My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
Honestly thank GOD channels like you guys exist. UA-cam "gaming" channels have become near garbage with no passion or care behind them. Thank you for staying true ❤️
I mean, this may as well be a TV channel, the quality is the same of a TV show... and man i'd be happy if this channel was an actual TV Show, it'd be the only TV show i'd regularly watch.
agreed. This channel rules!
wait really?? What about Nathenial Bandy, I think he's a great you tuber
SCOTT THE WOZ IS AWESOME
Antdude. Caddicarus, AVGN, want to know your location
i remember when DS flashcarts became a thing and i begged my parents to buy me one, not for games, but because it was the cheapest way to get an ebook reader at the time, I read a lot of pirated novels on my ds light back in the day
For some reason, I find this story crazy wholesome.
@@blueslime1980 WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!
@@blueslime1980 get out. you are not welcome here.
@@gamingnubs7628 yo what did he say bro he deleted his comment
@@jimmyhopkins1 i honestly cant remember. Probably something racist or offending.
FYI, you don't need to _hold_ left and B during the boot screen to display GBC games in B/W. A brief press will do.
just make sure the logo changes color
I’ve actually become partial to UP+B (brown) for original GB games. It’s far easier on the eyes than the stark black and white, especially on a backlit screen.
I always liked the pastel one when you press down, and the red and yellow one when you press down and A
Basically any of them that all used the same colors for background and sprites
I would love a mini episode going over the pros and cons of the Everdrive GBA X5 and the EZ Flash Omega.
Glad this got released before you leave for Japan. Have a great trip.
Ok
When will they make a Tiger Electronics flash cart? Carrying all those were much worse than a stack of Game Boy games.
and make a game genie too
They already have game genie support.
Who in their right mind would ever want to go back to those?
So you only have to go to the junkyard once
I don't think they can because of the lcd
22:22 from what I can recall, Stealth's Sonic Genesis for GBA only has Green Hill Zone and an incomplete Labyrinth Zone though
Good to see I'm not the only one with an original R4 card, since my smart phone died a couple weeks ago I've gone back to my DS Lite for playing games on the go and surprisingly my old R4 still boots up like a charm!
how do you talk to people without a phone?
Great job on the video as usual.
I have most of the EDs, but as far as the GBA is concerned I have to admit I much prefer the EZ-Flash Omega. I have been using an EZ-Flash II Powerstar 1Gb cart since 2004, and recently dug it out of storage and it still works perfectly! Even the SRAM battery, which I was afraid had gone into a deep discharge actually works. So they make quality products.
Anyway, the new Omega is only around $50 and has more features than the $130 E-GB x7.
It does save states, and has a better RTC implementation, where as it can keep track of multiple games without a work around. It also doesn't require a battery for saves as they are written directly to the SDcard.
But far and away the best feature of the Omega is its form factor. It's the exact size of a standard GBA cart. Not only that, but it comes with a DS Lite Slot 2 shell which you can transfer the Omega PCB into to have it flush with the DS Lite slot. They managed to shrink it down that much!
I'm sure Krikzz will take all of this into consideration when making a revised version of the GBA ED. Until then, my money is on the Omega.
could you make that sound less than an ad, the everdrive does save to sd card
@@twist3d537 He said that 7months before you commented (9 months ago now) it was probably fixed since then like he said in his comment
So EZ-flash OMEGA is better?
Preoccupiedude it seems to have the same features as the ED if not more, at a much lower price point. Have you gotten one yet? If so, which one and how do you like it?
@Wayne WolfingHawk The newer versions of the EZ flash seem to have good packaging and all of the gb x7 at a lower price point. There didn’t seem to be a need for the gb x7 since I have a gba sp. I got the EZ-flash, there’s no issues with it booting up, I’m currently waiting if the micro sd card reader to get some games on it though.
EZ-FLASH IV OMEGA (For the Game Boy Advance)
But it also emulate Game Boy, game Boy Color and NES.
Good capabilities for around 40 $
And it does save states
It does have higher battery drain, and is a bit less reliable, with you needing to patch roms before uploading them
@@bananamustard1151they updated it to not need that anymore.
@haloharry97 what updates?
I know this original comment is 2 years old...
But FYI, 2 years later, Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation on an EZ Flash Omega is still kinda janky. Original Game Boy games are totally fine and playable, but there's still some jittering and stuttering going on. Just playing Super Mario Land, you can see the background stuttering as you run to the right. Load up Super Mario Land 2, and you'll notice slowdown, especially in the Lego Levels (Mind you the original cart has some slowdown, but it's actually worse through the EZ Flash Omega).
