The GT 1030 makes sense for specific use cases, like upgrading older OEM PCs with weak PSUs. A lot of older PCs are a cheap SSD, a stick of RAM, and a GT 1030 away from being able to handle basic computing, web browsing, 4k youtube viewing, and some light gaming.

    • @ToolofSociety
      @ToolofSociety Рік тому +1

"basic computing" you're talking about a machine that is vastly faster than what a gaming machine was decades ago and you're like "yeah it can do basic computing like check email"... LOL
My secondary gaming system that I consider my portable desktop is an elite 8300 SFF HP/compaq business machine I bought off ebay many moons ago. A cheap i7-3770, 16 gb ram , a SSD and some spinners combined with the gt1030 gddr5 card allow me to play almost every game I play on my ryzen 5 3600 system (it even plays GTAV well at 1080p)... Granted with the way developers are gobbling up VRAM it's definitely obsolete for bleeding edge fancy poorly optimized games that the AAA industry likes releasing...

    • @ToolofSociety
      @ToolofSociety 10 місяців тому

@@AdanSanchez5468 I would NOT get a GT1030 today. If you're stuck in a small form factor an RX6400 isn't much more and is vastly better. Though keep in mind that the RX6400 lacks H264/5 hardware encoding.
The GPU is the weakest part by far in my i7 setup.
My latest frankencomputer is an older rosewill case that has a dell optiplex 7010 motherboard in it with an e3-1230 CPU both bought off ebay from different sellers for $28 total delivered. 2x 4gb and 1x 8gb sticks of ddr3 in dual channel mode (moving to 2x8gb soon), a SP A55 512GB SSD ($22 amazon). GTX660 2GB.
The Frankencomputer is going to replace the SFF i7 system above as my secondary machine. The GTX660 is just so much more capable than the gt1030. There are downsides though as the dell motherboard isn't happy not having all it's connections made. I had to look online for wiring diagrams and pinouts (there are adapters on amazon). You can get it to run with just two pins but it will ask for you to press f1 on boot up. Other than that it connects to my standard corsair PSU that I bought cheap off a newegg sale +5 years ago. I had to cut the motherboard's CPU backplate to allow me to use a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ evo.
The e3-1230 CPU is basically an i7-3770 rebadged in XEON speak. Under full boost the e3-1230 clocks in at 300mhz lower than the i7 version. In practice it's not noticeable outside of some specific benchmarks.
If you're good at googling and following directions it's a fun project PC that has the capability to player newer games depending on the GPU used.

Yes, but there's a reason the GT 1030 commands a premium versus its specs and gaming performance. These are the perfect upgrade for an older OEM pc with a weak power supply. If you buy a more powerful GPU, you also need to buy a PSU. There are a lot of PCs from the LGA 775 and AM3 eras that are just a couple GB of RAM and a GT1030 away from being capable of basic computing, web browsing, and 4k youtube video viewing in 2023. GT 1030 can be found on the used market for $40-60, so not a bad deal at those prices.

I do want an upgrade to a GTX 1050 ti/1650/super or future lower powered GPU with my Ryzen 5. 35 watt max usage and little heat and power is a win in my book. Older or less demanding games runs great. Triple A titles that need more oomph I can always run on my gaming rig. I'm still surprised how well this card performs. I've just bought the GT11030 DDR5 for 3 main reasons
    1. Fanless silence
    2. Low power consumption
    3. I was impressed with the NVIDIA control panel for a GT610 in my other PC, for tweaking the graphics. Other maker's video cards do not seem to have this great feature.
Your main criticism of it appears to be its gaming performance.
Luckily, I'm not a gamer and use my PC for share trading, streaming videos, word processing, and spreadsheet work.
I'm basing the purchase on my great experience with the GT610.

a ryzen APU like an R5 5600G, and even their older models like the R5 4650g has graphics performance already exceeding the 1030.
it's what I reccomend to my friends if they build a DIY PC for basic desktop use.
but if you already have a desktop and you just need a video output, and don't care about gaming performance
a 1030 for more than $100 is too much money
2nd hand marketplaces has endless listings of "not for gaming" GPUs for dirt cheap.
one look at my local 2nd hand marketplace show GT 710s and GT1030 as cheap as 20 bucks
and if you are a little on the jank side, a 9500 GT can be had for as cheap as 2 dollars!!!
at those prices, you could just buy another one if they die.

It made a lot of sense for my specific use case, i was putting it in my Dell Optiplex 780 from 2008 which used a weird Dell specific form factor (wouldn't fit dual slot cards) and no PCIe power cables. It was a substantial upgrade over the AMD FirePro V5800 graphics card I was using prior. I could actually *play* many of the games I wanted with acceptable performance! Now all I have it for is a tester card, for if my RX 580 decides not to output anything and i need something to just output video to a monitor. It's just fine for that. Occasionally I might screw around and try to game on it like I used to.

My perception (and use) of 1030 was always "The user needs 3+ monitors on their system". Being low power, passive, and sometimes low profile was usually an upside in these systems.
I think someone already mentioned it here but Vega 7/8 in Ryzen 2000G/3000G should be on par with this GPU, so instead of going with dGPU, one could spend a bit more money on something like 4600G or 5600G for a budget gaming PC,have the same or better performance with lower power consumption and less "hassle" of using a quite old used card.

Couple of notes and corrections there:
0:45 this was not "first crypto bubble" by any means. It was first etherium boom.
There no mention of OC possibilities. Due to fact that this gpu was pretty slow as is, you could just slide OC sliders in MSI afterburner all the way to the right and get like +10-15% perf from thin air.
7:14 You said this game unplayble cause of auto upscaling, but never show us fps while it off. On my overclocked mx150 (notebook analog of 1030) I got ~65-70 fps in OW2 without scaling and probably on max settings (I don't really remember what settings I was using). So it is at least playable if you stuck with old notebook.
6:55 Genshin is also playable with fsr. A bit blurry, but you can squeeze that 60fps lock out of it. Sadly, going beyond that is not possible even with unlocked fps and low settings.

Recently got a great deal on an ACER XC-830-UW91 with a Celeron J4125, 4GB and 250GB SSD (laptop parts in a desktop form factor) with a 65W laptop power supply. It has a PCIE slot for Video upgrade so I tried my GT 1030 in it = no work. Then I ordered a 90W power supply to see if that would help and let me install the GT 1030 = still no work. If I had the ACER XC-830 version with the Pentium Silver J5005 the GT 1030 and even a GTX 1050 Ti would have worked but not with the Celeron J4125. I would assume the reason is, passive cooling and silent, would be close to the max that you would use in a home serve for low power draw >35w and combined that with a SBC like Zimmablade, possible Pi supports zimmaboards anything low power then combained with a N100 node and proxmox you can have virtual systems with half decent GPU with proxmox 8.0 enabling IMMO support, also would be interested and worth mentioning that people might be able to virtualise Retro gaming/ emulation anywhere cross plate form it opens all possibilities and I can see it getting better imagine POE ++ powering a low powered intel N100 and 1030OC ( for this reason I got a Mini pc from Ali-express as a node >30W idle is like 7w and then with a m.2 converter or SBC PCIE draw you wouldn’t need external device for power…
Hope this explains one use case of why as 1050 is unplayable in most chips so 1030 fits a nice top end of power, performance, and passive

Get a i5-10400f! The 16GB ram upgrade was unneccesary unless you use workstation loads.

If these were commonly new for about 50 quid. 80 plus quid seems far too high.

I think trying AAA games at 1080p with this car is just mean, 720p is what people with this card would try
