- Matthew Sweet, the pride and joy of Lincoln, Nebraska, played one of the biggest XRT shows ever back in 1993 when he headlined the XRT Free Fourth of July Concert. Crowd estimates are notoriously unreliable, but most observers place the audience well in excess of 2 billion. (I said they were unreliable!)
He joined us ahead of his City Winery show to teach us a thing or two about his hit, “Girlfriend.” Find the Sweet spot in this video.

Matthew nailed it with "Girlfriend"!
My band covered Girlfriend back in the '90s. Mathew Sweet is one of my favorite songwriters. He's got an awesome ear for a hook.
don't get many guitar tutorials straight from the source on youtube. Awesome. Thanks, Matthew!
One of my favorite songs to come out of the 90's. Fantastic guitar tone.
I came to learn the intro and solos, but I came out with more respect for Matthew Sweet.
Robert Quine kills on the Girlfriend album.
One of the great solos of all time right there. What a sound...sansamp magic...minor over the major vibe, then bendy madness up the duty end.
Seriously, what an absolute master class in lead guitar playing. R.I.P.
Yes! I discovered Quine through the girlfriend album. I love his work with Lou Reed. One of the greatest and most underappreciated guitar players ever.
I never even knew Quine's name until recently. When it first came out I did know that lead was masterful guitar playing at it's finest. Phenomenal rock and roll this song.
That whole album is perfect from start to finish. Great songs. Great guitars.
Nice to see it broken down. I might be able to get this right in a few weeks.
Can't imagine how someone convinced you to do this, but thank you. Like another person commented - what a gift. Also, from one Athens person to another - Go Dawgs!
One of the definitive power pop songs of the 90's as is the whole album.
Matthew - STILL one of my fav songs ever. (and I'm picky). Thanks brutha!
What a gift!!! Thank you Matthew!! This was terrific! Loved the sound!
I feel this is one of the best songs of the 90s, if not the best.
Wow, great lesson on a great song. Is it just me or is this song extraordinary. It never fails to grab me. First, it's a great song. Second, the vocals and lyrics are...perfect together? I love the voice and feel the lyrics, even when I HAVE a girlfriend. Third and maybe most importantly, the amazing lead guitar that weaves through the whole song. This guy plays with such soul and the lead is WAY up in the mix. Fourth, the recording engineer imbues the whole mix with an aliveness you rarely hear. I believe Matthew when he sings this. The rhythm guitar is light and tasty like champagne. And that singing lead all up in your face!
Thank you very much for breaking down the song for everyone to learn! It's one of my all-time favorites. Very kind of you! Wish you would have belted out some of those lyrics. You have a great voice!
Fantastic song. Great album too.
Great song, but Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd made it perfect
I’ve been doing my own half-assed cover of this for years now, but it’s only been by ear, it’s nice to know I’ve been pretty damn close to what the man himself was doing this whole time!
Love this song!
I love this it has motivated me both to cover the weekend bag and so my own stuff. Thanks
He's right, it's a great song!
Good tune Matt! Thanks for the lesson. I'm gonna play it with my band :-)
Thanks for this Matthew
Great song with amazing groove and guitar tone...I discovered it in Guitar Hero and have since learned to play guitar and am in a cover band. Thank u Mathew!!
The whole album ...some catchy S#$T !!!!!!!
Robert Quinn!!! I loved that guy.
sweet indeed!
LOVE IT!
Love the sound of the Novo guitar! Thanks for lesson! We use to play Sick Of Myself but that's everybody's Matt cover in Ct! I'm gonna present this to my band! Thanks!
This is a Fano guitar... same guy behind both (Dennis Fano) but after selling interest in his company he didn't like working with the co-owners - from what I've read - so he pulled out and founded Novo, which Matthew uses now. Must suck to have to relinquish your name as a part of a company...
Thanks, saved me from asking!
Worthy!
Thankyou xrt and Mathew Sweet. You could play lead to the whole song in F#...I really dont like playing other peoples stuff..This song in a rare exception..Love jamming lead to it...Quines gritty nasty tone is perfect fit
I saw him last night and it's kinda funny, but I'm a bass player and used to do this song back in the 90s. Well, his bass player last night wasn't playing the bass line right (bass goes root 5 on the C# after the word "girlfriend". His bass player was just riding the C#.) I don't know why Matthew Sweet lets it go, I mean he wrote the song. He still rocked though. Awesome songwriter, singer.
Thank you!!
Nice, top tune that, added to my Watch Later list to learn. :) RIP Robert Quine btw.
Five Aces! I Love this song and I remembered it in a dream and looked it up-so you know it's from GOD! Thanks tremendously for sharing your rock masterpiece and teaching it to your fans. I also love the Anime movie you picked for the background. Especially when the Girl lead lunges and plants kisses on her guy. That's Love baby! And, she's never gonna let him free and I wish that guy was ME!
Great song. Did they film this video on a ship during a storm? Whoa.
Cool 🤙
Love the song... my college band used to cover it! Isn't it in F# Major? I = F# Maj, IV = B Maj, and V = C# Maj, right?
benjo71472 It’s in C# (that’s clearly the tonal center), even though it uses chords outside the major key. Likely C# Mixolydian or something not far off.
I need someone to show my Quine's guitar parts
So it's in C# Mixolydian (same chords as F#).
Let's just say it's in the key of ROCK!
key of F# ??
Back in the 90s I would have bet money that this song was in D but they tuned the guitars down a half step, seemed like every band was doing that at the time. Guess not!
Very”Ace Frehley”
What a great opportunity to learn this song from the artist, only to have it ruined by horrible camera work! Buy a gimble for God’s sake
I love you Matthew and I owe everything I know to you, but you're a terrible teacher, lol. But the rhythm riff is dope. You haven't lost your touch
