- Doug Yates joined The Dale Jr. Download and share stories with Dale and co-host Mike Davis. Doug gave insight in Darrell Waltrip's departure from DiGard that resulted in unspoken animosity that spanned decades. It wasn't until Robert's final months, before cancer took his life, that son Doug found a way to get them together to bury the hatchet.
Doug and his daddy are 2 legends of the sport. Brought up Davey, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, Elliott Sadler, David Gilliland, etc. 2 very bright minds that kept the sport moving forward. Thanks for having Doug on your show, Jr!

The Yates family is a cornerstone of the sport. I have considered Robert to be a hero of mine for most of my life. A more stand up guy has never been created. Thanks to a little ARCA racing I had the honor of meeting him and he was as kind as I ever imagined he would be. The day we lost Robert and the day we lost Davey are two of the darkest in my memory. Thanks to Doug for keeping the tradition alive and continuing to put out some bad ass Ford engines.
Doug is a very nice man, I had the pleasure to meet him and his dad Robert at Talladega several years ago and they were nothing but class.
Dave Allison was how I became a nascar fan as a teen! Just a good dude I could relate too bc he talked and acted like I did or really wanted too.
Great to see Doug Yates for more than 5 seconds. Icon in the sport wish we heard more from him
From the sound of it and based on what I've heard from all sorts of people to ever be involved with the sport, Robert was a sincerely wonderful person. He really was instrumental in laying out the foundations of how engines are built in a modern context especially with their R&D. The man had such a lease on getting the most out of horsepower turnout. Ford should be proud to have the Yates family honorably represent their company over the years. Robert will always be fondly remembered. Thanks for the upload, Jr.
I have an old book that shows Robert Yates in the engine room working for Holman Moody. So if you look at where lot of these guys come from, you'll understand why they were so good. Cotton Owen's, Ray Nichols, etc.
More respect for Davey, Robert and Larry than just about anyone. Man, what could have been.
Robert was the NASCAR Ford engine guru. He sold his basic ‘combo’ to Ford and the small Ford teams with the ‘Cook-Book’ were running as fast or better Faster than Jack.
I miss Robert. It was good getting to see Doug Yates on there with Dale Jr. I wish Doug Had a cup team out there with some Yates rockets . I am a BIG Yates fan. Thanks to Dale Jr for having Doug on there.
Just watched on peacock was awesome. Being 47 it's awesome to hear the stories of those times that we will never see again do to the changing world. Doug Yates Awesome Job carrying On Your Dad's Legacy. Great Podcast.
Met Robert Yates and his crew after a race at Martinsville. He autographed a hat and m&m’s jacket while sitting in his vehicle in traffic outside the track. Was so nice and just and awesome guy. I still have both those items.
Dales memory is amazing of who he remembers between drivers and crew chiefs and the years. Mind blowing
That's what I love about Junior also. He knows his history and love him talking about racing in the 70's and how he wishes he could have driven back then. You can see his joy in talking about NASCAR history, plus just a damn good guy too.

Its cool to here you all talk about Bobby Allison my dad and Bobby where business partners in Bobby Allison wireless. So I got to meet and go to races with Bobby some it was a very cool experience. It was fun being in the pits and garage back then. I do remember Jr. In the garage area as a kid. LoL

It’s cool to see the passenger side off the all star car hanging in there. I remember watching it spank that ass in Daytona July race 2001. Very emotional win for sure. Dale Sr was my hero and grew up watching him. It was great to see an Earnhardt in Daytona victory lane again . I sure miss Big E and June bug on the track .
Listening to you two fills in a lot of gaps. It's more than a little interesting...👍
Tim Brewer claimed that they tested without the bumper and found out it was faster and that it was attached to the car with two rivets so that it would fall off during the race
Doug you are a real under standing guy that what it take to be s great manager or crew chief I work for ford in the hyper div 21 yrs with the same attitude. You guys have always ❤been out standing people your dad was a great guy thanks l.d.k.
He was one of the best guys and best engine builders around Doug is the same just like he's dad great people l.d.k.
We should still be able to beat the snot out of someone that throws a beer can at you. It's why society is unraveling, no one suffers the consequences of their actions. I bet that guy never threw another beer can in his life...
I was always told in the old days you could take matters in your own hands and really beat the other guy up if he was doing something he shouldn't and there wouldn't be any issues. No one dared to do what they do today, in those days they drew the line, and no one dared cross it, unless they want a bruised head.
I'm sure his throwing arm is still stuck up his ass where Robert put it all those years ago!

I met Doug at Big Tiny's BBQ in Mooresville. He was there for a big company thing and I was in town on business and the owner just happened to know him and he introduced us. He is a very gracious man and a wonderful spokesperson and probably an even better engine builder. I'd love to have a Yates engine in my Ford F-250, lol!!

