This is honestly one of the best lessons I've ever come across on coming up with lead lines and actually putting them together in a musical way. I used to do a bit of teaching and I really need to get back to it. I can honestly say that you are an inspiration for it! You have a wonderful approach to conveying ideas.
Thank you, Bud. This is the best message of learning of 70 years old about play The Double. I played the guitar very well. Thank you so much god bless😂
I have played music for 50 some years, I just turned 65 and been thinking I have never tried the dobro, I might not understand that but man you just showed me this is possible, thank you for this video, now I'll get a cheap dobro to learn on if there is such a thing and cause all my friends to say oh crap there he is with that dobro until I learn to play it and I really think I can thanks to the easy and simple way you show,
That hollow wooden sound you hear is me slapping my head . Restarting after a layoff , I had forgotten to use this lick , when I used to use it forewards, backwards , and upside down . Instead I'd been doing modified pentatonics , and over using the Folsom lick . Now when the Sat nite jam restarts after New Years , I'll trot it back out again .
Better late than never they say... Two years after you posted this, I found the very best beginning Dobro lesson on UA-cam. Very much liked and subscribed brother Joe. Thanks so much for giving us beginners so many easy ways to sound good!
This lesson is superb.ivegone from not having a clue what to with my Dobro to having four great licks which I can apply to numerous songs. Thank you man.
This is a great supplement to your "Real World Dobro - YCH" lesson. I get more and more out of your instruction videos with each watch, all while having a blast learning! Many thanks, happy to donate to your site.
This is the best dobro lesson that I have came across, thank you so much. you made it easy and fun and made it so we can just start playing and having fun. keep making these please
Just got a Dunlop Lap Dawg bar. Really nice. Makes H.O.'s and P.O.'s a lot easier. The shape fits my hand better than the bars I have from other makers. Thanks for the tip.
Fantastic lesson. I’ve not touched my Reso in 6 years, as I’ve only been getting pedal steel gigs but I’m coming off gigging to go back to school so im picking the real back up so I can market myself as a true utility player. Always nice to add to the tool box. Thanks brother
Thanks for posting these I just inherited my father's dobro I'm dying to learn how to play it I have to wait till payday to get my bar in some pics thank you for posting these
I've been playing pedal steel for a while, one thing I was always taught and you said it, post a kick forward and backwards. Rotten and lengthen it, make it your own. Good stuff, Joe.
This video is very helpful, I am new to playing Dobro and these simple licks are awesome! Very well explained and demonstrated! Would you mind sharing what tracks you are using to play over and where can I find them? Thanks, man! 😎
Hi Joe, where can i buy backing track's(or as some call them practice track's)? i'm not a Beginner but i need some music track's like one's in your video to use when i'm all alone and NO one is around LOL,BTW some good lick's you are showing ! take care stay safe..
Hi Stan. This play-along track is from the "Real World Dobro" section of my site. dobrojoe.com/RWCheatin.html There are a handful of other tunes in the "Real World Dobro" section you can try too, and I'm going to try to add a few more. I wanted to have some realistic play-along tracks that included the vocal, and Real World Dobro was born. The website operates by donation, so you can head over there and poke around without signing up or anything. Hope that helps! Joe
Can any dobro, even round neck such as EPIPHONE DOBRO HOUND DOG M-14 METAL BODY NICKEL be set up to,play lap steel style, do you need to raise the bridge ?
A square neck instrument is best, but you can put an "extension nut" (about 10 bucks) on a roundneck and play it lap style. The nut slides on over the existing nut, so you don't need to modify the guitar. I would leave the bridge the same. The high tension and high action of the strings puts additional strain on the neck, and could cause warping, so don't do it to a neck you love!
Who's the artist / signer of the two back ground music you are playing too. Would like to find the same songs so i can practice too. Thanks!! Really like your channel !
Hi Jason, these are tracks I created for my "Real World Dobro" section on my website. I wanted play-along tracks with vocals, but space for a dobro to play fills, pads, chops, and a solo somewhere, so I had a couple singers come over and record! "Your Cheating Heart" is sung by Rachael Davis from Nashville. You can play the tracks for free on my site, here's a link for "Your Cheating Heart". dobrojoe.com/RWCheatin.html Here's a link to the main menu, if you scroll down to the "Real World Dobro" section, you'll find other similar tracks. dobrojoe.com/dobro_school.html Thanks for getting in touch! Hi. I love your instructions...Im looking to purchase a good used dobro to begin learning. Been playing basic acoustic guitar for years and I'm a percussionist. I have a local guy selling a Regal dobro. He bought it new years ago. Says there are no markings or numbers on the dobro. He's asking $300. Is this something I should shy away from and look elsewhere ??? Thank you
Well, I started on a Regal, and it worked for me! Make sure it's a square neck, the guy that's selling it might not know the difference. The playability should be fine, and you can upgrade the cone, spider, saddles and nut later if you want to improve the tone. If you want something significantly better, you'll be up around $1,000, so I think the Regal is a fine way to get started. Thanks for getting in touch! Joe
@@dobrojoeschannel7012 Thank you. Yes it's square neck for slide. Not investing big $ in an instrument if I'm not going to stick with it. So it's better to buy low at first is my thinking. Thanks

Great stuff. So is that the standard tuning for Dobro? G tuning?
Yes, GBDGBD is the most common, especially for bluegrass.

That's a pretty instrument!
What name is that resonator?
It's a Scheerhorn, one that Tim Scheerhorn built (not a National).

What’s this tuning called? Is it the most commonly used one for slide?
Yes, it's an open G tuning. GBDGBD
This is open G - GBDGBD, the standard for bluegrass dobro...
