- We're impressed with all the crazy ROM hacks out there today, but we lose interest in playing them fairly quickly. But what kinds of ROM hacks might interest someone who normally doesn't play ROM hacks? In this episode, Coury takes a look ROM hacks of a more utilitarian nature.

My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more. - Ігри
Huh. I always thought the slow-mo during Super Mario World’s circle out was a stylistic choice!
ovinophile Same here, it almost feels wrong to fix it.
To me it always felt like actual slowdown. It comes on quick, then struggles, then goes quick again. Every SNES game should be SA-1 patched!
Yeah same here. I was today years old when I found out about that.
I was just like "Hey is this console slowing down or has Nintendo gone nuts"
Yeah. The fixed animation seems much too fast imo
The "no crying" hack for Yoshi's Island.
That hack has existed since the game came out. It's called "Just Don't Get Hit!"
@@ShyGuyXXL 🤦🏻♂️
So no challenge to the game?!
@@mealwheels3562 All the challenge is still there, you just don't have to hear an annoying squeal all the time.
Phillip Rhoades oh sorry I thought you meant like he doesn’t fall of yoshi when hit, having reread what you said I totally get you know, yeah get rid of the baby mario crying
A ROM hack adding new features is one thing. But re-coding the main logic of a game to use the SA-1 co-processor just to make the game run smoother? That is serious next-level dedication (and incredibly time-consuming)...
I agree. Gradius III plays amazingly now. It's like a new a game.
IIRC, the SA-1 is the same CPU as the SNES', just running at 4x the speed. So no porting was needed.
That person must be a genius at ASM programming.
@@DarthMotzkus as fellow br I agree, now let me proceed with my soccer match
@@IanTester That's something of an oversimplification. It's true that much of the same code can run on the SA-1 and the SNES CPU, but it's not a drop-in replacement. There are still things you have to use the SNES CPU for, so the game has to be altered to run different pieces of the engine on both chips at the same time, without getting in each other's way. You're not rewriting code for a different chip, but you *are* rewriting code in some very significant ways.
Sonic 3 Complete is simply the best way of playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles. It amends continuity quirks. And it gives the player so much choice on their in game preferences.
isn't Sonic 3 A.I.R better though?
That's not a romhack, it's a PC rebuild of the game that loads assets from the rom.
Yea, I was kinda shocked that Sonic 3 Complete wasn't even mentioned in the video.
@@Electroudon06 No, sonic 3 complete is way better than AIR
@@retropulse03 what makes Complete way better than AIR?
Romhackers are living legends, man, they do such a generous service to the community. Let me mention a few of my favorites:
Live-A-Live: the Aeon Genesis Translation is stupendous, what more can I say
Fire Emblem 4 & 5: Project Naga and Project Exile, again, superb translations.
Fire Emblem: Binary is incredible, it's a global rebalancing and retelling of FE4, spectacular
Castlevania II Retranslated + Map totally elevates the antiquated and clunky old game.
Clock Tower, Ganpuru: Gunman's Proof, Star Ocean, Front Mission: Gun Hazard, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Front Mission II: Gun Hazard, Tengai Makyou Zero, Adventures of Hourai High are all fantastic translations that didn't get mentioned in the video.
There's the MSU-1 series of patches that add CD-quality music to old games. Then there's smaller stuff that fixes nagging issues. Harvest Moon resets your accomplishments if you go too high, there's a patch to get that out. There's a patch that cleans up the spelling errors in Turtles in Time. Thank you romhackers!
Are the Fire Emblem translations finally complete? Because i've read they have been like 98% complete for over a decade. Also, is Aeon Genesis the only translation of Live A Live? Because I just ordered a repro cart and I wonder if that's the translation being used.
I might need that Harvest Moon hack, I always wanted to sit with my friend who learned Japanese ans fix the disgusting old translations on the OG games, but I can't even play em because they're so weird. Which is lame coming from someone with my level of crazy fandom
Beautiful sign off, not marred with UA-cam babble or pandering. What an amazing piece of work you have here. Thank you.
