4:14 Pete: I'll try not to use any reverb. 40 seconds later... here is a little reverb 😂
Came here to say that lol
Me too @@sjftech
You were the first one who said it but I was the first one who thought it 🤪
Well done that man😂😂😂😂😂😂 @@Herr_Leinweber
Marshall has one of the most beautiful clean sounds I ever heard.
Im gonna say it: marshall has better cleans for my ears than vox or fender. I find fender and vox too icepicky
@@Squall6575 right. I tend to agree with that, specially with the Vox part. However, tweed fender with 12" speakers or a multiple 10"s have gorgeous cleans as well (im excluding the champ - just because of volume).
The JTM studio is killer for the price ! the victory a little harsh for my ears .
Those are my favorite type of Andertons videos. To my ears the deputy had the most clarity and note definition in all tests, loved the mids of the big Marshall too
US pricing as of Feb. 21 the Marshall Studio is $1750, the Marshall JTM45 is $2999, the Tone King is $2495, Victory Deputy is $1499, and the Friedman Little Sister is $1499.
Criminal lol
In the EU we feel the same with US amps, we get it. ;)
Oh my god, buy the friedman, of course. It's handwired and a crazy good deal. Marshall have lost their way with the move to Vietnamese transformers anyway
Put them through the bin and buy a toneX for some quid. F** those crap.
@@ricardorodrigues4277 mate you need to go back to school
Pete's config on the Little Sister sounded the best to me of the bunch.
The JTM45 2245 reissue sounds the best to me. I went in wanting it to be the Royalist and expecting to find the JTM45 to be too harsh. Turned out to be quite the opposite to my ears. Too bad they cost so much more in the US 😥
The two Marshalls still sounded the best to me. The little studio is the main winner for considering the price. I have the SV20H (the 1959spl version) and its such an amazing amp. Also, the fact you guys played over Greenbacks is a good choice imo. That raspiness and flub is what its all about!
I'm sorry but the clean sound coming out of the real JTM at the end was just the best, wow!
The victory deputy captured the best clarity to me. Im impressed with that little amp. Great job, guys.
Do you own shares too 😀
I played on a JTM45 with a strat and I had a blast, it's a wonderful amp, with a clean sound of breathtaking beauty
Fantastic comparison video ! Thanks guys !
Special mention for Pete's playing so beautiful !
Absolutely fantastic playing Pete. So classy.
Just got the Tone King along with matching 1x12 cab! What a stellar amp! Just killer!!
So its a win for the Marshalls: I need flub and lots of it (historically its a significant component of what makes a 'traditional' valve sound). But of course you can always turn the bass down.
Always bugs me on demo’s of this kind of circuit where they just crank it but don’t adjust the EQ ie. Kill the bass, get the treble and presence up and then talk about the flubbiness or it sounds like a muddy mess and they proclaim how “awesome” it sounds. 😂
The JTM45 all day for me.
Me too, but we may be very oldschool.😂
There’s no problem with liking your own product, as long as the ownership is stated (which it was). Nice shoot out and top playing from Pete as usual.
I think I agree with the Captain! I liked the Royalist the best and right after the Marshall JTM Studio one. The JTM46 sounded awesome clean!
Thanks for another great video! I have a JTM45 but I’m really thinking about getting the Deputy! It sounds awesome!
Keep on rockin’ ! 🤘🎩
Noooooo...... you don't really want a tinny sounding V. Stay loyal to the original and still best.
I was fortunate enough to obtain a Metropoulos JTM45 7 years ago for under $1500. These amps are rare in that it is very difficult to find them for sale. That amp is fantastic and I would love it if you guys can find one and compare it with your current options. Great stuff and keep it coming.🤟
This comparison reaffirmed my satisfaction with my Marshall SV20H Studio Vintage 20/5-watt. Now I wouldn't mind owning that Tone King also.
