@@mrld3005 Well, I don't think it's exactly the same. PS5's are subsidized to be sold nearly at cost (at launch anyway...). You could easily argue that the drive-less model is actually FURTHER DISCOUNTED rather than the drive model being an 'extra' $100.
Subsidized means the hardware is very cost efficient for the amount of power you get for running games because they are not trying to profit on their console hardware itself, sometimes even selling at a loss. There is a very good reason it makes financial sense for Sony to subsidize their hardware (to build a user base, and profit on the games and other).
The further discounting of the drive-less model makes a lot of strategic sense because now they have a model with a notably ($100) lower price than their "full" model with the drive. The drive-less model forces consumers to buy digital content and games, which are more profitable for Sony and are not re-saleable as used copies. There is no packaging, middle men, and minimal distribution (only server and bandwidth costs, which DEFINITELY are cheaper than the overhead of selling physical copies).
You could compare this to an imaginary scenario where oil companies sold 2 models of cars. One costs less, but uses more gasoline. They can sell the car cheaper and make up the cost with selling them gas.
A console is primarily purchased to play games on, and without a drive, you MUST buy the more profitable digital versions of the game.

I used to work at Apple as a hardware technician and I can't even begin to express how infuriating it was that I always had to use special software developed for internal use ONLY to solve issues like these. All their devices can theoretically be modified and repaired as you would normally expect, but they've made sure to lock everything so you NEED to use their own software and programs to make it work...

Using proprietary software to do maintenance tasks is not the end of the world, the problem is that are not available to general public. This is clearly a violation to the right to repair

@@andrewk8636 it's easy to say "would be cool if you leak it" but the reality is if the source of the leak was identified, the leaker's career would be _fucked._ And you can bet that the leak would be identified because Apple had eyes on every pins of their microchips. yeah it would be cool while it lasted but it was a risk to someone's livelihood, risk that low-level technicians can't often afford.

The Mac Studio was such an opportunity for them to finally become repairable and modular.
They made the devices harder to repair on purpose, they were not constrained by thinness or performance issues. They just wanted the computer to be unrepairable.
Repairable = more money for them cuz you have to buy another one or pay a ridiculous amount of money for a sketchy repair
hold on! what's not repairable, the PSU is modular, and so is the flash storage? You can replace the storage with the same sized component, you just can't upgrade it. The RAM is part of the SOC and can't be made modular, and designing a socket for the SOC doesn't seem worth the expense. Not sure what else you were hoping for. It's plenty repairable.
Don't forget, their product announcement kept pushing how "modular" the Studio is. So not only is the product an antithesis to their previous repairability articles, they're misguiding consumers as well by misusing technical terms. Talk about false advertising, Apple style.

Love how I can easily add several 2 TB SATA SSDs to my 11 year old ASUS 6PTE mobo, but would be stuck with a meager 512 GB with this state of the art compact computer. Absolutely ridiculous.
and the 2tb ssd costs less than the difference in price between the 0.5tb and 1tb mac. And the biggest spit in the face is how those arent even whole different SSDs in there but merely just flash modules soldered to a pcb. The production cost of one of them can not exceed 5 or 10 bucks

chargers, charging cables and batteries have chips in them that prevent you from replacing them with non-Apple ones or prevent you from using 3rd party chargers/cables without some major drawbacks.

The manpower isn't "wasted." Unrepairable Macs sold to naive and ignorant consumers = massive profit. They can use their cheap ass Chinese slave labour to do the Louis Rossman stuff with access to all the original parts they could ever want or need and resell the fixed machines as 'new' OR make the entire process such a hassle that their more wealthy consumer base just says 'fuck it give me another one.' Full price.

FYI… they’re gonna do it even if customers make a stink. As history has proven. I was a Mac Genius for 7 years… you guys are discovering what we in the GR knew about the Fruit Co back in 2006 💚 Pre 2012 was a glorious time for Macs. Expandable RAM & storage, could pull the ODD and add a 2nd SSD… good times. Fast forward 10 years, they’re appliances.
I replaced some flowers that have died in the garden, then the whole house stopped working, the locks, the toilet, the curtains all just froze up. I had to put the dead flowers back in for the house to work again. I now have the option to replace the flowers for $1,000 each by the builders or leave them alone.

