Dale Jr. Download: Darrell Waltrip Nearly Replaced by an Olympic Gold Medalist?!

- Опубліковано 18 лис 2020
- Darrell Waltrip explains his tumultuous partnership with DiGard racing and nearly being replaced by Bruce Jenner. Plus, DW discusses why drivers back in the '70s and 80's didn't want teammates. His Junior Johnson racing teammate Neil Bonnett was awarded the win after a controversial yellow-flag pass which led to Johnson protesting his own team! DW tells the story.

There is a great story in D.W.'s book about when he arrived at Junior Johnson's racing team. Junior expected his drivers to all work on the cars and not just sit around and be prima donnas so, he pointed to a stack of tires mounted on wheels and told D.W. to "Bounce them tars." So, He went out there to the stack and took each mounted tire and bounced it on the ground a few times and stacked it up and got another one. Eventually Junior came out and asked: "Son, what the hell are you doing?" D.W. told him he was bouncing the tires like he told him to. Junior shook his head and pointed to the tire balancing machine and told D.W. to "bounce them tars." (Meaning balance them tires) I cracked up when I read that.
and the tires started rolling down the hill too. I read the same thing and laughed my but off!! probably funniest part of the book.
@@hotrodhomefree Exactly right. Poor Junior was probably like....what the hell is wrong with this guy?
It’s an amazing story
Junior Johnson, D.W. and some mounted Tires, rolled, in, to a Bar. The Bouncer said "Get white out of here, mounted Tars! Else, i will black out your i's! I'm tard of you!" (Get it? They were "Hoosier" Tars.) Ed t: My i was Whited out.
I keep coming back to watch these. I could listen to DW tell these stories all day.
I can listen to Darrell all day, he can tell the best stories.
*AH NO MAN, YOU A KIDDIN ME*
Yessir all day long
He's like a grandfather; He's got all sorts of wacky stories, he's kind and patient, and he's always making dad jokes

We truly need to appreciate the “old” school guys while we can because when they are gone some of the best stories in NASCAR history will be gone with them. DW was definitely not one of my favorites being a 3 fan but really appreciate his personality and passion for the sport, great interview!!
There is more to this interview. I saw another part on TV a couple of days ago, so I still don't know if I've seen the entire interview. Dale Jr. is doing a GREAT job with these interviews. Also his show on the Peacock channel called "Lost Speedways" is awesome. I don't get the Peacock channel but I've seen about 5 eps on NBCSN.
@@bigelile07 Go to Dale Jrs other UA-cam channel at Dirty Mo Media and you can watch the full length interview. They posted it as a whole and then also just did segments of different topics so they can have more videos to get more views but the whole interview is on there I watched it before.
@@bigelile07 You don't get the Peacock channel? Maybe, you should throw a Helmet, at "The Peacock Channel," "smoke 14." Just for fun..........

Lol. Don't get it and never even heard of it until Jr.'s show.
Great post Jim, although as a kid that Mountain Dew car looked sweet.
Nobody is perfect, but Darrell is a great announcer and ambassador for Nascar. Hes from the old school generation that was IMO the best era the sport ever had.
I also will always remember his pre race speech at Rockingham after Dale Sr. died. He was magnificent that day. For a good ole boy, hes a great speaker.
THIS is a prime example of why I love this podcast: the amazing ( and funny ) true stories from retired veteran greats like DW. It's literally priceless. Stuff most of us would've never known about otherwise.
My dad and I started going to the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in 1970. I believe DW had moved down the year before. I saw him win a race on his roof. After several undefeated weeks I saw Dave Marcus beat DW in a match race. I saw him win his first Cup race in Nashville. So many great memories...
My dad and I went to Nashville once. It would have been right around 78 or 79, maybe 80. DW was still in the 88 and unfortunately had problems and finished way in the back. I can barely remember it except for just being so disappointed that I didn't get to see him running up front. Made up for it the next few years by getting to see him win a whole lot of races at Richmond and Martinsville in the 11.
Good chit
I’m with Jr. The Fairgrounds was a great place to see a race. It wasn’t bad to see a concert either. My Uncle that got us into the races when we were kids also got me a backstage pass for ZZ Top and The Band too. Miss you Uncle Cheatem. He’d had loved them racing Cup cars at the Fairgrounds again.
I remember watching Jr. race on Saturday nights at the fairgrounds in the early 90’s
@@Bill_N_ATX Now you’ve opened another memory box. July 4, 1976 I saw Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Johnny and Edgar Winter at the Fairgrounds. I’d just started driving.
I love listening to DW talk about his early days. You guys need to get Bobby Allison on while he's still around.
Get Red Farmer...fly him up when he’s not racing
Wasn’t he on?
Yeah I could have sworn Red Farmer was on already.
@@jamessimms415 he was on fucktooth
Kyle Petty had both Allison brothers on his show, Dale Jr should do the same!
Here's the person who should have already been on the show,
i love this! Can't get enough of D.W. i wish he was still calling race's
me too
He'll probably come back for a race or two. In my opinion he should be up in the booth calling the all star race every year.
@@zenon459I like the sound of that good idea! Or at least Darlington for throwback weekend they have had Ken Squier David Hobbs and ned Jarrett as throwback announcers in the booth, so I would love to see Darrell Waltrip as a throwback announcer!!
@@johnnydobbs1399 he could do both. I think once retirement from the booth simmers down in a couple of years, he might get that itch to scream "*OH NO MAN*" at some cars on track.
Me too !
Professor Dale knows about everything theres to know about everyone in the Nascar scene, even better as the drivers themselves :P
You should get him to teach you English.

