My Life in Gaming makes documentaries, deep dives into retro console hardware, and more.
UPDATE: Raphnet now has Gamecube Controller to N64 with built in memory pack.
Nice!
Nice, no more worrying about losing save data because of batteries
Just a quick note on this episode: We actually had a section in this episode about the Retro Receiver from 8bitdo that allows you to use bluetooth controllers on your NES. Since that would have made this episode nearly 40 minutes, which lets face it -- is way too long for a video about controller adapters. It's also fairly new product that people might be interested in watching a video about we decided to split that segment into its own episode which we'll release next week.
I don't get the obsession with wireless controllers. Batteries die and you need a cord to charge them anyway. I wish all modern consoles would have corded controller options.
They have :P you just plug the usb cable and bang wired! I personally like wireless controllers simply because prevent people around my house from trip over the cord, another great advantage it's the fact that you don't need to replace the controller if the cable is broken.
But i do think wired controllers do still have their place on the market, specially for competitive gaming (fighting games ect)
I would love a segment on the 8bitdo controllers I have 2 for my tablet for retro emulation gaming. great episode btw
Likewise - also it means you don't have to replace the controller if your pet(s) chew on the cables.
The more the merrier. Your in-depth reviews are great to binge.
I bought one of the Raphnet adapters to use a SNES controller with my Gamecube a few years ago. Much, MUCH cheaper that the Hori Gameboy Player controller. Plus, playing GBA games on a TV with a Super Nintendo controller feels sooooo right. It's like the last 20 years never happened.
I just ordered this adapter yesterday for Gameboy on the Cube! Glad to hear it's working well for you!
gammaphonic does it work with Wii homebrew emulator?
I never knew the hori controller was pricey, I bought it for $3 a few years back.
There's only 1 thing about the Snes controller that I don't think is good for playing His games: The shoulder buttons are SMALL! Otherwise, I would love to own a Raphnet adapter.
@@Charlie97L i have a question does the gamecube controller's rumble work on n64 games
I don't see anyone else below mentioning it, so thought I would. The Xbox 360's Play & Charge kit does not allow actually using the controller as a wired one, it's literally just for power.
We've Had a Pack'n Play cord covered in tape because the metal and wires were exposed for almost a decade now and it still works with no battery attached. 👍🏿
Great vid and thanks for the button configs they work really well!
gotta love that UltraHDMI-captured N64 footage :)
Nintendo did release a SNES pad for the wiimote, It was a Club Nintendo exclusive and cost 6000 star points
jse07 you mean pro controller?
Now you can just use the snes mini controller as the game pad
@Golden Z 25 lol i said that but didn't see you wrote that
@KazTheMovieCollector Huh weird. The Wii classic controller should work on the NES classic. I cant say I've actually tested it myself but i swear i did at least use a snes controller on the nes classic at some point.
@@Yipper64 how would you even connect a snes controller to the snes classic, its not the same connector
Be careful hot swapping the Undamned encoders. I crossed the 5V pin when doing so and fried the power supply on my supergun setup. I love the decoder. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Yes! Raphnet are great, they do so many cables. Good to have some so you can use your favourite arcade sticks on multiple consoles.
Dude, I'm already loving this video for the GC to N64 adapter, I was considering getting a replacement stick but screw that, thanks guys!
I got the Raphnet GameCube To N64 Controller Adapter for Christmas back in 2017. This has been my primary way to play Nintendo 64 games.
Wow I wish I had picked up Mischief Makers from a local shop when I had the chance now, it looks really interesting.
I got a bunch of Tototek converters, they work great on my Famicom, SNES, Genesis when using my PS2 arcade stick.
sega saturn pad is my go to pad for retro games and fighters
Agreed... I was watching this, hoping to find that some low-profile seller had an adaptor for play on a PS2 or original XBox. With an extended hard drive and CoinOps on an XBox, all it's waiting for is a decent D-pad and six-button layout! :-/
+Ruaidhri O'Baoill your right there's no cheap and easy way to do that I have thought about doing that recently, ps2 to xbox adapters were readily available so I ended up using a wireless ps2 controller for coinops with some success but I really want to use my Saturn controller. I think the only way to do it is by daisy chaining a couple of adapters (and I worry about the response times) I have a Saturn to dreamcast adapter so all I need is a dreamcast to xbox adapter and I can hopefully get this glorious 6 button controller working with some quality arcade games 😊
Look up one of Adam Koralik's videos. He got a Dreamcast -> Xbox set-up working (I think he ended up daisy chaining through a PS2 adapter), though the adapters he used are rather expensive. Also, you might see with Raphnet if there would be some way to get his Saturn -> USB to work with the original Xbox. From my understanding, it's controller port is just a modified version of USB, so it might be able to.