After all was said and done, there's nothing like a dialed in Marshall. Good and OG. That Friedman was killer too. Great video as always guys. Cheers from the states.
I've been dying for this video!!
Great stuff as always
The Tone King was by far the best sounding amp in this shootout imo. He got that amp a couple of months ago but this is the first video it has been shown in since that unboxing video. I hope they start using it more in videos cause it’s literally the best sounding amp of any amp I’ve heard on this channel
I just got one along with the open back 1x12 cab. Stellar amp!! Just amazing!!
JTM45 is probably my favourite clean tone ever - I like Fender too, but every time I plug into a JTM45, my entire body goes: "Yes, this is where a live".
I am of the same opinion as you, a jtm45 in clean sound with a strat is one of the most beautiful clear sounds that exist
isn't the jtm45 really close to a Fender Bassman? That's why it's got great clean tone.
Great show guys and love how you did the comparisons! Surprised how I thought I’d prefer the JTM45 rather than the 20, but instead much prefer the 20. I thought the EL based amps would have too much top end for my tastes and you confirmed that. And in America Marshall prices are straight robbery. Would love to see more comparisons such as this!
The Tone King is worth every penny, love that sound.
Yess awesome comparison. Thanks!
JTM45 is my favourite, bluesy to the hills. Wonderful…….
Hills bee bluesy with tha sounds of blusey
Kinda like a Bassman?? EXACTLY a Bassman other than the parts that that were hard to get in GB in the early 60's -- and the smart idea of using 12's in a CLOSED box.
Thank you for these comparative tests and materials of all kinds. It's always very friendly and informative and allowed me to know and want to buy equipment that I would probably never have tried on my own like the Poly Verbs or understand the interest of certain effects. I wish you 60 more years l,,/
Love these amp shoot out vids 👍. Lee @ 42:11 "Holy Mother of..." I frequently say the same thing when I play the little sister 😂
Just had these tested last week in Guitar Guitar Esher and I ended up purchasing the Victory for the all round package and sound. The Tone King did sound slightly better but lacked an effects loop which is essential for me. My Les Paul and 335 Block sound absolutely awesome through this little Victory head, I can recommend and I have no shares in the company! 😆
JTM45 wins overall to my ears because of its more low end. Anyway, all these amps are lovely.
Running the normal channel a few notches lower than the high treble is the key with JTM45's. Cool amps.
Yup
Honestly, for the price, Marshall is a great value to sound like Marshall! €720 (excl. VAT) for the ST20H makes it very hard to justify getting something else. €1520 (excl. VAT) for the Little Sister is just.. bonkers. Yeah, it has more features and is handwired but I just don't care about that. Some argue that PCB is superior anyway. And a lot of people already have attenuators/loadboxes anyway so having a MV doesn't really matter for many.
Is 20w and a 1x12 cab loud enough to cut through over a drummer and bassist? If so do you even have any clean headroom left at that point? It sounds great but I'm skeptical
The Friedman is PCB too, and in the US it's $250 cheaper than the Marshall Studio. In the UK it's a no brainer but over here it's a different story. Shame too because the Marshall sounds better to me.
I’ve seen a handfull of little sisters’ on reverb for around 900 usd. the build quality is better from what I hear when compared to budget marshalls.
You have to play and hear them. I went through loads of amps Orange, Marshall ( including the HW re issue 1964) , Fender, Vox etc and was never happy. Then I played a Dirty Shirley and a Morgan Ac20 these are now my go to amps. But it’s what you want and horses for courses. PS these videos are great but they do not portray the amp you have to play it yourself.
