The breakdown at 3:40 might be my favorite part of any rock song, ever. Listening to the drums, then the bass, then the rhythm guitar all come in is awesome, then topped off by the god Robert Quine wailing on the fucking guitar. Just awesome!
Awesome! Sara Lee on bass, and the late great Robert Quine tearing it up on the guitar. The guitar work by Quine (and Richard Lloyd) on both the albums "Girlfriend," and "Altered Beast" were the perfect compliment to Sweet's songs during this period. Quine, a self-admitted curmudgeon by nature, and perhaps the most unassuming looking guitar god of his generation, produced a unique sound almost akin to a whipping steel cable that was as soulful as it was powerful. He's missed.
Check out the album Blank Generation by Richard Hell & The Voidoids if you want to hear some more Quine. Also check out stuff he did with Lou Reed and Lloyd Cole’s early solo records.
Check out Matthew Sweet album Goodfriend. It's all alternate takes of the tunes on Girlfriend, and the version of "Girlfriend" is played just like that slow part.

It would be nice if someone could repost this without Dennis Miller trying to be cute. Bombastic live version of 'Girlfriend' with Matthew Sweet and his A1 band!!!
This is what playing live is all about, not only delivering a blistering live version of a great song, but also some nice improvisation... :-) great line-up too btw, as others already mentioned here earlier.. :-)
For me? The highlight is Robert Quine to be sure. Voidoids, Lou Reed.... Kudos to Matthew Sweet for saying that "We don't need a pretty boy. We need a guitar king.". Okay, so Matthew didn't say it out loud, but by choosing Robert, he said it. Wonderful to be sure.
I finally get to see Quine tear it up. Totally cool, unique sound. This era of Matthew Sweet was definitely the pinnacle (100% Fun was cool too). Hey, does anyone know if that's Pat Mastelloto on drums?
Robert Quine had to decide....do I want to continue as a lawyer or play lead guitar with the best? Obviously made the right choice. If he wasn't the best, he was certainly among them. Shredding his Strat with his sunglasses on....cool as they get!
Yes, thank you for that info. I've LOVED this song from the second I heard the first note. The guitar work is positively STELLER!! This man was a true ROCK GOD.
I hate Dennis Miller with the fiery passion of a thousand suns, but watched this anyway for Matthew Sweet and Robert Quine and all the other excellent musicians Sweet is somehow able to get to play with him.
Matthew Sweet is very talented in his own right, but I am sure that if he had a dollar for every time someone said "Wow you played with Robert Quine" he would be a rich man.
Robert Quine. R.I.P. that studio solo on "Girlfriend" is a one of the best ever. Perfectly timed and matched to the song. I cannot tell from the video if it was intentional but his leads are drowned out by the wall of rhythm from the other guitars. I heard there was some tensions between he and Sweet. With Reed as well.
Wait...is that Pat Mastelletto playing drums? He played with Mr Mister back in the 80's, and with King Crimson from 1995-2005 or so. As for Quine's guitar being drowned out, I think it's partially because of the low volume level here. I've got my volume control maxed out. If the actual output level was higher, you'd be able to hear him better. Also, I think the show's sound guy probably had Quine potted down in the mix, as they say. Probably not used to mixing rock music.
I saw the tour Matthew Sweet did in support of Girlfriend. Sadly Quine was not the guitarist when I saw him in Chicago at the Vic. The guitarist was the OTHER guitarist from the Voidoids, Ivan Julian. I never saw Quine. Saw Lou Reed immediately after his final break with Quine. So I just missed him a couple of times. I did see Richard Lloyd twice with Television. Sadly his string broke during the final encore of "Marquee Moon" w/o a backup guitar. Verlaine played solo. Odd ending.
Robert quine shredded this song to pieces. What a fucking legend. RIP
Word.
@@taylorgallion2748 indeed. Richard Hell and the Voidoids too. Epic
THE Robert Quine…nuff said, and the drummer friggin nailed too…
Pat Mastellotto from a little band called King Crimson.
@@rik2bits forgot about that! Dude can nail the groove.

roger!
Exactly. What a classic break. What a “live” rendition!
Love how quine just stands there as to say I don't need no stinkin rhythm guitar and then just blasts out molten shards of guitar greatness
Robert Quine looks like a high school algebra teacher who lives a secret double life
Not Susanna Hoffs?
Who knew that Robert Quine was actually Joe Bonamassa’s father……
Quine looks like a live version of Mr. Garrison from South Park
Quine... I wish he was still alive. oh well.. that's part of rock and roll..

