The modern practice of manufacturers creating an 'OE tyre' is an interesting one that's important to note... but I still await a review of an off-the-shelf version we could fit to our own various cars.
I don’t expect it will take too long. How long did it take before the BMW spec 4s* was available everywhere? I recently replaced my 4s* expecting a standard version but was happily surprised when the 4s* was fitted.
Hardly modern, been around for over 25 years and mainstream for nearly as long , all the manufacturers develop specific versions of tyres for their car models and even across models can be different i.e. a 3 series BMW can have a different version of the same tyre type and size to the 5 series.
At this point, this shouldn't be called a Michelin Pilot Sport S 5. It should be called Michelin Pilot Sport AMG GT. We've seen time and time again these OE specific tires are vastly different from the generic tires that they share the same model name with.
I love the fact you’ve spent hours of gathering information and material, I can’t quite picture how long it took and you still had to make 18 minute video. I wish there was this much detailed videos online on everything I ever want to google :D

I don't have a sports car and will not buy these tires until I do, but I love watching your videos for the information and production value. Also, you/this channel gave me the info to choose my current tire the Michelin Crossclimate 2 and previously the CC Suv.
@@2seep Probably not as well, since it's been designed for heavy cars. Unfortunately. Several car developers have said that it's hard to get good driving feel into their supercars due to the tires making it almost impossible. They've been designed to remove all feel.
It really seems like the new tires are very car specific. Tire technology is so good now that the only way to improve on it is to make a tire that is extremely specific to one vehicle. Is that why we are only seeing the new PSS5 as original equipment now? There don’t seem to be any generic PSS5 tires available in the US. That is great for new cars but doesn’t really help us for older cars. However, those PSS5 tires do seem quite exceptional on this vehicle.
There's no official reason as to why there's no aftermarket version of the PSS5 yet, my unofficial theory is they wanted to bring out a tyre with a big gap to the competition, and the SC7 moved the competition on so they've been working on further improvements. I'm confident when the PSS5 is out in aftermarket it will be something special and worth the wait.
I agree. I would also love to see the PSS 5 against the P Zero R. I anticipate these 2 tyres would be the top 2 on the market, that is when the PSS 5 finally comes to the aftermarket. They both have taken quite a while to be launched, so I hope the wait will be worth it. My guess is the P Zero R might have a slight edge in the dry, the PSS 5 a slight edge in the wet. LOL.
I like the emphasis on “soft” driving. Because I live in the US Appalachian mountains, I get to engage in, ahem, spirited driving. But 75% of my driving is just getting somewhere. Thanks.
When you add in that alongside the Tyre/Chassis/Steering tuning ( with presumably mulitple damper setttings) the ABS/TCS Stability control system is being tuned, the engine tune is being developed , the gear box tune is being developed, and they are all interlinked when it becomes how the end customer perceives the car the levels of development complexity go up exponentially - and this is just for a single model . Look again at a higher volume model with multiple engines gear boxes, brake variants, FWD and AWD etc, and the development matrix hit's a whole other level.
Thanks for touching on the wear resistance. That's one of the things I really like about my Pilot Sport 4S and Pilot Sport 5 tyres - they last a long time. I tend to replace them when they start getting a little too hard, rather than worn out or (like some of the competition) they start falling apart.
So this isn't the Pilot Sport S 5 that any of us are going to buy, it's the very specific OEM tyre for a 160 grand 2 ton Mercedes? Nothing wrong with that, but I'll wait for your undoubtedly excellent review of the one we will actually be buying and using.
I am looking forward to seeing the UUHP segment super test as and when you do it. I’m very keen to see if your assessment of Falken’s RS820 is similar to mine as I’ve taken the plunge and had a set fitted to my car. (Very happy with them). Though based on this “early days” review of the PSS5, I think they need to hurry up and come to the mainstream 👀

So as I'm due for new tyres, is it worth the upgrade from the Spport 4 S "N" on my Porsche 911 to this new Sport 5 S? Or is this more dialed in for the AMG and I should wait until there are Porsche 911 "N" versions of the Sport 5 S released?
Why bother waiting? Just buy from another manufacturer if Michelin don't want to sell to the aftermarket (I went with Continental). Michelin must be making a lot of money from these OEM deals to justify delaying the aftermarket standard product
Figured this review was near when I saw the star marked version of these tires on the new M5. Still awesome to get your thoughts on this, cant wait for you to test the star marked tires again hopefully!
Imagine how frustrating it is for an engineer to go to this length for development's sake, and then immediately see owners claim "they just put the mark on the tire so they can charge more for the same thing"
It really probably isn't much of an engineering decision at all but a marketing one. Would love to see laptimes comparing the two instead of just "HEY MAN ENGINEERS MADE IT SO IT MUST BE THAT MUCH BETTER". And a blind test

