I love how seriously you take the request to talk about a topic. You do really good preparation and you come at the topic appreciating how complex it might be. No simplistic, one size fits all recommendations from Aly!
EXCELLENT! Thank you, Aly 🤩 This pixie video went BEYOND! I appreciate all the theory that explained why certain elements of hairstyles work and don't too! Lots of "Aha"! moments in this one for me. ❤❤❤
Great video! I've been rocking pixie my whole life basically. So much of what you are saying makes sense. I can't pull off certain style of clothes because the pixie looks totally off.
So educational. Great content. I was going to shorten my pixie cut because i am going dye freee but i notice your advice on covering the ears and keep it longer on the front. I think am flamboyant natural. And its better to cut every month one centimeter rather than a big shop. I hve been washing you for years. Thank you again for all the advices. Priceless.
Alyona, your outlook on fashion and style is so impeccable! I think I finally start to see what suits me and what does not so much better. It's also the way you see everyone, it's so beautiful. Thank you for what you do!
I got a pixie cut a year and a half ago and I love it. I am told I look like a pixie or like Audrey Hepburn. It has definitely changed the clothes that look right on me. I have a very gamine face and the cut accentuates it, so certain things I used to wear just look a little bit odd now. This was a great video!
This is the most educational pixie video I have ever seen. I love how you never made any face shape feel like they are not suited to a pixie or made them feel bad about how their face is shaped.
One huge thing to consider before getting a pixie cut is whether it suits your lifestyle. Because it requires styling and washing your hair more often that when it's long. So make sure you have the time for this. And second, a few iconic pixie women: 1. Michelle Williams, mentioned in the video. When she had the pixie all her red carpet looks were on point. Her stylist understood the assignment 100%. She was all perfect ❤ 2. Eddie Sedgwick - iconic in every way. And she mixed short pixie with full glam and playfulness. 3. Goldie Hawn in the begging of her acting career. She had this amazing pixie/shag. It looked fantastic!
I disagree that a pixie always takes more time to style. I just think women with long hair have lower standards for how it should look and are more apt to put it up on a bad hair day. Men with short hair don't complain about it taking too long to style.
I love the whole history you gave! It’s so cool to see all the versions of pixies and short hair over the decades. I wore a pixie for over 10 years, grew it out to a bob over the last year then went back to a pixie a couple weeks ago. Pixie cuts are just my thing. 😂
Whenever I chop my hair off, I wear more edgy, sleek, and sexy clothes. Nothing super feminine, sweet, or even along the lines of boho. I also tell women if they need inspiration on how to dress with short hair, I tell them to look at pics Halle Berry, she’s a good reference for dressing with a pixie.
I'm a Soft Dramatic with Romantic essence and I'm about a year into growing out a buzzcut. Cool to see an explanation behind why a curly fade fits my outfits and lines so well! Good combination of elongation of the face/head and soft curls on top.
Gosh this was so amazingly detailed! I loved how you went into the history of the pixie and covered all the different types of pixie. I’d love a similar vid on long hair! Long hair seems the default these days and I’d love to put a language to what effect it has on the features specifically
I loved having a pixie cut, especially in my 40’s, it made me look ten years younger in my face. Unfortunately, it didn’t suit my preferred fashion style aesthetics- the relaxed, flowing boho aesthetics- typical for Soft Natural body types. In a pixie cut, I felt like I had to dress “gamine style” (not me at all) or masculine, sleek lines of Dramatic or Classic clean minimalist styles. I let my grey hair grow out naturally during the pandemic and when I re-emerged, I asked people what they thought. Most answered they loved it. So even in my mid sixties, with salt & pepper coloring, longer, shaggy hair suits my particular fashion style more. I dress stylishly, younger than most people my age and I usually get complimented every time I am out in public. Looking forward to the day I might go back to pixie cut...maybe in my nineties?😂
I forgot about Meg Ryan's hair! That was iconic. Toni Braxton, Anita Baker, Queen Pen and MC Lyte were my pixie inspirations. Halfway in and anticipating some shots of Mrs Beckham..
