  • The World Beyond (1978)
Staring Granville Van Dusen & JoBeth Williams
Sportswriter Paul Taylor, after a near-death experience on the operating table, can hear the voices of the recently dead. These voices direct him to people who need help from supernatural dangers. In this story, his mission takes him to a remote Canadian island haunted by a creature made from mud and clay. The only thing which can harm this mud golem is salt.
    THIS IS THE WHOLE MOVIE.

Wow! This show has haunted me since I saw it as a kid - I was about 12 based on the date. I didn't remember it was a TV show (thought it was a movie), but man this thing scared the crap out of me. Only show/movie that scared me more was the Exorcist. The sound of the monster, the man-shaped hole in the ground, the boats tore up, the crawling hand, the creepy music... all resided in my memories. Gives me shivers to this day! Can't believe I found it after all these years lol.

Whoever did the sound for this show deserves an award. This scared the crap out of me in 78, and I just watched it a second time 45 years later- it’s still WAY scarier than a TV show has any right to be. What a shame this never became a series.

Sounds great 👍 I will try it strictly on your recommendation alone. Check out The Night Stalker from 1973-74; which was a series that influenced The X - Files by using Chris Carter on a few of their teleplays. Thankfully yours, DJP Boston, Massachusetts Amerikkka quite obvious at this point in time.❤ Cheers nonetheless!

I remember this originally aired on CBS the same time a movie about a giant turtle in the Bermuda triangle aired on ABC. Next day at school I discovered everyone saw the turtle movie (in 1978 most people I knew could get signal from 3 dodgy TV channels if they were lucky) and I was the only one who had seen this. That crawling hand freaked our whole family out, it was pretty scary for that time and for a TV movie. I couldn't remember the name of it but glad to have a chance to see it with older eyes.

I found a TV Guide from January 1978 and looked this up - it aired at 9pm Friday night at the same time as Bermuda Depths. I remember it airing in the middle of the week, but memories aren't perfect. It even had a full page ad for Bermuda Depths and a smaller ad for The World Beyond. This guide is going into my personal collection of tv and movie memorabilia.

I flipped back and forth between the two. Both movies scared the crap out of me. The turtle scared me cause I already had the ocean phobia thanks to Jaws, but the Mud Monster scared me all on its own merit. Now I can see throwbacks to even older movies- when they open the door and it’s right outside, that’s straight from The Thing. And salt water also killed The Faceless Man (another 50s movie)

Thanks so much for posting this. I hadn't seen it since it originally aired. I recorded it on an audio cassette and used to play it for my younger cousins when they visited. Only rich people had VCR in 1978. My cousins loved it and we played it several times. Of course, I would have to sit there and tell them what all was happening. That mud monster's howling was enough to make this a perfect monster movie for kids. Just having that in the background during much of the show was enough to make this creepy as f--k.
This was the second pilot for the series. There had been an earlier episode that played a few months before this one. I have no memory of what the plot was. I only remember that I saw it and it had the same beginning as this episode but featured a different ghost. If anybody out there has it, please post it!
Final note-the show's creator, Art Wallace, was a script supervisor for the original Dark Shadows.

I remembered The World of Darkness (4/17/1977) from the year before and thought a series would be produced featuring the adventures of Paul Taylor (Granville Van Dusen) as the dead lead him to fight for, and protect, the yet living from the forces of evil. Exciting to hear Chris was the mud monster! I always wondered which island the cottage scenes were filmed on. The Gan water scenes were filmed at the Bay Street docks (now the municipal marina) and the Gan Boatline's workshop building with the old Pumphouse in the background. All are on the St Lawrence River. The one gentleman giving directions was Mr. Art Pullaw. Not sure of the second gentleman sitting with him. How exciting it was to see our little town on television! The first and only other time I saw it was back in 1978 on TV in our room at the Reef Hotel in Waikiki/Hawaii during our couple days stopover on our way back to Vancouver/Canada. I was only 17 years old back then but I thought it was pretty freaky nonetheless. I'm sixty years old now and I thought it made for an interesting chill to see it again after all that time......In fact, I still recall my mother harping on about all the smears and traces of mud the monster it's leaving all over the place, the monster must be getting smaller and smaller because after a while there wouldn't be much left of him. Then my dad says "Don't know,......maybe the creature has a way of rejuvenating the lost mud.