Dale, what yall are doing here with these shows to capture these legends stories being shared and told via the Podcasts and UA-cam, will become historic and treasured by so many that weren't around during the times these great legends raced! Definitely a wise move brother!
I can see children that aren't even born yet, one day will be listening to these stories being shared! Epic that yall are doing what you and the crew are doing to preserve all these legends stories! Great visionary whoever came up with the idea to create the platform, I can only imagine it had to be you Dale? Whoever it was is irrelevant at the end of the day, yet what yall are creating/doing here on Dirty Mo Media will be cherished forever by millions! Thank you for all you all do there at DMM!
ps - Yall need to get on as many of the retired older legends on that you can get on, while you can still get them on, before they checkout!
Could listen to Harry Gant and DW stories all day.
A movie about the old time nascar drivers would hit the top of the movie charts
I could listen to Darrell and his brother Micheal all day long. What a couple of good natured men. Funny, good story telling, god bless them both.
Bruce Jenner was a massive racer and huge aviation fan. If he drove a stock car in the 80s, he might still be a Bruce.
Who else could listen to DW tell stories for 10 hours a day?
I would be eating popcorn.
Absolutely- yes
Just listened to part 2 man it brings tears to my eyes to hear DW and the guy's talk old times. The legends get togethers are unbelievable to hear the old timers. Love the job Jr and Mike are doing 👍
There are few things sweeter than Darryl telling Dale Jr a story about 1980. I've listened to this a few times and I don't get tired of it. UA-cam keep on recommending it.
You never want to drive for Penske. Those trucks don't run worth a damn.
Does the Driver have to pay for Upgrades, in Lieu of Steep Grades? or vice versa
WoW... these are awesome stories! I could sit and listen to them for hours!!!
Darrell Waltrip is one of the best interviews you have had. You gotta love the guy.
DW was the best guest ever on JR's show.
DW is a treasure and I love Jr....he knows his history and I wished he was still wheeling it.
Best episode yet! I became a NASCAR fan when your dad was racing Rusty , Awesome Bill , and DW ! I watched cup in the Petty , B.Allison, Yarborough days but these guys were my era. Love you DW! Hey Dale, keep doing what you are doing!
have always enjoyed watching and listening to DW, love the stories...
The best DW interview!! And the of the Download series!!!
Real DW > TV DW.
I just can't get enough of DW stories. ❤
DW should still be in the booth
Paul Newman was a multi-time SCCA national champion sports car racer for the Nissan factory team (he also won IMSA races driving for them). Bruce Jenner won a number of sports car races driving for the Ford factory team.
For Junebug's lil' sidekick's edification, Paul Newman was a great race car driver.
Paul was a Championship Racer sidekick info
let's not get carried away, newman drove cars, was about it. movie stars drove cars, that was about it.
@@rickstclair2217 As a driver Paul Newman won four SCCA National Championships, 24 Hours of Daytona, took true second at Le Mans (winning his class) and won multiple professional Trans Am races.
@jollyjakelovell4787 he was the best driver of the movie stars, could afford the best equipment in his class as well.
Absolutely love it!!! We want more DW!! @DirtyMoMedia @DaleJr
Having been away from modern NASCAR for a decade, or two. I find the back stories far more interesting than the races themselves. It does't hurt that DW is the story teller, or that Dale Jr. can back him up with his encyclopedic
/historic recall of events. Great interview overall.... I will be watching more, for sure.
Never liked DW until this podcast. He’d never shut up during a race cast...drove me nuts. But to hear all his stories, he is finally worth listening to. New respect.
@Luke Jameson I didnt miss him one bit
So did tony stewart. Often you miss people that talk too much when they're not there anymore
He was insufferable in the broadcast booth.
Am I the only one who loved hearing DW in the booth?
I Love D DubYa and He was the best broadcaster too
Only thing D DubYa ever did wrong was “ BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY!!!! “
Please keep having the old timers come on!!!! I could listen to DW for hours!!!!
Love all the interviews by Dale Jr. and his team! Great work and memories! I do remember the driver that wrecked, and the nitrous bottle fell out of the roll cage onto the ground was D.K. Ulrich. It happened in the late 70’s at Darlington.
DW was the inspiration for Stroker Ace!
Technically, he wasn't. Stroker Ace was adapted from a 1973 novel called Stand on It. Although I wouldn't be surprised if DiGard and DWs' antics at the time is what helped the movie get green lit, lol. 🙂
Hello Dale and DW great show I always enjoy listening to DW talking about the past. Wishing all of you well and Happy Thanksgiving Take Care
DW is a national treasure. He tells the stories so well.
I want to know how Dale Jr knows so much about the early days? Serious question
Both Dale and Kelly were hanging around the track when they were kids after Ralph had passed.
I've been waiting for DW to come on here. Guy has a ton of awesome stories I could listen to him talk all day
Watching Darrel and Dale talk you can see the bond they have and it’s absolutely beautiful
Awesome interview guys. I was at Nashville that night in the pits.. I still have the photos both signed for me that day. I think that was one of the most serious races i ever saw that whole weekend. The after show was even more interesting, right D.W.? lol.. Me and Morgan had a pow wow about it all at the after party.. Rite on Dirty Mo Crew !! Stay safe out there.. "Chief"......
I love DW, this has got to be my favorite guest he's had.
Never can get enough of DW he is a gem that can never be equaled. Hats off to Junior to get him on the program
Respect to DW! Class guy
These old school storys are just great to listen too.
"he was a moonshiner" man. My grandpa's generation was wildddddd
Great stories as usual . Classic stuff !!!!!
Just happened across your channel and I am already a fan! DW is one of the most interesting personalities ever from racing and actually from most sports. I have subscribed and will follow. NASCAR is one of the most intriguing sports ever and it's Born in the USA! THANKS Dale!
I could sit and listen to DW stories for hours while have a few cold ones. He's an amazing storyteller.
Doesn’t get any better than story telling with DW, great sense of humor.
My gosh, does Jr. know his history or what?!
GREAT SHOW
How I have missed this episode is beyond me. Great to hear the history from DW.
Better late than never!
Every episode is awsome, geting to know the drivers personally helps promote the sport big time.
I met Robert Yates in traffic outside of Pocono back in 2004. (no shag carpet) What a class act.
These stories are PRECIOUS PRICELESS TREASURED BLESSINGS and when these awesome older driver's are gone, these stories become PRECIOUS PRICELESS TREASURED MEMORIES!!! PLEASE do more of these because these stories are what made Nascar competitive and made it an AWESOME MUST WATCH SPORT!!!Unlike now, Nascar has lost it's way and there's probably only one or two driver's that could drive a full race without those stupid stages!!! Keep up the great work Dale 💞🤗💞🙏🙏🙏
Great interview, awesome to hear an ol’KY boy talk success along with his journey getting there.
Great interview
Love DW, Thanks Jr!
Absolutely loved this interview with DW. Dale Jr., Mike, Leah and Matt did a great job. I really enjoy it when they interview some of the old school drivers and get into some NASCAR history. Dale Jr. could write a book on NASCAR history. His Lost Speedway show is fantastic. Hope they do more seasons of that show.
Great stories!
We need a DW movie. From his beginnings to his win in the Daytona 500.
If you liked these interviews with DW you need to read his book. It's a great read. If I remember correctly it's titled Sundays Will Never Be The Same.

