      Pretty silly. I can tell you that you can run low output pickups, any kind on a high gain amp and still get high gain tones. Runa hot p8ckup on. a low gain amp will still get you low gain. Youre not going to get a metal tone by running the highest output pickups into a jcm 900 or a fender twin reverb. You will however get a metal tone with single coil vintage output pickup into a marshall jvm.

    • @ThatRandomGuyInTheComments
      @ThatRandomGuyInTheComments 5 років тому +15

      @@utecastronoova863 Character/texture of the gain will be different. While what you say is largely correct, it IS possible to hit the front end of a low gain amp with a pickup + clean boost (to simulate an outrageously hot pickup) to get some pretty nasty tone. It'd be interesting to see in a shootout, don't you think?

  • @TheGuitologist
    @TheGuitologist 5 років тому +79

    I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but here goes...The numbers on the fronts of the amps are fairly arbitrary. They aren't really telling you much about the actual resistance at each "notch". You'd need to open it up and put a meter on each pot for that. But I think rather than setting the two amps to the same settings, a better exercise would be to set the 100W where it sounds balls, then come back and try to get the 20W to match it, if not in the room, at least in the mic, and then talk about the different settings you had to set them to and why. Anyway, a fun one as always. Thanks for the vid!

      yep, those numbers are mostly an average wattage if you will, dsl20 for instance says that the range is 11-30W.

    As someone who started with a 15W practice amp, then moved up to a Peavey Bandit, then a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, a Twin and finally a Mesa Mark V, I can say without a doubt, the best tone is ~100W tube amp. And particularly a 100W tube amp through a 4x12 cabinet (which I don't have because of portability). A full stack. It's not even a question. But there are other considerations. If the money, volume or weight is too much for you, by all means get what fits you. I have a 2x12 cabinet for that reason. But the facts are the facts.

      @@boggeshzahim3713 In a 'live' situation the sound pressure waves from the loudspeaker vibrate the body of the guitar, that vibrates the strings, the pickups pickup the string vibration, the pickup signal drives the amp input and the amp drives the loudspeaker. And so on... At high enough loop gain you will get sustained feedback - a note can be held forever (well a long time). At lower loop gains (even relatively low volumes) you still get a more responsive feel. With a good compressor or even some fuzz or overdrive pedals you can easily get enough loop gain for 'infinite' sustain even at low volumes.

      wich model/wattage do you suggest?

    • @TraneFrancks
      @TraneFrancks 2 роки тому +1

      @@napomania I personally have a DSL1CR with Genalex Gold Lion tubes. I never use the Ultra Gain channel, as I personally find the tones on that channel to be pretty much unusable. The Classic Gain channel, however, is lovely.
      It's worth noting that the DSL1 (both combo and head) do _not_ feature master volume on the Classic Gain channel. That means that changing gain characteristics on that channel also changes the volume. It's also worth noting that the tone of the amp changes whether you're operating at 0.1 Watts vs 1 Watt. It's not a massive difference, but the amp does sound better at its normal 1 Watt operation setting. It's quite apparent that the amp uses the tubes differently on the different power settings.
      I'm an apartment dweller, so I would only use the DSL1 at home. At 0.1 Watts with mine dimed at home, I literally can only play before 6 p.m. to avoid complaints. I occasionally let it rip at 1 Watt, but for less than a minute and _only_ on rare occasions.
      If you go for a higher DSL power rating, note that all the other models are master volume designs. I think it's also worth mentioning that the wee DSL1CR combo did find its voice quite nicely after a few months of pounding. The 8" Celestion Eight 15 takes a bit of time to break in, but sounds quite good once it does. IMO, YMMV and all that.
      Pete is not a fan of small cabs and the videos reflect that. However, the videos also don't have the possibility of time to break in. I don't have any recordings, but I can say that over time I have noticed a significant improvement in tone. My DSL1CR is not the amp today that I bought two years ago. It is much better now.
      Full disclaimer: I found the Marshall-supplied tubes to be flubby. A set of Genalex Gold Lion tubes tightened up the bottom end nicely and added sparkle to the top end. In 2022, that would also be quite an additional cost given the situation around tube availability. As such, I strongly recommend playing one of these amps prior to purchase.