I LOVED my Pixie for years! I’m not a small woman, but I had the BEST hairdresser, and she made me look great. It also allowed me to cut off all the old color. I had been coloring most or all of my adult life. (We had some EPIC FAILS, too!) So now I’m letting it grow again, and working with my natural color and texture. So far, so good! Still love a Pixie! Great video, Aly, as always! ♥️
This was so much fun! I really like pixie hairstyles for women. I think it´s unusual and therefore I love it! SO many especially young women have long hair. And I think most of the time it´s boring. I myself tried a pixie like hairstyle many years ago because I always adored Audrey Tautou´s Pixie! Michelle Williams looks great with it, too. But I was disappointed. Now - and mostly due to your videos - I know why. I´m SN and although I have curly hair which I love - this hairstyle was too short for me - overall and around the ears. But I can very much appreciate Pixie´s on other women. BTW: What do you say to the theory that shorter hair on mature women distracts from the sagging jawline and draws the attention to the upper part of the face. I find it very interesting and agree. Not for all of course.
Wonderful, intelligent information. Your coverage of style through the decades was very helpful to assist us in identifying if you are stuck in a time warp.
Excellent video, thank you Ally! I’ve noticed that long flowy dresses don’t suit me if I’m wearing my hair short (I’ve a dry body and face) and your explanation was very insightful.
I have an appointment, in the morning, to cut my pixie hair. After watching this, I'm going to grow it out a bit and cover my ears. I can really see the difference it will make. Thanks, Aly.
Amazing, Aly! You always offer very detailed and unique insight into these topics. When I had a pixie I felt most confortable with more dry youthful styles indeed. Something didn't feel quite right when I tried long and flowy dresses for example. It seemed like my head was floating, lol.
I have tried so many different hair styles by now and the first thing I noticed was the need to adjust the way I dressed accordingly. There might be hairstyles that are more forgiving but those I liked the most definitely needed matching clothes. I do wear a pixie myself (super short nape area, open ears, slightly longer and textured on top, side swept bangs, styled very piecy and in a uniform, very light blonde color) and keep coming back to that exact hairstyle all the time. I've had different variations of a pixie and this one is the one that I love the most, especially combined with the way I prefer to wear my make up and the clothes I prefer to wear. Whenever I grow my hair into a softer, longer version of a pixie, I feel like my clothes don't work out anymore and I hate that. I actually matched my hair to my wardrobe, not the other way around and that might be why I keep coming back to this hairstyle. I also get a lot of compliments for this hairstyle from many different types of people (which doesn't really matter to me but I guess that means it actually looks good on me and not that I just think it looks good). I also prefer the styling process of this hairstyle over any other hairstyle I ever had. It is both convenient and impactful.
I remember clothes in the 90s being loud too. Remember the TV show, In Living color where SO many stars became famous? The dancers and the actors wore so much color. Especially that mustard color. United color or Benetton and the clothing store, Merry-go-Round.
Thank you for this insightful video! I love your understanding of lines and structure. Though I still have absolutely no idea regarding my personal Kibbe ID 😅 I recently got a big chop (bust lenght to pixie, almost Mia Farrow cut) and love this style on me, love how it compliments my face. I feel like it makes me look more gamine, though as I said, I have no idea if I’m actually this type. Style wise, I see that I have to rethink some outfit choices. Also my hair appears darker now that it’s short, creating stronger contrast with my light skin. That’s all very interesting to notice. Looking forward to your upcoming pixie videos, I definitely feel like no one covers this subject so well ❤️
Slight correction! Those pictures of Audrey Hepburn are from the earlier/mid 50’s! Not 60’s. She actually sported both “longer” (think Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and shorter styles (more “mod” styles) in the 60’s. 🥰🙏✨🦋
Also. I am a Kibbe FN and I always, always wear my hair in a bun. Either high or low., smooth or messy. I have had bob haircuts many times, and they look good, but I always return to this hairstyle. It fits me. But I know the recommendations for my type call for hair with volume and movement and asymmetry. I’d love to see you talk about updos for FNs.