Matt, regarding the death bolt, if you snap head of the bolt, you can then remove the nut and keep adding washers spacers to pull the rest through. It’s not bad once you get the idea of what I said
To be honest I think the Pilot Sport S5 aftermarket version will take at least a year to be released for the aftermarket. I see in EU Michelin have released new sizes in the Pilot Sport 4S, the became available in M140i/M240i sizes fellow owners please take note :) ! So I think they will exploit the 4S even more as it still highly wanted and still an amazing tyre. I guess it takes effort to relocate production lines etc so Im guessing they will produce them for longer to just a couple of months.. Maybe they will use the knowlegde they used for the OEM tyres more and use it more in the aftermarket tyres and release a banger of tyre when they feel ready. So good to see this review, given that both AMG and Aston Martin have used Michelin to design a tyre (S5) for their new models (Aston DB12 and new Vantage), the Aston tyres come marked AML. I would love to see a comparison test of the new Vantage on its S5 tyres to this AMG GT to gauge the differences. The 4S is still a very good tyre and for other Aston owners, it has been the go-to product when new tyres are needed.
Can't wait to see the Pilot Sport 5 vs Pilot Sport S5 video. Would love to see how they compare and if it's similar to how close the Pilot Sport 4 and the Pilot Sport 4S were👍
If the steering feel is improved over the PS4S then I might just have to jump from the Goodyear F1 SS. On another note, I’d love to see your thoughts on the AD09. Another mega track/UUHP test is always a great watch!
Thanks, Jon, for keeping us informed on a tire that I'm hoping will be a good successor to the PS4S. This tire looks as if it would probably be good for a car like mine, a NA 390 hp 3200 lb FM RWD 6MT sports coupe. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if Michelin will have sizes available for the mass market before I need to get new tires, so I guess I'll soldier on with the 4S.
Early review on Michelin Pilot Sport S5. specifically made for certain vehicles. As for large market consumer market, give it 2 or 3 more years. For all you warm-hot and seasonably Dry folks, get the Pilot Sport S4 it still does not disappoint in Summer -Dry performance.

I’ve been waiting for a review of the all new S5 and your reporting did not disappoint 👊 However having recently purchased a Fresh set of 19inch 4S’s for my 05 E46 M3 I was heavily disappointed that these S5’s are still not available on the market 😬 I mean didn’t Michelin announce the development of the S5’s 2 years ago? What is taking so long?
Not a big fan of tyres highly tuned for a aspecific car. What happens in a few years when the car is a bit older and the tyre is NLA? Better to tune the car to work well with a reasonable range of tyres.
There will be M02, so that’ll be almost a decade! By the, say fourth owner, most owners will no longer go to the expense. That’s also a decade of further tyre development. So there will likely be pilot sport 6, or 7 by then..
every OE development is secured by a contract assuring the supply of the tire all along the production of the car + a certain period of "continuity of service", no worry about that.

Super excited for the next round of tire tests! Not that I'll be able to use any of these tires on my e39 5 series on 17 inch wheels...There isn't even a PS5 in 235/45R17 :( Nevertheless, damn exciting to watch tire tech.
So it is basically Pierre who is responsible for the vague steering feel of PS4S and the dead center 😊 That was a big step back from the amazing feel of Pilot Supersport. Cannot wait to test the PSS5 and I hope Michelin got back to the proper steering feel.

Dear Jonathan. I this video, I noticed you said these tires are not available aftermarket(?). I replaced my BMW/star-marked Pilot Super Sport for my BMW F85/X5M with the new PS5S AML "Acoustic" (sound insulating foam inside) back in May. I'm sure these are available throughout Europe. You should be able to do more tests, yes? Any plans atm, and, if so, what's next up for testing the PS5S? Best.

Haven't the MPS S5's been around for a while now? Can't understand why the range of sizes is still so limited. Been waiting for a while to see if 285/30/21 comes out so I can fit them to my RS6, if they don't arrive soon I'm gonna be replacing the current PS4S set with the same. No biggie as I've ran PS4S on all my cars since they were released.