Dale jr and this podcast is awesome...........Love the insight from Doug Yates and as always getting into the **innovations** (wink wink) of the teams in Nascar........Question: Dale has had Dale Sr.'s crew chiefs, car owner, teammates, people who have worked with him along the way, the Eury's, almost every family member and a lot of the drivers who race with him. Not one **innovation** story that i have heard....................Why??............surely were not expected to believe that 3 car was not **massaged** any.....lol
Doug's father is not only a NASCAR HOF member, but was also a HUMAN BEING HOF'er in life! As for Doug himself, well that apple sure didn't roll far from the tree 😉

Roush/Yates created the FR9 engines that are used in all NASCAR Fords.
I remember when drivers would blow up motors on purpose, because they were under powered, then they added tell tale tachs. It would save the the highest rev!!!
King of building horsepower!! I don't know him but I'm guessing he's a class act 24/7.
Bumper gate. Reported at the time the bumper was mounted w/1/4" bolts. This was the time when bump drafting was just starting to appear at the big tracks. 1 interview years later Bobby said he didn't like being pushed, so he had the bumper mounted that way to keep the others off of it. Once it fell off , no 1 could bump him anymore in the race.
What Robert Yates did to the ford heads put Ford back in racing in the 80’s. Unbelievable the power he could get out of the clevor set up.
Got to give Ernie Elliott a lot of credit. the Elliott's is actually the ones that put Ford back on the map when they got back in racing in 82.

@@matthewnosal6893 Ernie Elliott didn't run clevors till after 85. They were able to stockpile Cleveland blocks and Heads from Australia. Not sure exactly when they switched over to the new Ford SVO Windsor block with Cleveland heads but I believe it was about 1986. If you recall Ford developed the new block and Cale Yarborough with waddell Wilson building the engines at the 1985 Daytona 500. They had overheating problems and eventually blew up during the race. Of course they got that problem fixed later on it was a water jacket problem.

Context: after going through tech at Daytona NASCAR made Bobby's team change the height and position of the rear bumper on the Buick, and in the process it wasn't welded back on very securely. With all the bumping and banging in the 500 it got knocked loose and fell off. Afterwards Bobby said that made the car's handling pretty loose, but as we all know, "Loose is fast."
I saw Dick Hutcherson knock a fan out at the fall race at Charlotte in 1967. The fan was upset because Dick ran someone hard and couldn't pass. Dick keep telling him to go on and leave him alone. Then I heard a thump and the fan was on his back out cold.
I just found a RY #28 Ricky Rudd hot wheel at a flea market the other day. My favorite people in NASCAR.
Robert Yates beating a fan's ass - I would have loved to see that! I remember when Rooster was crowing about his Yates engine at a plate race and got in a fight with the engine guys after the race - guessing Robert would back the engine guys over Ricky.

I went down to victory lane for free as late as 2003 CHARLOTTE. Tony Stewart won, NY Daddy had a Stewart coozey and grabbed a hand full of burn out rubber and threw in it. But I understand why fans can't go now and I see why because they're drunk by then and also people these days have no respect.
After seeing many races back then be lost due to engines blowing up I cant blame any driver for being upset and vocal. Even Earnhardt would a won a few more if the engine didnt blow.
Mr Winston, NASCAR engines are built to only survive one race. Sometimes they didn't.
with technology nowadays you rarely see a motor blow up. things have sure changed.

I'm confused why he referred to DiGard's signing of Ricky Rudd in 1981 as a "rookie deal", since Rudd won the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year in 1977.

i bet i could speak for most of the 40-50 years olds that were pretty tired of dw in general.
Seems like Robert Yates stepping down from the day to day, Losing M&Ms and UPS and keeping Travis Kvapil over Gilly going into 09 were the undoings of RYR. Gilliland wasn't a great driver in Cup, but he was better than Kvapil.
Gilliland was a good driver just didnt have the equipment to show case his talent. That free credit report 38 in 2008 was my all time favorite scheme.
@@Griswaldization yep, look at what he did to get the Yates ride. Getting that win on a severely underfunded team showed how good of a driver Gilliland was.
@@ronniespring8888 I totally agree he certainly did more with less that's for sure. That win at Kentucky in 2006 was probably the biggest underdog victory in Nascar!!

Okay, when ever I hear “BUMPER GATE & GARY NELSON” (in the same sentence I immediately think the worst! Nascar didn’t hire Nelson to be the competition director just because. They hired him because he was slick Willy. Idk the aerodynamics on the 82’. But I know my cars in the 90s-2010s you could get 15-25ct if you did it correctly.

Down playing "bumper gate". With the bumper falling off it made the car even more faster. Honestly, Nascar should have had them fix it, if not they shouldn't have been able to continue. Cale Yarborough would have probably won if that would have been the case. He would have won three in the row perhaps if he still goes to the 28 team for the '83 and '84 season.
Dale Sr was in the conversation to drive that DiGard car at one point BUT he looked to rough...
Why would I pay to see a Nascar street race when you can only see what is in front of you. It's like Indy without the office buildings. At least at Indy your surrounded by a racing environment. I'll totally skip the street race weekend.
