I love this saying that I heard years ago: "Smart women chose men that make their lives easier!" Why be involved with someone who makes you feel like you are constantly swimming upstream? It's draining😤😕😒as hell... Life is tough enough without that...A friend of mine mentioned the other day that toxic relationships can be just as comfortable for some people as good ones. Don't get complacent! Wake up!!!

So true, they say that "opposites attract", but if your opposite qualities don't compliment each other, it can turn a relationship toxic. My ex was a deceitful person, and I am honest. I chose constantly to think the best, to believe the explanations, to blame myself for "misunderstanding" when the reality was he changed the goal posts to suit himself at every possible chance and blame me for trying to make him accountable. Toxic and not compatible. Some qualities need their opposites, others don't. I really like this idea of "disposition". Complimentary dispositions is definitely what I'm seeking, and you've given me a name for the idea I had in my head about what I wanted but couldn't quite articulate. Thank you!

Susan, I love your videos, I watch them every day. I just sent this one to my girl who broke up with me tonight. It was so spot on accurate I just had to send it to her. She talks about how important communication is in our relationship, but then she flat out refuses to engage in it. Ive never been more confused in my life. Thank you for what you do, you are awesome.

I have an interesting anecdote to add to that. My ex brought out the absolute best of me, I was flying. She saw the best I could be. Then one day at the peak of this, she suddenly became indifferent and well, that was the end of that. Oh yes, I asked what had happened but she couldn't offer even one word, so I fired her on the spot. I mean, that was all I could be and it wasn't enough for her? I realised that I had always been the sunshine in that relationship. What she lacked, and it was alot, I more than made up for. In essence, I believed in myself and she was the fake catalyst. Yes, it was an illusion I had created for myself. I did the inner work and found during that time I lacked 'self', thats why I attracted her, and thats why all the above happened. I'm in a much better place now and the new girl is a full cup. I don't recognise the old me, he is gone, forever. God bless.

I like that you say you give ample information and communicate. That's where I come from and stressing communication and needs in a relationship. This one that's just blown up on me, my ex said she shouldn't have to tell me what she wants and needs and I should just know and would get hysterical about it when I said let's talk and learn each other through communicating with time.

There's that saying "sunny disposition" speaks for itself :) I'd say in general i'm a happy positive person, I have my down days but externally I like to come across as happy and pleasant. My ex husband was a bit of a drama a queen, we'd be stuck in traffic, just regular traffic and his attitude was, we're never going to get out of this, blah blah blah, and I knew in a few minutes we would be out of it..They have to get you and you have to get them...

My ex exactly and I ignored this for years and years and had four kids with him. the young guy im with today just 'gets ' me simple. My oldest daughter who is actually the same age as my parnter is going through the same thing and is so hard to see her suffer as i have for so long. I still say 'sorry' and i need to stop doing this as is a learned habit from many years to keep ex happy. You can only walk on 'eggshells' for so long. I can be who the hell i want for the first time in my entire life. now having similar problems with my only son who live with his dad now full time and brings all his shit to my place. I have shut off weekends with him for now until he realizes what he is doing as is very harmful for my mental well being which has taken a 'beating' over the years and is still recovering. And the poeple who unlike this video are living in DENAIL SIMPLE. why deny your own happiness and feeling secure and loved and cherished and valued and worshipped and treated like a 'goddess' instead of having SHIT dumped on you for so many years cause they aint happy. STUFF THAT. Live your life for you not a person who diminishes who you are but a person who brings out the very best in you not the worst.

Hi Colette, I read your comments after watching this video way back then, and you resonated with me as you do now. Dropping the habit of saying sorry is simply a matter of self talk. I did the same to myself for years by calling myself some dumb name whenever I made a mistake. I finally dropped that bad habit just recently. Took me about six solid months but I did it! Have you given any thought to attending some counseling with your children as a group? That could help you all undue your ex's pain maybe? I hope you are still with that cool you guy. We all deserve to be happy and adored! Im about to unchain myself from my mismatched disposition of a partner here very soon. Your words gave me some strength at 55! Be well , and good luck to you and yours.

@@FIGGY65 tried counselling when first left him, didn't work, prefer to talk to the few I do trust and attend a art class which helps, as have found art is therapy . My son does not stay anymore and have cut contact with three of them and only one i now talk to, who like me avoids her dad like the plague. Good luck to you, your going to need it. Susan. How u r always so spot on. How u got all the answers. Ur videos r so much empowering. It not only soothes the pain of breakup but also stimulates hopes that we can get what we deserve. There's absolutely no need to go back to a toxic, self centered, hot & cold ex.
Can you also do a video on "how to get over the feeling when u r cheated upon" its the most painful form of break up.

