Great video as usual, I have often made apple crumble but I uses sweetened cookers not eating apples ..will have to try the recipe out.. and my mom use to put a teaspoonful of salt into a bowl of cold water and drop her chopped apples into that to stop them from discolouring if she didnt always have a lemon..Thanks for taking time to share the video John ..much appreciated

This is very similar to how I make my apple crisp, but I’ve never tried using lemon juice/zest, and have never pre-cooked the apples in sugar before baking the crisp. I’ll have to give these small additions a try! Thanks. :)

Growing up apple crumble and custard was one of my favourite puddings. This recipe looks a lot more "sophisticated" than the one Mum used to make (she would just use stewed apples with a topping of sugar, flour and butter ...) Thanks for sharing and I will definitely try it.

I've just made this and it's amazing! Unfortunately the granny smith apples I used didn't hold their shape and kind of turned to mush :( but I think I overcooked them a bit when they were in the pan. That hasn't stopped me from going back for a second serving though!! 10/10 flavour it's delicious!

I love this recipe, the one I use is pretty similar but adds 1 tbs milk to the apples in the dish to stop them drying out. I'm going to try yours John for a friend, my daughter likes a chewy topping, but my friend wants a crunchy topping is yours crunchy? ❤
Hi John! Thanks for posting this video, I tried your recipe and it turned out even more delicious than expected! We did run into a little hitch in the process and I'm trying to work out what went wrong. When we added the apples to the hot sugar, the sugar seemed to immediately solidify in some areas. We were wondering if this was due to the apples cooling the sugar too rapidly, or maybe we let the sugar get too hot. Can you shed any light? It didn't spoil the crumble in the end, luckily! Thanks again!

I got in a right whip.... first time, I maybe waited too long and it was all hard before I got the apples to the pan. I managed to salvage the apples...next go I prob went too early lol, there must be a fine line. 🤭 I won't be put off though, tis apple season and will try again next week ;-)

Growing up apple crumble and custard was one of my favourite puddings.
This recipe looks a lot more "sophisticated" than the one Mum used to make (she would just use stewed apples with a topping of sugar, flour and butter ...)

I've just made this and it's amazing! Unfortunately the granny smith apples I used didn't hold their shape and kind of turned to mush :( but I think I overcooked them a bit when they were in the pan. That hasn't stopped me from going back for a second serving though!! 10/10 flavour it's delicious!

I love this recipe, the one I use is pretty similar but adds 1 tbs milk to the apples in the dish to stop them drying out.

Hi John! Thanks for posting this video, I tried your recipe and it turned out even more delicious than expected!
We did run into a little hitch in the process and I'm trying to work out what went wrong. When we added the apples to the hot sugar, the sugar seemed to immediately solidify in some areas. We were wondering if this was due to the apples cooling the sugar too rapidly, or maybe we let the sugar get too hot. Can you shed any light? It didn't spoil the crumble in the end, luckily!

It's just the sudden drop in temperature when adding the cold apples, nothing to worry about, keep cooking until the lumps of toffee melt again.

John, thank you for this recipe, I did well until it came to the sugar dissolving.... I got in a right whip.... first time, I maybe waited too long and it was all hard before I got the apples to the pan. I managed to salvage the apples...next go I prob went too early lol, there must be a fine line. 🤭 I won't be put off though, tis apple season and will try again next week ;-)
