This song is at least 25 years old and it still kicks ass. Love to crank this after a few wines.. Totally love his vocals and the guitars..You just simply do not get music like this anymore.
@@charlessale409 yeah, like what? Mainstream radio sucks. They play the same 10 songs over and over. 90's were just awesome. If you didn't live through it then sorry you missed out bud.
It was a huge hit, reached #2 on... One of the charts, I can't remember which... It just didn't have the staying power b/c Oasis released "What's the Story, Morning Glory" in the fall & MTV started playing nothing but BritPop
That's very cool. Hard to describe but those were exciting times musically and culturally. I saw them at First Ave then. This song started me on the road of rabid MS collecting most of which I still have.
lucky you!!! this is my favorite version of one of my all-time fav songs the entire band is just powerful and forceful as hell, and the sweet- lloyd combo is truly a four-handed guitar monster
It's crammed with great lines. "World that's ugly and a lie/its hard to even want to try" is like the universal view of half the 20 year olds in the world. Brilliant how he keeps the words direct and simple and catchy, yet they capture so much.
i've been trying to write a song for 2 decades hoping to come up with something remotely close to this one in vain. for me, there's something so incomprehensibly sweet and painstakingly catchy with how he put the bridge to chorus melody on the simple three chords progression. and imo, even he couldn't recreate after this. it's that special.
Love this tune, and this just rocks. When they cut to the shot of the Twin Towers after the performance, made my heart jump for a second. Then I remembered - oh yeah, '95.
I almost referred to that and posted, but you are here. Saw him in Ventura '95 with my soon to be ex-wife. LOUD and fantastic. Obligatory autograph outside.
Scott L Definitely has a Bob Mould vibe to it! I don’t know why, but Mathew Sweet just popped into mind this morning & this was a great song to start off with.
Saw them the same week this was taped at the Academy of Music and met the fellas after the show. They all signed my levi denim jacket. That drummer Stuart....total badass. Great, talented dudes.
1:32 Particularly fan of this moment when a music madman can't resist joining the group in front of him, even if it's not planned ! With the bassist and drummer turning their heads towards him in pleasure sign. A great connection !
This album was/is SO GOOD...the WHOLE album. At this time I was into Morrissey, The Smiths, Social Distortion, Front 242, Stone Roses, Beastie Boys and Iron Maiden...diversity. Excellent live performance and I love the fade to commercial with the TWIN TOWERS skyline image...should have just rebuilt both of them.
+F1JV Ya, I recall Matthew said people were telling him "why don't you write some more upbeat songs" after the darker Altered Beast. The product was this great collection of yet more dark lyrics, cleverly hidden in big power pop sound. Coming off two previous successful records, he seemed to still be in the whirlwind. I'll never forget meeting him at the time at a Best Buy in MN and having him sign my CD. Afterward he raced through the store grabbing literally armfuls of music for himself before they rushed him out. He told an assistant "don't worry, I'll pay for these myself". Great times - thanks Matt.
What an awesome live performance. I heard this song for the first time today. It was the opening song for a movie I was watching. I was so totally blown away.
You don't know how you move me deconstruct me and consume me. I'm all used up, I'm out of luck I am star struck By something in your eyes that is keeping my hope alive. so Matthew hires the trifecta of NYC guitar slingers in LLOYD, QUINE and JULIEN here was he part of the Another Roadside Attraction band? I donut remember.
He really pissed off his #1 Robert Quine with the mix of this album. Quine was the real shredder but was also a bit touchy about "being mixed out of the album ". Julian, also an ex-Voidoid, was no slouch, nor was Lloyd. Great songs made greater by killer bands around him.
I missed watching that night but they ROCKED 🎸 🎸 🎸 so HARD ebem Paul SCheifer was JAMMING OUT. The perforance eas do live and real OT ROCKED. KUDOS Matjew Sweet and band.
They are not going out of style anytime soon. The guitar is one of the great expressive instruments, along with the piano, violin, sax, and synthesizer.
Got here out of curiosity after watching the original MTv video ..but dang, that drummer is solid. And the reprise-style outro works much better in this live performance than it does on the album track imo
2023 and still listening to this song 🎸
Matthew is criminally under appreciated.
It’s 2024 and this still makes me happy!
BOTTLE AND CORK '95..I was there and he was awesome!!
No one wrote hooks like Mathew Sweet. His voice is great too it just perfectly matches his music.
He still does!
This song is at least 25 years old and it still kicks ass. Love to crank this after a few wines.. Totally love his vocals and the guitars..You just simply do not get music like this anymore.
My type a girl
You simply do Holly
90s music just kicked ass. So much fun groundbreaking you can rock out to it you could feel the emotions.
@@charlessale409 yeah, like what? Mainstream radio sucks. They play the same 10 songs over and over. 90's were just awesome. If you didn't live through it then sorry you missed out bud.
I saw them do this song on the Tonight Show way back when Jay Leno was the guest host for Carson. They kicked total ass on that performance as well.
This is ...easily...one of the all time champion power pop songs.....ever. Just perfect.
Agreed!
HELL YES
Power Pop at it’s finest!
Something is wrong when a song this perfect is not a huge hit. I’ve been singing it since it was released.
It was pretty big then, top 50 pop hit and reached the 2nd spot on the rock charts. But I agree it should’ve topped some charts. So damn perfect
It was a huge hit, reached #2 on... One of the charts, I can't remember which... It just didn't have the staying power b/c Oasis released "What's the Story, Morning Glory" in the fall & MTV started playing nothing but BritPop
This is the Matthew Sweet I remember and love. I bought 100% Fun in the summer of 95.
I always thought Matthew Sweet was underrated really. I dug his sounds..and the world brushed him off after a couple semi hits. Dude was good.
Hey that's two more hits than most of us will ever have and the thrill of being on Letterman etc. 90s music was just awesome!!
Probably because he refuses to tour anything other than flyover U.S. states.
He reminded me of a more updated Greg Kihn of the 90's..
I was at this show! Sat second row with a few friends. It was awesome to see them.
That's very cool. Hard to describe but those were exciting times musically and culturally. I saw them at First Ave then. This song started me on the road of rabid MS collecting most of which I still have.

