@MiGujack3 Cars today are waaaay more reliable. Trust me, I have driven only BMWs since 96. Only there was no UA-cam for people to spred wrong information.
When I was in high school, a friend’s dad’s friend had a 850csi that he twin turbo charged. Never rode in it, but used to see it ripping around town all the time. Thing sounded awesome and was a monster apparently.
I absolutely ADORE my 850i. Favorite car I’ve ever had. Chips & exhaust make these perfect. The 6 speed gearbox feels great, the engines in these have so much character & it’s genuinely a pretty reliable car. I’ve done 3500 miles in mine including a road trip & it’s been great. This car will always be such a poster car for me.
Never knew they were that rare! In the early 2000's I had an E36 M3 as did my best friend who was a service advisor at BMW San Antonio where I always hung out. Another service advisor owned a Red 850csi and it was just stunning to look at. Never rode in it but I did ride in white 850i. That V12 is effortless and has gobs of torque.
This is officially my favorite video Jason. You got my favorite car. The BMW E31 is such a timeless car and truly 1 of a kind!! it's just a shame that they didn't think about releasing the 850CSI from the start. Also Thanks to Hagerty for another fantastic video! Possibly the best video of a BMW E31 you could find!
This was BMW’s inflection point. They started out making drivers cars disguised as luxury cars. The 8 series is when they started making luxury cars disguised as drivers cars. They had a segment cornered, but wasted too much time and money trying to take market share from Mercedes. They lost their way.
Fantastic video. That 850CSI is a PERFECT car. Stunning design and proportions. No words for how good it looks. THANK YOU for the driving portion at the end.
So the M8 is the forefather to the i8 - showcase of new tech and beauty that transcends performance. A flex This hurts my brain because I love both of these cars!
@@erics8192 Absolutely agree. Yet, the public discussion focussed a lot to sustainability and environmental friendlyness in Germany at the time. The big three manufacturers (VW/Audi, BMW, Merc) came under a lot of pressure. This was at its peak with the defeat device scandal and later with the "Friday for Future" protests. I always thought this was a very hollow discussion, because maybe left leaning elites thought like this, but the majority of the people dont wished for a 3 cylinder high performance sportscar. And the rich elites would rather buy a Tesla or a Fisker. Or a Porsche SUV. lol The i3 and the i8 were flagship projects. A show off of technology and capability. They were constructed mostly out of carbon fiber, which was also to save the carbon fiber manufacturer in the portfolio of Susanne Klatten (she owns roughly 12% of the BMW group). She had invested a lot into SGL Carbon and the company was at risk.
I have been waiting for another episode so BADLY... I LOVE these shows. My god you guys are amazing! I remember driving past a Hagerty building here close to Denver where I live and I was like I wanna work for them. I saw y'all were hiring for some IT guys, but I didn't make the cut. I was so sad, but at least I have this show!
Another Camisa and Hagerty home run. I do remember this car. I was a kid when this came out. Car and Driver did a comparison befween it and the flared hip 928 GTS. The Porsche won. I want both!
This car was originally designed for executives to drive from meeting to meeting as fast as possible via autobahn. Noise and handling not required. My mates dad had one and my girlfriends dad had one. They would have meetings all over germany, they'd hit the autobahn, set cruise control to 200 and go.
fantastic vid. As a bmw fan, i may have been aware of this model of the 8-series at one time, but it had completely slipped my mind. GREAT refresh, thanks hagerty
I don’t care that it’s quiet, it is so gorgeous. I remember seeing one of these (an 850i) back then, it was as if the woman in red walked by… stopped in my tracks, jaw dropped and I couldn’t stop staring at it. Such an understated beauty. Still today, the best looking coupe ever built.
I always understood and felt its distinctive quiet ride as a part of specific "gentleman's" car personality I trully adore. Maybe because when was a kid the KITT my car hero was also quietly superfast too!
Either BMW has lost its design edge or all other manufacturers have finally caught up, because they simply don't make cars as beautiful or timeless as the 90s and early 2000s!
From a small selection of previous Hagerty videos, I thought Jason was enjoyable enough to watch... this one took it to 11 and then some! Automotive entertainment at its finest. And what a story to boot!
I don't care if Jason commentates on paint drying on an obscure channel shot exclusively in 480 black and white, I'd still watch the crap out of it. This man's talents are immeasurable!!
