Great video thanks for putting it together so well, I've wondered about how these two compared. I bought a H once and couldnt sell it quckly enough... it was shite - I couldn't stand the tone. Effectively I see that the HR isnt that far removed from the H - its better, but still not what *I* want in an amp. If I could only choose one DSL, it would be a JCM2000 era not one of these. In the end, the 2203 and 1959 are the high-water mark for Marshalls. Everthing else - with perhaps the 410H-JS (thanks for a great amp Santiago) being the only exception/peer of those two - is lesser.
What I did to my HR in the Ultra Gain channel Marshall DSL100HR V=Volume, G=Gain Ultra Gain I V=10, G=7 Ultra Gain II V=10, G=4 UG1, G7 = UG2, G=4 UG1, G6 = UG2, G=3 Nice and bright If you want bright UG, use UG1, Max Gain 7 If you want dark UG, use UG2, Max Gain 4 Same distortion but UG1 is brighter, UG2 is darker
And pedals play really nice in the Classic side. I have the DS1 which I use with the Uktra Gain side, but the Classic I use my Metal Zone or EVH 5150 overdrive which is so nice on a Marshall. The MZ is very fizzy for sure but the bite and warm tone is awesome. 😎
@DeathMetalDevin yeh I've found tho the hr sounds better with the masters cranked and just use channel volumes for overall volume, opens the amp right up
@73prd I've love my Jettenuator. Doesn't take much from the tone at all. Pretty transparent. Don't get the bugera one... there are others but for the price the Jettenuator rules. Has a line out as well
@@DeathMetalDevin ok thankyou I'll check it out mate I was looking at the two notes captor 8 as I just run a single 8ohm 412 cab with v30s, but ill look at the jet

@@ovclay I discovered this the last couple days on the DSL100HR, notes I recorded to myself. Marshall DSL100HR Volume & Gain Ultra Gain I V=10, G=7 Ultra Gain II V=10, G=4 (Total volume handled with the master) G=Gain UG1, G7 = UG2, G=4 UG1, G6 = UG2, G=3 Nice and bright If you want bright UG channel, use UG1, Max Gain 7 If you want dark UG, use UG2, Max Gain 4 Same distortion but UG1 is brighter, UG2 is darker
The HR’s master is so you can dime the Volume to get the great tube overdrive tone and then reduce the Masters so your ears don’t bleed 🩸 The H you need an attenuator or a JHS little black box, or alternatively ise the volume control for on an EQ. I have both and live both but the crunch has more bite on the Uktra Gain channels. The HR has 7 features that are better 1) Master volumes 2) fx Loop button in front 3) High/Low power and Stabdby in front 4) bias set on top of chassis (east) 5) 6 switch foot pedal available 6) DI Out 7) More speaker impedance choices A definite upgrade
@tremdoctor007 well when you put it like hahaha. Def an upgrade in that regard. I just leaned to the Crunch of the H more so than the HR. Probably the only defining thing that sets it apart for me
@@DeathMetalDevin I just played mine a bit. Bone stock H. Behringer EQ700 in the loop, back and forth with the BOSS SD overdrive. Gain set to 6, Volume 4, only pedals engaged are the EQ and Boss Super OD, the Little Black box so my ears don’t bleed much 🩸 incredibly flexible amp. Beyond 6 the overdrive on the Ultra Channel kist gets flubby.
@tremdoctor007 hell yeah! I had the jhs black box before. Great little master volume. I have a Jettenuator i love so I use that to thicken up tones then attenuation. Cheers!
The foot switch on the HR is vastly superior. The H (that I own) I bought used and it didn’t include the switch which only switches the reverb and the ultra gain and classic channels. HR=6 switches, H=2
I like them both actually, I’ll likely add a Mr Scary to the H. I put an EQ in the fx loop and can remove what I don’t like, either turn the bass all the way off, or scoop the mids, that’s my personal taste, then add highs and high kids to add crunch back. It’s a waste of time putting an EQ in front. I have EQ’s in all my fx loops (the DSL20HR included) WARNING ⚠️ Once you start using an EQ if you don’t there’s no going back. It’s that much better. You can even get close to a Plexi tone with the right settings. These DSL’s are very adaptable
@@tremdoctor007 i get option paralysis using an eq in the loop personally. I am about to shoot a video on the Randall Diavlo 100 that I think needs an eq in the loop. Will be looking to mod it as well myself
@ An EQ can do that. Start with the band neutral and slide one at a time as you pluck on the open D & G strings to get a rock chord. I can say for tone with a 7 band EQ you’ll want the 1.6, 3.2 and 6.4k sliders to the + side, the rest the - side. I add the 100k back to + because I like that sound, the warm bass backing the high mids and highs. But some people like the upside down smile. Master the EQ and take pics for your baselines, that’s what I’ve been doing. For anyone who doesn’t have an EQ yet, the Behringer is an EXCELLENT EQ and is DIRTY CHEAP! It’s plastic but built strong, and at $25 US everywhere, it’s a no brainer. In the fx loop, you’ll barely notice anything in front. I have the BOSS GE-7 and it’s fantastic, though the Behringer is more transparent. I keep it near me 8’ from the pedal board which is right by my amp. For fine tuning room sound.
