So right. Her strum is ridiculously powerful. She's a Malcolm Young/James Hetfield level rhythm guitar genius, who can easily bust out solos if she wants but usually focuses on bring the backbone of the song.
Got to see Nancy play that intro at an outdoor summer concert in Seattle back in '77, seemed like at the time that she went on for five minutes. It was awesome!!! Best intro ever! There's still nothing like it!
Am I the only one who believes that while there are MANY great female vocalists, Ann Wilson is the GREATEST female rock vocalist ever. She has a voice, range, and can sing sweetly soft, and then shift to "Arena Rock" power vocals effortlessly. Even today, no one is in her league.
the only one that rivals her was Linda Ronstadt..who had a different style and was cleaner sounding..Ann was powerful and so fit well with what Heart was doing at that time..
THIS WAS MY AND MY LATE HUSBAND'S SONG. HE PICKED IT!!! WE WERE CRAZY ABOUT EACH OTHER!!! FRIENDS/LOVERS/SOUL MATES. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN AND SEE HIM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I see this old footage I see how alive people looked, and just what incredible creatures humans are, and so beautiful it almost makes me want to cry.
I just got goosebumps reading this because I felt the same way. Just imagining what it would be like, to be there in that moment, witnessing that level of poetry and beauty- raw human spirit being expressed. It's inspiring to watch these amazing levels of professionalism and creativity. It's inspiring to see humans fully living to their potential, and expressing it so beautifully... To create such vibrations and share it with the world... Truly remarkable.
Music seemed to be so much truer then too. Not like today where "musicians" spend too much time over-perfecting their music. It was better back then, there was a certain flaw to it that made it more beautiful and true.
Few things are cooler to a teenager girl (especially one growing up in the mid-80's/early 90's ) than seeing a woman take charge of a guitar. Nancy is all over that thing. Love these guys so much.
I just watched Ann and Nancy do Stairway to Heaven at the 2012 tribute to Led Zeppelin event and then I watched this and I feel like I was born into the greatest time for music in human history and life is too short!! I love music so much!!!!!! I was born in 1969.,,,
+Christopher Range I was born in 1953 and there is no comparison of the music from the 60's and 70"s to what is called music today. This song and Stairway to Heaven will still be played as "Classic Rock" one hundred years from now.
I was comparing music from ,60's and 70's to today's music, not to the 80:s and 90's. 80's & 90's had good music also and will be remembered long after today's music (if you can call it music) has been forgotten. Now saying that, there is some music from this era that is good, but the music from the second half of the 20th century was far better than most music today.
Amazing, she really is like Robert Plant or Janis Joplin: using all that expressivity and wide range of her voice like an instrument, sometimes doesn't even need lyrics
Sometimes I can't believe a song like this exists. Like it never existed before this. And they did it. It's legendary. I can't imagine my life without this song. That is a fact. That's some real music appreciation.
Saw them in Lethbridge, Alberta, C1979, was 15 years old. I didn't have a driver's license but my GF's daddy said, "Just don't kill my daughter" and he dropped his car keys into my hand. HEART put on a party in the countryside after the concert and we drove there. All the drinks were free and I became a man that night. Wished I could turn back the clock and put that moment on repeat.
I don't understand why you think anyone would give a shit about your 'experience' in 1979 it's your life keep it to yourself instead of spreading it like cancer over youtube
God these little girls make we want to cry. Old man that I am, they filled my heart with joy. There is never enough good things to say about Heart. God bless those little girls. God has a special place for you
I got to see Heart three times with about a ten year time span between each show they sounded flawless each time. Heart ranks in my top 10 favorite shows ever seen.
Saturday Night Special was what made me long for the weekends. Playing live I saw them three time and always found a sweet lover to take home; it had that affect on every one!
I am so glad this performance was recorded. She was absolutely singing from the bottom of her soul and making it look effortless. I can think of nobody else performing with that kind of confidence, intensity and passion for the music. One of a kind!
This song. This song when it hit airwaves was hot. I 'll never forget how my very first girlfriend played this for me in her bedroom one day and we made out to it. It is a memory I'll cherish forever. Cheryl Siraco wherever you are thank you. I wish it could have worked out. At 3:45 Ann draws some fire from somewhere and totally lights up the song. She is probably the most attractive female lead singer ever, not just on the outside, but on the inside with what are one of the very best if not the best vocals ever. Seriously, she is the complete package, beauty, a killer voice and a mesmerizing stage presence.