Meanwhile, Game Boy Color games, you might as well just forget about. Tried to play Zelda Link's Awakening DX and early on, Link just turned invisible and I couldn't continue. Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel just crashes in level 3. A few games I've tried have been ok, but a majority of them are janky. And to top it all off, saving your game on GBC is weirdly unreliable. Sometimes it works, usually it doesn't. Sometimes you can get games to save by saving, opening the emulator menu, waiting a good 20 seconds or so, and THEN exiting. But even then sometimes it doesn't work anyway.
Saying all that, NES (and if you get a custom firmware, Game Gear and Master System) runs just fine. I dunno why Game Boy and Game Boy Color specifically give the GBA a hard time, when the other 3 consoles emulate fine. But, it is what it is.
Your best bet is to ignore the GB/GBC emulation on an Omega, and just buy an EZ Flash Junior. Sure, you're spending another $50 for another flash cart, but the GB/GBC games on a Junior all run natively. Meaning everything works exactly as it would on real carts.
___
Gotta say though, being able to play Game Gear games on my GBA, at full speed and full resolution, is fucking bananas. Like, if you're ok using a custom update for the Omega, the fact that you can play every GBA and Game Gear game is worth the price alone.
Wow, the way save states are activated is super interesting.
It's genius. A nice simple button. Easy and intuitive. Definitely the work of a practical engineer.
Coury reppin' my hometown in this episode with that Milwaukee Brewing Co. shirt.
What a great way to start my morning. I love my everdrive for the N64, might wanna look at some portable options.
Also, you guys are so close to 100k subs! Well deserved!
Cody Hendrickson I will always love my Everdrive 64 v3. Worth every penny!
They SHOULD be close to 1M subs, IMHO. But they'll get there, I'm sure of it.
The funny thing is the micro controller in the flash cart is likely more powerful then the Gameboy itself
Not even two minutes in, first time on your channel, and I was compelled by the power of good taste at 01:35 to pause for a thumbs up! 👍🏼
YOU (sir,) GOT BOOST POWER
...and legit taste in handheld games.
I had the opportunity to stop by Stone Age Gamers store in Salem, OH last week while visiting family in the area. They have a great stock of retro consoles/games, and the staff was very friendly.
You have the best intro music. Its good in the start and the moment you hear the full tune it gets you in the mood for vintage
gaming.
Very nice use of Puyo music during the GBA segment.
I screamed when I heard it!
Wishing you the best of luck on getting 100k subs!! You helped me learn about vintage consoles and how they output video and I can’t thank you enough for that!
Another amazing video! I didn't have any interest in portable flash carts before this video and still am only mildly interested in actually owning one but I watched all the way through because the presentation and delivery of MLiG content is other-worldy. I truly appreciate all the information and entertainment you guys have created!
I want a GBA everdrive, I'll get one eventually!
As for the other handhelds, I'm fine with just emulating them on my PSP and/or getting the 3DS Virtual Console releases...
Are you doing the pvm geometry settings video
Great track choice when introducing the Game Gear! That Axe Battler track is one of the best chip tunes ever made. Oh, and one thing to note is that the Everdrive GG does NOT properly for Shining Force Sword of Hajya aka the game you showed off in the video, therefore you cannot save your game on it. I have spoken with Krikzz about this and he is not sure why this issue exists and doesn't have any plans to fix it. Just something to be aware of when buying. Luckily this is the only game that I have ran into this issue with.
Wow guys is one of the best episode so far, like the fact that you give quick game suggestions.
Fingers crossed for an updated GG Everdrive. I would love one.
The "Morality of Roms" is a recurrent topic of the Retro Scene. But i still have to hear some UA-camr talking about the morality of scalping
I think it's usually just a legal precaution so nintendo or whoever else won't sue them. A lot of people are afraid of that and Daniel Ibertson(slopes game room) made a top 10 dumbest scalpers video a while back that was pretty entertaining if you're in the mood for that sort of thing.
I think it's more about staving off righteous indignation from the peanut gallery.
So glad someone brought this up.
It's the ROMs that are illegal, not the emulators so anyone suggesting Everdrives as fine but emulation is not then they're gun is pointing at the wrong target.
The real issue that drove me to emulation was the scalping. Being further and further priced out of retro games was getting out of hand. Even common or popular games are getting ridiculous, yet no-one batters an eyelid. I guess that's down to the inflating value of collections though, so who's going to complain if they want to sell up now especially if they bought the bulk 20 years ago.