Honestly I couldn’t tell the difference between the screens in the PS1 de-dithering section. Great video as always. Very concise and informative 🙂👍
Same, for the most part, but I'm watching on a phone
Same
I'd also encourage anybody who has enjoyed a rom hack from romhacking.net to leave a review quickly. I'm sure the author would appreciate it! Dozens or hundreds of hours go into many of these hacks and you don't really have a way to know if anyone liked it, or how it could be improved
That Earthbound button hack you mentioned is the same function of the L button which came standard with the game.
That's what I was thinking when he showed it. Seems especially pointless :/
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he probably didn't know or just prefers to use the A button.
The New Controls hack also suppresses the "No problem here." text when using the A button to check, and entirely removes "Talk to" and "Check" from the menu (that is now accessed via X).
There have been some other QoL hacks in the EB community--a Run button hack has been around for a while, for instance. Also, for the purposes of the EarthBound Randomizer, I developed a "Ludicrous Text Speed" hack that makes all text, even battle text, display instantly; a "Goods Menu Equip" patch that lets you equip items from the Goods menu instead of getting an annoying error message, and a "R Button Drop" patch that uses the R Button to instantly drop the last item received from a chest or battle (with a little "pewww" sound effect.)
@@stochaztic Now those are some definite improvements. Thanks for clarifying! It's awesome to see rom hackers and contributors participate in discussions!
Regarding Earthbound: Is there a QoL hack to fix the grinding issues when new characters come into the party? Because boy that was a shock to the system when I tried playing Earthbound on the Virtual Console.
When I hear the term "color restoration", it is always the GBA that springs to my mind. I didn't even know that that existed for other systems!
Some of the Genesis/MegaDrive ones are fantastic. They show off how the system's colour palette should have been used by the original developers if they put in the time.
@@FerrariKangaroo Yea I was hoping for more mentions of those rather than passing screenshots. Such as OutRun.
Just want to give kudos to the creators of this channel for bringing high quality well researched, respectful and professional content. Amazing job.
I was waiting for you to mention the phenomenal Mother 3 fan translation. Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of Earthbound.
any recommendation or settings for a gba emulator because I have a terrible fluctuating white radio noise sound when I try to play mother 3
This is probably my favorite UA-cam channel of all time. Out of my 12 years of watching videos on this site and seeing countless channels come and go, decline and rise, etc. This channel over the course of it's existence has only improved and maintained a high level of quality and polish that's never wavered, only increased. Coury, Try, if you guys ever see this I want you guys to know that you've got a great thing going with MLiG. Keep it up, I'll be a viewer from now and till the end.
[Coury] Wow, thank you so much! Thanks for continuing to watch and enjoy, and we hope that we don't let you down!
Another great video as usual, lots of great info. I especially like the dithering stuff regarding PlayStation stuff. However, (and I'm sure you both already know this) be prepared to hear from the retro gatekeepers who frown upon "quality of life" hacks. Because after all, are you *really* beating Castlevania, if you're not doing it while hanging upside down with one arm tied behind your back?
Snes drunk! I love your channel, too. You, MLIG, and GameSack are some of my favorite retro channels because of the effort and quality put in. Thank you!
Hey! I've been hunting through the comments section for awhile and I'm happy to report I've seen none of these anti-QoL comments you speak of.
That's the thing. Either you want to beat Castlevania or you want to play it. You're there for the challenge or the fun. So it's good to have both options.
@@NickEnlowe Yeah MLiG has a much kinder audience than I do lol
@@SNESdrunk Well, eventually I found a couple, but I had to scroll down quite a bit. :D
A personal favourite hack of mine is the fan translation of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere. Outside of Japan the game was cut down significantly, reducing the number of missions from 52 to 36 and cutting two aircraft. But the story was butchered horribly, as all branching paths were cut, all cutscenes removed and the premise greatly simplified. This translation is simply the Japanese game with full English subtitles for all pieces of dialogue found throughout the game. The international version is merely okay, but the JP version is really a must-play for a fan of classic Japanese sci-fi storytelling like Ghost In the Shell or Evangelion.
Now I gotta go back and try this ROM hack. I fucking love the Ace Combat series. I started with 4 on the PS2, but went back to play the older titles and was disappointed that Ace Combat 3 had a lot of cut content. I played the original Japanese version, and it's probably the best Ace Combat game next to Ace Combat 5.
