Mr. Toad's Wild Ride | Mountain Biking Saxon Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe

- This is one of those "bucket list" California rides that has a bit of everything. Technical climbing, amazing alpine scenery, treacherous chunk, big rocks and tons of smooth flow. I rode Mr. Toad's years ago with my brother and didn't really understand how anyone would enjoy it. Now I love this crazy stuff!

Just imagine...
All the shredders in the '80s, sending that trail on fully ridged frames with: long stems, narrow bars, rim brakes, high seats, and hard tires :o
PS.
Great vid,
Good to see you guys riding together!
badass!
"Panic is not a good mountain bike skill" hahaha! I love it Brian, couldn't have said it better myself!
Haha, a little self coaching!
Haha, loved that one too! No emergency breaking half way through the descent.
Did this ride in '94? Something like that, it was pretty epic but no shuttles, no full suspension. One of my favorites. Great video, thanks for posting.
That trail looks like so much fun. I LOVE those trails like that where you're constantly having to pick lines, and balance on your bike. I'm convinced that if you ride terrain like that all the time, your skills improve incrementally, simply because it trains you to move around on your bike and adjust on the fly. Not to mention...they're FUN TO RIDE!
Great video as always...and Paul's panic sounds add to the adventure level. BTW....those granola bars have been around at least since the late 70's, because I used to eat them as an after school snack!!
I always take a nature valley bar when I ride. They are messy, but so good!
Haha so true
The glitter of the snack world, keeps coming back like herpes
They have been around since 1975. When were you born Brian???
Damn, Brian, you weren't kidding when you told me this monstrosity has chunk and evolves to flow. Heck of a ride, looks like.
Paul for best living SFX archive!
Just did my first “ out of the country “ ride this week in Mexico. New found respect for what you do and are all about. My hero.
After riding Toads for the first time it really showed me what my bike is capable of and took my skill level higher. Love that trail!
I like the style of this video, in the way that you spend time analyzing each section and going back sometimes to do it again. I appreciate the attention to the technical side this time!
Paul's commentary is the best! Great sound effects on features and bumpy trail.
He's so damn funny
That looked like such an awesome trail! I think you've labeled it quite well as a Bucket List ride.
Keep up the great work, Brian, and thanks for getting us out of the office for a few minutes :D
I hope you make it there some day Renzo!
Of course riding with both of you is on my bucket list. The more I watch of Paul's videos, the more I realize we sound the same while riding (just with different accents)!
Hahaha hell yes man! Don't stop hitting me up, with the cooler weather November might be possible!
we just hit that trail twice in the 3 days we were there. So fun! Can't wait to go back when the berms are packed after the snow melt or rain
Orale Brian! Good to see you and Paul enjoying a great trail. Paul's yells are out of this world.
For whatever reason I haven't watched BKXC in like 2 months. Now realizing how much I missed it. Stoke levels go way up every time I watch your vids, man. Thank god I'll be on my bike in like 2 hours.
Welcome back, man! I'll always be here for ya.
I'm glad you had some difficulties on the Top half of Toads. When I rode it, some of it felt impossible without crashing. When we did it, there was a young talented forestry worker who was clearing the trails with a huge chainsaw. He passed us going down Toads with this large chainsaw sticking out of his backpack, the bar pointing above his head by about a foot. I wish I got a picture of it!
Haha that's crazy! I felt the same way years ago when I first road Toad's with my brother "How do people even find this fun?"
Awesome Snuggie Brian! 0:20 I need one of those. :)
Immediately adding this ride to my bucket list. Thanks for posting!
Fantastic!
OTE is awesome. My favorite place to catch a shuttle in South Lake.
Such an awesome shop!
Another great video gets me pumped up to go ride with my son and his high school MTB team tonight!
Love hearing that!!
Maybe you can have your shop adjust that banjo fitting on your caliper so it points up some more. Add some thick clear frame decal where it's touching the frame too.
Not a bad idea!