@@pCeLobsterpretty sure the Friedman is an eyelet board construction, which is quite different to a PCB. Friedman does use PCB (on the Runt series) but I don’t believe it does on this more expensive amp.
just seeing this now, this is going to be good. 🎉
In a way, I think you having a part of victory helps because it allows you to influence design and so far the designs have been amazing. I own six of the amplifier products and just ordered the deputy. Keep up the great work on those. I think you have a right to make as much money and do it anyway you choose and I don’t think in any of the videos I’ve ever seen that you have chosen victory over another amplifier and shootouts, or nor have you mentioned them as a matter of fact, you’ve usually shout about Friedman more than anyone 3:23
Friedman for me ;) 42:06 is where you got me. Nice warm and fat but still tight in the bass with a percussive, snappy tone and a sweet top end. Love it. But there really is something to the JTM 45 clean tone ... considering one for studio recording
just for that particular sound. Great Comparison
I'd be really interested to see a comparison between the ST20 and the Origin :)
Cool shootout! They sound all great. If I could I would like to have all of them!!! So it’s so hard to decide which of them will be the next invest 🙈. Stay tuned - greetings from Germany
I've tried the Studio JTM, Friedman Little Sister, Dirty Shirley Mini, and Friedman Pink Taco 20 (first version). The Studio JTM cleans were good, great crunch sounds, but the drive sounds weren't the best, reminded me a little of a Fender Hot Rod. The Little Sister and Dirty Shirley Mini to my ears was like the JTM high treble channel with great sounding drive. If you want dark cleans from the Little Sister or Dirty Shirley Mini, forget it - too bright. With the Pink Taco, turn up the bass, turn down the treble and mids, turn down the gain and guitar volume, turn up the master volume and there it is - wonderful dark cleans. The drive sounds are what you expect of a Friedman - amazing. The Pink Taco 20 is now the amp I own, it does bright and dark cleans, it does crunch, it does rock, it does metal. Great amp. I've never tried Pink Taco V2 but I've read it's brighter than version 1 which is a shame as I think the original had the right balance, at least for my tastes.
The big advantage with Friedman is they have an excellent master volume control so no attenuation required.
On every occasion, the Victory came in last for me, lacking mids. Tone King was very good every time - well balanced sound.
I was not very familiar about Tone King though I have seen them on occasion. Think I need to do more digging on Tone King because it sounded amazing.
this video is exquisite
The Tone KIng is by far the overall winner for me, but out of my price range. The Marshal Studio and Victory were tied for 2nd place IMHO and *affordable to me. The Victory wins between those two simply because it has reverb. Good demo.
Yeah that studio sounds really great!
Great vid! Wich box do you use to plug all those heads into the Ox box?
The victor sounds awesome! Best pick for me and price ! Tone king is great but ridiculously expensive considering how similar in sound to the others
The Tone King sounds so good. Wow! Holy cow! In this case it sounds like you get what you pay for. …at least in the edge of break up range.
I was rooting for the lower priced ones. Dang it!
I'm still surprised when people are surprised by Marshall clean tones - the clean tones at the end are absolute perfection! Don't be afraid to say you love the Victory (I know the Internet is a toxic place) but geez it sounded good!
For the money, Just get the Marshall! Sounded amazing!
Amp shootouts are the best
The deputy was obviously the most "tinny" thin sounding of the bunch. All good amps but I'll take the Friedman.
The JTM45 sounds best to my ears, it has more mids.
Mr Captain Lee
The JTM 2245 Is bright all the way to ca. Volume 7on high treble channel . Then the Bright Cap goes away.
All Marshall's Sounds best IMO at Volume 6-8 and use Volume on Guitar for Clean
Once again, I say that I'm using the sv20 since it came out and it's a great clean amp that takes pedals very well. I'm eyeing the studio jtm tho just because I am curious
That jtm studio sounds amazing
They all sound great, but of those options, the Tone King sounded the best to me. (The Marshall sounded darker and the Victory sounded thinner) However, I can usually get JTM sounds I prefer even more out of a Soldano using the low gain blue channel. But you can’t go wrong with any of them.
Tone king wins for me. The JTM when it was clean sounded amazing though.
