Excellent review. I own the 2210 and the 2205 (bought in the 80s) as well as (2) 5150s original block letter I ordered new. The 2205 (50W)and 2210 (100W) were top of the line Marshall amps in their day and had TWO firsts for Marshall: Effects Loop and spring Reverb (Accutronics). As you clearly demonstrated, these Marshall's aren't made for just 80's and 90's rock - these are extremely versatile amps.
I for one dig a little Marshall spring reverb with my Rockman stereo echo - the amp's reverb fills in that little space between the echo pongs. Diode overdrive - Tom Scholz was first to use diode overdrive and Marshall came out with it later - but to me, that diode helps drive the 12AX7 triode tubes to more distortion. Great job on the vid and best of luck on your album!

very good assessment of the JCM 2210. Euge, I love your videos !!!
What I don't understand is why so many people on UA-cam compare the Marshall 2210 with the 2203 and use the Boost Channel??
Because the 2210 uses diodes in the boost channel for more gain, it is to be expected that the sound will be different than the 2203.
Why doesn't anyone watch the Normal Channel ? There are no diodes there. And that's not a clean channel as many people always say, but the normal channel of a JCM 800.
So set the volume in the normal channel to 8-10, be careful with the master volume, position 8:30 a.m. will be quite loud. The difference to the 2203 is no longer big. Try it out.
I own both amps, a 2203 from 1981 and a 2210 from 1987. The 2210 sounds more like the 2203 in the Normal Channel than many other amps that try to copy that sound. At least that's the case with my 2210 ;-)

Great playing...as always! I must have missed this review somewhere a long the way. I have a 1989 2210 that I picked up a few years ago because the price was right. Since then I've had a love-hate relationship with it. As a reference, I'm comparing it to my 1972 Super Lead and 1984 4104 which are more similar to each other than to the 2210 which is totally different. To me the Super Lead rules the roost and the 4104 is really, really good too. The 2210 feels very different and sounds less organic with a different type of bass and midrange with less of the treble signature you think of when it comes to vintage Marshall amps. Although, it does sound a lot better when you turn it up, but then it's way too loud to be usable for my needs. Mine has no channel bleed what so ever which after watching your review, I wish it had. The 2210 has a heavier, more compressed sound which can sound pretty good with some serious tweaking. Since I use pretty low output pickups ('57 Classics and Custombuckers) adding a clean boost (Wampler dB+) helps a lot. Cheers!

    New song is groovy! 😎
Back in `86, a lot of players were using a ProCo RAT in front of those JCM800's. I wonder if that "clipping diode" in there is the same one used in a RAT pedal? 🤔 I think I would look into modding the amp to bypass that clipping diode, and then just use an SD-1 in front of it.

  • @joen5970
    @joen5970 Рік тому +3

Marshall changed the preamps sometime in 1986 due to channel bleed. 2210s from before this change also sound slightly different.
I don't really understand the bad name of 2210s. If I may believe the "connoisseurs" they are only mediocre amplifiers because they have diodes in the preamplifier. But from a Jose mod, the same connoisseurs pretty much cum on the spot. Not to mention putting a drive pedal in front of the amp... I understand that some prefer a 2203/2204 circuit and others prefer a 2205/2210, but the negative stories about 2205s/2210s is mainly copied from the internet.
Many Marshall "connoisseurs" also give off on the "clean" channel. But it is not a clean channel at all. It is a gain channel that you can get fairly clean by turning the volume of the channel back a bit. That's why it's called "normal channel" and not "clean channel". If you turn up the channel volume, it is even a bit of a plexi-like channel.
If you put a little time into a 2210 they are very good amplifiers. But many of the connoisseurs do not know how to set up a 2210 properly because they expect it to work the same as a 2203.