Ann is the best singer on this planet!!! growing up in the 70's in Seattle we were all proud of them!! the first 4 records will always be my favorite!!! Keep Rocking Heart!!!
She really is too! Have u seen them at the Led Zeppelin concert special of a song she/heart covered for them from just a cpl years back??gives me chills everytime. Look it up on here.
Ann seemed to sound even better live than on vinyl. Many singers, including myself in the day, (despite monitors), tend to sing either too flat or overcompensate and sing too high when performing live, Ann seems "right on the mark" with absolute clarity! What a great voice. And by the way Heart did some Zeppelin better than even Zep did.
I was 20 at the time they first broke big. A friend from Vancouver(where they did a lot of shows in early days)told me they did mostly Zep covers when they first started.
Though it is true, I must chuckle at all the 70s and 80s peeps, who say 'no auto-tune', no lip syncing etc...we, who lived through this time have great memories. Yes, music has changed SO much. Young artists today are so well versed in the 'game' and seem to keep their distance with all their handlers. I am sure there have always been artists with huge egos, but in watching Ann and Nancy, the music and performance is just raw and real!!
And there is the Beatles, the group everyone got excited to start a group over. Either as a group or as solo artists it didn't matter. The Wilson's patterned their music after them, so did the Doors and every group that came along was spawned by that night in February 1964. The Beatles wrote The Rolling Stones first hit. Nancy Wilson and Ann Wilson understood this and that's why the ladies are legends.
Anne's voice is simply amazing and coming from that beautiful face... (heavy sigh), Nancy is wonderful, the lead guitar work is unique and very interesting, Durocher's drums are perfect but as a bassist, I've always marveled at the thought process that had to have been driving Andes' bass lines. Those notes are so original and right on the money! When I hear our studio work I hear snippets of lines I could only have soaked from listening to Mark.
Unlike today's sh*t.. no audio tune, no lip sync, live TV... no second chances.. effin EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This song and her voice gives me chills Up until HEART no one saw chicks rock out like that. People loved it and the ladies were not hard to look at either
God this is a throwback to a great and simple time. I was a teenager in '77 cruising on every Saturday night in my '69 Camaro...blasting this song. Love the Luke Skywalker guitarist. Star Wars came out that year and captured the imagination of everyone...I bet I saw it 10 times. Girls, Star Wars and great music...1977 was a special year in my memory.
Yup. Tooo much fun! I told my kids they couldn't have had as much fun as I did growing up in Houston in the 70's. Edit: I left scars on Galveston Island in a subaru brat that hurricane Ike finally cleared up.
At 3:45 on this video, Ann belts a note, and it's really HOW she does it that excites me. I've got a renewed appreciation for this band that I grew up with......getting old sucks, but they still can rock like nobody's business!
All the above are right. This is among the greatest lead intros. And there are soooo many. So many, so good. Too many to even acknowledge, let alone try to name. So, if I may, this intro rocked then, rocks now, and if someone compiles an intro list, I will listen, lift a drink, and enjoy MUSIC, regardless if I agree or think, shit, I could do that. But I know I can't. Toast to the music, my harmonic friends.
I just wish everyone could understand the effect this had on 14-15 girls in my day & age!! These women were so amazing! We were in awe of their talent!
damn. I'm 30 so this is my first time seeing this . but I must say I'm not a heart fan but I love this song. and Ann Wilson was a stone cold Fox back in the day
Nobody can wail like Ann honey! I've been loving Heart fo 40 years and am so glad some you young'ens are catching on. ;) Have you checked out any of their Led Zep covers? Oh my.... and when you have time, listen to the album "Little Queen" from start to finish. It's just fantastic.
Well said Kimberley O, I have been listening for nearly as long as you. Little Queen absolutely needs to be listened to from start to finish, with a glass or two of wine (but not white lightning and wine, that would be too much).
Hunter sharp I'm 55 years old and absolutely love their early music, especially their song Minstral Wind!! By far,Ann Wilson hands down is the Greatest female Rock vocalist and Nancy the Greatest female guitarist Ever!!