The biggest irony is that the number of people they prevent from doing this is so so small that they likely loose money by even spending the time to develop these protections and in place. Not to mention the customers they might have lost by doing so. They are literally costing themselves money by trying to make more money.
Nah, there is a ton of reasons to do this bullshit.
* An actual economic reason: there is a market of buying and ripping devices for parts to sell them to repair shops. Of course it is cheaper, faster and easier than source them from Apple.
* Stolen devices are especially nice to disassemble and sell as parts. It is an actual problem that apple can solve in this horrible way, but sadly don't. Hackers are always one step ahead.
* Secure boot is a thing and it requires a chain of trust, aka locking EVERYTHING down in a most annoying way, so you can't compromise a computer even with physical access. It includes inability to add something new to it without wiping it.
13:35 - In fact, there IS custom logic on the FLASH module.
All these FLASH memory modules are proprietary! Each of them has a proprietary microcontroller that connects it the M-series SOC through a PCIe x1 interface.
Certified tech here: The SSD can be upgraded but the storage controller firmware in the SOC has to be reconfigured, this can only be done by booking a repair in apples systems and then entering a diagnostic mode allowing the mac to connect to Apples servers which will remotely install the configuration. And yes, I agree it's dumb.
Edit: Theoretically they could probably enable people to do this at home since the entire update process is cloud based and only requires the user to enter the serial numbers of the new chips into their system. It works the same way for iphones, and they're going to enable self repair for those. Will they? Probably not.
I'm guessing this is because (due to the controller being in the SOC) the wear-leveling information, etc has to be reset. I wonder if there is some kind of pairing going on as well between SOC and flash.

Amazing, so everything has to be cloud based now, even a firmware restore. For your own safety and security I'm sure, definitely not so that the machine is tied to a UUID tied to you so that everything you do can be tracked and sold by Apple... Same reason they blocked Facebook from tracking you on the iPhone.

I just successfully "swapped" a SSD drive between two Mac studios(4TB vs 8TB). I struggled on the same issue but funny thing it turns out that I just need to change the original disk location and then it works out well(both units restore successfully after the swap). In stead of slot A to A swap, try slot A to Slot B swap.
I really respect Linus for standing for the customer. He stands with Louis efforts with right to repair and recently with the Filmora lifetime upgrades fiasco. Worth letting the ads play completely. 👏
5:20 I thought it was better if the power lines connect before data lines, no? For ESD purposes, data lines are weaker, so I would prefer power lines to connect and discharge ESD before data lines connect. But you may prefer to live more dangerously!

I wonder if, by the time the repairability, upgradability, or serviceability of almost all modern devices is revealed to be zero to a majority of the population, it will be too late to do anything about it.
it already is too late. just dont use macos, build your own systems and slap linux/windows on it.
I mean there are already competitors going out of their way to market for repairability and long term functionality. Fair phone, framework laptop, librem phone, etc. It's just a matter of getting consumers to actually value those features over flagship ones. (and I mean, they are staying in business now, so unless the market that goes out of their way to buy more repairable devices somehow shrinks, they aren't going under)
@@robonator2945 one other problem is that the people who are into repairability are not the norm, so market is limited, and the "raparability" companies will have to do a fine balance between the price of device, the price of parts and the durability of their stuff to not extinct their own market by selling hardware that remove customers from the market instead of locking them in like the others

@@0b4y3mi You're right that it's not the norm, but the fact is I don't see how the current market niche will shrink. Companies like the ones I listed are factually profitable targeting a market niche that is unlikely to shrink, by that measure it's highly unlikely it will ever be "too late". The key is consumer education and EXPANDING the niche that cares about that sort of thing. Even regulation will inevitably just be bypassed through loopholes or whatnot, but if consumers simply don't buy non-repairable or non-consumer friendly products there isn't really a loophole in that so long as at least a few big groups are dedicated to educating consumers.
The recovery environment used to be stored on a partition of the boot drive. If swapping the flash module makes it unreadable it would make sense the recovery os is gone.... but they could drop a usb stick in there with a recovery os at least.

