The idea of genius is stupid, but when people call Ye a genius they specifically mean musical genius. I've never encountered anyone who is under the impression that he's a genius 'thinker' in some respect. This goes for calling artists 'genius' in general.

They also just dismissed them, they can still be called back whenever Israel wants. It's essentially suspension without pay for a war crime.

we need more shows like Reacher where the character is perfect and never does anything dumb. The flawed "realistic" character thing is overplayed, but its just easier for non genius writers to write non genius characters.
I was very blessed to visit Japan in Middle school on an exchange program in Middle school.

They are a huge bastion of German philosophy and literature as well. Tons of upper class Japanese people get degrees in foreign philosophy/literature. German and English are both seen as being very cosmopolitan.

I understand mocking Dennis Miller for constantly making obscure references from 50-60 years ago, but Chapo makes a lot of obscure references from the past twenty years. They've referenced Bowfinger a lot and that movie famously bombed, which meant that very few people saw it.
Don't most cult classics bomb at the box office? "It didn’t make much money" is a pretty childish way of looking at movies if I'm honest.
Need to read the Reacher manga to fully appreciate the show ...

The "this seems to be occurring..." line does not reflect on Shogun as a whole
Shogun is great for the same reasons the Northman was great: it shows a culture (more specifically a lifestyle/class in that culture) authentically and unmoored from modern awareness/convention or judgement, so you have these incredibly human, complex characters that are at once relatable while being completely alien to us.

Almost like the fantastic anime _The Apothecary Diaries._
That is a period mystery procedural set in feudal China, and you get to see how society works with an Emperor, Eunuchs and Courtesans.
It's a society where beautiful women work at a brothel, but it's not really just prostitution. The most popular women are celebrities, often hired also as company... think geisha. The brothel is paid to have the women play music and dance, play shogi or go, and sometimes just to chat. Itxs like paid dating and entertainment. And if a woman fancies you (and you can pay her fee), you can buy her out. If she doesn't like you, you can only buy her at a price she sets. And the dangers involved in the job of course comes from guys who can pay and act normal, but actually have STDs or are violent.
And that's just one aspect...
It's super interesting.
Northman shows a culture "authentically" as much as Star Wars shows space authentically. The amount of errors, right down to the premise, is mired in misconceptions or exaggerations that come from a *current day* *popular* perception of the culture.

Confabulation is super common. I had a patient once that had pretty advanced memory loss that lived in a mental health residence. He would either give throwaway answers to everything or get angry and start cussing if you asked him anything. He went at least a decade or two without anyone noticing.