Damn, but that's a beautiful and unique acoustic guitar... This was a couple months before *Star Wars* hit theaters, but the electric guitar player sure has the Luke Skywalker look down. Maybe he'd seen the trailers? ;) Ah, before AutoTune, when we still expected singers to sound like human beings with actual souls.
I have been listening to heart since I'm a kid, and was always a fan, but for some reason their songs touch me on a different level now. Never grows old, and what a voice!
Adam Steinberg yeah well I can understand your sentiment there when you're young and everything brother new, but you have to keep those memories going in life or you just get stuck in memorizing about a certain time frame. And it seems always be when we were younger. I used to do that a lot and I said why can't I do that even now when I'm 60 but I mean this started 20 years ago I changed my way of thinking and now I have beautiful memories not Only then, all through my life! but I understand what you're saying.
It was long before my time. I feel like I missed a special era. Then again, I was around for the late stages of MTV before they stopped playing music videos. So I have that going for me, which is nice.
Sad when you hear stories about some of the crap Ann had to go through regarding her weight. She was so beautiful here... and with her voice, good god. What a combination!
I've heard a lot of female singers who shift gears in a song from normal to high volume, all-out, but nobody does it quite like Ann Wilson in this song.
Who else thinks she & Linda Rondstadt look alike in that time & would have made a fabulous duet!?!? Best guitar player ever, Nancy Wilson! God bless these rock and roll women!!! ROCK ON! ❤🎸❤👭🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏😇👍👌✌☝
A lot of what you said is true, but Nancy is not even close to being the best guitarist ever. She never even played lead on any of their songs. She wouldn't make it as the guitarist in most other bands back then so she should be thankful her sister had possibly the best female rock voice - ever!
Zhaydi Yvonni everybody thought I was crazy when I said that and I thought to myself how come nobody ever brings that up am I the only person that thinks that well lo and behold here you are!
No Libbies yeah she wasn't the best guitars back then she has really improved her craft! But yeah back in the early 70s and through the 70s she seemed like she was fumbling around a little bit! But now big big difference.
Took my sister to see Heart for her birthday in 2011, and I scored front row tickets. The Wilson sisters were amazing! Ann's voice is in a very rare class.I was wearing my Queen tee shirt, and half way through the show, Ann looks at me and says "I love your shirt." then she says "I miss Freddie, he was the sweetest person you could ever meet."I had heard that she was going to do a duet with Freddie, but it never got a chance to happen. Too bad, she is definitely one of the few who could have meshed well with the great Mercury!
Unbelievable talent, simplistic vocals, no special lights, fireworks, special effects, just two beautiful talented ladies, simple lyrics, great band. No tons of hair gel or spandex. Call me old fashioned but I was a teenager when they were in their prime. Madonna and Miley can't even come close.....
Absolutely brilliant. I had the vinyl back in the day and we had an album sleeve to muse over.......Ann sounds and looks amazing. Thanks for the share. Shanti Shanti
I have a feeling at least half of the problems in the world today are because the music sucks. If you grew up from the mid 50's through the 1980's you were blessed to see and hear some of the finest musical acts to ever grace a stage. We were the lucky ones.
Unbelievable. Every time I hear this I get tingles up and down my spine. Ann Wilson is one dangerous chanteuse -- she loves you to pieces then loves the pieces.
Nobody talking about Nancy? Come on that intro KILLS me every time
Best female guitar player
I am totally here for her into to this song.
Amazing intro, she really don't get the respect she deserves!
FRRRR
Every time
1:07 gives me chills every time with those rapid, sweeping up-downstrokes. Nancy is a phenomenal guitarist.
I'm glad someone else appreciated that. That blew my mind when I spotted it.
So right. Her strum is ridiculously powerful. She's a Malcolm Young/James Hetfield level rhythm guitar genius, who can easily bust out solos if she wants but usually focuses on bring the backbone of the song.

yes I think she is absolutely the best. altogether heart is the best rock band with a female vocalist. pat benetar is next in line for me
+Joseph Rivett You're spot on! The best!!!
What about Joan Jett or Stevie nixes
+Austin Breen Thy're good but not as good as Ann. Why has no one mentioned Janis Joplin or Aretha Franklin? Or Pat Benatar.
the only one that rivals her was Linda Ronstadt..who had a different style and was cleaner sounding..Ann was powerful and so fit well with what Heart was doing at that time..
Ann flips a switch, and her vocals go into the stratosphere....a rock goddess.
