Diaz is literally the only Colombian player starting and performing at a bigger club than Pulisic or McKennie. As a TEAM Colombia are far superior and have been on an absolute tear beating teams that are easily better than them on paper like Brazil, but on paper they are actually pretty comparable to the USMNT. Watford? Genk? Krasnodar? Al Sadd? Not exactly household names for clubs. Robinson, Cardoso, Richards and Scally are all starters on solid mid-table top-5 league teams. Transfermarkt has the 27 player USMNT squad at a higher value ($347 million) compared to the 28 man Colombia squad ($287 million). So yeah, give Colombia their due, they are a great team and are playing incredible together, us fans are absolutely right to expect us to at least COMPETE with them and eek out an underdog win here and there against better teams like we used to do when we had a far less talented squad. We are fed up with seeing this Berhalter team try and force playing out of the back and get burned OVER AND OVER against good pressing teams that KNOW what we are going to do EVERY TIME! As another commentator said even Pep knows he has to play the long ball from time to time.

Following Saturday’s 5-1 result, the USMNT is 3-14-5 all-time against Colombia, with the team’s last win coming in a 3-0 victory on March 9, 2005 in Fullerton, Calif. That's 19 years! The team’s eight- match winless streak against Los Cafeteros is currently the second longest of any opponent after Brazil (11 matches).
The US cannot underestimate teams like Colombia that have been pumping out great football players for over 40 years. Colombia is ranked the third exporting country of players in the Americas (over 467) only below Brazil (first) and Argentina ( second). Uruguay is ranked 4th, and the US is 5th.

I saw Charlie's reaction to "Berhalter took some of the blame." and I'm completely with him! Berhalter's superpower is blame deflection.
Americans love a winner. Americans hate losers. But more than that... Americans will not tolerate being humiliated, or even just embarrassed. The USWNT is *never* subjected to our fans being outnumberd by the fans of other countries *in our own home* .
How many #11 Milan shirts does Christian Pulisic sell? And how many #10 USMNT shirts does he sell? Same for all the rest of our European players. My point is that we absolutely love our players and follow them fanatically at their clubs. Because they're winners. *And that is worth a boatload of money* . Why are so many US businessmen and coalitions buying European footie teams? Why are so many media companies paying huge money for the US tv rights? Why have European teams made a habit now of doing US tours in the summer? And why are both the Premier league and the Champions league proposing competitive matches in the US???
Because it's worth a boatload of money. The sport is growing in America faster than any other sport or in any part of the world. So why did Wrexham, a lower tier Welsh team, outdraw any USMNT match in this country in the last several years? Because Americans Do Not Trust the USMNT to Not Embarrass us.
The US soccer Federation is throwing hundreds of millions of dollars away because of their toxic insistence on keeping Greggg Berhalter as manager. Maybe... just maybe... if they get that shoved in their faces often enough... they might hire a manager that our players and our fans deserve.

I think the narrative that you’re not pushed in MLS might be a little outdated at this point. I disagree with Charlie on this one. 1) you are fighting for a spot week in and week out because now MLS has started to bring in South American players on a more consistent basis. You got Cremashi for example who was a lock down and all of a sudden, he’s fighting for that spot. 2) MLS teams are now very quick to bring in their USL players and send you to their spot if they feel you aren’t up to the task 3) and what I feel is most important, Europe has eyes on you. They are willing to buy you and so I want to be a starter and at the same time show you can cut it oversees. You also have more competition than before. Leagues Cup, Open Cup, Champions Cup. A little added pressure to perform with the whole MLS/Liga MX rivalry (looking at you Aiden morris 👀). I rather have that and someone playing up to 3 games a week in 3 different competitions than someone riding bench just focusing on league play.

    1) None of those starting 11 are afraid for their jobs and therefore coast. No one is pushing them from below. Look what happened when the subs came on.
    2) The expectations for the US national team are set way too low for the talent pool we have in this country. Berhalter keeps his job after the last World Cup? That was horrible And so predictable. It’s all the people above Berhalter that are the real problem. Reyna family, all the executives, MLS owners who won’t allow relegation or invest in more international players
    3) CONCACAF sucks, it’s down with Oceana in terms of regional competition. How can the US play more globally successful teams In meaningful games?
    4) US soccer development program is way behind other countries. Rich kids, pay to play, no national strategy to develop kids towards, etc.

It’s the same issues we’ve had since the beginning just compounded by the fact that he misprofiles players, doesn’t adjust his style to help maximize their skills, and doesn’t experiment with new players often enough. He basically dropped Johnny into a starting role having never started and the kid played pretty well under the circumstances. This is what we are under Greg and it isn’t going to change so it’s time to make a change

Tim Ream is 36 looks like 46, Richards always looked scared and can't string along passes to go forward, Robinson is shaky at times and lost focus the rest, if Joe Scally looks best in your backline, you have a problem. Midfield dudes, Cardoso, I'm not sure what he's doing in the 2nd half, but doesn't look like starting material to me, Reyna is overhyped, McKennie pretty much disappeared. The three players that should be starting in MF are Pullisic, Mussah, and Adams, McKennie could be a WB. They need to play something like a 4-4-2.

  • @chrishenderson1262
    @chrishenderson1262 Місяць тому

You guys just spent 10+ minutes trying to diagnose what should be a very simple problem. It's the rigidity of the system, mainly in the case of this game the insistence to play out of the back versus a skilled and intelligent team that was setting traps for any slight mistake (even to the extent of frequently using your GK who is notably bad at that aspect of the game).
It's not the number of games or minutes these guys are getting at their clubs. It's not the collective effort (or lack thereof). It's not the quality of opponents (because we also underwhelm against Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, T&T, etc).
What it is more than anything (and this bleeds into and compounds the factors listed above) is that GGG insists on using our team and specifically individuals in ways that don't accentuate their strengths. Even worse, he uses them in ways that expose their weaknesses.
Aside from the goal we scored, and a couple close chances (Balogun's shot saved off the line, Pulisic's header off the post), the most meaningful moment of the game that we should take something from was literally the first 30 seconds, right after we kicked off in the first half. It was "Route 1 Football". Long ball into a deep channel that leads to a throw-in near Colombia's defensive corner. That field position allows players like Gio to be close to Colombia's 18-yard box, where he can combine with teammates, eventually distributing to Balogun in an area where a half chance is created.
Imagine if we just gave a little freedom to the CBs and FBs to dump the ball forward when under pressure (or when they see that a short pass into a midfielder will immediately put that teammate under pressure in a bad spot). Imagine if instead of taking every single goal-kick short, and inevitably ending up back at Turner's nervous feet, we pushed it up field into the opponent's defensive third. We could still, and should still find moments to build from the back. But, we'd be demonstrating to the opponent that they can't just lie in wait for a mistake in our own third. That we are going to stretch them and make them play under pressure in their defensive territory. Those moments where we do see opportunities for a slower build up would then come with less pressure, and we'd generate more situations where we get deep throw-ins, free-kicks, opportunities to win second balls, etc.
However, that wouldn't be the style that GGG is insistent on us playing, so it's not going to happen under his tenure.
