This takes me back so many years to my mum’s trifle. She always used slices of jam roll, tinned fruit cocktail in the strawberry jelly and definitely Birds custard powder made really thick with tinned cream on the top and glacé cherries.
My Word sponge on top of the jelly in my experience (born 1953) sponge was always on the bottom then in the 60/70s mums started using Swiss Roll slices to line the dish
I could scoff a bowl of that trifle😋 brought back memories of when I was a kid and me and dad used to make 2 different types of trifle on Xmas eve, poor mum had to work so me and dad did all the prep, happy days
That looks so nice Cheryl. We always had trifle, my mum many years ago used the birds trifle where you got everything in the box!! She's passed away now but its just made me think.of her as she loved trifle. Think im going to give this a go.
This was an unexpected wee Christmas surprise on a Tuesday Cheryl, made me smile & lifted my spirits … thinking back to childhood & feeling all grown up, when I got to make the trifle for Christmas.☺️ I was probably around 9/10 years old, & remember snaffling half the liquified jelly off a spoon when it was still warm & not yet set!🫣😬😆 We normally included fruit cocktail & some sliced Madeira cake to the jelly, birds custard & dream topping as well (didn’t know they still sold that these days), topped off with either chocolate vermicelli or crumbled up flake chocolate bar, ~ the maraschino cherries 🍒 were an optional extra as some wee moaning Minnie’s didn’t like them!🤭 Loved this wee walk down memory lane with you 🥰, & loving your wee extras, such as the jelly cocktail mix, the milky bar buttons in the custard & the ‘jammin’ trifle sponge tip. Might try making a smaller version of this over the festive season!😋 Thanks as always for sharing 🙏, & hope you’re having a fab week, despite the yucky weather. xx 👩🏻🍳👌👍😋✨🎄✨💖
Lol...this is like a flashback to my whole first 20yrs olf life!! My Mum always bought a couple of packets of Bird's Trifle every Christmas. We'd have ours with cocktail fruit (hands up who else loved getting the tiny grape in their serving?!). We'd also have some extra Dream Topping and - can't remember when we first experienced this?? - Squirty Cream!!😂 I credit my sister for introducing my (thrn) 2yr old son to squirty cream. He got his 'Initiation' then, having the cream squinted straight into his mouth straight from the can by her. He's 36 now and still does it: l know his son does it too - because l did it to him at the same age!😂 Think we even used to give a squirt to the dog too!! How brilliant were those Christmases of the 60s and 70s as kids? Wonderful times 🎅 🎄present 🎁
Cor blimey that looks beautiful. Good memories of my mums amazing trifle every Christmas which had a good glug of Sherry in it. I'm old now and diabetic and dairy intolerant so it will have to remain a lovely memory 😢
Dear Cheryl and family - just a wee note to thank you for the entertaining videos and recipes over the years, I am wishing you and your family a most happy Christmas and a New Year filled with joy and great health and happiness. Love from Canada
Your Trifle looks amazing (or rather divine, considering the time of year). If I wasn't allergic to strawberries I would make it myself. Fascinating to the see the raspberry/strawberry gelatin squares -- never seen anything like that. . Your final product looks perfect and professionally made. Don't sell yourself short. You can take the most sublime ingredients and insert your magic. I remain in awe of your talent .
Hi Cheryl it’s only me - I hope you got the message I sent you - I’m now out of hospital accident and emergency on a Friday and Saturday night is the worst possible place to be in the world - I’m just gonna have my medication settle down and then I will watch your lovely recipe ~ it’s been quite warm down here today. We’re up to 11° or not exactly warm but warmer than 5° - sending loads of love and hugs as always.~ Xxx Xxx
This is my absolute favourite of desserts,Oh my word Chyrill . I’m literally salivating watching this video.. Luckily my grand children love trifle too. I’m going to make this for when everyone comes over to us for New Years Day……🏴😄🏴
We never did the jelly, as we just didn’t like that set bottom, but we did spread the raspberry jam on the cake, and cut into small pieces, then soaked with a mixture of sherry, and the juice from tinned peach’s, topped with custard, and real whipped cream. I haven’t made one for a few years now, I live alone, bit too much on my own.😊
I've never seen canned strawberries, frozen yes, canned no. Here in North America we enjoy fresh berries all year long. Most of them come from Mexico or South America.
Should be the easiest thing in the world to make custard, but mine invariably burns on the bottom of the saucepan. Don't do them anymore but yours looks great.
We have jelly crystals in the US too, I think it’s just the way the gelatin is processed, both work the same,I’m English, but live in the US, so I have used both the blocks, and crystals, as a pastry chef I also have used unflavored gelatin sheets.😊
I make trifle every year but I never use jelly inside the trifle. I hate the solid nature of it inside the trifle. I use it chopped up into very small pieces and use it as decoration on the top of the trifle to decorate to satisfy those who love jelly. Always use Madeira cake way better than trifle sponges. I have a wee jug of sherry to hand when serving for those who like it instead of inside. I don’t use birds custard I use the fresh custard you can buy which makes it more high end dessert.
I do have other trifle recipes on the channel....a sherry trifle and also a trifle where the jelly and custard are both made from scratch ☺ This one is just a bit easier and quicker than the other ones I have.
@georgestalla5961 … Ooooh, hark at you, who’s ‘awe fur coat & nae knickers noo”? To repeat an earlier comment of yours … Hope it gave you a nice wee warm fuzzy glow inside, being such a rude & obnoxious cretin! Perhaps Santa will bring you a shiny new personality transplant for Christmas. 😆 Cheerio 👋 & don’t verbally assault the reindeer if they inadvertently answer the call of nature on your lawn! 😂✨🎄🦌🛷🎅🏼🎁✨💫😊
Ignore the nay sayers Cheryl, your trifle looks delicious, that's the thing with trifle, you adapt it to whatever suits your families tastes, nothing's set in stone 😂😂
"Old school" doesn't necessarily mean "from scratch". "Old school lasagna" doesn't mean that I have to make the noodles and the cheese, or the tomato sauce...🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@Randilynn66 again, the fact that I don't crank out noodles from a pasta machine the way my grandmother did doesn't make my lasagne less authentic. I didn't milk the cows to get the cheese and grow my own tomatoes. I suppose you go out and kill a horse to get the gelatin yourself?
@@LindaC616 I think you're just being ridiculous now. I don't make lasagna noodles from scratch, I make the sauce from scratch. To me, that is still old school.
One from the archives today folks! Hope you enjoy...this is one from 2021 ☺💙
It's lovely. TY.
Oh WOW! I haven’t seen that kind of trifle in about 40 years. Thanks for bringing back that memory 🥰
This takes me back so many years to my mum’s trifle. She always used slices of jam roll, tinned fruit cocktail in the strawberry jelly and definitely Birds custard powder made really thick with tinned cream on the top and glacé cherries.
Me too! I haven’t even seen the tins of fruit cocktail in years
This looks so pretty!
I am making a Black Forest trifle this year for Christmas. ❤

