- Hi everyone, thank you for 30:41 of your time. In this video I restore and upgrade the Alienware M17x R4. This laptop was abandoned last 2 years, I brought it from the first owner, he brought in back in 2013 as brand new. Couple of years later ( late in 2017 ), the laptop was heavy dropped, and after that replaced with other better specs laptop. So this laptop was left slowly to be forgotten trough time. I forgot to monition the case was broken also, around the left speaker, its visible in video. I got this laptop with i7 3840QM, GTX680M 2GB GDDR5, 8GB RAM ( 2 x 4GB ) and 60GB mSATA SSD. Other RAM was previously removed and as well other disks from the bottom.
Upgrades that I make are: 480GB mSATA SSD, 980GB 2.5" SSD and 32GB RAM.
Current Specs: I7 3840QM, GTX680M 2GB GDDR5, 32GB RAM, 480GB mSATA and 960GB 2.5" SSD.
Also I brought this laptop for 200 euros. Upgrades are cost more than the laptop :D
( btw this is going to me my personal Laptop )
To fix some hardware I used drivers from Windows 7 64-bit, Alienware Control Center is for Windows 7, no problems to Windows 10, all is working perfectly fine.
Games tested: Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Assassins Creed Unity, Grand Theft Auto V, Hitman Absolution and Crysis 3.
✔️Disclaimer: I Done this project for personal use only, not for sale or any other distribution now or in the future. Also, personally I do Not sell any components, other hardware or software.

I love how you mod and restore computers, it is completely unique and this computer has some good damn power for video editing and playing triple-a games on a good frame rate !! This is the best restoration I have seen. Thank you Cat and Andrew for such amazing content!!!
this is what happens when you apply love to your electronics
well, i guess applying love requires money.
@@GhosteUA-cam Well, if the repairs are cheaper than buying a new one of the same specs, then it's worth it.
Don't forget the 96% alcohol.
I love all my electronics

Very nice restore! (as I stare at my own M17x R4 with inspiration) I cleaned it up when I got it just over a year ago, but I did not go this in depth with it. I didn't even know about the other card slot next to the touch pad until I watched your video!! These laptops are truly a treasure that I've been very fortunate to enjoy so far.
Thank youu :D btw these laptops can easily beat many new laptops, especially are great because are easy to maintain and repair/change parts, something that I really miss in the newer models
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew They really are easy and so adaptable. I got mine for a steal and I'm never letting it go lol I'm considering a paint job as you did with this one, as my only issue is the finish on it. It attracts everything and is a little difficult to keep clean and not feel sticky afterwards. That's probably it's only downside for me.
@@jessiegutowski316 Actually cleaning to this paint job goes easy using brush, but yes if the paint job isn't done properly, or done less smoother then will be harder to clean especially with some fabric
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew oh, my apologies. I wasn't meaning the paint job you did. That is fantastic. I was talking about the original rubber finish. I'm not sure they thought that through very well when they decided to design it that way. While it looks cool, it's not very easy to maintain and seems to attract everything. I've yet to find something that doesn't prevent it from becoming sticky afterwards. I was thinking of trying to use your method of removing it.
I mean it depends on why you are doing it, there is no way in hell I ever am doing that to my laptop especially because as this guy said, these are very small, very fragile, delicate parts that even one transistor gets chipped off with that paint brush you're fucked. And you're probably not even gonna realize you did it either you're just going to put it back together and suddenly get a bluescreen for no obvious reason. This is why I don't fix what isn't broken in a computer. I mean I'm not gonna see it and the dust does not affect performance or longevity whatsoever in most of those places so it's just gonna slowly fill with dust over the next two years until I open it up and decide to clean it again. This is really more the kind of thing that you do for a client tbh. And if it's for a Client I mean he did a damn good job of it, I'm, it's just....you brushed the CPU pins dude. I have never ever seen anyone do that, and for obvious reason. Clean like you had coffee not crystal meth.
Just love his videos, and so satisfying how he is able to restore the laptop
Andrew really outdid himself with this one! The paint looks awesome and the editing on the showcase part was exceptionally good!
Thank you bro :D
Sir, thank you for this video. I was thinking about restoring this exact laptop and your video popped up on my search feed. Now I know there is hope and not looking spending money on another laptop. You are my hero.