Came to say this. You could loosen the banjo slightly and rotate yourself, but be sure to check the brake for feel as you might need to bleed it after.
Same here. If you crack it just enough to bump it out to angle away from the chainstay you might not even get any air in the system. That banjo bolt was installed a bit too close to the chainstay to allow for suspension travel tightening the brake line.
2 zip ties - one around seat stay and cable and a second one in between cable and seat stay, around the two pieces of the first zip tie to act as a spacer - pull'em tight, done.
Great video Brian👍I look forward to the next video 👍👍
Thanks so much Bradley
Thanks Brian. Another great video and trail to add to the bucket list. You are sooo working it. 🙏🏼
Thanks Scott, feeling strong!!
Beauty. If I can ever make it down there, I'm adding that trail to the list!
Hooked up with Over the Edge yesterday and rode this for the first time. What a blast! A little bit of everything on this trail.
Yeah buddy! I gotta hear about this.
I love this video. I was feeling it from start to finish. Great riding and attitude Brian!
Thanks so much Dave!
I like Paul's unit of measurement, "half a cliff bar!"
You know what else is possible, OTB! That’s moonscape!
Hahaha yep
Since that trail was established in 1982 so 36 year of erosion it should be called Mr. Toads Wild Wild Ride. Good job on the technical climbing it much harder than most people think.
Rented an Evil FMB from Over The Edge. Good shop, good service. I wish more places had those nifty Manky Maps. I can't wait to go back to Tahoe.
Brian, maybe you didn't have those bars when you were a kid, but they've been around since '75.
Glad to hear you hit up OTE! Wow, I don't think we noticed them until the early 2000's!
'This is like half a clif bar you're burning up right there' Love that! hahaha. Good riding again!
Hahaha thanks!
Fantastic Trail Brian insane rock Gardens in florest very Crazy Mam, show thanks my friend BKXC 🇧🇷😎
Thank YOU dude!
I’m inspired to make a video on Toads now 😂
Alex Chamberlin please do
Everybody's doing it!
Good stuff keep it coming great video
That's some beautiful forest on that mountain.
So damn good
Great video like always
Dang! Those rocks look gnarleyyyyy! I want!
Right on BK. I was just there last week, did the big loop from Armstrong. My 6" Enduro took a crap, so I bombed it on my 4" XC bike. Cleared it all (no daubs) except the the boulders at 5:15. So much fun
NICE dude!!
So I was totally going to do this same ride back in May based on videos I have seen. I went to Over the Top and everything based on your suggestion. The problem was, back in May, Mr Toads was still buried in snow. They ended up taking me up to Kingsbury and I did Tahoe Rim to Van Sickle instead. I remember seeing your video for that too. It was a lot of pain with a lot of pleasure. So much technical climbing but the downhill payoff was sweet. I had to laugh a little when I saw you pull that granola bar out too. Cheap and yet satisfying. I get those same ones every now and then for my trips.
Hell yeah, so glad you got to do that other ride, though. I dig Van Sickle!
Awesome video as always. Love Paul’s sound affects. Just finished van sickle Star lake ride. Between B1KER and you making this trail awesome I might have to make toads my next adventure.
Nice, that's a great ride too! Hope you make it there, it's a good one.
Yes mate!
😁👍
I need to give that trail a go. I live 1.5 hours away and always hit corral when im in that area.. I was up there today actually.
.......love the hoodie Brian !!!!!!
Haha thanks
this was sick!!!! great video as always man
Another amazing vid !
Thanks dude!
That place really looks fun!!
Too much fun!
Haha... can it be to fun... NOOOO!!!
Great rocky ride man !
Thanks dude, I loved it!
Looks like the mountain bike version of rock crawling. Cool trail.
Definitely!
Those nature valley bars have been around since before you were born!
Awesome Trail bud!!!
Can't believe i still haven't ridden this
Lol good video bro thanks for sharing
That looks like an awesome trail! Lots of stuff near CO Springs that's pretty similar. Really enjoyed that one.