    • @ericandrews1661

I've built a couple of amps. I built a Ceriatone 2204 clone and a Ceriatone BE-100 Deluxe clone. All of these amps are basically the same. Super simple circuit with maybe 40 components. The BE is a bit more complex but only has duplicate signal paths to choose so it's just more not more complicated. I encourage anyone with a little sense and ability to get into amp modding and learning to understand what makes a good amp sound good. To me it's mostly about the pickups, tubes and the caps and the speakers. As you see with Euge here he gets basically the same sound no matter what he plays through. Any good amp should get you there with the correct pickups, overdrive and technique.

I have the 50W version of an earlier production year but was surprised how different that one sounded. Have you tried pushing the "clean" channel cranked with an overdrive? I believe the amp was built in that way because during that time the "jose mod" became quite popular which involved adding a clipping diode to the classical jcm 800 version. On my amp I get closer to the classic jcm800 sound when using a SD-1 and cranked clean channel. I only engage the "boost" channel on solos. Great video!

The Marshall JCM800 2205 / 2210 LEAD channel switch reverb amplifiers were the flagship model of the range, and the most common and wanted JCM800, at least here in Europe, as it may sounded miles better with real Mullard EL34 tubes and 220 volts, as these amps were built for, as well as the Drake transformers.

I got that you used chorus, overdrive, reverb and then you wrote pitch phaser or something, is that a normal phaser pedal?

I kind of wished that I had mine from 1987.
Then I could have it modded at Tommy Folkesson for an overall better sound and get rid of the diod clipping so the tubes do the real work.

Just with vocals since the songs were written with vocals in mind, and with vocalists. To me they’re just a bunch of riffs tied together without vocals. Pretty good bunch of riffs but they’re not complete songs without vocal melodies and lyrics.

I own the 2205 and am not the biggest fan, I found my TSL and 6100LM to sound closer to an 800 than the actual 2205. If you ever can get your hands on a 6100 Anniversary series, please do a comparison to the bad boy. Cheers.

If the DI output is bypassed these amps are less compressed and have more of a 2203 top end. If you remove the clipping diodes and don't use the reverb, which is an average reverb that preamp tube can easily be wired in for more gain. The one your demoing is a darker sounding one, if the presence and treble on mine are too high it becomes wat too bright.

  • @Lavabug
    @Lavabug Рік тому +1

Maybe this amp would sound closer to the 2203 with a change of the presence circuit to get more sizzle.

The one problem with this video is that the versions of this amp, starting with '87 and after fixed the channel bleed issues and improved the circuitry in ways I'm not qualified to explain. A quick google search will show that the '87 to end of production versions of this amp are more sought after because they sound better as a result. I wouldn't buy a pre '87 version of this amp. I have an '88 and it sounds amazing.

My guitar teacher had the combo version. He sold it to buy a Mark V 😡.
To be completely honest, I don't like how it sounds for rhythm, too thick and smooth, not enough top end cut, but I do play thrash & death metal. I would absolutely use it for leads though - the same characteristics that make it less than adequate for chugging are what make it perfect for single note playing, so I'd have it alongside a JCM2000DSL for rhythm. And a Fender Twin for cleans 😂 cuz Marshall always sucked at clean tones.

I've been unlucky to have owned 2 of those. Thin, buzzy, solid state type gain. No balls, 100 watts with balls of 20 watts. Yes, changed all tubes, biased, tried different yltubes, speakers. It was only Marshall that sounded even worse the higher you turned it up.

I had a 1983 2203 but it had no JCM800 logo. The logo was JMP.
It maybe not an identical circuit, but I believe it probably is, the 2203 JCM 800s is really just a rebranded 2203 JMP.
They just rebranded the amps later to JCM 800.
And that to me means The Real JCM800s are the 2205 and 2010.
    The 2203 and 2204 JCM800s are JMPs.
I had a friend who bought a used 2210 and 4x12 (not sure of speakers) $1000 Canadian in 1998.
I still have the receipt for my 2203 JMP. I bought it used in 1992 for $395 Canadian. So cheap because everyone was playing wierd Fender guitars and shittty amps for Grunge 🤣