@@markrichardson1657 All americans speak english with accents too.

Outstanding job on this laptop, loved the effect you gave it with that paint job
I have seen many restorations on many things but watching someone restore a laptop is something i've never seen before and to my surprise it was quite amazing.
This truly is a work of art!
Greetings from Brazil!
I love this Alienware because they had really ALL! DVD Burner, SSD, 2 HDD, 4 places for ram... design are cool as well. Such a cool laptop!
This was the great Era when all was to one place and upgradable, today laptops are great but, less quality, not much upgradable and more expensive than before
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew yeah! And the GPU are always soldered on the motherboard, this is not a good thing, i love when all components are upgradable. I think, they solder CPU and GPU for reducing the costs.
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew Dude, we literally have desktop gpu's and cpu's in a laptop. Even budget one's. Laptops today shit on the older one's by a massive mile.
My laptop's own gtx 1050 4gb clocks to 2ghz via tuning. I oc'd its memory to 4333mhz. Straight up got a 8-10fps boost in games. And this is still bottlenecked a bit due to display not being connected to the gpu directly. And the cpu and ram.
My cpu is a i5 7300hq clocked to a 3.1ghz. Using 20w to hit that under 100% load.
Its a legion y520, a laptop with average cooling. And costed $800 outside US. Similar laptop's went for $700ish or even lower. Hell there in black Friday for $800 got you a 3gb 1060 and i5 6300hq. Thats massively powerful. And literally was cheaper than building a desktop with similar horsepower.
And nowadays you can get a cheap ryzen 5 4600h and gtx 1650 gddr6 laptop. That is basically a desktop ryzen 5 3600 + rx570 4gb.
Dude, laptops literally get better gpu's than desktop's sometimes. Like the 4gb 1050, 3gb 1060, 4gb 1650, 1070.
@@syzerix3157 uh no lol. They don't get more powerful GPUs than desktops. You forget about the 80xx series.
@@techbuildspcs Did you read my comment? I said sometimes. And then I gave a few examples.
I love how you clean each and every part. Amazing restoration
Great restoration effort, loved your video! Not a fan of the speaker repair, but that paint job is just superb! Many painted things (that were not painted originally) tend to look badly done, but you made this look pretty awesome!
Very nice restoration Andrew! I think this was my favorite one. I loved the paint job and it goes really nice with this device!

I built my own PC and regardless of my knowledge in computer parts this video hit me hard with confusious disease, you have incredible talent my friend good job!
Beautifully done!! I love that you made an outdated system FULLY usable, and yeah 2gb for an nvideo GPU is sufficient for most games to play beautifully, I just wouldn't set games like GTA V to max graphics. Still respectful specs and I bet it runs smooth as silk!
Thank you :D
@@ComputersAndTechAndAndrew Hey it's upgradagble anyway, you could slap in a faster GPU.

i have that exact laptop. i gave it to my wife when her old one went kapoot because i had my heart set on building another pc. it ran VR when the oculus was selling development kits flawlessly. the amount of inputs it has is crazy. hdmi in and out, 3 headphone jacks, 4 usb slots, sd card reader etc... i originally payed 2500$ for it new so you getting it for 200 euros is a steal. great vid.

never have I ever been to a video this early.
For anybody wondering, "nail polish remover" he mentions @ 13:47 is also known as: acetone. Also the special paint he uses on the case @ 15:00 to give it that texture; I did not hear what he called it, but in the USA this is sometimes called a "crackle" finish; and spray paint to do it is available (I'm pretty sure)
Amazing video! Great work on restoring a nice laptop! I myself like restoring old laptops and electronics as well, bringing them back to life.