This is why right to repair is a necessary factor to prevent corporates from harassing the consumers. Even Steve Wozniak said that having the ability to repair products is what truly makes sustainability more of a practical approach. We need more consumer protective laws and ensure both the parties concerned come into a conclusion in this matter.

I Have never own a Apple product. I recon I will not own one before I can tinker and upgrade my own property. The computer last longer when I can do that. Same goes for smart phones. I Love Apple for design and apps. But I am locked and have a feeling that I do not own my bought product.
Why do we need laws, though? It's easy to find out how serviceable a product is before buying it. If it's important to consumers, companies will take notice or they will lose to competition that does. If it's not important to consumers, why force it through laws?
This repair stuff is bs, apple products are built with quality, a mac literally lasts forever and if you are that scared of a cube breaking then get apple care cover..., changing the ssd on a mac is dumb, if youre spending 2k on 512gb then im pretty sure these people can afford 2.2-2.6k for 2tb; it's all about choosing the right option not tampering with the internals and inserting lower quality ssds/iems

@@lucasrem did you miss the part of the video where Apple intentionally made their SSDs incompatible with regular NVME drives simply so they could save a few bucks on the controller? Their goal is literally to upsell you on upgrades they went out of their way to modify so that the consumer could perform themselves, despite literally every other competing product allowing the user to upgrade that part themselves.

In the 90's, I manages an academic department at a university what had all its faculty computers and lab computer as various Macintosh models. None were uni-box designs and all had easy to open cases (generally just either snap off with plastic clips, or a removable panel and the motherboard could be slid out to access). Both RAM and hard drives were accessible and each to upgrade, and there were a few third party products to upgrade with PowerPC processor boards in the late-90's... which we did for the faculty systems rather than replacing the systems completely. It was easy and we trained student workers to help do the upgrades. Wish Apple went back to that more consumer-friendly sort of design.
Honestly, when thinking about the environment alone, this kind of anti-consumer practice should actually be *ILLEGAL.*
Repairing and maintaining products is *crucial* to reducing waste and pollution!

Often It’s just a stupid but not inaccurate talking point thrown out by people who do nothing in their own lives to reduce their environmental impact and are just using this to rant against their most hated enemy, Apple. Most viewers on here buy products that are far worse for the environment and use them in ways that have little productive value.

Imagine if a construction company who built apple's building made proprietary outlets, door locks, and light bulbs, etc. Then when ever apple need to plug in something, make keys for doors, or change a light bulb they have to pay the construction company to send in a tech to do those thing for them....because apple logic.

This is pretty close to how the government buys contracts and spare equipment. Outlets aren't proprietary but keys for doors/changing light bulbs requires contracted companies to source them.

The fact that they even sell computers with less than 1tb of storage is hilarious.
What an over simplification this statement is. It's a desktop with multiple Thunderbolt ports so nothing to stop a user adding external drives that will be damn fast. It also has a 10Gb Ethernet port so connect it to a NAS for bulk storage is another possibility. Only and idiot throws out a computer because the HD is full, at worst they sell it.
Your statement is slightly more relevant in relation to RAM though where you don't have an upgrade path but even then, only an idiot would throw it out.

The people that are notorious for prefering ease of use over upgradability and customisation.
Best they'll do is put on some external HDDs/SSDs, but even then the point of this mini pc is to have a small clean pc somewhere nice, not have stuff hooked up to it all the time.
I worked for AppleCare for a while a few years ago and it's like this for everything- not just the hardware but the internal SOP's are designed to screw you at every opportunity. I'll never forget the call I had with a customer who had spent $1500 on a Certified Preowned (from an authorized vendor) 2018 MacBook Pro for school and ran into the butterfly keyboard issue. Fun fact: anything preowned is marked AS IS in big bold letters on our screen as soon as you pull up the serial. What does AS IS mean in Apple? "Not our problem." Even for confirmed, warranty issues. This series of keyboards was confirmed to have an issue and was advertised ON OUR SITE to be covered for repairs on anything to do with it. This chick had bought a CERTIFIED PREOWNED (for nearly the price of a new one mind you) that had APPLE'S STAMP OF APPROVAL ON IT buuuuuttttt because someone had bought it before her, all warranties were bucked. At that moment, I decided I would never buy an Apple product in my life- they don't care as long as they got their money out of you.
Had she only just bought it? That kinda thing is covered by warranty here in the UK. For 12 months, if I recall correctly.
@@kael13 Sale was in the US, and the previous owner of the device had it for two days, the lady I served had it for a few months, but less than half a year. I escalated it as far as I could and everyone had the same response "It's an as is product, so she'll need to pay $800 to have the warranty issue fixed or buy a new one herself."

