- We love checking out older Alienware items, often they are hidden gems! This Alienware 15 R3 features an Intel i7 and a GTX 1070 and it was $400. Originally this laptop came out in 2017 and was $2,600! With how cheap laptops are getting, is this actually still a good deal or should you avoid these?

ah memories. that was the very first gaming computer i ever owned. I purchased it with my bonus after basic. I used that all through the army, and some college afterwards before i finally built my tower.
mine was the 17 inch version with the full numpad. I noticed in the video they were saying this was 2600. Im not sure about that mine was 1700 when i bought it from best buy in 2017
I had the 970 version with the 4k screen. Only came with 8gb of ddr5 ram and it cost soio damn much.
@@KickMe1177how do you like it? Would it be an upgrade from my Asus ROG Strix G16 with an i9-13980HX + RTX 4070 8GB + 64GB DDR5-4800MHZ RAM + 2TB NVMe SSD storage? Also it has a 1200P 165hz screen, but I am thinking about upgrading to the laptop in this video, what is your thoughts?
@Empylol don't do it haha. What you got already is good.
@@Empylol blud flexing on budget gamers
Still currently rock my 1060 version as my back up pc! Love gaming on it every now and then still! Absolutely love these Alienware videos!
The 1070 is actually a higher cuda core count than the desktop 1070. Power limits are lower than the desktop card mind. I have had one since 2017, the main issue is the cpu is poor for modern use and I have the 7820hq which is overclocked to 4.2ghz it’s Not enough for Morden games IMO. I would not recommend 3rd party batteries as they often have the wrong temp sensor installed which causes the laptop to alarm on boot and refuse to charge the battery as well as reducing power limits so the processor runs at 1.2ghz (it’s better to have a bad original battery than a 3rd party if you plan on being on wall power anyway)
I used to have the same one, 17inch 7820hk 1070 4k gsync, my battery die and i bough one from aliexpress no problems at all it charge normal and it gets around 4 hours of normal use. I sold it to a cousin and still working great.
I have an i7 8700k paired with a GTX 1060 6GB. How does it compare to CPU and GPU in this laptop?
Can’t lie still want one of these
It's so sexy looking, how couldn't you
The temps are so high because, most likely, it still uses the same thermal paste since it came out.
Make a video about re-pasting it and show the difference in before and after cleaning it inside and maybe upgrading the storage.
I hope they see this
Taking apart a Dell laptop can be a serious pain. They really aren't designed to be user servicable.
I repasted and repadded mine (1060) multiple times and it still had terrible thermals, which is sad, as I loved the laptop in all other areas.
@@kr00t0n Then the cooling is not sufficient. Also as I looked at their video, the feet that should give enough elevation are not enough. Also they tested the laptop on that mat and used the laptop keyboard. Pushing it down to help get less airflow.
I have one of these and I can firmly say that the only thing that changed something for me was liquid metal, but the performance they show is about the same as mine, so I don't think 20 degrees of temp difference would have any effect after all...
The docking station port is actually for an eGPU
Toasty Bros: Whoa this 15 R3 is massive and this 240w PSU is HUGE!
**Alienware 18 w/ 330w has entered the chat**
The admin is the two PSUs I lugged around with that desktop laptop thing 330 and 220 watt
Does it have a mux switch? You guys should plug it into a monitor and benchmark it .
Yeah, till where I know it doesn't have a mux switch 👌
I tried to find out when MUX switches were created online but I couldn't find anything. The only thing I found was Asus saying that they first put them in their laptops in 2018, but it could be older than that if other companies were using it. But maybe the MUX switch wasn't common in 2017 or didn't exist ?
Thanks!
Oh the BEZEL...we HAVE evolved indeed.
I love you guys. Always finding ways to make just about anything SUPER interesting!
Sill have this since 2017, havent re installed windows ever, max speed out at the time for 2600, still running, only thing was to change the paste for the procesor/gpu but it still very relevant for gaming and video editing, totally worth it
Bought one for 300$, no problem with battery.. it still play a tons of games lol its crazy how cheap it was !!
picking one up for 200 tmw
Love yalls videos inspired me to build my first pc ever im 38 and ready to join the master race
Been using the MSI GS65 Thin
- i7 8750h
- GTX 1070 mq
- 32 GB RAM
- 4 TB SSD
although it has a lower wattage on the GPU, it still runs quite well.
I still have a 2015 Alienware laptop and it is still usable (though batt is toast). On the hood I set the light color to green, then put a Yoda sticker on it so it looks like lasers are coming out of his eyes
Surprised to hear the negative feedback about this one. I have a 17" model with same i7-7700HQ & GTX 1070 8GB, 16GB 24MHz RAM, using an NVMe SSD and I've been very happy with it the whole time I've had it, after owning and liking previous alienware model laptops and a couple of other brand gaming laptops. The speakers in my 17" sound quite good, the laptop mostly stays completely silent during regular use and during heavy use the fans aren't as loud as you'd expect, and the temperatures are pretty good. Maybe that 15" needed fresh thermal paste and some dust cleaning on the inside. Side note, the GTX 1070 Mobile is only about 10% less powerful than the desktop model, which is pretty impressive and much better than previously the M variants used to be about 30% less powerful.