@@DeadEyeJ 3 for me is a close second behind Zero, primarily for the little adjustments the PS2 games made to streamline the gameplay, but 3 was the last game I played in the series (yet to play 7 sadly) and was surprised in how unlike the other PS1 games it feels.
Ace Combat 3 just impressed the heck outta me. It's an expansive game that reaches for the stars. Well, quite literary even. I just scrolled down the comments just to see if someone mentioned it. While I wouldn't call it the best, or even one of the best games in the series, it's the most interesting for sure and I can't wait until we move a bit closer and closer in the storyline. Also, 7 is pretty good!
I really need to try this...
I grew up on AC04 but 5 blew me away. Never got around to the PS1 titles but it sounds like I won't be disappointed
yeah this one is truly outstanding!
I’m a big fan of the original block physics patch for Super Mario All Stars, which fixes the block physics for SMB1 & SMBLL to match the NES originals.
Fun fact: The Mario speedrunning community only recognizes those two games with their physics patches.
These are some amazing quality of life updates/hacks, thanks for sharing! I'll definitely be trying out the de-dithering patching feature for PS1 games, that might be my favorite here.
You were a year late
How u gonna talk about Fan Translations and not even mention Mother 3! For shame!
I believe his aim with this video was to unearth some of the more obscure hacks out there; the Mother 3 fan translation is one of the most popular ones, so it makes sense that he wouldn't touch upon.
@@Jordan3DS I belive in satan.
I downloaded the fan translations of the Japanese SNES Final Fantasy games because they crippled the NTSC versions in terms of multiplayer support.
or star ocean.
@@muelabruno66 No
One of my favorite rom hacks is Pokemon Liquid Crystal. It's essentially Pokemon Crystal with Fire Red graphics from the GBA. It looks fantastic.
waltuh
I did a lot of research on these types of hacks when I was setting up my RaspPi, and yet I still managed to learn some new stuff from this video, thanks!
Wow! Thanks for the mention, guys. Great video as always! The potential advantage gained by making very small changes to games does indeed get buried beneath the patches that intend to be flashy or insane. Sometimes a minor tweak can go a long way.
The best rom hack is the one that turns off baby Mario's crying in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
No contest.
Is that actually a thing? Praise the lord!!
Uh... there's always been a hack for that from the day it came out, without need for any alteration of the game. It's called "git gud".
if only they did the same thing for N64's Zelda where they disable the stupid fairy's saying Hey...Yo ever 2 seconds...annoying as anything.
The localized Samurai Pizza Cats fan translation was another hidden gem.
Here’s another fan translation to take note of: Sailor Moon-Another Story for the Super Famicom received an updated translation patch this year. English translation patches can be traced back to 1999 (with repro carts following years later), but 2019 is when we can say that the game is now complete and ready to play!
"Updated" translation is a better word. The game received full English fan-translation years ago. But apparently it was full of translation errors and changes. Still, it is nice to get a more complete translation.
P.Scoop Thanks for the proper word to describe the patch (edited the comment to reflect that). Wonder if there will be any repro carts that will use updated translation patch.
I heard the Sailor Moon visual novel for PC Engine CD got a translation recently, too! Finally find out what they're saying about all those silly little choices you can make!
Metroid+ uses the two player save system because it's lifted from Zelda.
The Castlevania 2 Retranslation project is amazing, it really makes playing that game a breeze, especially with the overworld map and save features baked in
I do very much like the quality of life and battery save hacks. Those are very handy and I use those quite often myself. The Metroid Save + Minimap hack is particularly useful and I love it.
I wish more games like the Mega Man series had them.
There's also Metroid: Zero Mission for having a map, but I'm not sure what all they changed (besides the graphics and sound, obviously). Also it's a GBA game, so it would have a lower resolution.
Altered Beast with the sound restoration + color hacks is like a whole new game. Absolutely love it!
FinalManaTrigger I gotta try this one
Your audio mixing is perfect. Thank you for giving this often-overlooked aspect of UA-cam videos. Your video is also just as well done as well as your narration. Keep up the excellent work!