So Certified Preowned just means it was working when they sold it? Sounds about the same as buying from anybody on the street as long as you see it working before you pay. Apple sucks in so many ways.
This story is common with "open box", "refurb", "as-is", "previously owned" electronics from anywhere these days. Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Newegg, etc. At least for normal consumers, anyhow.
This is why I took your advice in 2021 and bought one of those 14 core i9 processors (they were in China on Ebay) along with a Gigabyte x299-ud4-pro motherboard and turned it into a hackintosh. I'm sure it's not as fast as an M1 (it hits 10k on geekbench) but I put two nvme drives in and just added another 1 tb SSD to it that's attached to the case. I did have some snags though adding the SSD... The nvme drives turn off the 3-4-5-6-7 data connectors so I was forced to plug it into either the one or two data connector. And the little side mounting brackets on the corsair case were a joke so I just stuck the SSD to the side of the case with some sticky tape.

@@dennis4985 I tossed my SE in the trash, that phone......garbage. I'm about to toss my 11 pro in the trash too, I've noticed my financial apps are freezing, and It's driving me crazy. My pixel 4 has a faster shutter speed, the battery lasts longer, it does how ever do this strange thing where the screen will back out to the home screen on its own, on apple music.

Sony and Microsoft also tend to list skus of compatible drives, which usually starts with -- what already exists at the time of sale.
The exception of the PS2 was caused by Western Digital moving their power and IDE slots where no one else was using them... SATA standards fixed that issue, and M.2 is now there where there is the SSD standard and the Peripherals standard (because there are M.2 Wifi and Bluetooth cards).
...and remember that Microsoft is more originally a computer tech company... (also Sony MemStick is um... dead... lesson learned. (a second time -- Betamax))
You can’t at the moment with the series X. There is a third party SSD Converter for series X/S but I haven’t seen a video of one of those working.
Sony's Memory Stick Duo was really only meant for the PSP which was done to a similar way to what Apple is doing with their storage, making customers buy shitty low storage cap Cards for stupid prices, that's way it's dead

Still a 22 year IT professional proud to have never knowingly given Apple a single dollar of my money. I possess two apple devices, one phone (I think it's a iPhone 10, honestly I'm not sure) owned by my employer that they assigned to me and force me to carry every day, the other an older i-pad (also not sure what model) that was also assigned by same employer that was connected to the cellular network as a tool for us to use for a while that when the company decided to cut cellular costs they cut the cell service and told us to keep the ipad as our own. So I guess I OWN one Apple product, an aged IPad that I literally use as a Wifi connected PDF reader in the garage when I need to reference documents\manuals etc while working on hobby projects. Think I have used the IPad 3 times in the past five years hahaha. Anyway, Apple's philosophy toward their "customers" over twenty years is exactly why I don't see myself ever supporting Apple. For them it's ALWAYS a "money grab" and lock-down routine, just not interested. I guess one day if they make something exponentially excessively insanely cool that I just can't live without that *may* change, but until then I have been more than joyed to not give them my money...

Honestly, I am really disappointed with Apples limitations. Adding/replacing storage should be a minimum.
I think every computer should have at least one internal port that can be user populated. And M.2 is a good approach for that. It's not only for storage, there are also wifi or bluetooth modules. Just like the old PCMCIA slots on laptops or ISA/PCI/PCIe in desktops.

