    That isn't even a fair comparison IMO, a GT 1030 is normally 70-75$ while an RX 460 is normally 100$. Gt 1030 is meant to go up against RX 550. And the RX 460 is meant to go up against GTX 1050...

      yes but the rx 550 crushes the gt 1030 as well not by such a huge margin but it does especially on the latest drivers however worth bearing in mind a 2200g & 2400g either match or exceed the gt 1030 performance and its an igpu

      its also a stupid idea. If you want to see which is better, you need to make the GPU the ONLY variable that changes. That is how texting works. This test lacks validity because the low end hardware introduces variables that cannot be controlled.

    @desiv1170 5 років тому +2

    Another point you hint at, but is important is the low profile bit. You do mention that the RX 460 has a low profile variant, but you didn't mention that, at least for me, finding one isn't as easy... and finding one at a deal is, at the least, going to be much harder. So if you are looking at placing a card in a SFF PC that needs the low profile, the 1030 has a huge advantage there.

    • @DisamerdScroll
      @DisamerdScroll 7 років тому +69

      DisamerdScroll so for a good budget gpu deal the rx400 series cards are still worth it over a lower tier 500, more so than say the 900 nvidia cards over a lower tier 10 series?

    • @DisamerdScroll
      @DisamerdScroll 7 років тому +4

      it depends on the gpu itself, that being said a 460, 560, 1050 and 950 are mostly the same in terms of performance it really all comes to the price

    People can always argue about what the market pricing is on different cards and whether it's "fair" to compare them, but it doesn't matter, just do your own shopping and see what you can find. NVidia's next step up is the GTX1050, and if you can find a deal on those, then great. There are comparisons between RX460 and the 1050 out there as well, feel free to watch them if they apply to your situation.
    All that matters is that this video gave a very useful comparison between 2 lower priced, low power gaming cards that somebody might be thinking about buying, each running on a realistic PC, running popular mainstream games that many people will want to play.
    Using a less powerful PC to test these cards gives the results a more realistic significance for most people who are in the market for these cards. Of course the results will drift if you use the fastest possible system, but personally I wouldn't find that as relevant to my situation.
    Thank you. This was a very good video.
    In addition to gaming, both the GT1030 and RX460 have hardware acceleration for playing H.265 (HEVC) videos, which can be useful for a HTPC or any system where you don't want to tax the CPU playing those videos.
    When shopping for the GT1030 (not sure if this applies to RX460) make sure you watch what kind of memory is on the cards. Some use DDR4 instead of GDDR5. GDDR5 is much faster. Don't bother with a DDR4 card, get GDDR5.
    If you have a low profile case, or if you need a single slot card, then pay attention to those things also. Each manufacturer has multiple versions of these cards with different memory types, physical dimensions, and with fan or passive cooling.
    EBay US has some very good deals on the RX460 right now. Large supply of MSI produced HP cards apparently being liquidated, still new. They're about the same price (actually slightly cheaper) than the GT1030 sales I saw on Amazon recently.
    I was shopping for an nVidia card, because that's generally my preference, but stumbled into the RX460 listings and bought one of those instead.

      Phil Atkins I have the actively cooled 1030 from MSI and wish it was passively cooled. I could have then installed a fan on that so that it sustains its boost clock of 1750 MHz under higher loads for longer. The actively cooled variant hits 82 degrees Celsius and drops to the advertised boost clock of 1500 to 1550 MHz.

    I'm aware this is a while back, but currently RX460 is like £120. You can get that low profile MSI GT1030 for £70. So the 1030 might be a better deal for some folk now as the price/performance ratio seems far more comparable. I hear the new RX550 is a good competitor to the 1030 (and fits in low profile PCs), but again it's closer to the £100 mark.

    I just recently built a PC and I expected some more medium spec gaming performance but I've been blown away by what I've gotten. My build is:
    G4560 @ 3.5ghz
    8GB of DDR4
    500w EVGA Bronze PSU
    EVGA GTX 1050ti SSC 4GB
    120GB PNY SSD
    500GB Sandisk SSD
    I usually play older titles like Battlefield 4, World of Tanks, Dirt 3 Rally, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and more. So far I've been able to max out the settings. Battlefield 4 I could max at 1080p and still get around 100+fps. This rig is way more powerful than I expected. Props to the 4560 lol.