You're right about Sweet/Lloyd, but I think it's Ivan Julian playing here.
It's definitely Ivan Julian, not Richard Lloyd.
8ittermand it us Ivan Julian.
Who's still gonna be jamming this in 2019?
jerryhdzNtexas I do!

Still jamming to it in 2020!
Wish he would bring his tours to Tulsa
jerryhdzNtexas and beyond.

"I'm sick of myself when I look at you"- What a brutally perfect line about the pain of unrequited love.
something in your eyes that keeping my hopes alive...
Awesome! And the legendary Ivan Julian on lead guitar!!!
One of the great Late Show performances, where the artist delivers a version of a song that tops an already magnificent studio version.
Brendan Barry you said it they rocked oit that great song better than the album. Good ear for music dude. 👍
Saw Matthew driving on the L.I.E., went absolutely crazy waving, screaming, pounding on the windows in a friend's back seat. I think I made him laugh
One of my favorite songs of the 90's and one of the best

he got sick of the sweetness i think
I saw him open for The Jawhawks open for Soul Asylum around 1995 at the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena in Green Bay. It was awesome.
I love that they did both false stops. Those aren’t a joke, they’re PART OF THE SONG.
Love this tune, and this just rocks.
When they cut to the shot of the Twin Towers after the performance, made my heart jump for a second.
Then I remembered - oh yeah, '95.
Great song on an awesome album. Rocked it on the roads in my little Cavalier back in the day. Now to figure out how he popped into my head in 2020🤔
I remember seeing that thinking this heaviest thing I ever saw on late night tv. Amazing fade to commercial with the twin towers at dusk.
I almost referred to that and posted, but you are here.
Saw him in Ventura '95 with my soon to be ex-wife. LOUD and fantastic. Obligatory autograph outside.
This reminds me a lot of a Sugar or Mould song.

Great call!!
When this album came out, I bought it pretty quickly. Great pop-rock.
Still listening in 2024
He sounds (and looks actually) great in this performance.
Saw them the same week this was taped at the Academy of Music and met the fellas after the show. They all signed my levi denim jacket.
That drummer Stuart....total badass. Great, talented dudes.
It is the 10th time I am listening to this song today. And I am still looking forward to the 11th !
Saw him at the Ventura Theater when this album came out. Excellent. Louder than loud.
The perfect pick me up song ever!!!!!!! Brilliant tune smith, timeless quality in his craft.
MATTHEW IS SO TREMENDOUSLY UNDERATED. MY WIFE GETS MOIST EVERYTIME I PUT HIS MUSIC ON, SO THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!

Matthew should be a very big star.
Damn, was that tasty. Strum, strum, strum. Noise blast! Loved it.
ROCKIN!!!! Go Pauly , man one of the best performances on Letterman ive seen. For sure.
Oh and the drummer keep him away from the cola you know what im saying Mel.
Notice the Twin Towers, at the end of the song......never forget.
I miss New York in the 90’s. Music was good and we still had our Towers.
He’s a special kind of cat. Matthew Sweet is amazing
yessir tensedup. this is a ripping performance.....great great album and band..100% fun.... and the 3 times ending always kicks my ass!!!

Yes very underrated performer vibrant energy that one can call real musicians !!

Better than the album version, surprisingly
Much Music used to pump this video like 5x a day easily
saw him on this tour. those were the days.
Saw him last night. He still kills.
Great performance, but Matthew's vocals seem muddy and low in the mix.
Takes me back to some fun days
What a fun song!

Love this tune
Saw them at capital city speedway, with the the tragically hip, all day concert, when like 20-21' now 40'
fab ending

Why is rock 0% fun today? Oh well, we always have this!

Great tune.
Thank you! I've been looking for this forever!

Would I be correct in assuming "100% Fun" was inspired by Kurt Cobain's suicide note?
Yes
Is that Josh Freese on drums?