THIS WAS MY AND MY LATE HUSBAND'S SONG. HE PICKED IT!!! WE WERE CRAZY ABOUT EACH OTHER!!! FRIENDS/LOVERS/SOUL MATES. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN AND SEE HIM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How are you doing Melissa
she died
When I see this old footage I see how alive people looked, and just what incredible creatures humans are, and so beautiful it almost makes me want to cry.
Awesome music and footage
Agreed! How she belted out those lyrics with so much passion like it's no one's business!
I just got goosebumps reading this because I felt the same way. It was always made from the heart, the rawness and emotion always sends shivers down my spine.
I don't think Nancy ever got the cred she deserved as a guitarist. She was (and still is) so damn good.
That kick by Nancy at the 5:08 mark should be immortalized in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in a statue as a focal point!
Thank you God that I was born in the 50's so I lived through all of the GREAT music!!!!
How are you doing Susan
Ann is so beautiful and her vocals are matchless. A jaw dropping performance!
Few things are cooler to a teenager girl (especially one growing up in the mid-80's/early 90's ) than seeing a woman take charge of a guitar. Nancy is all over that thing. Love these guys so much.
The Runaways….
This version of Heart is phenomenal. There will never be another female vocalist like Ann Wilson!!
It was awesome to be 17 in 1977 and listening to awesome music.
Agree
i was too high school
IT WAS AWESOME JUST TO BE ALIVE DURING THE SUPER 70'S. MAN, HOW I IS MISS THIS ERA. HAD LOTS OF FUN AS A KID GROWING UP IN THIS DECADE!!!!!.
Im just 15 now and i love classic rock, i wish i was alive then and could see this stuff live
Pretty cool to be 19 too.
I just watched Ann and Nancy do Stairway to Heaven at the 2012 tribute to Led Zeppelin event and then I watched this and I feel like I was born into the greatest time for music in human history and life is too short!! I love music so much!!!!!! I was born in 1969.,,,
+Jerry Jocoy our time rivals the classics era in the history of music. only we won't know for sure, as it takes a couple hundred years to prove it.
+Jerry Jocoy I was born two years before you. I didn't see the 2012 tribute to Led Zeppelin. But I definitely agree with you.
+Christopher Range I was born in 1953 and there is no comparison of the music from the 60's and 70"s to what is called music today. This song and Stairway to Heaven will still be played as "Classic Rock" one hundred years from now.

This, like everything I say, is jumt my opinion.
Nancy is the absolute epitome of a true queens of bards and Anne's voice kicks so much ass it is ridiculous.

Damn...that voice...those guitar skills....awesome. Plus, Ann and Nancy looked so cute back then.
When she belted it out, there was nothing like her.
Don Bagley the girl still got it too lol
One-of-a-kind singer. Absolutely nobody can sing like this. It’s just mind-blowing!
This has got to be one of the greatest rock anthems of all time! Ann Wilson definitely in the pantheon of Rock Goddesses!

Ann Wilson is what you call a singer.
Ann Wilson’s voice is absolutely amazing. Unreal. One of the best.
Whole band was great, guitar players, but Nancy’s opening riff stunning, then Ann’s vocals are mesmerizing-can’t get enough!

Welcome son.... this is what REAL musicians look like. LOL
Lmao. I've since listened to more Heart. And they are really good. Alone is one of the best power ballads of all time
Nobody can wail like Ann honey!
The greatest female rock band of all time.
She crushes it , with those vocals...goosebumps
Damn, but that's a beautiful and unique acoustic guitar...
This was a couple months before *Star Wars* hit theaters, but the electric guitar player sure has the Luke Skywalker look down. Maybe he'd seen the trailers? ;)
Ah, before AutoTune, when we still expected singers to sound like human beings with actual souls.
that explains alot. Heart was using the force.
It's an Ovation
It's an Ovation Adamas. The only pieces of wood are the neck and bridge.
Plus Warner Brothers
Ann was very beautiful here when she was young. What I also love is her amazing vocal range. This and "Straight On" are my favorites.
The Best Version of Heart ever !!!!!👍
Man o Man I grew up watching Wolfman Jack and Midnight special!!!!!
+Ellen Cox yeah baby,, the wolfman on the golden great ... 98!