      It’s about compression and not volume really. My 15 watt tube amps are just as loud at my 30/40 watt amps. When I compare the a 100 watt twin, the twin is just wayyyy more spatial (not necessarily a good thing). Just a point to be made. Personally I play in a lot of larger ensembles so I want something smaller that will just fill the right frequencies but if I’m in a trio I’d want something with lots of headroom and space

    Something I have experienced, though, is a tube/valve amp really needs a certain amount of volume to actually make a good sound. Best I can describe it is like trying to sing through a straw when the volume is too low. Turning it up lets it breathe a bit more, so the sound is a little more full. Maybe a lower power amp would let you get past that stage on the volume knob without being too loud to use at home.

    My first amp was a 1970 Twin in which I replaced the speakers (blown) with JBL D-120s. It was a terrible amp for me. It was unspeakably loud and very difficult to get my desired tone (Clapton, Bloomfield) at club volumes. I would have been much better served with a Vibrolux. (Back in 1970, there weren't even 1% of the amp choices there are now.) IMO, you have to work the tubes to the point where you're getting the maximum number of electrons moving across the vacuum without it getting too distorted. That maximizes clean sustain - my holy grail.

Or 400W depending on what Ohmage I hook up. - But it's also a solid-state power amplifier with a tube pre-amp, so it's not the same. - I guess they decided on that much juice to kind of give it the same kind of driving power towards the speakers. - Then again, I usually don't turn it up thát much anyway, but it's available. And I guess it would be a bit more consistent between different levels.

As in basically 100 Watts Marshalls pretty gunned, if not all the way. - They might do quite different music with different styles, the ones I mentioned, but they do have things in common in terms of approach.

      In the olden days, where all of the guitar sound at the venue came out of the same speaker cabinet, they didn't always have a choice to not be gunning their amps.

    For what is worth, I think that it heavily depends on the whole amp's design. For example, I loved my 24W Supro amp, I thought it was super loud when I first got it. But then I started playing with guitar players with 100W Marshalls, and my Supro was not even in the conversation.
    I then got a 45W Fender Bassbreaker. Now, that is a loud amp! But I actually struggle a lot more with that amp than with the Supro, because it's difficult to make it do a loud and clear clean sound. I constantly feel like I'm missing a ton of headroom. Also, even though it is a Fender based on a Bassman preamp, it is very very gainy. In my opinion, it sounds way more like a Vintage Marshall than either the DSL or Origin amps that the actual Marshall makes. It is also similarly difficult to use because of the need to turn it up to get distortion.
    So, I really want to get myself a 100W amp to really get some clean headroom. It's crazy how much I struggle for headroom with a 45W amp!

    The general rule is that 10x the power = twice the volume
    So 100w is about twice as loud as 10w
    That is kinda oversimplifying, and there are other differences (more power = more low end, tighter, more headroom, etc.). Also that is assuming everything else (like speakers, etc.) are the same.

    Its funny how people say ‘ turn a marshall up to ten ‘. Its just not true, at full volume theres just far too much of everything including compression. I had a 100Watt jcm800 back in the mid 90’s a full stack ie 2 4x12 cabs one one top of the other. Playing my SG straight in with no pedals there was a sweet spot about 2 oclock on the master volume where it was beautiful, harmonically rich, huge headroom and you felt it in your stomach and created lovely sustain as the cabs made the strings vibrate...........memories........my ears ring constantly now though, be carefull !

    Less as in 15-30 like the EVH Lunchbox, Victory or Marshall DSL 20's 's because u have to crank the amp. The tubes sound best cranked/ saturated...and u can't crank a 100 watt Marshall or any amp unless you're playing a large venue which few of us do...

    • @utecastronoova863

      Irrelevant because a 100 watt dual rectifier witha 4x12 cab is going to sound way bigger and more bottom end than a mini reto and a 1x12 cab. Youre just not going to get that thump, regardless if the power tubes are getting heated and with modern preamp gain i find the need to get overdriven powertube tones irrelevant.

      If you like smaller sounds and blues or just want softer tones less is good. It depends on the application but to say a lunchbox amp makes the need for a 100 watt head irrelevant is false. The difference in decibels is not much.. you cranka 50 watt amp and its not half as loud as 100. Its only a few decibels. If you want powertube overdrive at lower volumes you need attenuation .

