smoothness of the chord changes are mind blowing.
Hopefully the guitar goes into hall of fame. Rip mr Rice- an inspiration.

Same here fellow Kilgore 🙏
Amazing Rip legend 🙏
Just gorgeous and incredible....
Tony ( RIP) took flat picking to a new level, and his playing is effortless and beautiful , watch how relaxed he is ...amazing !!!
how... how have I not heard of this legend until today??? WOW! unreal talent and musical ear
If you have never heard Rice's rendition of "John Wilkes Boothe" I would urge you to do so. It was written by Mary Chapin Carpenter.
There are many excellent guitar players in bg history. But his tone and sound is absolutely and undoubtedly the best.
What a maestro. Never has been so smooth on acoustic guitar and I say this after listening to so many greats.
This is so freaking good! TONE TONE & MORE TONE!
This is SO AWESOME. Amazing playing.
Tony was so fabulous in all of his recordings with special advance guitar playing
He tuned better by ear than I do with a tuner!
This is pure creativity, God bless.
He was the greatest ever! RIP !!
So this is my first introduction to Tony Rice, wow. Where have I been for 24 yrs of playing.
6 string salute to you Mr. Rice. Thank you!
Just learned of this wonderful player from Molly Tuttle's video.....so freaking talented, gorgeous music from this man's hands.
The absolute BEST to ever hold a guitar. There are many great pickers but there will never be another Tony Rice. Miss you much😢
And a great voice in his younger years
Perfect is the one word that comes to mind... rip
Tony was one of a kind