+Lakster37 thank you. I have watched quite a few of Adams uploads but hadn't seen the one you mentioned so I'll have a look. I had wondered that myself because I recently bought a mayflash Saturn to usb adapter (for gpd xd) and I remember you could make an adapter to use usb drives on the original xbox I just wasn't sure it would work with controllers. If this works it would be so freaking cool
The Saturn controllers are all wonderful. Ultimately the Snes school of button placement became the standard but the 2nd gen Saturn pad - with its smooth as butter ergonomics, ultra low weight, 6 main face buttons AND Snes-type shoulder buttons - was always my favourite. The 'claw technique' gets a bad rap but many technical action games would have to be dumbed down to be playable on today's default controllers. Alien Soldier on a SNES or PS1 pad? Good luck trying to exert half as much control finesse without three lined-up face buttons resting naturally under three perfectly aligned finger tips. A claw hander will wipe the floor with you any day.
I actually just bought an 8bitdo Adapter specifically to use the 8bitdo SNES30, a Bluetooth replica of the SNES controller, on my Wii U. It says the adapter is for the NES Classic Edition, but as far as I'm aware, it uses the Classic Controller plug, meaning it should most likely work perfectly.
Holy crap, I'm gonna have to pick up that Gamecube to N64 controller adapter. The GC controller is one of the best ever made IMO, and the much improved stoutness of the stick alone would fix a lot of issues I have going back to some N64 titles these days. Great video, guys, I think it will do well!
Dome-Candy Games The GameCube controller was a great update of the N64's controller. Apart from the tiny, tiny d-pad and the lack of left shoulder shoulder pad it was near to perfection.
Makes me feel like a seriously badass gamer knowing I've already purchased and used most of these adapters. Go Raphnet!
Picked up some SNES -> Gamecube adapters from Raphnet a few months ago for my Wii. They've worked like a charm!
WillWorkForRic3 please respond, I want to order one does it work with homebrew emulator? Snes
I was going to start buying n64 games and play them on my old grey 64 and I was looking at the gamecube to n64 adapter just yesterday and you guys include it in a new video. Man, I love you guys :)
Thank you! Things I liked:
-Sweet Dino/Skateboard T-Shirt
-The intro graphic for the genesis games section!
-The sound effects in the first 'button-mapping' animation in the genesis games section
-The short Superman 64 clip at the end. LOL!
Thanks guys!!!!! This was really cool. I normally wouldn't care about this but you guys made it interesting and started me thinking about ways this could be useful for me.
I need one of those gamecube controller adapters just to fix the damn inverted controls. Thanks for the awesome video!
That white PS3 😍
The first adapter for GC to N64 feels like a treasure to me.
Mario Party 1 destroyed enough gamepads in the past, only downside is really that one can't save 3rd party games because of its needs for memory cards OR transfer game data to Pokémon Stadium and the Mario sports titles.
The video output from those games is gorgeous. The Framemeister setup is really paying off!
Just got my Raphnet Gamecube to N64 adapter and appreciated your mappings. Worked great for GoldenEye. Thank you.
If i remember correctly the reason for Wii U Pro Controller and the Play and charge Xbox 360 kit not working with the usb adapter is simply cause the usb connections for thoose 2 is charging only and not giving any kind of data connection to the console
I can't speak for 360 play and charge, but that's definitely right for Wii U Pro. It's connection is only through bluetooth, and USB is just for charging.
that's why I used a dualshock 3 controller instead of my wireless 360 controllers because it worked over usb
been using this same adapter for Smash64 for a long time. Glad to see it featured.
Great episode guys! Just may be worth mentioning that the RaphNet adapter works with the wavebird. I've been using it this way for a few months as I was looking for a decent wireless N64 solution.