Very educational video! Lately, I have been thinking about getting a pixie cut to look more mature and accentuate my round baby face. Watching this video makes me realize I have a lot more to consider wholistically about my appearance and image before I make such a drastic choice, like a pixie cut. Right now, my fashion and style need a lot of work. So I am going to take it one step at a time😅
i had a pixie cut from a hairdresser she cut it like 1980 and made my back of the head flat looking very noticeable. Never again lol. I was crying for 2 weeks ...pick a good hairdresser otherwise it can go ugly fast
Interesting that you say that more prominent jawline will not be that suitable for a pixie. There's a different point of view that is based on the idea of "facial thirds" and when the lower third is more prominent a very short hairstyle like a pixie will actually balance out your features by drawing attention to the upper third area. I have a very short pixie cut with a fade in the back and a skin fade on the sides. The top and crown area is short and a bit longer, yet it compliments the rest of the cut. The key is finding a hair stylist who will listen and work with you. This was a long journey for me until I met my current stylist 10 years ago. My hair was cut gradually shorter in the last 10 years, and I feel confident, beautiful and amazing when I leave his chair.
Just a correction on Mia Farrow's hair, she said she cuts it first herself with a pair of fingernail scissors, then Paramount got Vidal Sassoon to do a trim for a photo shoot :)
I’m a soft dramatic but I’ve had to go for a pixie because of health issues - I just can’t keep things looking tidy enough with my natural wavy texture when it’s long. I kept the top longer and have it wavy or curled so it’s softer, and the back and sides shorter so it looks tidy without any input. (Also I have glasses so if I have longer sides the glasses make them stick up and it looks messy!)
I've had long hair all my life. I have always taken good care of it and had really thick and straight hair. I usually never use heat on my hair or color it. I had bleached my hair one time in my life because my natrual haircolor is brown and I colored it black. About 6 months later I changed my mind and bleached it to go back to my natrual color. After doing it by myself, using bleach, blue schampo and brown color. It still had some red tones in it. I waited 11 months to bleach it again to try to get rid of the red tones. This was 2 weeks ago. I completly ruined my hair. It burned off about 1-2 dm from my scalp, luckily an amazing hairdresser saved my hair but he had to cut it into a pixie cut. I'm still sad, I don't feel comfortable or like myself in this hairstyle but I try to get used to it. I've watched alot of videos similar to this and pictures to get inspiration. I have recieved alot of kind comments and people say I look beautiful. I've been told it really fits my oval face shape and I should keep it short but idk..right now I'm still getting used to it. **Learning lesson, never bleach your hair at home because you never know if it will get ruined even though you have good hair and take very good care of it.
Honestly, I’m more confused than ever. I’ve had a very short pixie cut and loved it, but am now growing it out, and I feel it just doesn’t suit me as well. I’m tall and curvy (SD), so it shouldn’t work, but I have very small and pointed features with a fleshier face, so that’s a mixed bag. I also have super curly hair that should work better longer, but just ends up looking messy. 😂. Maybe it’s because my vibe is a bit edgy boho, and the pixie cut brings in more edge?
I have had a short haircut. But like I look effing gorgeous but this horrible little pixie still in my head keeps saying, buy a wig. Or wear a man's suit. Wear a hoodie with tight trackies, Addidas, and a pair of nike air jordans. Wear men's dress shirts. Lose my belly and NEVER wear a long dress. Just sex shop clothing. And a bloody severe corset. Become a Lesbian. Men won't want to be with me. 😢 sad world. Love long hair, but it's always a nightmare to style and it looks shit on fat women, actually. That's a fact ❤️
This was so interesting ❤ I am a small soft natural with very round cheeks, a pixie would be a disaster on me. But i love a beautiful pixie on a gamine woman
I loved this video & am a pure gamine (just as your mom was). I have worn a pixie style since the 80’s (I am 72) as prior wore a ponytail to teach fitness or French braid while working in the hospital. When I cut it all off, no one knew, as my hair was always off my face anyway 😂
I think it's mostly because Alyona is Russian and the Karen cut boom was mostly in the 2000s here while Karen thing seems like a newer phenomenon (at least the haircut) and was originated and popularised in the USA more recently
I love how seriously you take the request to talk about a topic. You do really good preparation and you come at the topic appreciating how complex it might be. No simplistic, one size fits all recommendations from Aly!