I thought the same until I got curious that I could ever find it on google about 5 years ago and came across a blog where everyone seemed to speak the same language as me regarding this movie. Watching it feels like I am recalling a bad dream.

I remember the mud monster because not only did it scare me but when the hand crawled across the floor my Father chose that moment to grab my shoulders and shout boo right then! I will never forget that for all my days. Only other thing that petrified me more was the exorcist and aliens!

It looked like a pilot for a television series that never materialized. Scary story about people on a deserted island terrorized by a monster made of mud. I saw it in 1978 when I was fourteen. It did feel like a Dan Curtis production. Curtis always had a talent for scaring television viewers.

Wow... Thank You for Posting this! I remember this movie when I was very young and I watched it when I was at home alone. It Scared the heck out of me. I could not remember the name of this movie and for some reason the correct search term was Mud Creature! Thanks again. It is good to re-watch something from my youth that I had also thought maybe I made up since I was not able to find this for soooo long.

Although this “monster” is referenced as a “golem” in this show it is in fact a creature known as a grimp. These are very common in western ny and southern Ontario inhabiting most bodies of water if they are deep enough to not freeze completely in our cold oppressive winters. Grimps are very dangerous but rarely attack people. Most grimps are happy to just swim the other way when encountering a human. One of the best places to see a grimp in their natural habitat is the Indian river delta at rice Lake Ontario. Grimps are mostly docile and do a very good job of filtering pollutants from the water. It is believed that the more pollutants a grimp encounters the more dangerous they become. Hopefully with the renewed interest in keeping our waterways clean grimps will be less of a danger in the near future.

It's surprising how many people are unaware of the grimps. We have them on the West Coast as well. Ours are a mix of Tule and mud, often containing feathers and debris of waterfowl native to our area. Grimps are making a comeback with the restoration of wetlands. I don't know what ours are called, but they are clearly grimps... Probably the Ohlone have a word for them.

I’m glad to hear that grimps are bicoastal. Since the shutting of our border with Canada and the resulting vaccine requirement it’s been over 2.5 years since I’ve been able to observe the spring grimp nesting in southern Ontario. Maybe a trip out what west is in my future to study these fascinating creatures further.

@Spud13ify Oh, absolutely, The Night Stalker was record-breaking TV. I wasn't trying to compare the two as a whole. All I meant to convey is that I think The World Beyond quite a good pilot for the era, and the only reason I can see for the network to pass on it, is that perhaps they thought the main character wasn't strong enough to carry a series. A pity - I'd love to see more.

This seemed to leave such an indelible impression on those who watched it that one Friday night back in the 70's, and yet "The World Beyond" wasn't picked up as a series. It might've been the "X-Files" of it's day had it been given a chance. Pity.

I went to a spooky drive-in movie with a friend's parents when I was a kid. I never forgot the movie we saw. It was about a severed hand which crawled around killing people. The hand had belonged to a man on his honeymoon with his brand new wife. The couple was interrupted by a man who had decided he'd have sex with the woman first. They fought and the hand was cut off. I went home that night and couldn't sleep. Every time I caught a glimpse of my own hands in the moonlight lying on my duvet I freaked a little. I ended up keeping both hands under the covers but still couldn't sleep. Getting scared to death because of a spooky movie was wonderful. These days I still love spooky movies, but because I have a huge dog now I sleep fine.

For a little kid in the 70s, this tv movie was very frightening. It was the 2nd installment of a proposed series starring Granville Van Dusen. The first one was called, I think, the World of Darkness and it was about vampires. Beatrice Straight who played Dr. Lesh in Poltergeist was in it. Would be great to find that!