Um, there was no Hack required for one-button conversations with NPCs. It was the L button.
If you're talking about Earthbound, not everyone knew that(I didn't) and it's not very intuitive. Changing it to the "A" button makes more sense.
As someone else said. "The New Controls hack also suppresses the "No problem here." text when using the A button to check, and entirely removes "Talk to" and "Check" from the menu (that is now accessed via X)."
If he was going to bring up a pointless hack for EarthBound I wish he'd used the Consistency patch. It changes some mistranslations/typo's like Pokey->Porky and changes the prefixes of certain PSI moves to PK. Oh, and also it optionally adds a run button.
Mother3 fan translation needs to be mentioned here. It's a huge game and took a lot of effort to translate.
Persona 2 eternal sin was another massive game with a LOT of complex text that saw a top quality fan translation.
I've also encountered a full-on parodius (MSX) localization down to the game manual
Super Robot Wars series too. SRW Alpha has a translation thats been in the works since **2007** and was recently restarted a year ago (along with SRW4). That game was 6mb of text. That's 6e+6 characters. Character bios are "about 200K apiece" alone.
The same team also released a new translation for SRW3 2 weeks ago, as the 2002 translation was... funny. Worth mentioning that the αG translators are now doing official English translations for the newer games too now.
Some other amazing ROM hacks I'd like to recommend:
- Mother 25 Faithful (EarthBound Beginnings)
- MaternalBound Omega (EarthBound)
- Sonic 3 Complete (Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles)
- Final Fantasy IV: Namingway Edition
- The Mother 3 Fan Translation (a given at this point, but still worth pointing out)
[Coury] Thanks! I'll make note of these for a follow up video.
Amazing video. Thanks for making this - I love QOL and utility hacks like this. I knew of most of them already, but you did point out some that I had no idea about and can't wait to try. Seriously love all your videos.
Pokémon hacks that allow you to catch all Pokémon without trading never get old.
I like the ones that rebalance pokemon to make weak ones more viable, and give enemy trainers teams with more synergy, for more exciting fights.
"Hacks such as Avgn in Megaman, onion rings Sonic"
Me: Oh no not more of this shit...
"And those types of hacks really bore me"
Me: Thank you so much instant like
Wait what the heck? Just yesterday I recorded a Super Mario Land DX Longplay and recommended your channel on it. Now you upload this?
It's destiny
what the hack* ;)
I love Working Designs work so much, but I get why some people don’t. Glad there’s another option for those people!
[Coury] Same. The Lunar 2 Un-Worked is the main one that interests me. Someone else in the comments said they thought it was easy, but for some reason I have memories of Borgan and Zophar being insanely difficult.
Incredible and deep informative work here. I love how thorough you are when you talk about retro games.
This video is a feast to the eyes and ears.
Glad you covered these type of rom hacks Coury. While fan hacks are a fun novelty it's the kind that restore, improve or fix that make games so much better in my experience.
If you're a Rom hacker reading this, please give us some Mystical Ninja/Goemon goodness!
[Try4ce] Agreed. There has been some recent work on that recently - translations for the Famcom RPGs and Goemon 2 on Super Famicom - but the third and fourth SNES games, along with all of the PS1 games, are in dire need of translations!
*you're
@@RedDragon1444 Fixed and thanks
"Say they haven't aged without taking into account the time period and limitations"
If they're saying it hasn't aged well, that's exactly what they're doing. That's the whole point of the phrase.
I was thinking the same thing.
I always appreciate the reverence for the content and video game restoration in your videos.
Great Stuff as always.
I appreciate the placement of your ads, concluding sections, instead of interrupting cliffhangers. It makes me more willing to watch thru the ad, which makes you more money I think.
Lot of good GBA hacks that make games less awful on backlit screens.
Also shoutout to the voice mod for Zelda Minish Cap that replaces the imo not very fitting Ocarina of Time voice samples with ones from Wind Waker, matching the style a lot better.
[Coury] I'll put this on the list for the eventual follow up! Thanks!
Metroid Fusion Repalette is one example of this.
I find the ps1 dithering to be part of its charm.