It's not a flaw, it's intentional. That's what makes this a big deal, Apple shouldn't get a pass because of their own weaponized incompetence. and enter one of those defenders 😂. Apple has a philosophy. To make great software, you have to make your own hardware. I've always been a PC enthusiast and enjoyed upgrading parts. The problem is that Windows frequently crashed. A lot. Usually driver conflicts from various manufacturers. I now have a Mac Mini M1. Sure I can't rip it open and add a new Wifi card or RAM module...but it's never crashed. Not once in the six months since I've switched. Add that to the fact I really never have to worry about malware or viruses... I'm sold. Maybe it's just something that happens when you get older, but I don't I don't want to rip open computers just to add upgrades that don't work because of driver conflicts anymore. I just want something that works for my needs and so far Mac excells at that. I use to blame Windows, but you can't expect an OS manufacturer to make sure their OS works with every third party peripheral, or expect peripheral manufacturers to ensure their peripherals work with every other peripheral on the market. That's why Apple adopted the philosophy to build their own hardware. Yes, they still use third party suppliers for stuff, but very much under their own quality control. Enjoy your blue screens of death that you get from the freedom to mix and match hardware. The time I save from not dealing with that crap anymore has made my M1 Mac a very worthy investment and I can understand why Mac doesn't want to get the same reputation Windows has by allowing consumers to mix and match hardware willy nilly causing OS crashes.

Once I partitioned a higher capacity drive to work from the original HDD to an SSD (120 GB t0 512 GB SSD) on an Apple and it worked! Perhaps partitioning and installing on that partition original size might work then resize in the OS or keep separated as an additional drive.
Arm is harder to work with, even android devices are, but the tools are everywhere and runs on windows and Linux

I think it’s got to the point that this is now actively hurting their growth. I would recommend this product MORE if it allowed upgradability. This is geared towards professionals that will be editing raw photo and video data. You can fill a TB in just one day of filming now. Especially at 8k. It’s pretty inexcusable that you cannot upgrade it later as your needs grow.

It’s because apple design things with a strong set of user requirements in mind, and unfortunately, repairability is not one of them. If the keyboards are easily swappable it might result in in a bulkier design which is not very appealing.
To be fair, they make up for it with really good service. I rmb swapping batteries for my iPad. Instead of swapping the batteries directly, they replaced the entire iPad. All at the cost of just the battery replacement.
But yeah, I do agree that apple needs to improve repairability. They’re basically creating a repair monopoly.

In the rest of the industry, the idea of repairability has always implicitly included the concept of upgradability. Apple's idea of repairability on the other hand has always meant, "can be repaired... by us... when you give us more money". Also Apple's idea of Pro-consumer is, "Make the consumer more of a consumer... by giving us more of their money."
Not even that when you give them money... Like when LTT broke one of the imacs and they refused to fix it, even when offered money.
What if you also try to tinker with your stuff and break it, and apple just refuses to fix it for you and says to buy a new one? I'd bet that already happened to some people.

This happens all the time, Apple either won’t fix it or they will for almost the exact same price the device cost new. You can see this in action by watching a few of Louis Rossmann’s videos.
Yeah, pretty much. In the PC hardware world that shit wouldn't fly for a goddamn second. Why? Because all of the computer hardware is modular. With the rare exception of suuuuper crappy, cheap, enterprise OEM computers, the hardware is all swappable and drivers are freely available from the manufacturers. Even in the case of that bizarre Dell computer with the wonky motherboard with the weird backend that stuck out of the case, you could still remove all of the components, put them onto another brand of motherboard with the same chipset and it'll work. You have to really dig to find a desktop system that is completely non-modular like this Apple Studio is. Hell, I challenge anyone to find a non-Apple desktop computer that won't allow you to swap out the storage drives at the very least.

I think even Apple authorized, or whatever they called it, won't able to upgrade it either. because if I'm not mistaken the capacity need to be known by the controller, which is not in the modules but in the M1 SOC. that's perhaps they give second slot for, so you can add more capacity if you want, and other reason would be they push you to use Apple iCloud storage

Valve also isn't a publicly traded company, so they aren't legally required to provide maximum shareholder value at all times.
After building my of PC's for many years I got tired of the agony of having to replace the whole shabang anyway after a couple of years why the PCi, Rams, cpus and whatever was stuck on a deadend route and decided I was not going to waste endless hours of UA-cam and manuals to keep my PC running. Another factor was the part that even after investing all I could on fanless components, watercooling and what not I still never got my PC to keep silent. So I went and had a look at a Mac Studio. It did what I wanted it to do and it did it silently. End of intro - I bought it one. The price jumps between versions, ram, and drive options made me go with 32 GB and 512SSD. It still does what I want it to do, but I have added external SSDs to store my work since it is not possible to upgrade the internal drive. It is totally insane. It would have made some sense if they at least offered a service to take units in and offer upgrades as a paid service. Pretty weird also that no environmental organisation have tried to sue them for this.
Not the biggest LTS fan but I realize no matter who you are, I will never tire of people illustrating Apple's failures.

