    I didn't take any chances so I bought both. I now have the entire Marshall 50 to 100 watt range of heads. Btw, I just turned 77 on Feb. 11 and still rockin'!🙂

      Damn, you're more than twice my age, and I probably ain't gonna live to 40. More power to you though, so long as you can still rock out. If I made it to 77, I wouldn't be able to see or hear, much less use my fingers.

      That would be a mind blowing collection of Marshall's to own. Like a Marshall museum in your own home and you get to play them all as much as you want .

    • @AdamRainStopper
      @AdamRainStopper Рік тому +2

      @@adamwatson6916 Yeah, that is quite the collection. I had something like that, just not all Marshalls, back when my home studio was bigger and not just for me. Once covid came, I started doing work from home shit for an eye doctor in Newark because bands weren't coming to record, so I had to REALLY thin the herd. I converted the old studio to be lived in and moved what was left of the gear to my living room, since nobody ever used the living room anyway.
      Now I have 5 amps and maybe 8 or 9 cabs. Even with that, I only really play through one amp - a hot-rodded Peavey Classic 30 head - and one of two cabs. Oh, I also have a Frenzel preamp and a compression pedal, going to the effects return of a solid state bass amp and a Peavey bass cab with a 15" Black Widow. So technically 6 amps and 10 cabs.
      I don't want more, I'd like to get rid of one and replace it with an old DSL201 (pr maybe 401) combo though. I like those.

    Great vid! I've loved my JCM 2000 DSL100 for almost 20 year now, it has remained a set piece in the collection. The deep switch issue with either "not enough" or "too much" low end sounded very familliar. My fix was having an amp tech replace the standard switch with a pot that replaces resistor R43. Gives you the chance to fine tune it, instead of the all or nothing situation

    I bought the DSL100HR last December and I absolutely love it. It now sits next to my Invective 120 and multi-watt Triple Rectifier as my 3 favorite amps I own. I love how modern it sounds while still having that Marshall character. I've got a simple Ibanez TS and Boss NS-2 setup in front of it and it hangs with the Invective for the more modern metalcore and djenty stuff. It's quite versatile, even with just the two button footswitch. I don't use the tone switch button because I'd rather just swap to my Triple Rec for the scooped sound, but I get why its there and it's probably a really useful feature for someone that doesn't have multiple amps. I don't use the built in Reverb either, but again probably a nice feature for someone without a reverb pedal or just wants a simplified setup.
    The only things I don't like about the amp, and they're pretty insignificant, is that the tolex kind of looks like plastic and the Marshall logo is a bit small when compared to other Marshalls. Both of these points are very noticeable in your video with the JCM 2000 stacked on top of the DSL100HR. The glossy look of the DSL tolex is a little strange compared to the more matte/leathery look on the JCM. Also the DLS100 logo being tiny and sort of hidden while the JCM logo is massive and easy to identify the amp. Could be a spacing issue, but it just feels like they're being shy about the DSL name while the older brother and the UK amps display what model they are proudly. These are just complaints about cosmetic choices though, nothing about sound, quality, etc.

    great video. love the channel. Can you do a comparison between the DSL100HR and the JVM410 please!
    as for the jcm2000 and the DSL, biggest difference i noticed between them when i had both amps was that the EQ knobs are a lot more responsive/sensitive on the new 100.
    not as subtle and could cover a wider range. if i had the space i would have kept both amps, but for me DSL100HR was the better choice.
    turn the resonance all the way up on both and they sound almost identical.

    I have owned the TSL 100, bought a brand new in the box JCM2000 DSL 100 and currently own the DSL100 HR...I prefer this DSL 100HR HANDS DOWN!!
    The TSL could do a lot but had no real voice that stood out...the JCM DSL just couldn't deliver the drive I wanted , sounded very boxy to me at the time.....the 100HR is just such a more fire breather but can be backed off that it is a win for me...the 100HR even sounds good in the 50w mode

    They both sound good and very similar. To my ears, the JCM 2000 has a little more boldness, while the modern DSL has an ever-so-slight "blanket over the speakers" effect. But it's very subtle and could just be the EQ anyway. The Resonance button is a nice feature on the modern one, as opposed to the all-or-nothing approach of the Deep switch on the JCM 2000.
    The only other difference I noticed is that the JCM 2000 seems to have a touch more transparency.

