The RX 560 - Surprisingly Capable In 2022!

  • Back in 2017 the AMD RX 560 was a decent budget graphics card that improved upon it's predecessor and gave Nvidia's GTX 1050 a good run for it's money.
These days the slightly more expensive 4GB version is the better buy, but just how well does it hold up in modern games?

The PowerColor Red Dragon versions are easier to find, at least here in the states, just make sure it's not a cutdown variant. I have the full fat CU Power Color AMD RX 560 4GB card I snagged off eBay in mid 2018 for $65 shipped with the OG box, and it's been a fantastic little workhorse running Solus Linux with the open source kernel drivers. I do everything from office work, video editing 720p/1080p video, transferring old VHS tapes(mostly family stuff like weddings, vacations, Christmas, etc..), watching multiple video streams on dual 24in 1080p 75hz monitors, I just down my settings down a bit in games, and I'm happy enough, and all of this paired with what some would call a weak system being a Gigabyte Micro ATX FM2+ board, AMD A10 5800K APU turboed to 4.1Ghz - 4.3Ghz, and the 16GB DDR3 RAM OC to 2133Mhz, all on air cooling in a Fractal Design Core 1000 case.

Same in the states where I am at. If you do find one they are way marked up, even second hand, to the point where it's the same cost to switch over to a setup that would take a full sized card.

Rocking the RX 570 8GB model and it's actually playing games at 1440p between medium/high/ultra settings which astounds me. Elite Dangerous Horizons constant 100fps in space and combat in space etc, when running Odyssey (the FPS expansion) it hovers around 59/60 again at high preset. Best game experience has been Euro Truck Sim² at max/ultra preset and full everything and getting 100fps (my refresh rate) in any scene it's pretty amazing, does a better job than my laptop's RX 5600M (Dell G5 5505) :3 it's a banging card even today! But one income for a 8 year old boy and one adult dont leave room for hugh investments these days (we can all sing this song nowadays i guess).
However. I manged to get my hands on a Acer Nitro 515-42 with the Ryzen 5 2500 and the RX 560X 4GB.
The previous owner allready upgraded the RAM to 16GB Dual Channel DDR4 and put in a 512GB Nvme Drive.

Until recently I owned a gaming laptop with a 4gb variant of the gtx 1050 (non-ti), people didn't believe me when I told them I could run around 50fps in The Witcher 3 with medium/a few high settings - a lot of people don't realize that these budget cards are still reasonably capable for gaming, though I'd definitely want 4gb of VRAM minimum these days. @@mediumsurmoon6283 Yeah, in most cases it should do it. Works in the same way really. You start the game in windowed mode at lower resolution, then with Lossless Scaling you get a few options on how to scale it up and FSR is one of em. Basically turns the game into borderless windowed mode all upscaled.
The neat thing with AMD that they made FSR open source is that this be a decent option for games that not have native FSR support yet.

With a little voltage boost on a stock 550 BIOS, I am running 1550Mhz GPU and 2000Mhz RAM (8000Mhz) totally stable, pushes a fairly steady 30+ FPS (30 - 40 FPS) in most modern AAA games and rarely dips much lower (typically ~28 FPS) in heavy action / large open world scenes. 1080p is fine at 30 FPS typical, but lower res can seen much higher frame rates, so I tend to play with a balanced resolution / frame rate depending on the type of game. Surprisingly decent results for such a weak GPU...

Mine is at 1350MHz 1.075V core and 2000MHz VRAM 0.875V but no watercooling sadly haha. When i get a better GPU in the future i'll try to mod the BIOS so I can set the RX 550 core at 1.2V and see if the frequency can scale a bit higher

No, those GPU arent meant for gaming, just too weak, should have buy a 750ti instead for around the same price

yes! i had a RX 560 OC as my first GPU during that first gpu crisis back in like 2018, i think? I was great for most games at medium settings for me. I gave it to my little brother as his first Gaming PC after I bought a RX 580 Nitro Pulse on ebay bid for $35. I was in bad condition because i guess he lived near a beach and the ports were caked in rust. I cleaned it up and it has been running for the past 3 years!

Hello! Just wanted to share a bit of low spec wisdom about cyberpunk. If you add the mods "cyber engine tweaks" (and enable it's performane functions) and "no fog mod" to the game you will get an over 60 fps average with no obvious visual sacrifice @ 1080p low with high quality FSR. I've got a 2GB Rx460 and I get a steady 40-50 fps at all times.