My old mum used to make this all the time. I never have. After seeing this I've decided I need to.
That looks so nice Cheryl. We always had trifle, my mum many years ago used the birds trifle where you got everything in the box!! She's passed away now but its just made me think.of her as she loved trifle. Think im going to give this a go.
What a beautiful dessert! It looks delicious.
I hope you are having a great day ❤
Iv never even thought of mixing the flavours, absolutely love that.
And that white choc in the custard 😋
That has got to be the ultimate trifle 😊❤
So retro-classic! Something I’ve never seen in America…tinned whole strawberries. I do appreciate a non-boozy trifle, though. Cheers, and ATB!
Yeah I was like CANNED STRAWBERRIES?!? 😂
Sometimes in the baking aisle with the cans of pie filling they have whole strawberries in very thick syrup.
I am 100% making this. Classic. Thank you 😊😋
Thank you for sharing, Cheryl. You just can't beat a trifle at this time of the year. Merry Christmas!! 🙌

Yes, it does look fab! Love the commentary.
Aw my mum's trifle with Dream topping and fighting with my brother to lick the bowl! Happy Christmas to you and yours xxx
Ok, It's now officially Christmas time!!
🎉🎉🎉❤️ I've enjoyed seeing the whole meal that year. I've watched it several times.
I make the triffle every Christmas and i am going to add the vanila buttons to the custard and do the jam in between this year

@@BeaMantari It’s a fabulous little nozzle isn’t it Bea, I wonder what it’s called or what number it is in the cake decorating world.
This looks so good! So is the jelly, actually jello? gelatin?

omg i love your videos where did u get ya trifle bowl, its beautiful
Just the thing today

Can i ask you a queston please is it a tin of fruit cocktail normally used in a traditional Scottish trifle? Tks
😋😋😋😋
Those jelly blocks are interesting, I don’t think we have them here in Australia. We have jelly crystals. Is there a difference between the two?
We have jelly crystals in the US too, I think it’s just the way the gelatin is processed, both work the same,I’m English, but live in the US, so I have used both the blocks, and crystals, as a pastry chef I also have used unflavored gelatin sheets.😊
@ thank you
When making your usual jelly from scratch, how do you get the meaty taste out of the gelatine?
I would think she uses un flavoured gelatin, I doubt she meant she is boiling up bones, un flavoured gelatin is just that flavour less .😊
What is the difference between the birds original custard and just birds custard on Amazon?
I make trifle every year but I never use jelly inside the trifle. I hate the solid nature of it inside the trifle. I'm going to be honest. I'm just here to listen to you talk.
This is nothing like a traditional trifle. This is what we call a “mucked about” trifle.
I do have other trifle recipes on the channel....a sherry trifle and also a trifle where the jelly and custard are both made from scratch ☺ This one is just a bit easier and quicker than the other ones I have.

Technically, old school means from scratch. Looks delicious though.
I do have another recipe on the channel where the custard and fruit jelly are both made from scratch 🙂 This one is just a bit easier and quicker.

@@LindaC616 It means " Old fashioned" or traditional. I doubt a trifle made from convenience foods is traditional or old fashioned.