    I just bought a '04 JCM2000 100W, and I've had the DSL100HR for a while now and for the most part I am right there with you.
    The only difference for me is that I prefer the Crunch Channel on the DSL100HR. I turn it on and get a nice Angus Young tone on tap with little to no effort.
    I definitely feel that the Spring Reverb on the JCM2000 is far and away much better than the Digital Reverb on the DSL100HR, as you said it is very subtle.
    I think there is more gain on tap with the JCM2000, and it doesn't break up quite as much between 7 and 10 like the DSL. I'm running an MXR 10 Band EQ through the FX Loop of my DSL that boosts my gain that I also use to shape my lows and mids that I never use for the JCM.
    I think it really boils down to what you have also said; the JCM has a rounder more vintage tone whereas the DSL is tighter and much more modern sounding.
    Sometimes I use an MXR Micro Amp on both which tends to sound pretty sweet, but again, if I push the DSL100HR too hard it starts getting muddy. The JCM2000 takes it like a champ.

    • @PhillipCalvin627
      @PhillipCalvin627 2 роки тому

      Of course I just sat around and EQ'd both amps with the same riffs and guitar. More or less found a nice setting for both amps that stayed tight, but played to the strengths of either amp. The DSL is tighter, and the JCM has a killer low end.
      I guess the gain is about the same, it's just how they are voiced. After messing around with them, you can get killer complementary sound.
      Honestly I just want to set these up in stereo.

    Both great, JCM 2000 sounds more like what in my mind is a Marshall. Less bite and softer attack with the old 50 watter. The DSL heavy sound moves into Recto territory. Like he says, the more gain, the bigger the difference. That would be the preamp section, I guess.

    great comparison. I got the previous DSL100H and I'm quite happy with it.. I don't know how it is different in EQ from these two. I played the jcm2000 100w once, and I remember it was quite close to mine. Between the two in this video I would prefer the jcm2000 dsl 50w. Volume a bit more manageble (100w is too loud) and I think it should be a bit less heavy.. I also like more the vintage tone...

    On Neumann KH120's through a recording interface, they sound pretty close. Though, I personally. liked the DSL100 more.. but that was the tonality and inherant compresssion that could be easily matched between the two.
    Listening again through a pair of HD650s and an SPL headphone amp I noticed a difference in the after tranisent fizz as the chords died out.. the 100 had a more pleasant less noisy handle on that..
    Oh and the 100 had more body in the crunch demo.. subtle but there
    I only listened to the Crunch, Rock and Metal isolated comparisons

    Hey Jon, you always mention you match the York IR's to the specific amps you use. Question, how do you determine which has the best match other than the IR being within the similar domain as the amps. Honestly, I had a chance to demo the DSL100 through a 1960A cab with greenbacks and the tones are not to my liking, however, the IR's sounded good in your comparison I have to admit. The JCM2000 is too vintage for me, I lean toward the DSL100 in your comparison. Thanks!

      Marshall solved the bias drifting problem by coming out with a later version mainboard that made this amp really scream.I had to shelve my JCM 2000 dsl100 for a few years till the bias drifting problem was finally solved.I bought a Crate Blue Voodoo BV 100 to replace my DSL100.What a mistake that was.I finally bit my tongue,and bought another JCM2000 DSL100 which was a later model.But it still had issues,but not like the first one.

