Model Railroad Update 68: "Fun" with Fascia

- For some reason we decided to work on the fascia this week. And it took at LOT longer than anticipated. It really should have gone up a bit earlier, as we now have to do a fair amount of work to bring the scenery out to the fascia, in some areas of the layout.
We also should have planned a little better so we could have used gentle curves to the fascia as opposed to the angular cuts we have now. Oh well...we were able to use curves in a few areas.
Once we get the fascia joints all smoothed out and sanded, and the scenery brought out, it will be ready for paint. Then something to hang below to cover the underside of the layout, and give a nice finished look to the layout.
We went with a air brad nailer to install, except for some heavier screws in the area with a curve for better holding. We figured we can always add screws later on if the brads and Liquid Nails don't hold up over time.

It's looking great. Yea alot of people don't know that fasia is part of the bench work.
Love it.
Looks great! Trust me, the brads are enough to hold on the curved sections. Our club has just hung our fascia with a bradnailer and we have several curved sections and the brads are holding perfectly. Your going one step farther and using liquid nails so that with lots of brads will be fine..specially once your foam scenery base is in place.
Paint your fascia black (2 coats), and black drop cloth (to hide whatever is under the layout) black takes the eyes to layout, butit is personable choice. I have done this on my layout and it works wonders for me and have received good comments from people that pick at the littlest detail, if you know what I mean. Keep up the great work, I have found your videos very informative and have picked up a few tips from you, Good luck with the railroad.
Coming along nicely.
Thanks for your dedication. You're the most consistent UA-camr I follow and even a small update on your layout is enjoyable to watch.
Good job, nice video.
looks awesome mate coming together. Andrew
Looking good!
It's amazing what a little spackle, caulk and paint will do.
Thanks for sharing.

Things are moving along nicely Rob. Out of all the layout videos on youtube you definitely have been the most thorough with your videos there are no large gaps in your videos when something is completed you bring to us and i cant speak for everyone but i feel this layout is almost my own because we are with you every step. thanks as always. Fascia looks good. I like the idea of having the drawer of storage to swap out modern era to 50s or Euro especially if you have the room to have maybe multi level drawers that would be easy to swap with.
+Matt Jenkins (vwgolfer187) Thanks Matt! Good to know folks are enjoying the updates. We will keep 'em coming, good and bad, as we move this layout along!
Love the curved fascia, looking great! Happy to see the trampoline is still around too =)
I love how clean and professional your power districts panel looks. Vinyl lettering? I really want to do something like that on my next layout. Great idea for storing cars on shelving underneath, a thin plexi-glass lid over top could keep the dust off them as well. Thanks for sharing your great ideas with us!
Ben
+BArailsystem Ben- thanks, those are actually reverse engraved acrylic panels. The rear is coated with a "base" color, tan in our case, then the reverse side is engraved leaving clear lines and letters, which are then painted with your choice of color. I thought we did a video on them but I can't find it, so I may make a short video covering the panels.
Rob Bennett That would be awesome, thanks!
This is turning out awesome. I wish I had a basement to put my N-scale into and enjoy. A lot of inspiration here.
try using "Great Stuff" expanding foam sealant lightly in the gaps, anything that comes out over the top can be trimmed away with a sharp knife.
+Otto Bettcher Great idea! In fact I went out at lunch at bought some, going to try it tonight! Should be a lot easier that slopping Sculptamold in there...THANKS!
Fascia looks good, few caps filled will be all good
Cheers Glynn
Nice update. You've got a huge layout. That's a lot of work for 1 person.
Good advice re. the timing of fascia installation. Glad you made the point or I might have waited too long too. Thanks Rob
Getting there slowly, huh? You've given me food for thought as to how I'm going to make my fascia Rob. Nice work. You'll easily fill and shape those small gaps I'm sure. I find that filler and paint covers a multitude of sins .........David(UK)
I will be very interested on how you do the corners , I just built a closet for my little girl and used wood paneling , and have to find a way to dress up the corners , yours does look good , nice jobs with all the dif elevations , and doing shelves under the layout will help with the clutter that we all get under our layouts ,, lol , good job sir ,
Good update. I was curious how putting up the fascia with brads would work out. My concern is if I ever had to remove it for some reason. To fill in the small gaps between the pink foam and the fascia, I have seen people use a can of the "Great Stuff" spray foam. Spray it in, let it expand and harden, then trim with a razor knife, paint and finish to taste.
Hi, At the beginning of the video you had a gap, use foam again cut a sliver of it to fit & glue it in place, i did this & worked well.
Al in BC
+Al Jaster Thanks Al- I will in some locations, and also try Great Stuff as suggested by Otto. Some of the smaller gaps will just need some "Fast n Final".
+Rob Bennett make sure it is non expanding foam. I've been watching for quite a while and have enjoyed watching the progress
Use some velcro to hold the piece you want to keep removable to access the pop-out hatch
the layout looks amazing! I've almost caught up to where your at currently. have you thought about semi-permanent drawers or cabinets for your rolling stock and engines under Eugene yard?
Hi , talk about dedication! . a Rail Fan's paradise . I did want to ask ,,, Why is your backdrop so high on the layout ? I would think it would be even at the bottom ? Ray in Pa.
Hey Stephen, nice layout. Question: where did you get the backdrop? and how long is it, Thanks
+Hawkes HO Layout We purchased the backdrops (it is actually several, pieced together) from Backdrop Junction. Dave was very good to work with and he helped us customize the entire sequence of backdrops so they all matched. It is around 100 ft of backdrop!
+Rob Bennett Thanks Rob, It matches very nice. I need about 170', I probably can get away with 150', I'll get in touch with them, again Thanks
You're not having fun with fascia's until you build them with exotic hardwoods. You can thank me later.