Pat the nes punk talks about this alot
Legal is not a synonym of moral
After my third Pokemon Red battery death I've become completely supportive of roms. Games deserve to be preserved in a playable state and companies are not currently offering these products in their original form anymore. So thanks to people like krikzz, analogue and the rom emulation community for allowing us to save gaming history.
Coury/ thank you so very much for this amazing episode. So well researched, scripted, shot, and edited. You guys do some of the best work on You Tube. I’m about to order a few every drive carts as from everything I know....they are the creme de la creme of their class. Now I know exactly what I want in order to fulfill my needs. I love original hardware and whenever possible I have to have not only the hardware but the original software as well. This way I can put all the games I own on one cart and also have the amazing fan translations and remakes. I just can’t wait to start playing!!
This was a video, that I was happy to see being made. I really like your videos as they are bringing me back into retro gaming. I also really like your new text boxes. I actually would like to see an editing live stream at one point, like the one Joe from GameSack did in January.
I still remember the days of the late 90s to mid, 00s , learning of the super game axe at a local import shop, getting one, to regret that decision later when I realized connecting nes games to it and playing them was an exercise in sitting still as to not break the connection, shortly after would discover flash cartridges for the gba which were where I got my first taste of nes titles being truly portable thanks to pocket nes. Then came the DS which further increased capabilities having options for a lot of different console emulations using devices such as the super card/m3 perfect/ m3 simply and m3 real. A good friend would later give me a hacked psp he had fixed up (judging by the condition it had been in with the door I assume it had been run over at some point) this was where I saw a small handheld device could perfectly recreate a lot of arcade hardware. Today with devices like the ps vita and 3ds there are a lot of options that give you portable options or even other handheld emulation devices ranging from cheap devices that barely work to pretty capable. That said the everdrives are worth while for these devices for people who demand accuracy without hiccups, but if you aren't that demanding and can deal with not every game running perfectly, the original hardware really only is going to get more expensive, be hard to maintain working and the everdrives while a quality product are an expensive initial investment.
I would love rgb episodes about the Atari 2600 and Dreamcast!
Hyperkin makes a Dreamcast to HDMI cable that the Dreamcast itself sees as VGA but your TV reads as HDMI. There is no filtering or scaling so the signal passes through without lag so long as your TV is set to Game Mode or otherwise has filtering and scaling turned off.
Glad to see you mention the fan game Bullet.
One subject I'd like a video on is Vast Fame, a GBC/GBA developer in China, who made some EXCELLENT games. Sure, they're all bootlegs, but a lot of them are fantastic, and some are pretty original. The fault is that they're in Chinese, but if you make a video, who knows, people might be more interested!
Heck, even a video on the GBC bootleg scene would be great, as it's not just Vast Fame who made the good stuff. You got Sintax, BBD, SKOB, other stuff. Yeah, there's still bad, but it's a lot of fun looking through this library. GBC might just be one of my favorite game libraries because of stuff like this.
The theme music for this channel is some of the best ever
I have a HOT TIP for saving with save state without messing up the sound or other glitches! Always save at the END of a stage, BEFORE ht enew stage loads! Or before going into an inn, or any othe rmajor load point/ . The major oad point wilusually reload from scratch and will not continue with the messed up sound. This trick works well on anything that saves states and glitches up alot of the time.
Thanks for the great review! I own Everdrives for the NES (N8), Genesis (X7), TurboGrafx 16, and N64 (v3.X) as well as a SD2SNES but I have held off on the Gameboy and GBA Everdrives. Those are next on my list and will take even high priority once I get my hands on Woozle's GBA Consolizer mod. I look forward to seeing your video on that once it's finalized.
Michael Baker I have the GB and GBA everdrive. After getting the GBA one I recommend that one. It plays gb, gbc, GBA, nes, famicom and game gear, master system
manichispanic999 Thanks for the recommendation!
i highly recommend you dont get the GBA everdrive, its not bad, but its way too expensive for what it is, the EZ omega is cheaper and does more stuff (such as emulating rumble for both drill dozer and DS games supporting the rumble pack)
You must be rich.
Buying all of those Everdrives was certainly expensive but they really are a great value. If I was rich then I'd buy all of the original cartridges instead of using Everdrives. I do still collect the original cartridges for some systems. I'm currently up to 113 NES carts and I plan to buy more in spite of the fact that I have an Everdrive N8. However, I will never spend hundreds of dollars on rare games like Little Samson, Bonk's Adventure (NES), or Panic Restaurant so the Everdrive is a great solution for playing these games on original hardware. I also love the save state feature which is, of course, not possible with original cartridges.