Mike, there have been some great guests, some of my favorites.Never really liked DW. But this might be the best episode ever!Great job! Keep them
coming this will be your and Jr's legacy.
I Respect ol D.W. more after this, nice interview!
Best guest Dale has had, can't wait for part 2
They ought to pull Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough in with DW in a round table to go back and forth in stories! Man o man these are good! DW knows everybody by name ever associated with racing, just love it! Dale Jr should have DW back every month for interviews and stories... today’s drivers caught up in their celebrity, mansions, millions, will never have these kinds of stories to share.
I grew up in the late 80's/early 90's NASCAR era and I always remember DW as this solid race driver who always did the funny/goofy interviews before/after the race. Imagine my shock when my Dad came through and told me that very same guy used to be one of the most hated drivers in NASCAR in the 70's and early 80's. I couldn't believe it. Just for the record: My Dad was a Bobby Allison (later Davey Allison) fan.
Great explanation re special parts and a teammate. Same thing in Indy Car at the time - the Bobby Unser philosophy.
Bruce Jenner wasn't just a gold medalist. He was an accomplished IMSA driver with 18 podiums and 2 wins in a relatively short 10 year span.
Hell yeah. Switched gears quicker than he switched genders.
2 wins in 10 years is trash
Would this be considered dead naming? Bullshit if it was

