my dad is the “i haven’t played in like 9 years” guy lmao. I’m learning and everytime he picks up the guitar to show me something he always says “Man, i can’t play so good anymore, gout in my hand always gets in the way.” and then he plays the most beautiful piece you’ve ever heard in your life
I am the guy who plays all his favorite parts of his fav songs but never plays a song in its entirety, just goes on like a riff compilation video on youtube

My oldest son and his friends would do that, playing their favorite parts of songs. Only they all played something different, and all at once. I finally banned them from playing in my garage.

Why is that annoying? Is there an obligation for guitarists to play in font of an audience? I attended piano and trombone lessons for some eight years when I was young and I hated when there was a compulsory once a year performance. It was one of the things that made me finally quit.

I purposely play stairway to heaven in guitar stores just to annoy everyone. I know other songs. It’s just more fun to watch everyone suffer.
Stairway got replaced by the entire ouvre of Metallica in the early 00's. I don't know what they do today. After two years in music instrument retail, I did my level best to stay away.
Worse, the guy who plays the Smoke on the Water riff, but that's it, doesn't actually know what key it's in, or which chord to play after the intro.

Then Chad grabs the guitar and busts out a hacked up version of Wonderwall and everyone's having a great time. And you're thinking "why didn't I just do that?". Not every good musician is also a good performer, it's just a personality thing. I learned this long ago so now I just play because I enjoy it, not to entertain people. :)

You forgot the Rockstar. I remember a guy in a local Zeppelin cover band who thought he was Jimmy Page and wouldn't help the band setup for gigs or tear down after, or even help drive to the gigs. The Avant-garde Snob really is accurate, I played a part in a guitar ensemble piece by a contemporary composer which used custom notation (aka virtually unreadable without first memorising all the custom note heads etc), and it was just like how you demonstrate

I'm a decent bassist but i have difficulties breathing when i play (basically unless i focus really hard i breathe in synch with every note i play and it's annoying as shit with fast songs) so sometimes i sing, I'm kinda shite at it tho 😂