Also, "South Main Auto Repair". Guy owns his own repair shop. General auto repair. But another guy who is a whiz with electronics.
With our firm I have a Macbook pro max and some of the programs don't work or give problems with the M1 chip. The manufacturer of those programs say it is specifically becouse of the different architecture of the chip. The main one I'm talking about is Vectorworks 2022 - they even put out a statement that the update will come soon and that there is positive ''progress'' in the development in the new system. The other big one is twinmotion from epic games and sketchup pro in direct link. You need from apple a code translater program the be able to run it but this does not always work... seems to be very random. Twinmotion als communicated with me that in the near future the update that will come out will fix this issue and that Ray tracing than will be possible but they can't put a date on the release.. also kind of funny my 7 year old 2000euro pc is running the same renders and the same time (maby max 30sec slower) than than a almost 4000 euro laptop. Propably becouse of the architecture of the chip is not properly supporting the programs but needing to translate everything. We call that F*ing lovely. Sad that in architectural schools they almost teach you to only get mac's in Belgium for some unknown pretentious reasons... sorry for the rand and I love your videos. Cheers!
I just bought a 4 Tb (WD Blue) 4 Tb SSD. Yeah, in 2½" bay form, but it was about ¾ of... The other one I bought at the start of the year. Which makes my studio pc from years back 13 Tb of storage. Old hard drive's contents have been copied (I just backup software), I'll put the drive in at daylight tomorrow. The old drive was about 80 % filled, the replacing SSD is about 13 % filled. That's the beauty of updating drives from erm... Ten years ago or so. And much simpler than changing drives in this silly machine, haha.

are these SSDs available in aftermarket ? I had in mind to upgrade a Studio M1 with 512GB and 32GB RAM to 2TB SSD and 64GB RAM. The only way to go to 2TB is use a single strip or, 2 x 1TB strips by removing the current 512GB. The single strip is more advantageous because it would free up the second SSD slot and provide a contiguous 2TB SSD space.
Again I have space but mine is rectangular, each and every room is that way, even the closets. You do get the most space from the smallest perimeter with a square especially when making a house etc. The Italian Block chalet of old two - 3 story with terrace on top. But the house with a dog leg , flag and channel are such great shapes to use for a home. So I have no Square spece.

They made the SoC, the mainboard, firmware, OS, and specced out the specific design for the flash modules and then had someone fabricate the hardware the way they wanted. It’s all intentional, and their system isn’t special. They want the repair money-all of it, and they don’t care about doing what’s best for others.
I hate it when companies don’t listen to their consumers. Apple is just being greedy right now. That’s not right. I really want Apple to listen to the consumers, not just for profit.
@@NotThatEpic7492 Apple will only stop doing this bullshit once there is actual competition. Sadly no SOC could match theirs yet. Some of it is probably due to custom designs that make it incompatible with normal SSDs like the integrated controller because the M1 might not use PCIE(just a guess). But there is no reason for them to not have a few resistors that code how much flash they have (to swap the capacity and brand of RAM you have to move around the resistors) or just make firmware accessible to everyone.

No, they don't want the repair money. Time and time again, they've proven that they want you to buy a new product once your old one fails. If you absolutely want to repair anyhow, it's going to end up costing you almost the same as buying a new product anyhow. A $5 chip broke on the motherboard? Nope, ain't fixing that, you're gonna have to pay $1500 for a new motherboard, or spend $2000 on a new computer. Most people are dumb enough to buy a brand new computer instead. Of course there are repair shops that will fix your motherboard for a lot less, but Apple is doing their best to make sure all important parts are either hardware locked (so you can't swap certain chips from one Iphone to another one for example), or impossible for repair shops to buy, so there'll be no other option than to heavily over-pay for a repair, or buy a new computer/phone/whatever. I don't see how Apple can pretend to care about the enviroment, when they are actively doing everything they can to make sure none of their products are ever repaired, they just have large parts of the product completely replaced, or they just claim it's impossible to fix and even claim that anyone who says that they can do it, are a scam, despite the fact that a lot of the things that are "unrepairable" according to Apple, is still fixable.
Apple are just actively doing their best to increase the amount of e-waste, while proffiting from selling even more products cause people aren't getting them repaired. They're directly profiting from harming the enviroment.