    I'm pretty impressed with the performance of both of these, though it shouldn't be as much of a surprise as it was considering that I started out with a 5670 in 2010 and it was more than adequate for playing Crysis and Crysis 2, Borderlands, etc. Only issue I had was that I had a Pentium D prebuilt at the time, and when I replaced that with an i3 build then the 5670 only shone all the more.
    I'm lucky enough to have got a 1060 6GB at launch and with only a $20 premium over MSRP, and I had a 7870 before this, so it's easy to forget when I'm pushing all my settings way up and only having to fiddle with one or two things in most games to get the frame rate I want, that these low end cards can still offer great performance even in the most current games.

    I don't like that people compare a 1030 with graphics cards with more TDP. That is not fair. The RX460 is much closer to the 1050 and draws even more power. The 1030 is meant to be used in energy saving computers. I bought a Fujitsu Esprimo 5731 with it's 280 W power supply and threw the 1030 at it. Works like a charm with silent 43°C under full load passive cooled. I am sure it could handle a 1050 too, but not a RX460, which seems to need a min. 450W power supply. So even if the 1050 costs 20 $/€ more, I would still choose it.

    I have a sapphire nitro RX 460 4gb at the moment, I paid $120 at the right time! But now I am going to upgrade to the RX 580 8gb! To me, it is a little weird that the sapphire's run on only 8 pci-e lanes, but there are a few 460's which use 16 pci-e lanes! I do have a MSI B250M motherboard, I5 7600K and 16 gb Geil Evo Potenza DDR4 2133! That memory I bought at the right time as well, since it was only $82.99 for the dual channel kit! I got lucky on all my buys, paying only $60 for a 240gb ssd and $40 each for 120gb ssd's all three have 430 mb/s or greater read and write speeds!

    I have the gt 1030 (gdrr5 version) paired with an i5-3470 with 8gb of ram and the average fps on cs go is around 140 and fortnite on 1080p all on low (except view distance) i get around 90-145 fps (if running background apps)
    Edit: I also have a 240 watt psu so the rx 460 would't really be the best choice because of the 30 watt to 75 watt power draw (if you're trying to save wattage and just my opinion

    I was wondering Matt if you could do a follow up video using the gt 1030 without it throttling from heat by using an active cooling fan? Some of the older systems out there don't reliably have a 75 watt PCI-E slot. Thanks :)

    A lot of times these low end cards don't offer a significant performance increase from cpu powered graphics.

      aidan c. People still use the best CPU possible to be more official. Although yes it's not realistic it can happen. Rn I am using an i7 6700 with a GTX 750 ti so it's similar to those highend benchmarks
      Edit: actually it's a QHQG overclocked to the same clock speed as a stock 6700

    If they did a Graphics card with two 1030 GPU's built in, would consume around 50-60 watts and be ultra efficient, I think graphics cards should have a slot in the back for Ram cartridge, so we can use DDR3 or DDR4 to upgrade the ram even more

    • @TechByMattB
      @TechByMattB  7 років тому

      I did have to update the bios on this board, but from what I have heard most of the H110 boards are now shipping with updated bios. With that being said B250 boards are guaranteed to work out of the box, so if you find a good deal on a B250 board I would just buy that.

    Late to the party, I know, but, yes, let's test a passively-cooled card against a fan-cooled card and call it an apples to apples comparison. And a fan-cooled GT 1030 can be fully OCed while still using about half the power of the RX. Just sayin' ......

    You're comparing a passively cooled card to a air cooled card. Passive cards tend to be clocked down slightly. Sorry but this isn't a fair comparison.

    • @TechByMattB
      @TechByMattB  6 років тому +1

      The passively cooled and air cooled gt 1030's from MSI are clocked exactly the same and with adequate case airflow the passive version has better cooling performance: www.tomshardware.co.uk/nvidia-geforce-gt-1030-2gb,review-33949-10.html

    Have I lost my mind, ur going on sale vs not on sale and then asking which is better? Card vs card straight up would make 100% sense, having one be on sale and not the other makes zero sense, If that is helpful to anybody then I'm lost, second thing I don't understand is u give age as part of criteria for looking for deals, since when has age had anything to do with that?

    • @twistednemo
      @twistednemo 7 років тому +3

      BowBowZ My actively cooled 1030 boosts to over 1700 MHz as long as the temperature stays below 80 degrees Celsius. When it hits the 82 degree limit, it drops to 1650 MHz. While gaming it rarely runs at the advertised 1500 to 1550 MHz boost clock. Always over that number. I wish mine was passively cooled so that I could have installed a fan on top of it to sustain the boost clock. Haven't tried overclocking.