Ive always heard about this trail but I cant say it looks fun
I love the TV-14 graphic. I’m waiting for the rated R version 😂
Btw. How tall, and how big of a dropper do you run? Thanks
They started making Nature Valley bars in 1975! I was in 10th grade lol! 43 years ago!
Great now I've got the AMERICA FK YEAH song in my head. Epic trail..... woop
I rode this like two years ago and there was still sooo much snow. Literally 200 yard snow patches. I hit patch of snow and my bike got totally stuck and sent me rolling down the trail. Gotta come check it out in better conditions.
Awesome TRAIL
Thanks!!
Hard to believe I use to ride that thing on a 26” hardtail with 3” of suspension. Would love to get back up there.
Haha so true!!
I think your rear brake cable can be tie wrapped to the black grommet in front. There should be a small gap at the bottom for the zip tie.
You can wrap a piece of an old inner tube around the frame under the brake line, works much better than any tape you can buy. If you want it to look better, chop 2 inches off a thick velcro chainstay protector to put under there. I'd also turn the fitting about 45 degrees clockwise, there might be less rubbing overall if there's no contact when the shock is fully extended.
I ended up doing some velcro!
Great video.over the moon with the quality of the tshirt 💪🤙
Thanks dude!! Glad to hear that
Haha, I had exactly the same reaction going over the stairs :-)
Hahaha that part was so silly
Awesome video you guys!
I wanna ride there! Too hot down here in our area!
I love Over The Edge! Rented a Trek Remedy 8 there when I went in April
Nice!! It's a great spot
Those little breaks to catch your breath and nosh? My dad always called those "nature talks" 😁
Hahaha I dig it
Awesome video. Your brake hose needs moving up slightly from the calliper. That will give you the clearance you need to stop the hose rubbing the frame. The quick way is to gently undo the brake hose and gently with the other hand guide the brake hose Ferrell up as you do the Allen bolt back up. Make sure as you tighten it up keep you hand on the brake Ferrell, so not to allow it to move up to high. Just a tip, if it makes sense. Keep rocking BKXC
Yes, I'm a little afraid to move it up! Gotta get the shop to help me
BKXC totally understandable. It’s easy for me to say what I would do as I have been a car technician for over 25 years. 👊. Easy to mess that job up and end up with brake fluid coming out. 🙈
for where it is rubbing tape with felt or some slick surface on top works well for me
I added some velcro!
You can losen the brake hose bolt that connects to the caliper and tilt the hose upward away from the frame and tighten the bolt down.
Vansicle is a good trail that you can use the public transit bus to shuttle!!!
Nice riding!
Thanks Andrew!
BKXC that trail would be an absolute ball buster on a hardtail!
Way to print the punter around for a bit in some fantastic trails nuggets.
Love reading all your comments as you catch up!
Great job Brian.
Thanks Mark!
You gonna come up for the Rose to Toads ride? Great ride, 60+ miles with around 8k feet of climbing. Fun ride, and a bunch of different trails in one ride.
It's always on my calendar and the timing hasn't worked yet!
About the brake cable rubbing. I had the same issue on my bike but solved it with 3M adventure guard it has been a full year and the 3M stuff is flawless. I actually use it on tons of places now. It is rated to guard windshield of offroad adventure SUVs and their headlamps so top notch stuff.
I just searched for "3m Adventure guard" and I'm not getting any results, is there a better term? Really interested in using it.

My bad, I bought it a while ago and remembered the name wrong, I have a 1 meter roll at home and already put it on the downtube, top tube, everywhere where cables might rub. The install is extremely easy but cutting it is a PAIN, I got easy access to a printers cutter and did it there after I wrecked some of it.
p.s. I will send you a photo of the installation tomorrow morning through your contact form
Just got my "Good time & bad lines" Tee! :)
Hell yes!!
Welcome to my home brotha ;) (on film)
For sure address the cable rub problem there, I wore completely through my aluminum chainstay in a matter of months!
