Where the Cadbury flake!! I keep my mums trifle tradition going in Montreal. Use Swiss roll sliced at the base and some form of booze to soak the Swiss roll before adding the jelly layer!! And best the second day (Boxing Day)to eat as the flavours have infused more with the leftover trifle :-)
Gorgeous! My daughters and I (Americans with Scottish ancestry) appreciate your video! Such a warm and inviting voice you have. I bet your kitchen could make anyone feel at home. ❤
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ “American and with scaatish ancestry” 🤣🤣 how in 2022 do Americans STILL not know what a standing joke it is for us Scot’s to hear that. 🙈🙈
Thankyou Cheryl As I'm approaching 50, I'm finding I am missing never having my Granny around to teach me things like cooking. I thought I'd just look for a trifle recipe. Then I found you. I wonder if Granny led me here. Probably. Thankyou. You've helped this family have a little magic this year. Seriously, Thankyou ❤
I use my mother's recipe which uses almost the same ingredients as yours but in a different way first I place the sponges in the base of the dish cut in halves with jam in them then half a glass of sherry / rum / other alcohol, is poured over the tinned fruit (usually fruit cocktail) is drained and the juice added to water to melt the jelly bricks but the quantity is reduced so as to make the jelly firmer when it sets. The fruit is spread over the sponges and the liquid jelly poured over and left to set - the custard is made and added and also left to set - the whipped cream is piped directly on to the custard and the top decorated with halved glace cherries and angelica and toasted almond flakes. I now live in Spain and can't get instant whip, otherwise I would try your version ! - love your Chanel and listening to your accent which takes me back to my childhood memories of much loved grandparents and Christmases gone by - Happy Christmas!
As loads of people have said this as taken me back to the late 70s and 80s. My mum would always make a trifle for special occasions and that's just like she made it. Thanks very much for taking me back in time and I'm definitely making this for christmas 🎄 😀 😊
Ah this takes me right back to being a wee girl in the 80s with my mums trifle , she had to have a wee tipple in it , usually sherry which I loved 😂. Good old Scottish Christmas. Yours looks Devine ❤
I was going to ask what happened to a bit of the good stuff. My aunt was the trifle maker in our family and I think she used a bit of port in hers. Sad thing is, she passed away and nobody seems to have ever gotten her recipe.
Birds dream topping ….. now that brings back great memories from when I was a wee nipper baking cakes and making trifles with my wee gran 😌 Thanks for sharing Cheryl the trifle looks amazing ♥️xx
My father always used to make the trifle in our house and he would use slices of raspberry Swiss rolls as the sponge layer usually soaked with sherry then covered with raspberry jelly. Sometimes he would not add a custard layer, but it he did he’d just use a custard powder to make it, then a layer of whipped cream and he would decorate the top by arranging peach slices and fresh raspberries on the top. On some occasions he would make the trifle into a mock Black Forest one using chocolate Swiss rolls soaked with cherry brandy and cherry flavoured jelly, a chocolate cream layer with a thin layer of whipped white cream, decorated with homemade chocolate curls and a few cherries arranged across the top.
Ur Dad knew what he was doing! And living in the U.S & having done a fair bit travelling, naturally u encounter some wonderful meals & Dessert's & I think the Trifle like what this charming lady produced& I think ur Dads creative efforts would impress anyone!
Ooh, yes please! I love home made trifle. Knocks spots off the bland shop bought ones! You've just taken me right back to my 80's childhood when my mum used to make one on special occasions. x
I’m feeling very nostalgic now, this reminds me of my lovely grandma, she made trifle like this, she put 100’s and 1000’s over the top, thank you for sharing your video
It’s trifle just as mum made it, sometimes we forget that lovely food doesn’t have to be too difficult or expensive. Thank you for this trip down memory lane, I’m making it for Xmas 😋
Wow! That is a TRIFLE! Just like we had when I was a boy. And I never knew you could still get Dream Topping. Great idea mixing two jellies and better to use a can of strawberries rather than out- of-season fresh ones with no flavour. I'm making this at Christmas. Thank you!❄☃️🎍🎄👍
I chuckled when you mentioned you’ve never heard of anyone else putting jam between your sponges as I’ve done the same for years and thought I was unique!! It does make the trifle extra delicious😊
My mouth is watering. Trifle is my favourite pudding ever. This one looks delicious but not complicated. Epic. Couldn't help but notice your HIM heartagram too so you've got great taste in puddings and music! LOL