Gamecube to N64. I can imagine how much better movements can feel when speedrunning F-Zero X. I gotta give it a go. It alreay has some of the best controls of all time in my opinion. It's nice to hear you can move the buttons around, the default Gamecube Z would be a pain.
You forgot about the fact that the 6-Button controller has a Mode Button, which can be used as a select button
The mode button is not really an input button though. It was purely there to switch the 6-button controller into 3-button mode for certain games that were incompatible with it. (Like Forgotten Worlds and Golden Axe II.) I don't imagine the Genesis adapter would even register that button press.
Lost Vikings used it to access the inventory, Fatal Fury 2 used it for taunt, and so did Eternal Champions Sega CD.
That game in the end looks super fun!
Huh, I was just thinking about if there was a Gamecube to N64 adapter last night, too.
I think I'm going to get one of those down the road to fill up my empty space for a fourth controller. And just for me to play around with now that I'm getting an UltraHDMI mod. Thanks guys! You always seem to pull up some interesting topics.
12:20 yes they were, just many many years later (even after the release of this video) and only a few of them. The NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition controllers use the same plug as Wii remotes and are compatible with Virtual Console.
Great video guys!! Thank you for showing us these adapters. I had no idea this stuff was even being done. I now have some options for using the controllers I want to use instead of being stuck with the default system controllers. :)
I think 12:15 was the coolest and sexiest part and not just because I provided that image but because it contains everything I could have done with back when I used to play VC games on the Wii. Thanks for the credit at the end by the way. Genuinely didn't expect that.
Oh alright, the whole episode is cool and sexy.
Really nicely edited video, I'm liking both the fluent 60fps iconography and contextual sound effects. Great information too, I own an older version of the raphnet GC to N64 adapter (which admittedly I should really use more). Always great to see Goemon make a sneaky cameo as well.
Just thought I'd drop back in after a year and say that the Raphnet GCN to N64 adapter is still an amazing device. I've already bought 4 and with the new V3 release (Built in mempak support) I can safely say that it still holds up later after a year of use. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an N64 controller alternative!
I had an issue with the first run in the black heat shrink. One of the wires started shorting out. I finally figured out how to dissolve hot glue and take the thing apart to resolder it. Working fine again for now.
It should be noted that Nintendo of Japan did release a SNES/SF style classic controller to Japanese Club Nintendo members back in 2008.
and the nes mini comes with a nes style classic controller
Mantis128 important to note that we now have a much easier to get version with the snes classic edition, and we got that nes controller with the nes classic which is great
Mantis128 also there is a mayflash(?) Hardware adapter that can be used to mod n64 controllers (along with some other classic controllers) to have a wiimote hookup, never tried them but you can find a handy tutorial for modding the controllers here on youtube, it may be worth a shot just to have wiimote ready controllers for the VC
I was more hyped for this video than anything else this week :P
I missed that excellent theme you have. Good to see it back on my subscriptions page.
Love this channel one of the best on the tube
Top quality video, as always!
12:20 The SNES styled classic controllers were made available as Club Nintendo rewards. Surely that pre-dated this episode by a few years.
Just purchased a GameCube to n64 adapter I can't wait :)
I've had the Wii remote to N64 adapter from Raphnet for a while now and it works great for the N64 games on virtual console. There are a handful of default button mappings which seem to work for all available games. If they ever bring out GC games for virtual console and don't support the smash GC adapter for Wii U, I'll get the GC adapter from Raphnet too.
I love this channel!
you're first
+Roughman123 yup lol.
This was very helpful episode of the show! I look forward to more reviews on controller adapters, you guys always are thorough and professional with your work.
Loved this episode. I should buy some of those GC to N64 right away!
I thought you would look at more than a couple adapters. I got a saturn to dreamcast adapter, this is just an ad for raphnet. Thanks for nuthin old dude.
17:28 Coury: "The superior version of the game" Me: "The arcade version" Coury: "With a superior controller" Me: "An arcade stick"
I use a Brook PS3/PS4 to PS2 adapter and it works fantastic. Love using the Dualshock 4 on my ps2 for shooting games and racing games. I also use a original Xbox to PS2 adapter when playing on my original Xbox. The Brook adapter I mentioned above also works with Xbox adapter so I can use my PS4 controller on my original Xbox!!! It's awesome to play my childhood games with a wireless controller (ds4) that I love
You guys are great. I'll watch anything you put out.
amen
Not sure why it took me so long to find this channel, but I love it. Keep up the good work.