I have a Marshall JCM 900 SLX, an original Peavey 5150- 2 and yes, the 6L6's have more bottom end than the EL 84's obviously, but I run it through one or two Marshall 4 x 12's and believe it or not there's not that much difference as u would think. Plenty of bottom end with clarity. I hear ya on the larger tubes. The mini Rect. always sounded a bit thin to me. Nothing like a Dual or Triple Rectifier. The Lunchbox through a 4x12 makes it thump way more. The EVH Lunch Box gain is way more than a blues tone though, it's off the chart...Cheers my fellow Rocker...

    I’ve found that I never need the 100 watts by myself, and I never need them onstage, but when I get in the practice room with the band I have to turn up to hear myself. When those amps are up around 60-75% volume they start to mush up. Sometimes you want that. Other times you lose that tight attack which is vital in a 5 piece metal band. I loved my Mark V: 25 until I took it to practice my my buddies 5150 half stack. I sold it for a mark IV. It kept up and then some. Wish I could afford to have both though

    The only reason to get a larger amp, in my opinion, is if it's coupled with more features. A 1-watt amp can easily gig nowadays, you'll just be running it into a desk mixer and have everything come out of the PA - but quite often, you are still sacrificing a lot of features the smaller you go.

    • @blib3786

    If a 20 watt Amp on full gives a 30 db noise level at 1 metre to get TWICE that level i.e 60db at 1 metre you will need 200 watts !!
    or put simply to get twice as loud you need 10 times the wattage. However on valve amps you will get ambient PEAK outputs of approx 4 times the stated wattage which is an average called RMS This is why you get better dynamics from valve amps that respond to your playing style and give you more "feel" . Usually to get a sweet tone you need to crank your amp up full and then turn your guitar down to 3 and play while increasing the volume slightly untill you hit a sweet spot (leave the tone on the guitar on 10)
    Ultimately to get the sound you want you need to match your pickups to the amp and or experiment with input booster pedals.
    Brian may gets his sound with AC30s some boost and delays . Eric Clapton used a 5 watt tube amp to get the sound he wanted in the studio. It is all about sound and tone . Electric guitarists need to be tone merchants - Michael Shenke uses 50 watt Marshalls
    because he prefers the tone over the 100 watts !!

    I always get crapped on for saying that a 100w just pushes harder than a 20/40 etc and now I know I'm right. It's all about harmonics even turned up to 3 or 4 (pretty load)on the volume dial 5 to 7 gets humming along nicely on a 100w. And no you don't always have to play at 11 on a 100 w to get a great sound either, people forget this. Thank you so much Andertons. My dad just said "does a 4 cylinder sound louder than a v8? Considering everything was being set to 12 o'clock, perhaps it's just me, but everything sounded a little tame (probably the recording method, I know). But I couldn't set my Blackstar HT Stage 100 at 12 o'clock, it would take the roof off, even in a live situation. Latest trick I've used is putting a volume pedal in the loop to get the amp saturation and as the pedal is in the loop, reducing the signal without any loss.

    The reason you noticed the smaller amps being more rounded and with less punch is because you are driving the same set of speakers with both amps, you really need a speaker cab suited to the smaller amps to be realistic to them. It's the same with the OX, they are just turning watts into heat and again you have less power to drive to speaker cones. It's just like life really, it's all about relationships and how well we get on together.

    Interesting... I thought The Captain sounded much better playing through the Victory. When he used the marshall, it just sounded harsh and brittle. When Chappers played through it with the same guitar it sounded very different. Maybe it's just my ear- which tends to prefer Fendery amp tones. Also, the Strat sounded better through the 40 watt Victory when Captain turned it up. (but again, I kind of prefer that slightest hair of drive on "clean" tones- esp with a brand F type guitar.) Not really surprising, that's how tube amps work. The headroom is the main difference. A smaller tube amp will compress and drive earlier- at volume levels that won't necessarily knock a house off it's foundation. The big amps were designed in a time when guitar players had to provide ALL their own sound reinforcement when playing live. Thus, they needed to be loud, and have lots of headroom. Today, that's not true- everything is run through the PA. Also, that "boxy" sound of a great, low wattage combo screaming it's lungs out is awesome- and plastered all over a lot of classic records.