So basically, with the master turned down that low, this is just a preamp comparison. The differences in tone could easily be from tube differences or component tolerances. Shame he didn’t crank it.
@Death Metal Devin (DMD) yeah it sounds amazing. I wanted a jcm 800 but that costs like 2000 more and it's only a single channel amp that needs a boost. I saw some compassion videos of the jcm800 and the 100hr and the sound similar, the 100hr more suited for modern tones and the jcm800 for vintage tones
There R stands for reissue . They no longer make the H100 . The HR100 has a master volume and the EQ had been tweaked especially on the ultra Gain channel red Channel is much more usable .
I don’t know the difference. I can tell from this video that the amps sound different but if the circuit is “supposed” to be the same then the only difference must be the tubes. And it’s not just about the tubes gain. Each tube has different values of treble, mods and bass. Some tubes can be all bass with little treble. There are so many tubes in the DSL amplifiers where you cannot mess with the gain. The 2nd 3rd and sometimes 4th gain stage has voltage dividers. 470 over 470 is half so the 2nd gain stage divides the volume in half and you don’t get a gain control.
Since the new line of DSL Marshalls have come out I haven’t played a single one that didn’t fart on the low end. I use dimarzio tone zone pickups and they just sound soo flubby with this newer line.
Huh I’ve never heard anyone say that the new dsl sounding flubby . People complain about them being fizzy and they are until you get the volume up high enough on them, also I don’t think v30s are the best speaker for the DSL, unless they are paired with Cream Backs or G12T-75. If you crank the resonance up too much maybe they would get flubby but I don’t know, the resonance control is nice to use to adjust for cab and speaker combinations and probably at lower volumes but cranked up enough to get the power tubes working you might need the resonance completely off ? I play a Duncan Distortion into a sd1 into a dsl20cr and it might behave completely different than the 100 watt versions but playing it as a combo I tend to turn the resonance up but playing it thro a cab or combo and external cab I find that less resonance and more bass is the recipe. DSLs can be a scalpel super defined with the Marshall Clank with the right settings and boost , start with a SD1 and you might never need anything else. Anyway good luck to you, I’m not familiar with the Dimarzio pickup you mentioned, I’m more of a Duncan guy, but I can’t imagine how pickup making it flubby . You gotta mess with the dsl more than classic Marshalls but once you get that they can do just about anything you want them too.
@@brandonjackson5865 Yea I don’t know what it is but the new DSL models just aren’t tight. I know the dimarzio’s have a ton of mid range and low end but I didn’t have any issues with the JVM I had, or any older Marshall. But I tried the 40w combo and the 100w head for the new DSL’s and it just can’t cut it. Maybe an overdrive would help…but still I don’t know what they did wrong. Sounds nothing like the old JCM2000 DSL either.
@@greendayray yeah I don’t think they have to have an overdrive necessarily but I always use one in front of mine, some people just don’t get on with DSLs , everyone has their own ears and experience and if an amp doesn’t do that thing for you then it’s probably just better to move onto something else than try to fight it with pedals, they’re good to give you a little more of something you like but they’re probably not going to change your opinion of said amp .
HR seems to have more bloom/gain and texture/sizzle like old Marshalls did, maybe slightly crispier, to me it sounds a bit saggier, maybe due to gain. IMHO DSL H lacks Marshall "hair" which is top end sizzle which can be annoying and sound oldschool. When I listen to the bass alone it seems like HR is tracking faster, H is like AM radio (I guess thats what you call classic) more low end than low bass, but HR adds thick/sizzly layer on top of the bass it, sounds edgier, but at the same time less brutal by adding these oldschool highs/fizz/hair, at least for me.