It is nice for plenty of games, but there are some arcade ports that didn't have dithering on the original so it just looks weird with it on, and I'm glad we now have the ability to turn it off on those titles.
Such great production quality, kudos!
Kudos for remembering the SF3 translation. It is of excellent quality and gives fans the chance to play one of the most underrated strategy-RPGs EVER.
indeed, can't believe we have been working on it for 18 years now LOL
@@knight0fdragon i recognize that nickname from SFC heheh. Best regards
Great stuff. I love this positive angle on user generated content!
Apart from when he calls a lot of them stupid and bad right at the end. These guys show a lot of negativity towards things they dont like.
@Attack of the Pixels well , you also have to remember that emulation is technically illegal .
No one is raiding your house over it but it's still true .
Some of the fun for me with retrogaming is putting fan relocalizations on the JP version of carts, since they can be had pretty cheap. I also just like having a real cart instead a pirated thing or a software solution
@@nowtestify I think it was more "I'm not personally interested in this"
@Attack of the Pixels Selling an emulator for Playstation and Snes games? I seriously doubt Sony and Nintendo would let you do that here in the west. Especially since they have their own classic systems now. And is Project 64 for the N64? If so Nintendo would eat you alive for trying to sell something that plays N64 games.
I really can't believe what you're saying. Look at what happened with Soulja Boi or whatever his name was. There's no way this is all legal when even using Mario's sprite can get you in trouble.
Technically I don't think emulation or roms are illegal but any copyright holders to games and logos or emulators that could harm their business can be challenged legally in court, with certain companies being more heavy than others. eg Nintendo Mario roms never go unchecked,
Treasure of the Rudra and Bahamut Lagoon were my very first imports. I love those games.
This is awesome, thank you! It’s really useful to see a curated collection of the many, many rom hacks out there.
Another great episode. I especially loved the Working Designs section
Due to the of GBA not having a lightscreen, the SNES ports colors were altered, and some romhacks let you get the good colors
20XX Tournament Edition for Super Smash Brothers Melee has lots of quality of life as well as competitive changes that I love. Especially Universal Controller Fix (UCF) which levels the playing field for all GameCube controllers by making the "bad" controllers as good as the "good" ones.
That intro went crazy! Awesome stuff 🔥
I've needed a video like this for forever. Thank you so much!
Difficulty tampering is truly the darkest form of DRM
The DX Hacks are awesome, I'm a huge fan of em.
Also, I still wish for a Sakura Taisen Fan Translation!
This video came at the perfect time for me. You guys are awesome.
Excellent video! This opens my eyes to a lot of elements I never knew were (originally) there, and how much got changed for the North American releases I've played.
This was really cool! Amazing work as always. One hack that I do wish was mentioned was Sonic 3 Complete, which does a lot to smooth over some of the bumps and quirks of the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles package, like the use of the original MJ-collaborated tracks that were replaced in S&K, restoring the original Zone order so Flying Battery is now after Carnival Night, and even using the S&K intro to provide a cutscene transition after finishing the Sonic 3 half. It's glorious!
That's not a rom hack. That's a PC rebuild that uses assets from the rom. Rom hacks are playable on original hardware.
@@chigimonky You're thinking of Sonic 3 A.I.R.
How would they reproduce or obtain the Michael Jackson tracks that were never released? I know it's been mostly confirmed he composed music but if those tracks weren't destroyed surely only sega has access to them.
my highest respect to fans that do this kind of restoration
Hey hey! If you update this video, make a follow up, or even just for your own personal reference: Final Fantasy VI - Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition. The very best way to play SNES FF3. Ideal for the section of this video starting at 25:10.
Just dropped 90hrs playing a perfect stat walkthrough, and the hack largely allows you to do it in accordance to the GameFAQs guide. However, feel free to use the save point where you talk to Cid immediately before the Mag Roader battle.
[Coury] Thanks! I'll add it to the list for an eventual follow up video
you know how must of these feel?
Like Day-1 Patches of modern era games.
LOVED this video!
You always know it's going to be a great day when a new MLIG video drops! Some great roms to try out thanks guys!