All I do is watch Classic Console and gaming videos when the wife and kids are asleep. This was a Great topic I havent seen before
Never knew about the select button menu. random & especially recently played will be great!
Hilarious! Loved the last photo of the kid in the advert. We were all there once right?
Thanks to a Black Friday sale knocking 30 bucks off the price, I was finally able to get the best version of the Game Boy Everdrive. I've been wanting to get one for a long time because it's one of my favorite consoles, crappy pea soup screen and all.
Holy crap, I was searching right now for videos of portable Evedrives and BAM. New video of My Life in Gaming. Great!
Great video guys! That DriveSort application is pretty awesome! Thanks for the heads-up!
I think everdrives are a great idea, like you said we couldn't have even imagined that was possible as kids back in the day. Very cool.
Yes, please do a video on all the different types of R4's so I know which one to buy!
underrated comment
If you only have a DS or DS Lite, I can understand. However, you might want to look into obtaining a DSi and just hacking it. I know that doing so doesn't allow for the use of cheats (at least I don't think it does) but you'll likely have an easier time finding a DSi than a DS era flash cart.
I got an r4 back in the day and it still works a treat. Love that thing.
I truly do love these videos, even if I already have the hardware I need.
My god, I'll never be tired of this intro music. Gets me everytime!
The sound effect that you used for putting in the Ever Drive cartdrige was the 'Shiny' sound effect from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire 😁
Are you guys going to look into DS flashcarts in another episode?
I think they will.
Krikzz is a genius, I have my N64 Everdrive for more than 4 years and 0 fails so far.
I myself have a everdrive for the gba. Love the fact that you can play gb,gbc, gba, nes, and sega master system all in one.
I love having a hacked 3DS - and you don't even need a $20 DS Flashcart anymore!
I can emulate every NES/SNES/(Super) GB/GBC/Genesis/MS/GG/etc.
The 3DS can obviously natively run 3DS games, but it also has the native hardware for all your GBA/DS ROMS too!
Seriously, getting a 3DS, spending an hour hacking it, and loading up a 64 GB micro SD card has been one of my favorite things to do.
1. the screen is really blurry when playing ds games
2. the dpad is in the most uncomfortable spot
3. it has online meaning you can get banned
12:18 MFW Donjon de Naheulbeuk..!!!
That's my childhood right there!!
(Well, more the transition period between childhood and adolescence, but you get the point!)
Almost 100k subscribers! You deserve more subs man :)
Keep up the good works
Another really great video, and one step closer to having watched everything from the best UA-cam channel out there. :)
2:40 that hits me hard and felt guilty.. i used to have a GBA and enjoy every single game i bought..
but when i got a psp and able to emulate games i lost the passion to play it..
I couldn't agree with you more about getting more into a physical copy of a game!
Good production. Good informative presentation. Definitely warrants the 24 minute run time. Liked/Subbed/Belled!
The lynx sd card is the most impressive flashcard system to me because it was technically supposed to be IMPOSSIBLE to have such multi rom cart for the lynx due technical limitations,BUT they just did it.
The NGPC everdrive is also something interesting to talk about.
You guys should do an episode on strange and rare CRT tvs 📺
I'm glad someone acknowledged Iridion II.
This is especially good if you really want to play a game for one of these, but it's not easily available in your country, or too expensive for your budget, or it's overly rare (like Shantae for GBC). Also helpful if you want to play a hack that changes the game a lot, or improves it (like patching a glitch or any problem the original had), or even just translations and homebrews. Definitely cool.
I feel like this works both as a convenient way to play all the games you want on original hardware in a practical compact way, or to complement your library, in case you have problems finding certain games or they're too expensive, as I mentioned before.
These can even be exclusively used only for hacks, translations and improvements, if you're the type that really only wants to play the games in their original cartridges if possible.
Love the use of Iridion II music.
Gameboy have a sleuth of flashcards available to them when compared to homeconsoles. The R4, DS flashdrive craze made it that picking your flashcard was quite interesting.
You should really look into the Ez Flash IV as a decent GBA flashcard. It has most of the features of the Everdrive while being less than half the price and a normal GBA cart size. It does load the ROMs much slower though.
12:17 Never tought I would see Le Donjon De Naheulbeuk outside of French countries.
True !