      @@jacksmith4460 ,The hatred came from the bias drifting mainboard.Marshall shouldve recalled all the DSL and TSL amps to replace the mainboards.From what I understand they would replace it while you waited at the marshall factory in england.But they would replace it with the old revision,which it would eventually go bad too.Unfortunetly the marshall service centers in the US didnt have that luxury.Finally Marshall came out with a new mainboard,and that finally solved the problem.You have no idea what its like to drop $1000 on a new amp,and have it go bad in a few months.Thats what happened to me.Even the marshall service center could not fix it.They gave it back to me unfixed.It went into the closet for a years.I bought a Crate Blue Voodoo BVH 100.It was so bad.I gave up guitar playing for a few years.I still have the Blue Voodoo but it terrible.I made a big mistake.

    I have a dsl 2000 50w in the same clean condition i bought it broken and i just updated the motherboard for the latest revision and fitted brand new JJ tubes i now have a rock solid amp in great condition. Its the condition of the amp which made me buy it. I also have the DSL5R head as i wanted something i could run without the use of a attenuator as they can take too much away from the tone unless you buy super expensive so i have to add some EQ. I love both amps. I sat the dsl5 on top of a MG15 mini stack. Which i never really liked . I fits perfectly and i upgraded the speakers to vintage 30's . I do how ever love the marshall MG100 dfx which is a much better sounding amp than the little 15w version.

  • @mediocremetalguy

    I think the 2000 is more cold/harsh on the clean, and the DSL more cold/harsh on the crunch. On lead 1 the JCM is maybe a bit more forward. In lead 2 the DSL is kinda more open, and the JCM a bit rounder. But all in all they are VERY similar. And intrimning you could tweak them in eachother. Maybe so because of the 20 years difference.
    I own a DSL100hr and was looking for a JCM2000, But don’t think it’s worth the money. The circuits seems the same and it’s more about what speakers you use. Both amps is just as good! It all comes down to if you want to buy a new, or if your budget is more at a used older one.
    Thanks Jon for sorting that out. Great and helpful vid👍🏻

    I prefer the JCM in all clips. In the more saturated sounds, both in crunch and lead mode, the JCM 2000 while returning a level of gain equal to the DSL allows a better intelligibility of the single notes that make up the chords.
    Unfortunately, the problems of the JCM are others, certainly not the sound. My 2002 JCM 100 is giving me problems with the bias drift which, however, can be solved because it has been talked about in many forums and solving kits are sold at low prices.

  • @icenic_wolf

    I honestly didn't expect to hear much of a difference, and if I did, I figured I'd prefer the newer one. HA!
    The 2002 DSL sounded so much more "creamy", with rounder edges and slightly more pronounced mids.
    I wonder if you could EQ the new DSL100 to be indistinguishable in a blind test from the '50? Maybe an Echoplex or something similar in front (at unity gain -- just for the tone shaping) would do the trick?

  • @DominiqueHeine
    @DominiqueHeine 2 роки тому

    Interesting, I liked the 50 a lot better. The lower mids are just much more to my liking.
    Something in the DSL100 sounded a bit papery or hollow to me, if that makes sense. Maybe the slight accentuation around 2kHz makes the lower frequencies seem a bit more receded.
    Thanks for the comparison.

    I have a new DSL20h that sometimes I play through my old TSL2000 60w combo. Well, I find the DSL clean to be clearer and brighter, compared to the TSL, and more pedal friendly. On the dirty side, the DSL sounds even more Marshall than my TSL, which is not necessarily something good every time, but with less flexibility but easier integration with newer equipment, I'd keep the DSL if it were the case...
    Of course, I would not gig with neither... But that's only me.

    Obviously very similar amps, whose slight variations may be attributed more to the differences in wattage rather than preamp design.
    DSL 100 sounded generally a bit more compressed in all channels, and sounded generally tighter and bolder in high gain settings, especially OD2. The JCM 2000 was slightly more vintage voiced, and sweeter sounding. I'd be happy with either, they're very close, but given the choice I'd probably go with the modern DSL for the extra bit of tweakability.
