  • Jerry Douglas gives an in-depth tour of some of his favorite guitars, where they came from, and a bit of Dobro history.
This video is from Jerry's on-line streaming instructional course, "The Resophonic Guitar with Jerry Douglas." This video is a part of that course where Jerry shows you how to move from chord to chord. In the course itself, Jerry covers the fundamentals of learning to play: Left Hand, Right Hand, Picking, Blocking as well as performance tips, gear preferences, and a tour of the mechanics of the resonator guitar with luthier Paul Beard. For more advanced players, Jerry also explores the nuances like the role of the Dobro in bands, classic Dobro licks you must know, jamming the Blues, backing a singer or soloist, and a performance/analysis section on how to play songs such as "The Cincinnati Rag" and "Fireball Mail". I own and love the Earls cd s. You have a great voice/phrasing for classic FlattnScruggs music. I grew up listening to them on WTIK Durham. ✅👍🙏

Thank you very much for this, it was very interesting for me to learn more about the history of this instrument. I am not a player but I sure am an avid consumer of your wonderful music. I very much enjoy your work with AKUS and the Transatlantic Sessions as well as Earls of Leicester. One of my favorite UA-cam videos is you with Alison performing Graceland. I have watched that countless times. The look of accomplishment on your face is priceless...and well deserved. Thank you for all the years of joy you have brought me through your music.

I was seduced by the sound of the resonator guitar a dozen years ago. Being a fretted guitar player (standard tuning), I glommed onto an el cheapo round neck resonator with great sound and horrible intonation. Drove me nuts. So, I ground the bridge pedestal off it and built my own tunable bridge from old Fender Tele parts. Then I bought a Paul Beard Gold Tone roundneck cutaway, which is scary powerful. But now I'm getting the burn to go squareneck. Thanks for sharing this great info, Jerry! 😎

Nice info. I would add that I heard that Bashful Brother Oswald played round neck dobros, rather than the square neck.

Hey Jerry, Have you had a chance to play a Clinesmith resonator guitar yet? Todd Clinesmith is a really fine builder up on Oregon and quite a musician to boot.

is there a company that builds a resonator with the sound of the 27 dobro you played on here , most of the ones i've looked at sound like an amplified guitar , instead of that old lap steele sound , thanks

While Respect and Honor will always be due to the Pioneers before us . And Not because this is on your You Tube Channel , but as of right now , There is no better Dobro picker than Jerry Douglas ,,, Period ! And Again there's a lot of Pickers that have come before ,,, But none including Josh Graves can walk the dog on a Dobro like you !