Agreed! My best self is joyful and big-spirited and curious. Sounds great, but many people do not have room in their life for someone like me. Unhappy people either feel a) threatened or b) calmed by me, depending on how much they identify with their unhappiness. Either way, I want a partner who is also happy and big-spirited and curious.

Great advice distilled by wisdom and experience. No wonder, Susan, you are such a great relationship guru. Love is two persons in one and not about oneself--reach out to the person you love, give, encourage, cherish, nurture and strengthen each other.
The Chinese character for kindness is 'Ren' is made up of two characters--on the left is the character 'person' (man) and the right two lines =so kindness is about 2 persons.
I am really glad to have known you all this while and wish you greater success. Peter, Melbourne

Thank you Peter for sharing! ~~~ I have never thought of the word 'ren' in such an in-depth manner. It's certainly enlightening and something we should strive to be. Interestingly, the word 'ren', on the right side, the two lines- the bottom line is longer than the top one, supporting it; which makes it interesting and I only thought about it now. Thanks Susan! I was just absorbing the words of the video. I don't have any questions mainly coz I think I just need to jump out of my patterns instead of getting into thinking. ~~^^~~ Xx

I thought it was him but I realize it was me as my disposition really stunk while separated and going into my divorce. My long time friend tried to keep it all cheery but perhaps he felt it was too much although I pulled out of the depression and confusion but by then, he was emotionally spent. He was positive, found solutions, gave me encouragement and constructive feedback. He was a friend. I miss him but we're in very limited contact.

I been stuck in loop over and over again couldn't see a solution with a woman and how do you think I can help me & her change the disposition and saw the value in it. How do you get the point you willing to change and saw an opportunity in value to positive light? Thank you.

Hi Susan you nailed it again. I have had people in my life that did let me be myself and feel at peace and I got along really well. But of course I always got to go for the complicated guy hahaha. Who is Grumpy disgruntled just generally unhappy. This little character start out quite Charming at first however. But you're right it is where you have to be the happy up one while they get to go around being grumpy and mean all they want. It keeps you on eggshells, you don't feel like yourself constantly people-pleasing. This video lets me know that I need to hone down on people that will accept my traits and treat me kindly. I'm tired of those Bad Boys. They may be fun but they'll wear you out trying to keep all the balls juggled in the air

Hello, dear Susan, please give us tips how to always have healthy thoughts like you? It's hard to always be positive and have healthy thoughts like that for me and some people. That's why I always look for inspiration from you. Thank you.

This is one of your best videos! Seeing that this video was made 4 years ago Susan, would you add any other critical elements that are necessary for a successful relationship than disposition??!

Thank you Peter for sharing! ~~~ I have never thought of the word 'ren' in such an in-depth manner. It's certainly enlightening and something we should strive to be. Interestingly, the word 'ren', on the right side, the two lines- the bottom line is longer than the top one, supporting it; which makes it interesting. I only thought about it now. Thanks Susan! I was just absorbing the words of the video. I don't have any questions mainly coz I think I just need to jump out of my patterns instead of getting into thinking. ~~^^~~ Xx

+Kasandra H Thanks, Kasandra---yes, the bottom line is LONGER...I can sense you are an intelligent and perceptive person. I learn a lot from Susan.
We have only one life and owe ourselves the duty to be free and happy. It's an ugly and miserable world--we have to find meaning within ourselves and make the best of our resources. My family and I live in Melbourne. I am mainly a composer and singer.

If disposition is the issue. 15 year marraige. Still both committed. How do we fix it. Need more videos on this please. He's the day dreamer. I'm the black n white realist goal oriented results driven.

100% I feel that Emotional Intelligence is a course that should be taught at high school level, maybe earlier. Goes a long way in being successful with our relations with others.

When you find the ONE with the disposition that matches and you know it and all other conversations are fun, honest, open...you have opened the gates...that said, is there ever a bad time for all of this to happen...if divorced and split from...kids...all of the things that pile up in the previous life...but is still there to deal with. And you find the ONE or re-discover each other...can it work out? Do we get do overs or a chance to make it right?

    • @SusanWinter

Each moment is a do-over. Yes, we do get second chances at love.

We met so long ago in a business relationship and really enjoyed each others company for a few years before each going our own way but we all know when we know...you know? Then almost 30 years later we have started touching base, had lunch a few times and even had a charity golf outing together...Kids come first at this time, for both of us. I need to stay connected for the next chapter and hopefully its a great one! :)

Well, It is actually hard to know what the other persons disposition really is. So often what they display in the beginning is actually the opposite of their true nature. When you’ve invested years in a relationship, only to discover the true character he has been trying so hard to conceal... it is devastating. I find that I now just assume that someone’s initial presentation is the opposite of who they are, and i’m not willing to enter into anything beyond a few dates. I feel very jaded and mistrustful!! Help!