Over 200 quid cheaper than everywhere else for the pair. Get 44 quid cashback from Michelin too and my mate can fit+balance them for free, every little helps!
Very interesting. The PS4S doesn't come in an N-spec for 315/30/21 rears with the 911 (it's either Aston, Mercedes, or Panamera spec) so I'll be keeping an eye when they release this publicly! For now, my go to for a 315 rear would probably be the Eagel F1 Supersport

The 4S* came after the OE, it's very unusual michelin have release the S5 OE fitments before aftermarket. Good things come to those who wait though.

same for my M2, but PS4S vs PSS5, the cup2 are much more designed for track, the PSS5 is more road/wet designed.
In truth 90% of their job is managing the massive overweight of modern cars.

I work in the Michelin mold shop and what we have done to make that velvet on the sidewall is brilliance and super satisfying to touch.

Yep, that's a problem that's not going away but Bridgestone are doing a good job serviving it

Thanks, Jon, for keeping us informed on a tire that I'm hoping will be a good successor to the PS4S.
This tire looks as if it would probably be good for a car like mine, a NA 390 hp 3200 lb FM RWD 6MT sports coupe. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if Michelin will have sizes available for the mass market before I need to get new tires, so I guess I'll soldier on with the 4S.
Don't ignore the SC7 if you're in Europe

Early review on Michelin Pilot Sport S5. specifically made for certain vehicles. As for large market consumer market, give it 2 or 3 more years. For all you warm-hot and seasonably Dry folks, get the Pilot Sport S4 it still does not disappoint in Summer -Dry performance.

The handling of the vehicle will change but in theory, the tyre should behave the same. They do all the testing in the most extreme mode
Agree my only criticism of the 4s was slightly squishy turn in, if they’ve fixed this and maintained the rest it will be awesome 🤩

The PSAS4 matches or beats the DWS06+ in most tests. No word on a replacement for either but they must be close

That’s interesting because most/all the ratings/reviews I’ve seen of these 2 tires have said the complete opposite (being that the DWS06+ is better in almost every way)…

Not a big fan of tyres highly tuned for a aspecific car. What happens in a few years when the car is a bit older and the tyre is NLA? Better to tune the car to work well with a reasonable range of tyres.

Spot on. Michelin will be contracted to make these tyres for at least 10 years, and in 10 years the aftermarket PSS8 or whatever it is will be better.
every OE development is secured by a contract assuring the supply of the tire all along the production of the car + a certain period of "continuity of service", no worry about that.

So it is basically Pierre who is responsible for the vague steering feel of PS4S and the dead center 😊 That was a big step back from the amazing feel of Pilot Supersport.
Cannot wait to test the PSS5 and I hope Michelin got back to the proper steering feel.
haha no, Pierre is AMG only. I'd blame marketing for the soft feel of the PS4S as they drive the aftermarket goals.

I this video, I noticed you said these tires are not available aftermarket(?).
I replaced my BMW/star-marked Pilot Super Sport for my BMW F85/X5M with the new PS5S AML "Acoustic" (sound insulating foam inside) back in May.
I'm sure these are available throughout Europe. You should be able to do more tests, yes? Any plans atm, and, if so, what's next up for testing the PS5S?

Haven't the MPS S5's been around for a while now? Can't understand why the range of sizes is still so limited. Been waiting for a while to see if 285/30/21 comes out so I can fit them to my RS6, if they don't arrive soon I'm gonna be replacing the current PS4S set with the same. No biggie as I've ran PS4S on all my cars since they were released.
PSS5 are only realesed for specific OE fitments for the moment (AMG, Aston martin, ferrari...).
@@BixenteDelBosque Wonder how long it'll be before they get opened to the mainstream market. Just ordered a pair of 285/30/21 PS4S's from camskill, only 273 quid each. Over 200 quid cheaper than everywhere else for the pair. Get 44 quid cashback from Michelin too and my mate can fit+balance them for free, every little helps!

Very interesting. The PS4S doesn't come in an N-spec for 315/30/21 rears with the 911 (it's either Aston, Mercedes, or Panamera spec) so I'll be keeping an eye when they release this publicly!
For now, my go to for a 315 rear would probably be the Eagel F1 Supersport