I watched your first everdrive video yesterday and now this comes! Haha
I hope Krikzzz will create more hardware as he did with wireless Mega Drive gamepad. Delivery of my Mega Everdrive X3 took only one day 'cause I live in neighbour region.
Fantastic episode. Still need to pick up an Everdrive GG for myself, although I suppose one thing holding me back is not having a modded Game Gear for TV-out. I need to look into that..
@2:48 - nailed it.
A new MLiG video! Time to make a coffee.
everytime I hear this intro music I get goosebumps and playing on the real console is the only way imo. Oh yeah, spending time on physical games is much greater / longer than with games from the Steam Sale
Any video from you guys is an insta-like
Ive been waiting for this video. Great job
Yo, that "Bullet" game looks dope.
I particularly like the up pallete for dmg games. That game watch gallery game took quite longer to load for me on my Gb Everdrive x3 as well.
The end of this video is me. Yes. I sometimes carry around that much video game shit lol.
Yes! more MLIG!
Great video like always. Time to put an annotation on the Super Scope 3D comment, lol. BTW, I am a huge Everdrive fan. One day, I will get the Neo Geo AES SD cart for roughly $600 as well. I mostly enjoy the one for my Turbo Duo.
Wisconsinite here, Thumbs up for the Milwaukee Brewing Co shirt.
I'm excited to get an EverDrive-GBA X5 Mini soon. It's the same form factor as regular GBA games
God damn did that Shining Force Sword of Hajya music hit me right in the nostalgia. My Game Gear's screen and AC port are both dead so I need to figure out a solution for that thing.
Awesome! I've been looking forward to this one! I hope the Wii episode is soon.
16:47 Astroboy for GBA! what a great soundtrack!
so yeah that refresh for the everdrive gg welcomes x7! :D
To give insight on a non-Everdrive cart, the EZ Flash Omega has been doing wonders for me. Real time clock support, super-fast ROM loading, even for 32M ROMs like Mother 3's English patch, native Goomba emulator for easy GB(C) ROM loading, and so forth. It ran me $65 after shipping on RetroModding.
The only downside I noticed is that it causes my backlit-modded GBA's power LED to go a bit wonky when running the cart, flickering between green and a dim red whenever it was being used. I think this is due to stuff relating to voltage, but I can't tell if it's an individual case as it could also be caused by the GBA's voltage knob position when the person who modded my system was working on it. If any other EZ Flash Omega owners are out there, can you let me know if you have the same issue?
As for a game recommendation, I want to throw out 2 hidden gems:
*Metalgun Slinger*: It's a weird run and gun title only released in Japan that also incorporates some combo tech and acrobatics into its gameplay. The language barrier is small so give it a spin.
*Summon Night: Swordcraft Story*: a quirky JRPG that has an action battle system rather than anything turn based. The writing is really good and the entire game is just a charming romp.
Oh... The BGM at the beginning of the video is from Iridion II. I had that as a kid, but damn it was hard.
I'm surprised you didn't show the Six Golden Coins DX, or Pokemon Colorful Red/Blue romhacks!
Such an unrated channel! This should have way more views
The ez flash line of carts is what I prefer for GBA devices. And it has emulation for backwards compatibility
Another excellent video, Coury! I love Everdrives, but I don't own any for portable systems. More things to spend all my money on :P
Huge fan of Everdrives. I got the GB one before he did the X7 version. Wish I’d have known, I would like to have the RTC to play one of the GBC Pokemon games
I remember using all those old emulator like goomba on my days of Ezflash 2 and 4. Good times.
As I have become older and I have had less free time I have become less interested in game piracy, so I typically buy a game unless it is an old vintage title without any easy and inexpensive means of legal acquisition. Nonetheless, I do appreciate being able to condense my physical game collection down to a single storage unit which is why my entire Gamecube, Wii and Wii U library are ripped from the discs that I bought to hard storage and why I have in the past used flash-based cartridges for handheld systems.
"Gotta' play em' all, Everdrives!"
Mother 3 english translation? Proud to have thought "already played that"
Amazing video as always, also you guys should take a look at the game Aggelos, quite the Wonder Boy in Monster World type game with really good controls and good sprite work.
Game Gear is amazing with the modified screen. I would like to buy one too. Modified screen and next to it with everdrive cartridge.
Are you guys really listening to Donjon de Naheulbeuk at 12:18 or is it footage from another video? It is a very popular audio series in France 😂
Someone's a fan of Fire Emblem 7, what with displaying the Gameboy Advance SP above the box art and showing the cart sizes next to FE and even using the Missed sound effect from the game.