This takes me back a long way! Birds custard and Dream Topping ! Do you remember that you could buy a trifle kit with that in and the multi-coloured sprinkles for the top? As a kid I used to feel like a proper chef making one for Sunday dinner - suddenly I’ve got the urge to try and make one, unless you’d consider sending me that one 😃
I love trifle and always looked forward to Christmas because it was always accompanied with plum pudding and more custard. I think one must go with the other and of course fruit salad. I generally use raspberry and lime jelly together in my trifle and pour them together with sponge. It looks quite attractive keeping them apart so as they don't mix together. I then add my mixed fruit over the top of another layer of sponge and enough juice just enough to dampen sponge, then a layer of custard and cream topping. I only use strawberries for decoration only as I find them to be quite tart. Thanks from New Zealand.
This looks like the Queen of desserts!! I have never in my life seen jelly cubes. They are so cute! I guess in the US we would have to use powdered gelatin. I am dying to dig into that right now haha!
Oh that looks good. My mum (has dementia now, tough but have great memories when she had capacity), she always made a cracking buffett and star of the food was always her trifle. x
My dad (b. Porthsmouth, UK) used to make one every Christmas. He loved to bake and cook. And he spread the lady fingers with raspberry or apricot jam! So good. He used real whipped cream for your top layer. And soaked the fingers in a bit of triple sec. Thanks for sharing your recipe.
Looks good. I cant believe that Dream Topping is still a thing. FANTASIC NEWS!! As for trifles...my Dad used to make trifle with Chopped banana in it. It made for my favourite kind of trifle
This is a trifle same as I grew up eating. Some have no jelly layer but this is perfect. Nice touch adding the white choc buttons to the custard. Beautiful. Well done Cheryl
Ah Cheryl, this looks amazing! Growing up in the U.S. in the 80's my grandma and mother would make such things around the holidays (we're a family of Irish and German background). Thank you so much for the lovely video and the nostalgia/ memories you brought out. Warmest Holiday wishes.
On lovely. Memories of my Scottish aunty's trifle was way back in the 1950s!. She used a jam Swiss roll for the cake element, and no Dream Topping, we were still on rations at that time.
Omg Cheryl that trifle looks amazing 😍 me mam used to put a Swiss roll in her jelly as we didn't like them trifle fingers or a bit of homemade Madera cake 🍰
Its so fun to see some differences! I've never seen jelly cubes OR canned strawberries here in my corner of the US. How beautiful that looks. Very impressive
I think it very much depends on the country. I was born in the UK and remember the jelly cubes, but in Australia its always n crystal form. I think it may be due to the humidity levels, as beet sugar based products liquify very quickly here. Our products in Australia are cane sugar based.
Looks scrumptious 😍& takes me back to long ago, when it always used to be my job to make the jelly part on Xmas Eve. The trouble was I couldn’t resist having a wee spoonful or six while it was still warm (the smell was tooooo tempting ☺️), to the point where I’d have demolished half of it before it was set!🫣 My mum got wise to me eventually & always had an extra packet in the cupboard in reserve!😂🤣🤣 I didn’t realise you could still buy dream topping, that was another of my jobs to do on Christmas Day, always topped with either tinned tangerines or maraschinos & chocolate vermicelli. Ahhh the good old days!🥰
Instant Trifle: Cut panettone into cubes, place into individual dessert dishes, sprinkle with sherry, drizzle with store-made custard or tapioca, then store-made pie filling (ready to eat). Then spray type whip cream and garnish. Get the children to make these up after dinner. It'll be a fun activity for them. 😊
Beautiful trifle, we always have trifle after Christmas dinner. I'd never have thought of dream topping, I bet it tastes fabulous when finished. Thanks for the inspiration Cheryl xx
Trifles were always a ‘traditional’ thing to make and eat at Christmas in 🏴 My late mother was such a wonderful cook in so many ways and she made trifle for family get togethers on Boxing Day Now I am retired I follow in my mothers skill at cooking having watched her Since she died in 2019 aged 93 I have made Trifle each year For the custard part I make Mascarpone Custard with egg yolks, sugar and then a tub of Mascarpone And a little brandy, or amaretto or any alcohol you like 😭😭😭♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Ooh that looks delish 🎂 I didn’t know you could get the instant whip separately, I thought it just came with the trifle kits. Definitely going to give this ago 😋 Hope you have a lovely weekend, thanks for sharing x