Man, an episode on Dreamcast controller adapters would be so helpful for me right now... Maybe in the future? Please?
There is one out there that will let you hook up a PS2 controller to it. Have a look on ebay.
That's so wild, maybe cause it was my first real system growing up that I owned, but I am of the opposite opinion. I love the N64 controller. Yes, the D-Pad is situated in such a way that you have to choose between the joystick and it when holding it, but I actually can't even think of a game off the top of my head that required you to use both. And that suited me just fine, because the joystick was perfect for just about all of the games you would want to play. I've heard more people prefer the GameCube controller, something that I will never understand, but to each their own I guess!
You guys are awesome, I've been watching your whole library since I'Ve discovered your channel. Keep it up and major thanks for all the work.
For the Mega Drive to GameCube raphnet adapter, the "Mode" button is mapped to the "Z" button. It's funny that button wasn't talked about in the video, because I would have thought the Mega Drive to Wii arphnet adapter would have had the "Mode" button mapped to the "Select" button?

As usual, amazing.. You guys knock it out of the park..
I've been using the Raphnet N64 -> Gamecube adapter for a few weeks now and it's worked great, but with a minor hiccup. I've noticed I cannot be too far out of the line of sight with my Wavebird otherwise it starts to read the input incorrectly. This isn't a problem with the actual Gamecube or the adapter for the Wii u, but for whatever reason it exists with this adapter. The wired controllers of course work perfectly and I have no problem using them, but the convenience of a sophisticated wireless controller for the N64 is optimal.
Anyways great video as always. I'm glad you guys are getting these things out in the open so that people can get them and have great alternatives to the original controllers.
[Try4ce] Huh, I haven't had that problem when using my Wavebird, but you may have tried it for longer stretches than I have. This was actually the first time I'd used my Wavebird in probably 10 years. I stopped using it because I was getting interference of some kind, resulting in hiccups. It was really neat using it again, and I actually didn't have any problems this time.
@My Life in Gaming you guys are awesome, love the channel and the knowledge.
I'd like to say that the Raphnet N64 controller adapter is almost if not completely perfect in everything I've thrown at it. Everyone who reviews the Hori Pad Mini neglects to mention that it's pretty bad for shooting games as the stick is too sensitive to aim properly but with the raphnet adapter everything works like a charm in Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and any other games! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good alternative to the original controller who liked the GCN controller like I did!
Special thanks to MyLifeInGaming for first introducing me to the adapter and for making the N64 a whole new experience with this controller adapter! Great work guys!
It's nice seeing Shadow Dancer getting some love :)
Great list of options guys! I find buying various controllers for PC has been useful with emulation.
The super famicom/super nes controller works amazing with mario kart 8
I was just wondering the other day about adapters like this. Id be interested in see some more of these kinds of adapters
That Sega Genesis to Wiimote adapter will also work on the Nintendo Switch, PS3 and PS4 if you connect the Wiimote to a Mayflash Magic S Pro USB adapter.
I've got a 2-player ClassicController-to-USB adapter from Raphnet, and it's great. I'd definitely buy more of their products in the future. Both the software and hardware is great for the adapter.
I ordered 2 of their plugs that connect directly to the Wii GC ports to avoid lag. Aside from Sega, Atari and Retroarch games, the Wii Classic controller is the best controller to use for Nintendo's systems. But these Raphnet plugs are gonna make emulation feel like the real thing.
Awesome video, I didn't know about the neogeo adapter, it looks great and finally can use my fightpads with my consolized MVS. BTW, awesome 17bit tee, GalakZ is a great game
I remember seeing the first Playstation to PC USB converter back in 2001, and I bought it immediately. They weren't in widespread distribution, so I had to get them from some Hong Kong website. I have worn out, lost, or damaged a few over time, but I still like using them.
Also, there are so many barely used Dualshock controllers at a low price.