I have the same version but with a 1060 and have the same issues. Battery is nuked and the display has so much screen tear and ghosting it is unusable. I don’t use it for gaming anymore and really only use it plugged into my TV to stream videos and sports
Really? Im thinking to buy alienware r3 gtx1060 from second hand market
What program do they use for the monitoring temps and usage in game? I may have overlooked it in the video info but very curious as it gives good info and does t appear to be too intrusive on the screen.
MSI Afterburner
msi after burner
I used to carry one of those when I traveled all the time for work. I played a lot of Fortnite: Save the World on it. Still have it here in my office. Was great.
What would a non Alienware with the same specs cost. Would it be less and if so how much less?
I had the 17R4 and R5 version of that laptop. YOu just need a battery and to repaste the CPU and GPU and it would be a decent little computer.
That "dell docking station" is actually alienware custom EGPU that the connector they use so it gets the highest bandwidth
Nice more videos on old gpu laptops😁😁😁
Can I ask if the motherboard
a520m k v2 can work with daul chanel
been using mine with winterOS and 64 of ram and its a goat honestly
That "docking" port is actually alienwares proprietary egpu doc you have to buy separate, and only alienware egpu box works on it.
External GPU Supports up to Nvidia 2000 series cards.
@buildyourcomputer not sure. Not sure what power supply that alienware egpu comes with
@@jponz85 it's a standalone thing it plugged into Alienware Laptops and minipcs like the Alienware alpha r2 (it isn't a thing anymore)
maybe try repasting the cpu it could fix a bit on temps i think
Great pickup guys!
I never realized how truly enormous those laptop bezels were back in the day.
You should see the laptops we were rocking in the 90s and early 000s. All bezel. Ghosty lcds.
I need more ultra budget pc challenge it was a W serie
It’s basically a *desktop slim*
at this point
You should’ve seen their actual desktop replacement back in 07 when Alienware was still Alienware. The damn thing was basically a table 😂
@@BowsettesFury no way 😂
I still have an Asus GL703VM with the 7700hq and the 1060 6gb. The cpu is a disaster in terms of temperature, the only reasonable thing to do is undervolt it (if the bios is unlocked, seems like the Dell machines from that era had the bios locked so no undervolt possible, can't say for the Alienware ones)
Yeah GL703VM isn't known for having the best temps from that era.
@@Mistercoda Dells with the same cpu are even worse, had 2 on my hands🤣 at least the GL703VM is fixable
@@AeiKei Honestly you've made a mistake if you even think about buying a dell gaming laptop. 💀💀💀💀
@@Mistercodanot me, but I had to clean 2 of them as that's my job
Maybe do a repaste to see if the temps come down.
still rock one of these, battery life has always sucked but plays starfield lol
You may want to repast that or clean it because those temps are high as hell
I am in the same boat for my laptop thing was a good specs years ago when it was built and i paid alot for it but now the thing bearly works and i got a time spy score of like 1970 which is horrible.. It is old now.. Gmsi GS 60 ghost pro with a intel i 7 5700hq. And a gtx 965m 16 gigs of ram.. Ddr3 512 gig super raid.+1Tb hd bluetooth 4.0.. And a 15.6 inch 60 Hz display.. Shes is struggling nowadays to do anything and it be good. Also paid like 809 for it when i purchased it..
Windows 10 : yum yum .....
Windows 11 : ☹
What you there is a modern desktop ....
yo i love your videos
I gotta 2014 Alienware14 and I can’t play some games I wish I could so I bought yalls gateway with the 3050. Way cheaper then what they are now new. Ima keep the Alienware for older games.
it’s 2024 and i’m still using my 15 R3 almost daily since i bought it new in 2017. and yes it runs very hot right out of the box lol. but mine endured all the abuse of gaming and rendering for all these years, meanwhile i’ve read some threads that say owners have killed theirs. i do have repasted mine 3x though. am i just lucky and got the good batch? who knows, it’s alienware😂
I have one right here, battery went pillow mode, screen created some dead pixels, the I7 7700 aged like shit for the newest games...it only worked well after I changed the thermal paste to liquid metal...BUT it was the greatest chassi they ever made...heavy and resistance...was my first gaming laptop, and it was awesome at the time but today I never would recommend anyone to buy one...
I have the Alienware 15 with the 1060 and it has aged, HORRIBLY. It was prime in its time though! Borderlands 2 and many many hours of tf2 were played. Fun times!
I have one of these from 2013 they were hot heavy things
i would try to go for a micro center laptop but the closest micro center is 70 miles away from me😢
Do they not ship ? I know it's better to walk in and see in person, but if they ship, which I'm sure they do, then that's the next best thing bro.