I’m a Friedman fan. U can get great low volume sounds out of them without attenuating
The ultimate home amps. Fortunately I discovered this.
me too@@Triple55555
Cool I’m kind of infatuated with the little sister, I’ve gotten rid of my big tube amps and use mostly digital, I need that thing.
@@jonthehermit8082 you won’t regret it, pull the trigger. Nothing like a solid amp that you can play at genuine bedroom volume or genuinely loud. I rate my Friedman as the best spend I have made.
@@Triple55555 lol, this Marshall studio on this video is what got me started,
I've put a rotary switch in my SV20 to choose between a couple bright cap values on the fly. It makes a HUGE difference. A 100pF cap gives it all the JTM vibes for example :'D
I'd also say the SV20 comes closer to the original JTM when driven hard because it's honkier / smoother in the power amp distortion and has less clear bass on tap than the ST20.
hum there so darn close boys, great vid.
The tone king is amazing with every set you did. I love the studio is great detail and sound with the stratocaster. I own a Dirty Shirley, Sheriff 44, SLO-30 and Carr Super Bee. All cool and special in different ways. I would love to have the Studio!
This was a great video. A lot to digest here. Bottom line is they all are phenomenal. If you only heard one, you’d be more than happy. I think in a studio setting, that’s where one would be most concerned. Obviously price is a major concern for the average Joe. But it’s still a great comparison. And really interesting how each amp can really hold its own.
They all sound great. I’d like to see a quality demo at this point with so many expert opinions that are available. Let’s talk about the brand that are mounting tubes to circuit boards vs brands that know better.
All sounded great. Looks wise Marshall's does it for me..
What's up with the panel on the JTM45 ? It looks like it has condensation behind it !
As someone who doesn't care about clean tones, the studio is the clear winner for me. Bang for the buck. You get the nice dirties and you don't have to finance your car for it
This was great, all sound really good in their own way, would have been sick, if the Mezzabarba Z35 was included and sold at Andertons... That amp is a Friggin stellar JTM style amp
love the studios look but to my ear the same tone can be had with just a marhall origin and a jhs morning glory right? just my opinion. great job on the deputy as well.
i think the flub and problem in the Marshalls is actually from jumping the channels together, might get better low end by going into only the treble channel and then adjusting the eq. Hendrix never jumped the channels like that and he got some of the most iconic sounds out of those style amps.
Studio sounds incredible, vintage and modern. My pick of the bunch and a deserved amp of the year. The OG JTM45 has that elusive addictive cardboardy thing going on and only the Studio seemed to capture that well.
And I think the Friedman may be the pick for Hendrix tones.
I hardly ever have a "clear winner" on this type of videos since each product will usually do somethings better/worse than others, but this time around the Studio is to me the clear winner. It did everything best to my ears while also being of of the least expensive
That's a sick strat!
Yes! It’s a Hansen, my dream S-Type
All sound cool, I kinda like the flub no lie😂 but that victory does sound awesome! I’d probably would buy that or the Friedman to be honest, just over all.
I’ve got a Marshall 1962 BB combo that is SSSOOOO loud. What are your thoughts on using the Ox Box for live scenarios?
Boss Tube Amp Expander best for the job, live or studio. Also support IRs.
JTM and Tone King sound great. - You guys should get your hands on the updated Suhr Badger models and do a new video on them. The one from a decade ago really didn’t do those amps any justice and they’d fit right in to all these “shootouts”. Rock on.
Over hear in the states it goes from low to high- victory, Friedman, Marshall ST20, Tone king, jtm45 on sweetwater
But where is the combo for the Tone King Royalist MkIII 40-Watt Tube Guitar Amplifier Head?
That ToneKing sounds out of this world at 25:50. Some of the best tone I've ever heard holy smokes
I think you should have Eq'd them to be similar. The big jtm45 sounded too mudcy, which is likely fixed with a bit of twiddling. Nothing wrong with eq matching before a comparison
I’ll take the one with the KT66s and the GZ34 rectifier.