It was long before my time. I feel like I missed a special era. Then again, I was around for the late stages of MTV before they stopped playing music videos. So I have that going for me, which is nice.
The 70's music was the best of all times
Like Bobby Sherman and the Partridge Family? Every era has had good and bad music, it's just that we remember the good stuff from older eras more.
Nope . The creativity went down hill after the 70s, keep in context , real music
Eric Fox
Agreed. So many great acts in that decade. PinkFloyd, Zeppelin, Tull, APP, Super Tramp, ELP. ELO, Grand Funk RR, the list goes on and on.
Sad when you hear stories about some of the crap Ann had to go through regarding her weight. She was so beautiful here... and with her voice, good god. What a combination!
she is extrodinary. she makes the guitar talk
지금봐도 멋있네요. 그당시 인기는 상상도 못할정도 입니다.
Anne was so cute back then with her little bangs.
Jimmy Winn I would have been thrilled to join her in one of her little bangs.
Jimmy Winn i thought she was pretty damn hot then myself.
CHER copied Tina Turner with the mouth and tongue expressions.
Wish I could have bangs 👴
I'm a kid of the '80s, but, man, the '70s had some fantastic, passionate performers.
The Midnight Special...how great was that show. Loved it. Happy to have been around to see it!
She does resemble Linda Ronstadt...always has...💋 💘
A lot of what you said is true, but Nancy is not even close to being the best guitarist ever. She never even played lead on any of their songs. She wouldn't make it as the guitarist in most other bands back then so she should be thankful her sister had possibly the best female rock voice - ever!
A lot of women adopted this look at that time. My first wife looked very similar like a mix of Nancy and Linda.
Just saw them last night and they were amazing! Ann still got it at 69. Glad to have seen these rock legends!
One of the very few voices around that needs absolutely no effects to sound perfect. BTW Karen Carpenter was in that category too.
+stereopolice So is Debbie Harry
Alizee Defan oh yeah Debbie Harry is one of my favorite rock singers too. I think she is in her 60s now and she looks fabulous.
+Carrie Ann Luikens She is 70 and still turns heads
And Linda ronstatd
Debbie Harry??? LMAO!!! Do not compare her to Ann Wilson or Karen Carpenter(AMAZING VOICE!!!)...She did look good though.
I saw Heart in concert back in '77--they were amazing. Still are. These two chicks rocked everyone everywhere, and still do.
Saw them a few years ago in Seattle and they are just as awesome live as in any video. Real talent!!!
This music has aged very well!
The electric guitar boys really gave this song punch. What a great vehicle for Ann’s vocals and lyrics.
This is deffo their best live “video” performance by far in my opinion. Strong, stunning and flawless!
Early Heart is the best. Their later stuff is really hit or miss and never even close to as good as this.
I was a toddler in their prime and would happily take Ann and Nancy any day over the crap nowadays!
This was 1977 - they did the big hair and spandex in the 1980's, who are you trying to kid?
My goddessess Ann's voice and Nancy's guitar prowess! Such artists❤❤❤
Absolutely brilliant. I had the vinyl back in the day and we had an album sleeve to muse over.......Ann sounds and looks amazing. Thanks for the share.
Shanti Shanti
Just rediscovered this absolute classic and I am loving it all over again
I have a feeling at least half of the problems in the world today are because the music sucks. If you grew up from the mid 50's through the 1980's you were blessed to see and hear some of the finest musical acts to ever grace a stage. We were the lucky ones.
Man, she can really really sing, like for real.
Unbelievable. Every time I hear this I get tingles up and down my spine. Ann Wilson is one dangerous chanteuse -- she loves you to pieces then loves the pieces.
Ann is with no doubt a great vocalist.....but why no props for Nancy's guitar playing?
John Fuentes
Put an acoustic guitar in Nancy's hands and magic happens!
There are tons of props for Nancy's playing. I know this is an old post, but I just felt compelled to comment.
She's a beast on the guitar.
I wanted to learn that intro but my fingers melted at the middle of the riff
LOL KEEP TRYIN U CAN DO IT!
LOL KEEP TRYIN U CAN DO IT!
Practice-long hours
It means you ain't practiced enough.
I remember sitting on the couch with my brother in Gainesville Fla. watching this. And we were high as hell...lol.
I used to watch "The Midnight Special" every weekend! One of my favorite shows back then. :)