I might be off in wanting this, but I would love to see an adapter for the original Xbox that lets you use a 360, Xbox1, or even a PS4 controller on the original Xbox. For as solid as the S is, I really don't like the placement of the start/back, and B/W buttons on the side in contrast to the 360's use of bumpers.
[Coury] Oh yeah, I totally agree. I'd LOVE a Xbox 360 on original Xbox controller.
For what it's worth, there are adapters that let you use PS2 controllers on OG Xbox. I don't know if you're specifically looking for wireless, but if not, you should be good.
Everybody should really look into the multi console cthulu for virtually every major console and Brook converters for all the newer ones they are amazing
Backwards compatibility on the Xbox one has come a long way, check to see if your favorite games are on the list
OGX360 is what you're looking for. It allows use of 360 controllers on the OG xbox , and even other controllers like the ps4 or xbox one pad when using an 8bitdo wireless adapter. You can build your own or buy them prebuilt. github.com/Ryzee119/ogx360
Boy you guys go all out. Thanks for such quality work!
What do you guys think of the Wii U Pro Controller, just in general?
[Try4ce] I really like the Wii U Pro Controller. I wouldn't use it for 2D games much though, because of the Dpad location (which is OK, just not as good as other options). Though to be honest, when given the option to use the GamePad, I tend to do that. I enjoy the screen, and find it pretty much just as comfortable as the Pro Controller. The only issue with the GamePad is that sometimes it can feel like a longer reach from the face buttons to the right stick. I prefer sticks to be on the same level, like on Wii U and DualShocks, rather than the staggered sticks like on Xbox (which is OK, but I do prefer even sticks). Overall I really like the Pro Controller, but I personally don't feel like it's much better than the GamePad or anything (sacrificing the screen functionality is too much, I think!).
the new raphnet v3 adapter has controller pak support and Raphael from raphnet provides the support for his products (he's very responsive).
Gamecube controller on N64, YES! One of my favorite controllers on the system with one of my least favorite controller.
That PS2 controller to Gamecube adapter you have, would it work with that GameCube controller to N64 adapter? I'd love to play N64 games with a PS2 controller.
[Try4ce] I originally had a line about that in the script, but cut it out. Unfortunately, it does not work. Well, it doesn't work correctly. It caused my character to go off in some direction, and the rumble freaked out.
Superman 64 is bad with any controller lol
Lmao
Correct
To make it good you need to port it to ps1 and not cancel it
@@Vicy5Modapk I don't think that would have been a good port/version.
@@eddielockhart2072 they were adding improvements to the ps1 version when it was a thing so it could've been at least somewhat better
I got the 'SNES controller to Wiimote adapter' from Raphnet-tech and it is AMAZING!
It lets me not only use an SNES controller on my wiiU with any game that accepts the original wii pro controller, but it also lets you set the thumbpad to register as the left analog stick for games that otherwise wouldn't have let you do that. I can play the newest Smash Bros with the thumbpad and that's exactly what I bought it for. I know several people will call this sacrilege, but I hate it when games play in 2D but only allow you to use analog sticks, and Smash is one of those games for me. This adaptor fixed this and I couldn't be happier. Also it's pretty cool to be able to play nearly all my new/modern wiiU games with an SNES controller.
[Coury] Welp, you just sold me. I'm definitely getting one
[Try4ce] Coury's got me interested in looking into the other Raphnet adapters too... they seem to have a ton. I wasn't aware of them at all until Coury said I should try the GameCube to N64 one.
You forgot to say that raphnet also list his schematics in open-source license giving you the freedom to build one yourself. Even if you don't have a programmer for the IC (controller inside) you can buy a pre-programmed one from raphnet as well.
[Coury] Thats very true - we actually had a bit about that in there but ended up cutting it since the episode was getting so long as it was.
14:50 since I started watching your guys' stuff a few months ago, I've been all about playing my retro consoles on a big-ass CRT I got on Kajiji (Canadian Craig's list). Too bad I'd already transferred my Wii data to the Wii U by that point...
This was a cool episode! Very helpful with the information on Gamecube and Wii adapters. However the segment regarding the NEOGEO control options was useless to me.
So the Wavebird controller works on the GameCube to N64 adapter?
