"Teardrops" DOBRO LESSON in G - only 3 chords!

  • This Dobro lesson in G covers a lot with only 3 EASY chords! Abbie Gardner walks you through muted picking and full chords, how to find them, and how to harmonize the vocal on this Claire Lynch song "Once The Teardrops Start to Fall" (recorded on Abbie's CD "Wishes on a Neon Sign"). The chords are fairly simple so beginners can jump right in, but it's the arrangement and rhythm technique that adds some spice for the more intermediate dobro player!
    The Woodshed features free lesson videos from Abbie's backyard in Jersey City, NJ.

      Great video ,as are all your videos,just one piece of constuctive criticism..the level on your mic is too high and when you get into the chorus part where you get into it , it is distorting a little...

Nearly re-recorded the video, but thought it was still useful and didn't want to wait for another warm day before posting another lesson :) Now I know to check the level on my device before recording though. 12:48 - anytime you’re playing and singing the 3rd in the chord, it really rings out. The 3rd is a dominant tone in the major chord and should only occur once. This is why power chords sound so much better than a full chord at times.

    Abbie, I’m 71. I’ve picked and attempted the guitar four times in my life, never succeeded. I did learn to play one of the sons that I wrote. My biggest accomplishment!!! But, age has left my left hand unable to “play” even the basics. The last guitar that I bought a couple years ago was a resonator/dobro type. But the nut isn’t as high. I’ve never “understood” the music concept. But, watching this video, I THINK I’m catching on!! I wonder if dobro tuning is the same as basic guitar? Guess I’ll need to look that up somewhere. I doubt you’ll ever see this, much less be able to answer. I do know I AM going to pickup a slide, and start trying to make music, maybe actually for the first time in my life. I have subscribed to your channel and intend to glean all I can. And your attitude makes you fun to watch as well. THANK YOU for giving me the possibility of some measure of success and pleasure!!

    I just started watching you, and now admire you when you said "It's not a combination of strings like on guitar, uhhh!". Which is why I want to switch from guitar to Dobro. I been playing git for 4 years, and have been the rhythm git player for a lead player. We're no longer together, and as a soloist at a jam tonight, I came to the realization that I really don't know how to play! Everyone else knows some type of lead. And with my super tiny 10-year (adult) hands, I can't reach many chords. So... I think this is what I really need! Question:. I'm right handed, and it seems as though it would be easier to have the slide in the right hand. And on a git, we play notes/chords with left, so picking notes/chords on the Dobro with left hand might be easier. Do you know of any right handed git players who now play left handed Dobro?

    • @AbbieGardnerdobrosinger
      @AbbieGardnerdobrosinger  2 роки тому

      Hey Donna, I'm right handed too. It's definitely better to pick the strings with your dominant hand and use the bar with your left hand. It takes some time to get the technique right, but you're gonna want your right hand to have that accuracy in plucking the strings independently when you want to.

      @@christophermckinnon4920 I know it's crazy right? Near the tailpiece are little microtuners for each string. They increase the string tension enough to make the note a higher pitch. Since they're separate for each string, it's not like slapping on a capo that changes all strings at once. When the lever is open it's the tuning with lower pitches, so when it's closed the microtuners do their job to raise the pitches. Once you set it, it stays pretty well in tune. Make sense? I should make a video of it haha

    I prefer you start out playing the song first before breaking it down.

      @@AbbieGardnerdobrosinger You know, it's as if you are watching me as I just now unpacked my first Dobro. Man do I have a lot of questions already. So let's start simple. I play fingerstyle already on regular guitar. But I don't seem to see Dobro-ists with picks on all but their pinky finger like I do in other fingerstyle. Just thumb index and middle. Is that related to doing banjo type rolls...(which I know nothing about either...haha)? It's sure going to take a while to get down all that muting. I am making noises all over the place...lol! Glad to have found your pages!!

      Yeah, you have the song in your head then, and it helps learn it quicker, a lot of teachers on you tube break a song down, with iut playing it first,