I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention Castlevania 2: Simon's Redaction
Surprised to not see the Mother 3 localization on here. Also, a romhacker Kaze just made a way of using analog camera controls in Super Mario 64
Mother 3 isn't mentioned because we all already know about it.
Kaze Emanuar is truly the *MASTERMIND* of SM64 modding
@@wajiro9967 on his live stream I asked him if he knew a way to silence the camera sounds, and the dude immediately started spitting out the code that would do it, off the top of his head. He truly knows the game inside and out.
You guys do such great work, cheers!
People often get “better” and “different” confused. Meaning it’s better because it’s different and “new” to the person
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Japanese version has extra parallax scrolling on the clouds on the first level
Also the distorted water effects in Labyrinth Zone.
Joy.
The revision 1 version of the US cart has that too, plus some other effects and bug fixes
@@alexhardline2208 I remember those being in the PAL version just fine. How come they weren't in the US one?
@@sabin1981 they had to push it out before the SNES launched in North America.
Theres no way that fat sonic rom hack isnt some kind of fetish thing
Actually its the most compelling of the rom hacks he listed.
He’s the fattest thing alive, the fattest thing alive, the fattest thing alive!
It literally is. Made by a furry named GuyFuy
Well, it is a Sonic rom hack. ....
I mean the idea was just because of the funny idea of it, but I did partner with a friend who draws fat sonic stuff so there are ROOTS of it?
Seeing my hack pop up all over is always so crazy, although it seems that the guys didn't like it as much as the more QoL hacks :3
This video is incredibly thorough and informative. Thanks for all of your hard work! Playing old games can be a bit of a chore at times, and quality of life rom-hacks are a real blessing to retro gaming enthusiasts.
I really like your production quality great audio and videos!
On another note, I'm not sure why the A-button hack for EarthBound was necessary, given that you can already use the L button for auto-Check and auto-Talk. I suppose it's less cumbersome if you're emulating and using keyboard controls, but it's still kinda redundant. A more recommendable minor quality-of-life patch is the Run Button patch (which is also present in one version of the MaternalBound Omega hack).
Had the same question; there's another comment with more upvotes that asked the question and got a indepth explanation.
Hold up there's a run button mod for Earthbound???? That's the only thing I've ever wanted, source?
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 on the SNES have never received western releases and that's a shame because they're incredible. Luckily Project Naga and Project Exile fix that with fan translations allowing you to experience some of the best classic Fire Emblem has to offer.
Especially in Genealogy's case because that is a sweeping historical epic that goes through generations and plays so differently from normal FE.
Also on the DS front there is a fan translation of Fire Emblem 12, the only FE not released out of Japan after 7, that is worth checking out.
Hey Coury I'm so glad to see all the success you are having with UA-cam. I remember me telling you about how you'd be this huge UA-cam star and you laughing it off like you wasn't entirely sure. I look forward to the day your at 1M+. Also the quality is top notch.
Great episode, the enhancement chip rom hacks at the end are inspired!
Excelent video. I also tend to prefer these practical hacks, fixing problems, restoring all kinds of things, adding features...
Fan-generated content tends to be hit and miss, unfortunately. Let's face it, making a good game is not an easy task.
Most hacks focused on new content are really geared towards the truly hardcore fan, and the extreme-challenge junkie rathern than a well rounded experience. Longer and bigger total-conversion projects tend to be better, if only because it requires well motivated and disciplined people to get through the whole process and complete them, which naturally leads to a more serious and higher quality effort. Even with that, hacks with quality comparable to retail releases are still a small portion of the total output, and there's just too much stuff to keep up with and find the good ones buried under all the ...rest... ahem!
Personally, I have a soft spot for new levels on 5th generation 3D games, and also 6th, but not as much. The difficulty involved here filters mediocrity to a certain extent, but there's still a considerable ammount of forgettable and just unimpressive stuff when you look at it more objectively and not so much with fan-googles.
Still, the good ones do shine, indeed.
One of the problems with all this is the distribution and organization model for ROM dumps and patches and their transfer to diverse devices is really problematic and cumbersome, even if you know what you are doing, adding too much work to the process.
