I think its pretty rare for a great songwriter and musician like Matthew to have no professional jealousy and ask virtuoso's like Quine and Richard Lloyd to play with him and make his songs and performances even better. It certainly elevated this album from great to a classic, and it's well earned.
I've always thought the coolest thing about Matthew Sweet was the phenomenal musicians he was able to recruit to play on his records. The respect seemed to go both ways. They respected his song writing. He knew that their musicianship would take his songs to another level.
I saw them all play at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the mid '90s. Michael Penn played there too. Then like a decade later he was playing our local dive bar in San Diego. Then next time a bigger venue. I wish he would come to San Diego again.
Watch how Robert Quine just runs roughshod all OVER "Girlfriend" terrorizing that guitar, and then caresses that Byrds-ian melody out of "I've Been Waiting". True master, RIP.
Robert Quine and Terry Kath. Their guitar styles couldn’t be more different, but the thing they have in common is their otherworldly talent and how tragically underrated they both are.
i love me some Matthew Sweet...but if you listen to his first album, then the stuff with Quine and Lloyd...its night and day. Pretty sure Quine taught himself.
@@DaveAnchovies Yeah, a well known story that as a student Bob followed the Velvet Underground around San Fran recording them on an early version of the cassette recorder. Bob learned to to play by listening to those tapes thousands of times and was later be employed by Lou Reed himself as lead guitarist in his band during the Blue Mask era. Quine's VU tapes were officially released some years ago.
One of the very rare late night show clips where the cameraperson knew what the fuck they were doing and actually filmed the amazing guitarist actually playing instead of filming their face or the crowd or some shit. Preserved for posterity. Well done!
Props to whoever posted this. Nice audio and video quality. Quine soloing takes a great song and takes it to a whole other level. Sweet could do no wrong during this period. Still is making top notch quality music.
Glad you enjoyed it - all of the content on this channel came from my own tapes, and were also transferred by me. Thanks for the note of appreciation, and, yes, Quine was one of a kind [and that Sweet guy is no slouch, either] ;)
Matthew Sweet, Richard Lloyd and Bob Quine are the reason I even picked up a guitar. Its a dream of mine to play with Lloyd or Sweet, even just once. I wish Quine were still around cause he was the absolute best. Terribly underrated Also, I don't know if many people know Matthew is an expert multi-instrumentalist. He literally plays everything on his songs before he has someone else come in and spruce it up a bit.
Yep he had guitars covered. I believe he let them get on with it. I think things blew up when he and the record company, started to plan records for commercial impact ( not a criticism)
Just getting into Quine Could you tell me the full names of _____ Lloyd & _______ Julian. I appreciate Quine with Lou Reed, so I’m especially curious who the other 2 are. Thanks for helping passing down some rock knowledge to a rookie.
@@earthsucks9555 Richard Lloyd played with Television and was a go to sessions man, He played the intro on Girlfriend and Quine played the solo. Ivan Julian played with Quine in the Voidoids and has been a fixture on the New York music scene for decades
Man, 31-years later and this guys voice, songwriting, and musicality still pop. The song-craft is cool. The guitarists solos are crazy good/tasteful, and the backing vocals are great. So many cool elements to this band. Im a fan now for sure.
gregalabama From one (Old School Dead Head) to another... Yes Dear Brother. I Love(d) this album. Was Grateful to see them at the Rivy in Chicago in 92. Totally different musicians. WAY WAY better
Let's also note that on bass is Sara Lee (Gang Of Four), and rhythm guitar is handled by Peter Holsapple (The dB's and later, REM)...what a dream line-up. Quine is incredible here.
+Brian Friel also Pat Mastelotto (Mr. Mister, King Crimson, XTC's Oranges and Lemons album) on drums... but it's not Peter Holsapple on acoustic guitar. I forget the guy's name...
Kind of a new wave supergroup. I was lucky enough to see Quine with the Voidoids, Sara Lee with Gang of Four and Fripp's League of Gentlemen, Holsapple with the db's and Mastelotto with King Crimson and Stick Men, but I've never seen Matthew Sweet!
To my ears, Robert Sweet is Robert Sweet AND Robert Quine. Sweet’s songs and voice combined with Quine’s unique, versatile guitar work created a chemistry that was heads above any other power pop/alternative music of its era.
Mathew Sweet is a very talented artist but I bet he wished he had a dollar for every time somebody has said to him - "Wow you played with Robert Quine"
Just found this while looking for vids of the late great Robert Quine (lead guitar), and what do you know, that's Pat Mastelotto on drums! Future King Crimson member! Nitpick: the lead guitar could have been mixed a bit higher. It's a bit drowned out by Sweet's rhythm guitar.
Andy Gower Nice tidbit on the drummer's journey to where he wound up! I just tried to share the performance of King Crimson on Conan O'Brien, but it is blocked....As for the mix: that's the way it was recorded on the night it aired. I don't mess with settings too much, other than maxing the scan rate for both the video and audio :)
What's for afters? No criticism to you for the mix! It's great to see musicians you love on TV, but it's so rare that they get the mix right for the broadcast. Thanks for the upload!
The song's great, the band's tight, and the mix is good but goddam, the TV producers don't know how to put the camera on the performers at the right time. I like seeing a drummer at much as the next guy, but please keep the camera on Robert Quine while he's playing his solo.
I’d rather hear Ric Menck on drums and Paul Chastain on Bass. This performance featured the TV studio rhythm section who learned the song for this performance only.
The Letterman performance was better -- the other one of the two with Quine live -- but we're stuck with the Miller one, because we can't have nice things.
These are not the guys I seen with Mathew in 92. No where near as good. Those cats just smoked. One of the best shows I've ever seen, & I'm an old school Dead Head. The lead guitarist was a light skinned black dude. He was amazing. It was in Chicago at the Riviera. They played L7's pretend that we're dead & the Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows. They kicked that A$$. Crazy memories. Holly- you remember?
That would have been Ivan Julian playing lead guitar, in the line-up you described. Great guitarist in his own right. You should check out Robert Quine playing a bit more. Exceptional guitarist.
Lead guitar was complete shit. Like it was his first time hearing the song. Off beat, poor phrasing, and plenty of choked notes. What a blown opportunity to shine over a great song.
Stopped by just for the Robert Quine solos: Did not disappoint!
smokin!
Me too, here for Quine. Such sweet playing on “I’ve been waiting.” Not what I associate with him.

"I've Been Waiting" is sublime.
Robert Quine was a gift from God.
One of the finest examples of Bob Quine doing what he does on the 'Tube.
Easily one of the best albums from the 90's. Awesome. Stands the test of time.
Reissued by intervention on vinyl

One of my favorite guitarists, even now. He truly sounds like a live wire.
Nobody sounded like him before, and nobody's sounded like him since. A truly singular sound on the guitar.
Robert Quine was ridiculous...and, most of the time he's using a Strat through some shitty Peavy monoblock amp too
RIP

Quinn’s tearing it up in the solo, what an amazing guitarist!
Quine looks like a high school math teacher, but behind the scenes he was about as rock n roll/out of control as they come.
I always thought he looked like either Hunter S. Thompson, or Jim Lahey from Trailer Park Boys.
He was a lawyer.