I love Apple and I've been using Mac's since 1984, but you are right. There is no excuse to lock out NVMe SSD upgrades. Especially important in the long run because SSD's are not designed to last forever.

Apple has no backbone. The EU has absolutely no business interfering with an American company's business. If Apple wasn't run by diversity hires, and they had some balls, they'd tell the EU to go effoff. Apple is a bigger corporation than the entirety of most European countries. Apple is trash, but not as trash as the EU.
We know US regulators won't. It's "funny" how we can just assume that the US legislation process is hopelessly corrupt and skewed towards anti-consumerism, and nobody will argue otherwise. Everyone will just instead say, "I hope the EU saves us."
Technically, it's illegal in France already to have stuff like this. But it should be a european law in general as well, I agree.

I went into an Apple store out of pure curiosity having never been in one before. It looked okay at first. Mostly tables of sparsely populated thin & lights, tablets, smartphones. What drew my attention was this model. I got to talking with one of their sales reps who told me there was no way for an owner or an Apple repair tech to open it up after it had been bought. That I had to choose exactly the amount of RAM and storage ahead of time because it is soldered shut after being populated. No way to add upgrades, no way to fix something when it eventually will break, you're stuck with whatever you buy starting at two grand!
He had a hard time telling me that too because he knew it was a total bullshit flawed design. I let him know that on the Windows PC side of things we can buy lower end machines to upgrade over time as we desire. So I looked around the room and instantly saw a new angle from Apple. Selling high cost junk to devotees who will never leave them for better technology. After that I just walked out of the store with no reason to ever investigate Apple PCs again.
Damn. I would've replied, "So the engineers who designed this weren't smart enough to even make it repairable by their own company techs? Even companies who make Windows machines are capable of designing theirs to do that, and for much less. That's sad"
I warn people all the time, Apple products are made for people who have no interest in knowing anything about their product. It is designed to be thrown away. I have personally fixed every problem I had with my PC, from viruses to power supply failure. I will never own an Apple product if I can help it.

That's the problem. Those engineers were easily smart enough to make the stuff they designed repairable - it was decided, however, that they should *_not_* do that.
The designs requested of them however, were carefully built the idea that they *_not_* be repairable.
It was a corporate decision, not engineering failures that made Apple machines the way they are now.
Quite an accurate summary, Apple are scum, I remember you could boot an apple pc off an external drive in the past even if the internal drive failed and thought that's neat , now if the internal drive fails it's a brick they are literally going backwards.
Not anything is upgradable in a windows notebook. Apple probably got the same inspiration and made nothing upgradable.

I wonder if it's for redundancy in case there's a design flaw found later down the road in a particular design it doesn't affect 100% of product. If you do 50% yield with each company and there's a critical flaw that shows up later and it affects 25% of only one of the vendors (an unlikely scenario by most standards) then you've mitigated a potential disaster.

The Studio looked like a great successor to me Trashcan MacPro. They more I look at it, the more I plan to hold onto my Trashcan MacPro.
Usually products are either cheap and disposable, or expensive and repairable. Apple's innovation has been to pioneer the expensive and disposable idea as a good thing.
The fact that people keep buying these products, continues to surprise me.
I would ditch Apple in an instant and start building my own PCs if Windows wasn't still such a mess compared to of Mac OS.