A smarter and more automated system is needed, but this goes into the realm of dreams and hopes at the present time. xD
Also, whoa, clear-sounding voices in Altered Beast? I'm offended.
Awesome video dude!!!
Thanks for the video. You covered a lot of games and it was very informative.
No, the biggest drawback for Super Mario Land DX remains that you can't easily at a glance see the difference between small and Super Mario. The small drops in framerate aren't really a big deal compared to both forms be essentially square.
It would be great if the sprites were made thinner.
I must be weird. I actually like dithering.
Ew.
There are games where dithering is very good. When it comes to gradients, it's very good. Silent Hill 1 looks bad without it.
Amazing video. Rom hacks and translations are like a minefield when you don't know what to look for or what you're doing. I'd love to see more videos like this. Subbed
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the hacks for Simon's Quest, making the cryptic translation a bit more clear, as well as the map hack, and Day-to-Night Transition hack that speeds up the pause during the Day-Night change. Those QoL hacks for Simon's Quest make the game a lot more palatable and gives the game the much needed breath of life for people to enjoy today.
My favourite is pokemon sacred gold and storm silver. It took the best pokemon game and made it even better.
Can’t wait to see a fully restored version of doom on snes being hacked to benefit the st018 chip.
Would that make the game run better? Because that would be sick if so. I kind of love the SNES version of the soundtrack, so it's always a shame I can't enjoy the SNES game.
The ST018 maybe the most powerful SNES mapper chip but it was meant for A.I. only.
@@jamessmithandgarrettsmith3623 well that st018 chip was also planned for the later 32bit playstation addon after reconsidering about it between sony philips and nintendo,BUT eventually considered the production costs being waaay too high for a then aging console,so they sadly went for a cheaper producible N64 console.
So that meams that sto18 chip could be linked and programmed for things you want and thus not only for ai.
Love this showcase, it's great to see such love and attention go toward keeping older titles relevant while staying true to the originals.
Fantastic stuff. I love the variety you showed because I already was pretty familiar with rom hacking.
The Gameboy super Mario lands were my favorite and must gets tho
The Symphony of The Night English translation for the original Japanese PS1 disc is superb.
Plus Japanese Audio is the one to rule them all.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Castlevania II Simon's Question Redaction
Some of the photography that you guys are doing is just phenomenal! That zoom into the GameBoy color that pops over to a retroarch LCD filter is flawless. I won't be trying that Gradius hack any time soon though, the slowdown was vital to dodging those bubbles!
[Try4ce] Not a Retro Arch filter, that's a GBA Consolizer recording that Coury dressed up with an effect of his own. :)
@@mylifeingaming Wow, even better! The LCD filters on Retroarch are nice though, they even handle ghosting!
Back in the early 2000s, I ebay'd some Canadian dude to produce and mail me an English Final Fantasy 3 cart. It is one of my prized possessions.
BS Zelda should’ve got a mention, if it wasn’t for the community, we would never have played the official 16bit remaster of Zelda, let alone any Satellaview games.
Very nice and complete episode, good work. May you gonna like to know that's we had the saturn grandia translation on s16 working on, it's much better then ps1 version, also thanks to show some of my stuff, I want to you take a look on my sf2 remaster project on the future, keep going the good work!
I love your work, dude. So many Genesis games have new life because of you.
@@FinalManaTrigger oh thanks, nice that's someone enjoy it
Gabriel, he forgot to mention the audio hacks for sf2ce/ssf2 on the mega drive. it's like water turned to wine....
Tomba on the PSP in your intro got the nostalgic feeling going. I miss those games
I know you're over 100k subscribers, but YOU NEED MORE SUBSCRIBERS! This video is awesome and has so much stuff that I want to go check out, and your content is consistently of this quality.
Wait for it... wait for it.... There it is! Breath of Fire II Re-translation. You have my likes. :)
Talks about rpg fan translation
*Doesent bring up Mother 3*
I suppose at this point the Mother 3 fan translation is so prolific that including it would seem like stating the obvious.
Mother 3 translation is far from being some overlooked rom hack. I didn't miss it because everyone pretty much knows about it already.
Great video Coury, this is very useful!
Great video as usual!