Lol, great interview!!
Neil Bonnett was a good guy and good driver.
DW, the Man!
I love listening to ol Jaws talk lol. DW is hell of a story teller. I love listening to all these old stories.
What is really impressive about this show is the enormous amount of research that is done. It's the only similar show that I will watch from beginning to end. because it is so interesting.
A year later, this is still so good.
Always loved DW!
I would love to just sit with Waltrip and listen to some of the old racing stories he knows that no one has told before. I’m sure that could be a big selling book. Waltrip’s secrets of NASCAR 😂
Cool video 👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
I love these stories about the NASCAR of yesteryear. I can listen to this guy all day
Man!! I love me some DW. I sure miss him on t.v.
In that Nashville race I seem to remember Bobby Allison crossing the finish line going through the pits in reverse and the front end of his car was spewing huge flames from under the hood. It may not be that race but it did happen and I'll never forget that.
This was just fantastic they talk my talk very easy to understand. You guy's great job Dale
Best episode ever, dw is the best.
DW's stories are absolute GOLD
How can you not like ole D.W.?
There have been some great interviews on this show, but this is hands down the best episode. DW telling his stories, and DJ telling his, distracted me from doing any work because I was riveted to what was going on.
Idk listening to sr's mom was awesome
More DW Please!
What most people don't know is that both Newman and Jenner were racing in IMSA and SCCA, and Newman was GOOD. Jenner was a pretty good driver too.
i stopped watching racing years ago but i loved every second of this
Love this interview, curious if Darrell's experience with the Digard contract is what gave them the idea for the movie Stroker Ace?
Just echoing what someone else said, I can listen to DW tell stories all day, Especially with Junior asking all kinds of racing questions.
One of the best interviews on Dirty Mo. Stories by DW and historical facts by Jr. DW is always entertaining. Didn’t like him on the track, but always added colour.
These are incredible. Thank you Dale Jr.
Hey...my cousin Darrell Bryant was the crew chief for the 88 Gatorade car when Geoff Bodine drove it. By the way, because of Darrell, I was able to meet a lot of my hero drivers when they came to Riverside, CA, and you were one of them, D.W. I miss those days, man. I also used to race go karts at a place called Indian Dunes, just a little bit north from Magic Mountain off of the 126. I would race on the dirt oval that Walt James built, and after my races, I would walk up to the pavement track at the same facility and watch Bruce Jenner race go karts on that track. Bruce was pretty darn good from what I could tell, so him being a potential for getting into that NASCAR ride may not have been that much of a stretch.
These two D Dub & Jr. seem to be 2 of these absolute realest & down to earth superstar legends that have ever lived.
They’re two I have yet to meet but from everything I can see they appear to be the real real.
They’re legit people and Legends.
Jr refers to Mr H as Dad! So sweet. Great show!!
I miss DW on TV, or anywhere.
I remember seeing DW & Bobby Allison run at Colorado Springs Internaional Speedway in 83. What a good ol Friday night short track night that was. If memory serves DW won that night I was 13 at the time.
This is why nascar was great back in the day now it’s just to clean an neat but great interview with DW he’s a great storyteller thanks J