The dell bios will tell you what the battery life is (or isn't)
While I understand the way you are testing, you are seriously doing this laptop a disservice by unlocking the framerates and judging the temperatures. It has a 60hz monitor and doesn't need any games running at higher framerates, it's just gonna unnecessarily stress the CPU leading to your stuttering issues.
I have the 1060 version of this laptop (same CPU) and can confirm temps are worrying some times, it's still kicking strong today. The issue you might have been having with Fullscreen might have been caused by gsync technology (or maybe you just wanted to stress it intentionally unlocking the fps).
I have played both games besides playing WZ3 and no issues after repasting with high quality paste and undervolting this my laptop barely reaches 83c on the CPU and never beyond 72c on the GPU.
Thank you for showcasing this piece though, it can still tear through any AAA title today.
i think it is a good buy i buy rog gl702vs which is similar in specs on november 2023 for 500 buck
I just gave the exact laptop to my carpenter. I bought it new in 2017ish
Yes the battery isnt good but did u ever think that this is a desktop replacement? I have a asus rog with a i7 4720hq gtx960 2 gb and i never thought the battery would last…..too much hardware power means less battery life obviously so its more of a desktop than laptop
This is a monster with desktoo gpu into a laptop, incredible see how a gtx 1070 can fight against rtx 2060m, or the gtx 1080 fighting against rtx 3060m, this old sir can beat youngs laptops 😂
Ohhhh it is my first gaming laptop and that one from sheldon copper
gracias for the content; i am modding an old alienware when i get done ill send a pic peace
That Alienware needs a repaste badly. Mine wont go past the 82c with the 7820hk at 4.2, 4.3ghz and a 1070. Battery for this model its around 50 to 60dll in aliexpress
that shift key looked like it was made for minecraft shifting 😂😂😂
More like Roblox’s 😂
i just purchased anb alienware 17 r4 with an i7 7820hk and a gtx 1080 for $350 to replace my i5 7600k rx6600 desktop i know its a downgrade but i need the "portability" if you could even call it that but it has a 120hz 1440p display so i think its my best price to performance find
Those CPU temps 🔥😂
If it was me I would be changing the screen out for a High refresh rate one.
I would use the hdmi and a basic 60Hz TV screen , but 1080p and good latency ....
I've had a gaming desktop , much less powerfull and i was really satisfied with it while playing on my TV , the 17,3 " screen was better than this , but too small , 40" and 17,3 it isn't the same experience ....
Can you actually upgrade screens in laptops with different screens than the manufacturer provided ?
can u try for a 700 dollars rtx laptop plzz
The only thing making this worth it is that it comes with a monitor attached 🙃
Can we add Starfield and BG3 to the tests?
Daaamn that is a thick boi
hook it up to a 144hz monitor n ur good to go
8:50 *[Pun Intended]*
Speakers sound like crap because the laptop is on top of a mouse pad.... the speakers are still bad but not that bad....
I hate to burst bubble the only thing you really paying for in a Alienware device is the name. there are way better brands like MSI or Asus or Aorus examples which is way better build quality for the same sorta money in laptops. So yeah I don't agree that people should Rush and buy Alienware without knowing this first. They cool to look at but that's about it. However they do cheap out and charge a premium for cheaper parts. This if you buying new. If you buying a alienware used great you can find good deals.
My nephew broke the screen on his and gave it to me. I gutted the laptop and built a custom case for the motherboard, and added components and a pcie slot with a power supply that powers the whole damn thing. My nephew now has a decent gaming desktop. He just needs to fork over cash for my labor.
CPU isn't the stutter problem its the old harddrive
Bro this 1070 easy beat the rtx 2050 in the fortnite 💀💀💀
😂you guys said 60hz but it's not it's a 144hz screen and it's buttery smooth even on video...
What do you do with the Pc's you build
They sell them, and once a month they do a give away on Twitch. This is LITERALLY their business 😂
Is there a better laptop than this in the price range of $400?
7:54 nice country accent
Could you say hi also love the vids ❤❤❤
Why do UA-camrs always test newer games that have constant updates designed for newer PCs and drivers on these retro pc videos generally? Test an rtx 4090 in 2030 and it’ll be meh. It’d be nice to see games of the era and new games. Both are just as easy to access if the os is supported by steam still, but if older gog games or abandonware…
because the vast majority of gamers are playing modern games, look on steam, the top played games rn are those always online, continuous update games. they cater to their audience (and the laptop performed well in the modern titles so I don't see the issue)
not worth 400 ... you can get a better one new for 400
Fact
It has a GPU bottleneck
finally fortnite gameplay is back
can we run forza horizon 5 on this?
Can it run gta roleplay
$400 is not cheap when your country is in an economic crisis.
Yep, but for this amount of money you can only get a celeron or i3 u calculator, still worth it