Nice
The raphnet snes-2-gamecube and classic-controller-to-gamecube adapters are a great alternative for people who don't have a hori pad. They also have a gamecube-2-classic-controller adaptor if you have a hori pad and wanted to lord it over people by using it on the snes classic.
The bumper triggers on the gamecube controller are the most comfortable I have ever used and I wish someone would make an n64 controller with gamecube L and R
I like gamecube controller on the Wii vc games. Most of them had their own custom mappings
I use a Performance Superpad (vintage 3rd party snes controller, best for the system imho) a snes to usb adapter, my latop, Virtual boy advance M, an hdmi to composite adapter, and a Sony Trinitron CRT to play GB, GBC and GB Advance games.
I actually really like the N64 controller
salty frogs ikr
Other than the analog stick wearing out, it's perfect.
Someone's probably already noted this, but if you want twin stick controls in Goldeneye and Perfect dark, just use two controllers.
No, really - it splits look/strafe/move between the two sticks, in a very 'modern' fashion, across the two controllers.
It works....really, *really* well.
Control styles 2.x, as I recall.
I do want an Arcade stick that I can use on my PS2, PS3 and DreamCast so I can use it to play Tekken, Soul Calibur, Dead Or Alive games and Capcom Fighting games.
I thought I was the only one that disliked the N64 controller so... It really did color my opinion of that console. Great video!
[Try4ce] You're not alone, because I feel like I'm the only one who does like it!
This video brings up a topic that I'm sure many of us have had, or shall I say...felt.
That is, how using a controller that wasn't originally in mind for use during the games development, tends to bug me big time.
Such as using a SNES controller on a Genesis, or reverse.
There is just something about having the matching feeling of a controller with that system...especially when it comes to more retro systems where games tended to be exclusive to that console.
I'm surprised that no one has made a video discussing this and going further into why people feel that way...minus nostalgia, even when the switched controller functions just fine in a technical sense.
I don't like playing sonic with the snes controller at all and I had a really hard time getting used to playing mario 64 with the gamecube controller but I prefer it now after having it a few years now. I can't play it any other way. I was so sick of striking out when it came to controllers and worn joysticks.
You guys make some really high quality content! Keep it up!
Oh, dear, something like the Undamned USB decoder for my Mega Drive would be super! While I have a PC I often boot up my Mega Drive for a quick Super Street Fighter II arcade run and I always wanted to use my usb arcade stick with it. I mean, these things are bulky and expensive enough as it is and vintage arcade sticks tend to be even more expensive and much more fragile. I already got a raphnet adapter to use my Mega Drive pads on the Gamecube and Wii since I own both and my wii still has the GC controller ports.
I love playing Wii U games with a GameCube controller via a Wii Remote plugin that lets me hook a GameCube controller into a Wiimote so it reads like a Wii Controller or whatever they're called.
Just picked up a brook DualShock adapter that lets you use a DS4 or DS3 on a PS2 or PSX. Make it nice and easy to use.
I bought an n64 controller adapter for GameCube slots and it functions the same way as the GameCube to n64 adapter however there wasn't an option for custom controls but if u hold a button while plugging it in, it will swap 2 of the c buttons to x and y, the adapter comes with a list of button maps when pressing a button while inserting the adapter
Your channel is fantastic! Congratulations!
Daisy Chaining adapters can have great results. Want to use a wireless PS3 or PS4 controller on your GameCube or Wii? Get a Gemini/Game Elements PS2 to Xbox/GameCube adapter, and plug a Brook PS3/PS4 to PS2 adapter into it, and voila! Works fantastic and there is, no noticeable lag, even with two adapters joined together. The sensitivity and precision of Sony's analog sticks always felt a tad better than Nintendo or Microsoft, to me.
Always hated the N64 controller and that's really what prevented me from buying one, but I may shell out now and get an N64 if I can use my GC controller for it.
In honest to goodness, I will never understand why people hate the N64 controller. People act like it’s super awkward but I argue it’s quite ergonomic
Have you guys (more likely: Coury) ever had an opportunity to try the MC Cthulhu PCB that allows you to add multi-console functionality to a controller/arcade stick? I purchased one a while ago to install in my 360 arcade stick, and I bought extra cables to allow me to connect to SNES/PS1/Saturn/DC/OG Xbox. I'm very happy with it so far.