I’ve worked as a chef for many years and you have to be one of the best home cooks I’ve seen online
Aw thats so kind...thank you! :)
Thankyou Cheryl

Bloody hell takes me back to when I was 9 and my mother did this for Christmas. I'm 46 now. Thanks for the memories
What a treasure.Whips me back to Northern Ireland 1969 and a freezing cold house and a trifle ready for Christmas dinner.
You probably didn’t have to stick it in the ‘fridge either😂😂🇨🇦
Oh, lovely Christmas intro.
Ooh, yes please! I love home made trifle. Knocks spots off the bland shop bought ones! You've just taken me right back to my 80's childhood when my mum used to make one on special occasions. x

Just makes it a bit tastier…with powdered custard especially 😊❤

I made my first trifle for Christmas Eve dinner this year. Carrying it in was a real “Ta-dah!” moment!
I made this trifle for Christmas this year. It was absolutely delicious. Thank you.

On lovely. Memories of my Scottish aunty's trifle was way back in the 1950s!. She used a jam Swiss roll for the cake element, and no Dream Topping, we were still on rations at that time.
Glorious. My mother’s were similar to this, and she was famous for them. Never made one, this has inspired me to give it a go 👊🏻
That's absolutely gorgeous
Will be trying this, a family favourite.
That's the trifle we use to eat in the 70s and 80's. 😆 Thanks Cheryl x We use to use Port Wine jelly
Strawberries, raspberries, and custard are three of your five a day. Looks amazing. It's not Christmas until there's a trifle eaten. Merry Christmas!
Omg Cheryl that trifle looks amazing 😍 me mam used to put a Swiss roll in her jelly as we didn't like them trifle fingers or a bit of homemade Madera cake 🍰
Looks lovely. My mam used to use swiss jam roll and chocolate flakes x
Absolutely adore proper trifle 😋😋
Yum I used to always buy a mini trifle from the shop as a child
Could enjoy your trifle right away

Trifles were always a ‘traditional’ thing to make and eat at Christmas in 🏴
My late mother was such a wonderful cook in so many ways and she made trifle for family get togethers on Boxing Day
Now I am retired I follow in my mothers skill at cooking having watched her
Since she died in 2019 aged 93 I have made Trifle each year
For the custard part I make Mascarpone Custard with egg yolks, sugar and then a tub of Mascarpone
And a little brandy, or amaretto or any alcohol you like
😭😭😭♥️♥️♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏🙏🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
My mother makes the same every year at Christmas in Ireland 🇮🇪 😋
Oh this looks so so delicious !!!
Thank you ….. I’m definitely gonna do this! 👏👏👏
Ooh that looks delish 🎂 I didn’t know you could get the instant whip separately, I thought it just came with the trifle kits. Definitely going to give this ago 😋 Hope you have a lovely weekend, thanks for sharing x
Looks amazing but I’m old school I have to soak the trifle sponge in Sherry…
Happy Christmas 🤶🏻
Yummy, love a good trifle. Looks fantastic. 😊🇳🇿
Trifle originated in England, not Scotland, in the 1600s. My family has traditionally made trifle for Boxing Day. This has been a tradition since I was a child, and I am now in my sixties. We love it.