I just leave the cable enough slack so that it jsut kind fo floats a mew mm from the chainstay
Good call!
damn dude i liked your effort on the up climbing part of tahoe rim, but i know if you had probs on that techy part of saxon i know i will have my hands full. Great riding though. Skills pay the bills bro! respect.
Thanks man!
Hi Brian, Nice video of a great trail. I think most people ride it as a loop going up Armstrong Pass to TRT.
Just signed up for Patreon ($3) and watched the early cut. Awesome! Should have signed up months ago.
Welcome aboard Jack!! Lots of good stuff there for ya.
If you angled the banjo bolt further up on the rear brake caliper would that fix the problem?
I think it would, but I'm afraid of leakage and no bleed kit yet.
Take it to a bike shop and they'll do it for you, easy peasy :)
you can screw the cable of your rear break so tha it points in a way that doesnt mess with your frame that much
Wrap the brake line in selfstick velcro (the soft side) and then super glue it to make sure!
Oh nice!
Love it
Thanks!!
6:43, I went OTB trying to boost off that rock last year doing Rose to Toads. Note to self, don't get aggressive 11 hours into a ride!
Loved that trail since the 90's though, tech at the top, flow at the bottom!
Hahaha, definitely 'ill advised'. That spot got me hung up both times!
I am about to get my first full suspension with 180 mm on the forks. I dont need that much travel but its cool
I had the same issue with the 661 D3O knee pads dude - first few rides were horrendously sweaty/slippy, now they're the most comfortable pads I've ever used an stay right where you put them - so either we broke them in, or we've just toned our quads enough that they stick in place! :D
Hahaha, definitely the muscles!
You just needed a boostmaster sound effect on the ass smack. 🔥
The 2 orange bikes you showed at 0:51 second mark is the one I have.
Nice!
Aggressor on rear, dhf for the front, u will love em
Nice!
Frame Scratch & Rub: Have you looked into "Helicopter Tape?" Amazon sells 3M's version in 6" sheets. I LOVE IT. Been using it for years on all my bikes, especially my MTB. Cable rub is hell.
I have! I need to keep looking.
Brian, whenever I watch your videos, I'm amazed that when you stall on the climbs you can unclip so quickly. I know the pedals are adjustable, but still... Epic mountain goat climbing by the way. Enjoying the vids with PtP :) Also at 4:12 the "singing while riding" Bobo style riding really seems to catching on :) Best speak to Orbea about that brake line rubbing?
I've had a TON of practice, so it really comes naturally now! Haha, I think we are both that way, I'm always singing but I cut it out because it's mostly shitty.
Awesome ride Brian I love the climb techy section and clearing some of it. This is all "Brian's Line" from start to finish. Oh I have the same issue with that cable rubbing to the frame its annoying I have fixed it with a Velcro Loop and just taped it with some electric tape and the rubbing is solve no more issue because if it rub to the loop it just glide. My 2 cents. Like and Shared as always.
Same set of tires on my bike. I like the DHF on the front but not the DHR on the rear. Seems unpredictable at least in my Midwest terrain. Like to hear what you think of it. Was thinking of trying the aggressor as my next rear tire.
I heard you talking tires early in vid. When you go through those, which I will say are awesome, check out the Vittoria’s. I ride the Goma in a 2.4 and I can’t believe how they are holding up and the traction is quite good. Great tires👍🏼
Lots of people suggesting the Vitorrias!
Wrap a piece of inner tube to protect your frame from the brake line. Not the cleanest most beautifull way but it works fine and it's very durable.
Nice, I have seen the tube wrap thing working well in the past.
@BKXC use a metal pipe clamp under the brake cable and Trim off the excess, it will stay on, and never wear through and its removable with a screwdriver, place some tape or foam rubber underneath it to prevent damage to your carbon frame. you can even spray paint it before placing it to color match your bike and prevent rust (Rust-O-Leium spray paint) I hope this helps, i use this on my Norco and replace them every spring. Super Cheap, Super Effective!
Oh wow, good thinking!
Vem pra o Brasil correr de bicicleta aqui!