I'd like to hear the Marshall Bluesbreaker also even though it's a combo. The Marshall's sounded the best to me. The other's just sounded trebly like a Plexi. Great video though.
Aah, fun and good-sounding video! But since only the Marshalls is 4-input amps I think you also should've tested them only connected to the brighter input. The bright input on JTM45 is nowhere as bright as on, lets say, the "plexi" 1987x where jumping bright/normal inputs is almost a must.
On top of a Marshall 4x12 cabinet the jtm45 is the best looking 😊
I don't know which one I prefer because Pete makes everything sound amazing😏🤘The takeaway from this video for me is Pete is a very tasty player 👍
Have they ever done a cab shootout?
Toneking seems be very adaptive for pedals. They are all good amps. Can’t really go terribly wrong with either one of them.
JMP 100 and the JMP50 combo are the best Marshall tones.
The ACDC sound is much cleaner then most people realise. Meaning it has more 'hair' due to that violineske sound a slight overdriven sound has. That has way more texture than an allmost white noise sound. (Meaning a fully block sound due to the overdrive where every soundwave has a blockshape on a scope).
Can we just admit that Tone King always has everyone beat except they are expensive and just get everyone to compete with them?
There isnt even a question on this amp shootout for me. The Tone King is miles ahead of the pack and the Victory is dead last imo.
Man I want one of those Victory Deputy, hurry up and get them to Australia!
I build JTM45’s with KT66 tubes and early schematic. Plus bit bigger iron. Normally with GZ34 and lower plate dissipation it’s around 35 Watt power. But those are very loud 35 Watts. Tubes can handle even 60 Watts and some models with solid state rectifier you have had 50 Watts power. Later models used EL34 tubes. Sound different, especially driven hard. Middle range is more pronounced.
Comparing with anything with EL84 and 18 to 20 Watt power, even that 35 Watt is way more powerful and has way more headroom.
Here I can hear lot of difference but for the price they are all great amplifiers.
Clean most attractive on this recording are Victory and the Tone King. Victory possibly due to a good quality and a bit generous bright cap. Tone King possibly due to a good build. Tone King wins for me. Friedman is cool and studio is great for the price but has less headroom and details are not there. Re-issue is bit darker but sweat amp. Good reference here.
Driven Victory gets a bit harsh and I suspect that bright cap comes back to bite it in the ass. Tone King changes sound character a lot and sounds more lake later models of JTM45. More like Black flag and JTM45 50. I guess no hiding for those EL34 tubes. Classic Marshall sounds. Can’t beat them in that. Maybe less JTM45 sound but more SuperLead thing. Awesome but different than early models. Possibly less scooped tone stack as well.
Friedman gets more fizzy as well and starts sounding like Victory.
Imagine most expensive sounds best for me.
But tone corrected re-issue sounds most like early JTM45 at clean especially. Guess no hiding that 5881 is of that 6L6 family.
Marshall JTM 45... the BEST! 🔥☄️🎸
JTM Studio and Friedman for me.
There's something wrong with me... because I'm growing to love that JTM studio, it just has tons of character. The original is nice, but the rest can stay in the shops.
0:47 “we should do something as well, maybe jump out of an airplane…” YES!!! ..playing your fave Tele through a Marshall that’s thrown out the back of the plane with its own parachute
toss an amp out with a parachute, but stay on the plane and use a wireless signal. see if you can get a signal all the way to the ground.
@@notarealperson87 yes, brilliant but I still need see Pete jump out the back of that plane trying to play a Tele 😂
@@planzed.2 youre right! Pete jumps out, leave the amp on the plane. then when Pete lands, toss the amp without a parachute.
Victory sounds killer. I've been waiting since September for my JTM 20 Head to show up. Sorry lads. I ordered it from a Canadian distributor where I live.
Tone King for the win