  • @anakimusaki6181

Wow really amazing results. It gets lots of performace plus by FSR.
I am suprised that ist works this fine in 1080p.
Is there a big performance plus when it runs on 720p ?

I used to have Sapphire Pulse RX560 4GB. It was my first card after years of playing with iGPU. I'm impressed it can play most games in 1080p with Medium-High settings. If you want get one, I would recommend Sapphire since it has very good headroom to OC and it is one of RX560 that requires 6-pin PCIe cable.

The 460/560 often goes around 140usd in my area for the 4gb version with the 1050ti often 10 to 20usd more
But from what i see in the used market the 4gb version of any card is starting to be priced reasonably, where as the 8gb version is sometimes double of their 4gb counterpart

my daughter is still rocking my old 560 in her 6700k rig . I only dropped the card in there about 18months ago where it lived happily for years in my bedroom gaming setup after it got swapped out for a cheap 1650 super before things went stupid. it was actually totally fine until I started moding skyrim and fallout 4 . also it wasnt a bad mining card if you were into that sort of thing

In Cyberpunk I can REALLY recommend using Dynamic Resolution (together with FSR Auto, which is standard). With a card like this opting for a 30fps lock (preferably in the graphics software as it has even frame pacing) and you will see yourself doing better than FSR Quality with a very stable console-like 30fps cap.
I do this with the 6600XT. I lock my framerate at 50fps instead of 60 (since I have a freesync monitor) and the game basically runs at 1500p-1600p with balanced settings. indoor scenes and main missions it reaches 1800p... So perhaps slower cards will reach 1080p 30fps in indoor main mission scenes?

I've got the Sapphire Pulse version of the RX560 and although I wouldn't call it surprisingly capable, it's still decent in games that have an upscale setting.
I was also surprised you didn't include FH5 this time, since I found it to be one of the better running new games on this card.

Nice video as always. Still kinda glad I got the 1050 ti. Honestly I prefer low settings for higher framerate and I rarely play games released after like 2015 so honestly I wouldn't be too worried if I did have that or an even my old 1030. I could do with an upgrade from my i3 8100 tho xD

For 60 FPS and before 2015 that i3 is fine. You can play Ultra 1080p 60 FPS DX9 and DX 10 games, then adjust some settings for DX 11 before 2015 or the first half of the PS4 era...

Yea fr. I suppose I mentioned upgrading my cpu because even games from like a decade ago like Kerbal Space Program and space engineers quickly get demanding with higher part counts. But yeah it’s gotten through practically everything fine, although I do record and edit videos occasionally which could be improved but not really worth changing something that works also not worth the price of something new in this market lol

I bought the MSI Aero ITX version as a temporary replacement for an XFX 580 during the previous crypto-craze (which I found at an amazing price of just 200€ during Black Friday, but had absolutely horrible coil whine - so I decided to return it) and buy this for 130€ instead. Then, I changed it with a 580 Pulse one year later (which I also god brand new from our local ebay for 130€) and I have to admit, for eSports and PS4-like gaming it was very good.
Fun fact: my version also had a core clock of 1196 MHz with no 6-pin connector, yet I managed to OC it to 1.3GHz, which was the frequency of the "standard" 560s. This helped decisively in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, which would have otherwise dropped in intensive scenes below 30FPS on High settings/1080p.

I plan to upgrade my ram and cpu to 16gb and a 5600x. My question is will that bump up the framerate in some games or will it generally run the same? I have currently a ryzen 1600 with 8gb ram.

I bought an asus k555LJ recently, it's got a 2 core 2,7ghz i5 and a gtx920m and 6gb of ram, I have to say after I launched minecraft I did not expect things games to run well, after installing optifine I got round 120fps most of the time, not bad, I installed gta V on it to just see if it'd run and boy did it, high textures and mix of normal/high settings with some fxaa ran at ~35fps, I oc'd the gpu +135(afterburner cap) on core and +225 on mem got me to an average above 40, have to say this really suprised me, I have to say for 125 pounds a great purchase, it does have screen flickering issue though, it happens after installing the intel igpu driver and running on battery, otherwise perfectly fine, almost no flex when pushing on the keyboard, trackpad is great but audio is pretty lacking