Great review of a little known niche of BMW. Congrats on adding this M8 to your family, Jason. 👍🏼👏 Thanks Hagerty for giving Jason a platform to keep these automotive legends alive in our hearts. ❤

I started watching Jason due to these fantastic series. I’m from Australia and had no idea who he was. I Really thought he was doing some great work but didn’t think much more of it and honestly kinda thought he’s good but so are many other UA-cam presenters. I love the Bill Nye, or Alton Brown type approach you take to explaining the technical aspects in an entertaining way. I can also appreciate that I was too young when this car came out to understand what made it so special. Thanks Jason, and more of this content please!
Camissa never disappoints... ever! Definitely one of the best automotive journalists/commenters/influencers in the biz. I loved the episode and that beautiful car. ❤
FINALLY!! Another Cammisa upload 🙌🏽
Yeah, I thought he might have flown the coop.
@@cbotten106 What? Naaah, new Carmudgeon Show every monday (go sub to that channel!) and every third Thursday over here!
This was when BMW had great style and engineering
Before the beaver teeth
And reliability.
@@ccoedo808 the remind me more of Chick Hicks from Cars
Yep. Until 2001 when BMW made Z8, E39, E38, E46
@MiGujack3 Cars today are waaaay more reliable. Trust me, I have driven only BMWs since 96. Only there was no UA-cam for people to spred wrong information.
That German accent gets me every time. Absolutely flawless.
Amazing as always. This one is a bucket list drive for me. One of the great cars ever made.
I’m 53. I remember these.
I’d have a V12 850 in a heartbeat. They were spectacular things new. I’ve actually got them saved as a Carsales search…
Reitzle was one of the greatest automotive managers! Did great things at BMW!
You got a lot of stuff that makes sense to me in your explanation about Germans and noise, which I am a German who cannot stand excessive noise....
This has been a zen moment in my life seeing the car that I love and understanding something about myself and why I love some things even more Jason. Thank you!🎉
Like all Jason Camissa videos I was grinning from the get-go, but completely LOST IT (at 09:48) with the stylish designer from Germany impression! 😆🤣 Well done and thanks as always Jason and Co!
Reminiscent of Dieter from Sprockets a recurring SNL skit performed by Mike Meyers.
@@alangil40 Bingo!
@@JasonCammisa Well I'm old enough to remember and if the glasses and black shirt didn't give it away it was the "this story has become tiresome" line that cemented it. Brilliantly done by the way, I laughed out loud.
Me too
One of the most iconic automotive content producer doing a review of one of the most iconic BMWs in history. Not bad! 🍿🍿
Ah the "lipstick on a pig" analogy. I gotchu Jason lol.
suits him well.
@@memertmemes2586 Truffles anyone. 🐷
we all got it.
Jason you outdid yourself with that Schnitzel rant in the middle. Frikkin' Gold!
@jasoncammisa is now my new favourite car show host now that Clarkson retired, but honestly, I would watch both. Knowledgeable and entertaining, with a great sense of humour and the driving skills to go with it. Plus, he does his own thing in his own style. Refreshing and a pleasure to watch.
You made me shed a tear, after witnessing this beautiful symphony. You shift the gears very well. I love BMW, thank you fur sharing your driving experience!
Thank you!
That "M CAR" license plate👌🏻
The Dieter impersonation was brilliant and exactly the thing I did not know I needed. Thanks for the great videos!
Thoroughly enjoyable lecture. The icing on the cake at the end was sublime too.
I lived in Germany for 3 years as a kid and my dad got really good at his German impression. This brought back a but of memories and laughter. thank you. Oh and my Great uncle had one of these cars in black. I saw it once. Never forgot it.
The BMW E31 is such a timeless car and truly 1 of a kind!! it's just a shame that they didn't think about releasing the 850CSI from the start. Also Thanks to Hagerty for another fantastic video! Possibly the best video of a BMW E31 you could find!
I’m not a car guy. Jason Cammisa is the only reason I watch these. Balances details with accessibility.
This was BMW’s inflection point. They started out making drivers cars disguised as luxury cars. The 8 series is when they started making luxury cars disguised as drivers cars. They had a segment cornered, but wasted too much time and money trying to take market share from Mercedes. They lost their way.
This has to be the best Revelations yet!
Fantastic video. That 850CSI is a PERFECT car. Stunning design and proportions. No words for how good it looks. THANK YOU for the driving portion at the end.
17:20 you hear similar sound to the McLaren, although you can tell it has not been tuned to perfection like the F1. Still nice though.
Love the 740i shorty sporty wheels on it. They look perfect.
