    There's a 2 player Romhack out there for Ducktales 2 for the NES that makes the 2nd player Darkwing Duck. Fantastic hack, was great to the play game co-OP, highly recommend

    •  3 роки тому +4

      There is also a romhack called ducktales 2 deluxe, from 2013, unfortunately every text is in russian, which makes the game even harder. I once had a japanese duck tales 2 on a famiclone, it was basically the same situation, we had to figure out everything on our own and it was still a great game that way.

    I wasn't expecting a Jackal 2 romhack. I particularly like the apparent nighttime setting with the land cast in a darker shade, only reverting back to the normal color to emphasize explosions. Sure it's just a simple color palette trick, but it's a great effect here and really sets the mood for the game.

    Mario 3Mix is great. So is the Castlevania II Translation plus map. I made a patch, not released, that fixes the title screen for Castlevania II to restore the original copyright instead of leading to a website.

      Obviously the only correct way to play them is to acquire the original cartridge, use a cartridge dumper to extract a ROM, apply the IPS to the dumped ROM, then create a reproduction cartridge using the patched ROM and play it on original hardware.
      Or just download a ROM from the Internet, patch it, and play it on an emulator. One of the two.

    • @remakeyourself
      @remakeyourself 3 роки тому +4

      @@Dimensiom I've always wondered why ROM hacks almost always exclusively require you to patch it yourself. I haven't really looked into how to do that - I tried for a little it when Super Mario 64 Land came out, but my dumbass couldn't figure it out.
      I'm guessing it's because posting a fully-patched version is essentially the same as hosting a copyrighted ROM?

    Surprised you didn't mention some of the Tecmo Super Bowl rom hacks. They allowed for 4-3 defenses instead of all 3-4. Many allowed you to change your playbook in game, there is halftime stat tracking, updated rosters and teams obviously, and a juice mode to make it tough right out the gate for a greater challenge.

    I've played nearly every single Metroid 1 hack (most of them are quite bad). Here's what I recommend beyond Rogue Dawn:
    - Metroid X (1999) -- It's the first hack of Metroid, but it's rather solidly designed and polished for something of its vintage.
    - Metroid Deluxe (2002) -- The second best early Metroid hack. The author recently released an updated version with a pause map, so you might prefer this one.
    - Metroid Incursion (2014) - This hack was made by the guy who would go on to make Rogue Dawn. It has a weird modern-ish city theme. It's not as ambitious, but still rather polished.
    A couple others I recommend with some caveats are Metroid Genocide (the early game is a bit slow), Over the Moon (Tourian is no fun), Mission 187 (some advanced tech is required IIRC).
    I would also recommend Samus vs. Karid-X (which is a contest hack that you can beat in 20 to 30 minutes), but it would be unethical for me to recommend my own hack so I won't.
    You can find all of these hacks at metroidconstruction.com

    I think the biggest issue with a lot of rom hacks/custom campaigns etc is that they are, obviously, made by people who really love the game, and have played it so much, and mastered its mechanics and know all its quirks, and they want something new. And so what they think is a "reasonable challenge" is typically far more difficult than what an average player would consider reasonable. A player who played the game, liked it, and then wants to play a mod will more often than not be in for a rough time, unless the modder aware of that difficulty gap and willing to accommodate it.

    It isn't a rom hack but I wonder if you have played Simon's Quest Rebitten? Ed Findlay completely redid Simon's Quest so there are now boss battles in the mansions where you get Dracula's parts and at the end, the castle is actually parts of Dracula's castle from the original Castlevania and Castlevania III. It is free to download and it is AWESOME. I loved the original Simon's Quest but this game is by far more superior. I actually enjoy it more than Castlevania IV. You need to check it out. The Guru's patch doesn't really "fix" translation, it chooses to prioritize gameplay and quality of life over preserving the original text and theme. Notice the theater theme is greatly downplayed, everyone is helpful, and that actually loses a lot of the context of the story. Bisqwit's patch is meant to actually retranslate the mod into several languages, including Finnish which is his native language, with some other interesting quality of life changes. But also note that the Guru did his patch first, way back in the day, while Bisqwit is still working on his, and offers several ways to patch the game into boards Castlevania 2 wasn't actually made for.

I'll take a look to Castlevania hacked games you mentioned in your videos, they look quite nice, thanks a lot, I always enjoy your videos !

    Rockman 4 Minus Infinity is probably the best Nes rom hack I've seen so far, doing things I didn't think were possible. Such as using enemies, bosses and obstacles from Megaman 1-8, bosses with completely new attack patterns, and many more surprises.

    I do not do romhacks often but I may have to look into Holy Relics.
    I am somewhat surprised that you did not touch on Final Fantasy Restored. It is not an overhaul like Ultra Champion Edition but is a very well-made restoration patch that fixes a lot of the original game's bugs (TMPR actually works); most importantly, it allows character names to have more than four letters.

    Great work on this video, Snesdrunk. A few friendly suggestions if you do another video: Rockman 2: No Constancy, Rockman 2 Dash (does Mega Man 2 in the style of Mega Man 1), Tetris Music Randomizer (Tengen version, switches music each level), Mega Man Hyperion 3 (polished reimagining of Mega Man 3), Zelda 2 Winter Solstice (a little hard but still worth it using save states...the atmosphere is top notch and it feels like a new Zelda 2 game), and ...probably a million others but I guess everyone is suggesting some so I'll keep it simple.

    Holy Relics is a great Castlevania hack. You do mention it but I am just giving an additional endorsement. It's really good, not too hard but still tough and as a plus it uses music from all sorts of Castlevania games.

  • @pungisotu
    @pungisotu 3 роки тому +4

    Castlevania - Chorus of Mysteries is a great hack. Holy Relics too. Blood Moon is pretty good. I’d say CoM is actually harder. BM might have slightly different whip machines but once you master it you’ll find the game easier. You get a lot more power ups. Micah less penalty for hearts when dying and you keep your weapon after death too, if men worry serves.

    I also recommend "Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3" for NES by vasyanchichek (search on youtube). It's a romhack for a bootleg Mortal Kombat 3 for Famicom (which in turn was a romhack for Shin Samurai Spirits 2: Haohmaru Jigokuhen) . The amount of work invested into this hack is amazing - it's a complete game. I wish we had that UMK3 on NES in 90s..

    Not a rom hack. but translation...but I'd recommend Adventure Island 4 for the NES...it never came to the US, and it's an early look at the Metroidvania genre, and expanded on what CB 2 did but with a hudson twist.

    It's funny, I have heard of and/or played through most popular romhacks for SNES, Genesis, and N64, but I really have never even heard of all the NES romhacks you mentioned and never really gave much thought to NES hacks in general. Thanks so much for bringing these to my attention!

      Really? It was an overpowered mess, and was, in my opinion, pretty lazy. It was just a mix of the ice flower and the shell from New Super Mario Bros. It also suffers from only being in New Super Mario Bros Wii, the worst game in the NSMB series.