@@iAmTheSquidThing mac os is a mess as well especially now . if you try to use anything that has legacy on mac os you are plagued with issues . windows is the most veristile os you can run legacy software on any pc and it will most likely work you cant do that on mac osx plus windows is usually got browser support for a longer ammount of time

i was literally in 6th or 7th grade and took apart my laptops (HP and Dell) without doing any (significant) damage. most people are capable of repairing their devices if companies don't pull an "Apple" like here.
The problem is that apple continuously pulled an apple and had success and many other devices from other manufacturers became less repairable in the process.
The worst is that they used to be a lot more upgradeable. They used to use standard SATA drives even in laptops!
Can also add that pretty much all Mac computers use their own unique format from hard drives and it's not even the same for all Mac:s. It's actually varies over time.

When Apple first announced Apple Silicon, my first thought was that they were doing it to limit their customers ability to upgrade and repair their own devices (or buy the cheaper model and use after market, aka cheaper parts, to upgrade it as needed.). Much like not offering expandable storage in the iphone. By removing the option to upgrade later, you maintain an illusion of choice, but ultimately push more people to overspend becuase you dont know what you may need later on. I think their ultimate play down the road though is to make Mac OS like IOS and force users to install all programs via the app store. This way they can take their 30% cut on products like Adobe Premiere and AutoCad, as well as all the other software. Oh look, you have to pay 30% extra for Office and Adobe but not our own software. Ultimately, controlling the hardware will allow them to close any loopholes that would allow people to bypass this restriction.
Ya it is totally true. It pushes you to overspend. Because if you need more space later that means another $2k instead of just an additional $100. I really miss having a windows laptop. I bought the baseline M1 Air with 512gb and yes, I am feeling the crunch already and wishing I had bought more. Apple is so freaking evil man.

I am not one for negativity even around corporate products, but geez, I have zero regrets over moving away from Apple. People always said that when I switched to Apple computers I'd never go back to Windows, but here I am! Though actually it was the butterfly keyboards at the time that sealed my decision to buy Acer instead.
I'm not supprised by them doing this, I've always seen them as the king of proprietary hardware and software.
I've never really been a fan of Apple, l still have horrible memories of using their original iMacs from the late 90s, some of the worst computers I've ever used. Both the middle school and high school I went to primarily had macs for computers.
I think it's unreal, that on every Apple product they devert more time and effort to making things unrepariable, unupgradable for everyone, than just making the Product better.

And to think, in 1998, the Apple G3 had a lever to open the side of the computer to access the board, 4 extra slots for extra ram and 2 extra place for drives with a removable front panel so you add disk drives there. I never played in a computer before the G3 and I never really did again. A toddler could upgrade the G3.
I feel the title of this video so much. I loved my mac all in one system as a studio computer when doing digital art in college, i still think about buying a nice mac to use as a studio workstation for art and music, but I hate how consumer unfriendly their products are. I do IT and if I have the knowledge to fix or upgrade something myself, I want to do it MYSELF. Their proprietary products are so impractical and you have to jump through hoops or buy more of their product just to even make the most of it or even in some cases, fix it. And with a lot of their computer products, you cant just upgrade it with a few parts, you have to buy an entire new product that will just be outdated a year or 2 later or sometimes, in a matter of months. I know it's just a another way for them to make money but as big of a company as they are, they don't need to nickel and dime the consumer like that. It is pure greed. They know how to make a good product but choose to limit it because they wanna milk the consumer as much as possible.
That's how they got there in the first place. I don't think complaining now will make them suddenly stop and reflect on their ways...
And that's on capitalism, where money and profit margins are the only things that matter

I agree with you but the feeling of a product being outdated just after a few years is more likely to be something that happens with Intel and Android devices, that refresh their lineups constantly every 6 months/1 year or so

I bought the M2 Ultra with the 8T SSD. So, it is fully-populated. I paid a lot for the large SSD but it does contain the overprovisioning that I am hoping will allow my Studio to last. But, before I bought it, I asked the Genius at my Apple Store if they could replace my SSD. I did not ask if they could upgrade it. They told me that the Stores do stock the NAND cards and are prepared to replace them if they go bad. It was then that I felt okay with ordering mine.
Apple's determination to pull stuff like this is exactly why I don't own Apple anything.
“Can I put an extra SSD in my Mac Studio?”
Apple: “But what about the safety and integrity of your device! We have to do it in house for your security!”
“So will you sell me a proprietary SSD?”
Apple: “…”
Of course they will sell you one! It only comes with a whole Mac Studio attached to it.