So the M8 is the forefather to the i8 - showcase of new tech and beauty that transcends performance. A flex
This hurts my brain because I love both of these cars!
the i8 deserved a inline 6 engine with those looks, it might have had a shot at selling well (for the price range it was in mind you) if it did.
Or a Porsche SUV. lol
The i3 and the i8 were flagship projects. A show off of technology and capability. They were constructed mostly out of carbon fiber, which was also to save the carbon fiber manufacturer in the portfolio of Susanne Klatten (she owns roughly 12% of the BMW group). She had invested a lot into SGL Carbon and the company was at risk.
@@Gentleman...Driver virtue signal on the i3, give the i8 the engine that it deserved
they should've made an i3 ///M with the i8's powertrain
and an i8 ///M with the S55 engine
I have been waiting for another episode so BADLY... I LOVE these shows. My god you guys are amazing! I remember driving past a Hagerty building here close to Denver where I live and I was like I wanna work for them. I saw y'all were hiring for some IT guys, but I didn't make the cut. I was so sad, but at least I have this show!
Another Camisa and Hagerty home run. I do remember this car. I was a kid when this came out. Car and Driver did a comparison befween it and the flared hip 928 GTS. The Porsche won. I want both!
Revelations and Sprockets are a natural pair, like Sausage and Sauerkraut!
The Sprockets bit had me rolling
This car was originally designed for executives to drive from meeting to meeting as fast as possible via autobahn. Noise and handling not required. My mates dad had one and my girlfriends dad had one. They would have meetings all over germany, they'd hit the autobahn, set cruise control to 200 and go.
Ind€€d !!! e31 has been mostly misunderstood....
fantastic vid. As a bmw fan, i may have been aware of this model of the 8-series at one time, but it had completely slipped my mind. GREAT refresh, thanks hagerty
Superb. And if you don't have time for the whole video, just watch the last minute and a half - it tells you everything you need to know...
Awesome car!!!!
It felt like seeing an exotic that you knew exactly who made it
I always understood and felt its distinctive quiet ride as a part of specific "gentleman's" car personality I trully adore. Maybe because when was a kid the KITT my car hero was also quietly superfast too!
Either BMW has lost its design edge or all other manufacturers have finally caught up, because they simply don't make cars as beautiful or timeless as the 90s and early 2000s!
I'd argue you on the m8 gran coupe, f8x m4, and if they put that m4 csl front bumper on the regular m4s thats my case for that at least.
The first cut is always the deepest. Are you not 40+?
their design studio isnt german anymore.
@@Keckegenkai That's true!
Blame whomever hired Chris Bangle instead of encouraging him to apply his “talents” at Pontiac instead.
This is a great episode. Probably my favorite, so far. I love my 6-speed E31 850i. I’d love to have an 850CSi.
From a small selection of previous Hagerty videos, I thought Jason was enjoyable enough to watch... this one took it to 11 and then some! Automotive entertainment at its finest. And what a story to boot!
Your German accent is spot on lmao 🎯🤣
Jason's German accent killed me 😂
I don't care if Jason commentates on paint drying on an obscure channel shot exclusively in 480 black and white, I'd still watch the crap out of it. This man's talents are immeasurable!!
Great review of a little known niche of BMW. Congrats on adding this M8 to your family, Jason. 👍🏼👏
Thanks Hagerty for giving Jason a platform to keep these automotive legends alive in our hearts. ❤
Hagerty, as well as JASON..... can bring the perspective of the early 90's so relevant. This triggered so much for me from the 90's, and even '80s I can not experes here. Keep going Jason!!!...you are the reason I watch Hagerty videos, you know how to bring the correct light to these so loved cars.
Can I just say that we need more Hagerty videos with Jason and german cars? His german accent cracks me up 😂
I love the " schprockets" dance.
I got to dive an 850i about 10 years ago. Never before was I that disappointed about driving a car. All my life I have loved it until I drove it
Never meet your heros. I had one for about a year. While a great GT it was never a good city car.
Jason, you BRING ZE GREATNESS to all your videos. They are all a mandatory watch for me.
I started watching Jason due to these fantastic series. I’m from Australia and had no idea who he was. I Really thought he was doing some great work but didn’t think much more of it and honestly kinda thought he’s good but so are many other UA-cam presenters.
Then the whole cyber truck incident happened. Watching him talk on Matt’s pod cast really opened my eyes to his talents and abilities to stay factual under pressure. Jason you’re an a++ journalist and sadly a dying bread.
thanks for producing fantastic content that I can trust and is entertaining.