i have a pixie since years and love it, i was in the pixie club since i saw mia farrow in rosemarys baby the first time, greetings from switzerland
Your vid came out exactly when I wanted to cut my hair drastically! I have more understanding now and feel less numb about it.
Whenever I chop my hair off, I wear more edgy, sleek, and sexy clothes. Nothing super feminine, sweet, or even along the lines of boho. Wonderful, intelligent information. Your coverage of style through the decades was very helpful to assist us in identifying if you are stuck in a time warp.
I noticed that theatrical románticas look good with pixie cuts too. Can you elaborate on this more
Excellent video, thank you Ally! I’ve noticed that long flowy dresses don’t suit me if I’m wearing my hair short (I’ve a dry body and face) and your explanation was very insightful.
Please please do also long hair/and body types!😊

I've recently found channel. Your contents are great. Please make a video about how to fix damaged hair. Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩❤.
Very informative thank you aly 😻
I would love to see a video about jeans cuts on different body types and what is best for each one 🙏🏼
Pixie looks good only if you have great jawline, without double chin or turtle neck.
But ironically it's mostly those women with "voluminous" faces and bodies who wear pixies... horrible
@@tessltaekook8501wow
Men don't need to worry about their jawline when choosing a haircut. Sigh
What a walk down memory lane 🤣🤣! Thank you for the great content
i wish i had that dry face that you talked about i love pixie so much, but definitely would not fit my face
I love your philosophy 🙏🏻😉❤️🇬🇧xxxxx
Amazing, Aly! You always offer very detailed and unique insight into these topics.
When I had a pixie I felt most confortable with more dry youthful styles indeed. Something didn't feel quite right when I tried long and flowy dresses for example. It seemed like my head was floating, lol.
Great video - thank you!! Can’t wait for the next pixie video too!!
I have tried so many different hair styles by now and the first thing I noticed was the need to adjust the way I dressed accordingly. Thank you for this insightful video! I love your understanding of lines and structure. Slight correction! Those pictures of Audrey Hepburn are from the earlier/mid 50’s! Not 60’s. She actually sported both “longer” (think Breakfast at Tiffany’s) and shorter styles (more “mod” styles) in the 60’s. 🥰🙏✨🦋

Watching this video makes me realize I have a lot more to consider wholistically about my appearance and image before I make such a drastic choice, like a pixie cut. That is like finding a needle in a haystack🤔
Interesting that you say that more prominent jawline will not be that suitable for a pixie. There's a different point of view that is based on the idea of "facial thirds" and when the lower third is more prominent a very short hairstyle like a pixie will actually balance out your features by drawing attention to the upper third area. I think this is a concept used in Asian aesthetics like Korea, Japan and China, although I think artists also know about this concept. There's not that much info in English about it but you can check out Style Me Jen as she does cover the topic quite a bit.

I think SD can look so luscious with short hair, esp when its wavy. ala Joan from Mad Men!
Best information ever, many thanks😘

I think it's mostly because Alyona is Russian and the Karen cut boom was mostly in the 2000s here while Karen thing seems like a newer phenomenon (at least the haircut) and was originated and popularised in the USA more recently
It’s an American joke tbh
00:50 Very good..

Who is suitable for dyeing her hair red?
Nothing matters... Are you comfortable in a haircut or not.... that's all it matters..
Winona is spelled wea-no-na, not why-no-na. Sorry it hurt me a bit :D But I love your videos!