phenomenal call on Quine - his solos were hot needles pulling sutures.
Quine is pure magic. He's so melodic--and knows exactly when to play, and when not to.
Absolutely on fire in this song.
Honestly, Mr. Quine sounds like Robin Trower!! However, Robin is Still Alive..
Adrian Belew would give him a run for his money in the unassuming looking shredder department.
This is what live music is all about. Never knew the lead guitarists name until now, dude was bad ass.
Check out the album Blank Generation by Richard Hell & The Voidoids if you want to hear some more Quine. Also check out stuff he did with Lou Reed and Lloyd Cole’s early solo records.
Holy crap, is that Pat Mastelotto on drums? Didn't know he played with Matthew Sweet......COOL
I love the tempo change after the guitar solo when it goes into some slow blues.
Never heard it this way but I like it.
I feel that they play the song 'way too fast' it takes away the beauty of the melody.
Check out Matthew Sweet album Goodfriend. It's all alternate takes of the tunes on Girlfriend, and the version of "Girlfriend" is played just like that slow part.
Matthew Sweet - Lead Vocal, Rhythm Guitar
Robert Quine - Lead Guitar
Peter Holsapple - Acoustic Guitar?
Sara Lee - Bass
Paul Mastelotto - Drums
Yes, Peter Holsapple from the dBs! Lots of Athens GA connections with those two, R.E.M., Mitch Easter, etc…
Sweet is at the absolute top of his game here.
Awesome Quineness.
Best thing about this is Bob Quine. Second best is the opening reminds us of why Dennis Miller didn't last as a late night talk show host.
bob quine

For some reason he starts talking about the cameraman or someone after the song.
LOVE this frickin' song! I play it over and over and over and.......
RIP robert Quine. 2004 seems like yesterday. Peace
terrific song and this Love version and band is a blast.

Holding up the long box. Flash back to '92
quine's guitar is quintessential rock n roll
Too good, just really amazing.
Lead guitar player absolutely shredding while looking like Pete from 30 Rock. Love to see it.
ROBERT QUINE R.I.P.
LOVE LOVE this song!!!
A modern classic! Robert Quine too!!!!
WOW! Blown away!!
This video is so 90's, i love it.
Got lucky enough to see him open up for the indigo girls @ Santa Barbara bowl same year. Thanks for posting. Live music is the goods.
So damn amazing!! Also loved to see Dennis Miller 20 years ago...poor Natasha Richardson (RIP)....
I've watched this video something like twenty times in the last few days. I'm so happy I found this. This performance is absolute FIRE. Outstanding.
RIP Quine
Knock down, drag out rock and roll right here. Love all the guitars on stage
Pat Mastellotto on drums! (Mr. Mister, XTC, etc).

Met him. Along with Tony Levin at a Stickmen/Adrian Belew show. Met Adrian too. Pats a helluva guy.
cool cultural reference \m/
And King Crimson
Amazing Drummer!!
The drummer's ponytail was the true star that night.
my man was killin it on drums. this is a great live performance.
quine is incredible here
word has it that when guitarist Robert Quine was asked if he could play any better, he yelled "Inconceivable!"
Crushing guitar solo at 2:22.
LONG LIVE ROBERT QUINE!!
'cause I need to...get back in the arms of a good friend. I love it!
Rippin', kick butt rock n' roll.
This may be the most 90's video ever........so good

I remember when cds used to come in that huge box. lol
didn't know all that! I had always thought Sweet did his guitar leads on the songs. Sorry to hear Quine died- he was a definite master.

Richard Lloyd even said it?
@@albertandrews130 Richard Lloyd is brilliant as is Ivan Julian, , however my personal choice is Quine
@@billmavin1998 Yeah. I prefer Quine, too. (Have seen both play. And had an interesting half-hour conversation with Lloyd several years ago...)
The camera should have been on Robert Quine.....just saying. Whoa
Right on! Wish Richard Lloyd was next to him
@@chrisnope1Can’t say a bad word about Sweet’s taste in guitar players.
This Rocks!
Saw him at Summers Beach Club on Dune Road Hampton Bays Long Island NY ..I was barbacking with a broken foot and a string buzz ✌️
Two thumbs up!
Robert Quine didn't just walk on water, he glided and used a strat for a paddle.
That appears to be Pat Mastelotto (XTC, King Crimson, Mr. Mister, David Sylvian) on drums.
saw him about a couple months ago and I got to say he sounds better now
Almost 20 years.
I'm old.

Check it out! It's the blind guy from "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on lead guitar.
@fggrimes totally agree however the sound people should have turned Robert's guitar up a whole lot louder.
And no matter how loud it got turned up, I'd still say it could be louder. .. Quine is a fucking guitar assassin.
I came to watch the strumming pattern and kept having to rewind because all I could pay attention to was Quine.
Hey, that's Pat!
I love Miller and love Sweet! This lead is destroying. I mean seriously. I mean he's killing that shit..
Quine could stand on any stage and dominate
@fggrimes
does she play bass for the B-52's? kinda looks like her.
Robert Quine
His first few albums were fantastic. Losing Robert Quine didn't help, but his first records were incredible.
There's young Rhett Miller in the crowd taking copious notes.
Ugh Dennis Miller
