Pretty much. If no one is generating revenue from it, bootlegs are pretty much fair game for historical/archival purposes. It is definitely a deep dive into late 1970s variety show entertainment.

Hence why he was frozen in carbonate in Empire and not wanting to come back in Return. But yeah, I wouldn’t put it past him if this was the reason why he didn’t want to do Han Solo anymore

I'm a 64 year old Star Wars fan. Having not seen it when it aired, and having successfully avoided it for decades, I just watched it here for the first time ever. It lived up to all I'd heard about it. Or down, depending on one's point of view. Bonus surprise: this was recorded off of WHIO in Dayton, OH, my hometown CBS station. The station IDs were a trip down memory lane.
I'm a 32 year old Star Wars fan and I probably laughed every 3 seconds during this entire movie. Nice to see the generations get together to watch...whatever this is. I'll probably wake up tomorrow thinking I dreamt this up while I was high.

I was in 7th grade/12 years old when Star Wars came into movie theatres...i was totally blown away; a friend's mother took us in her VW Bug to a drive in and I and her two daughters sat in the back and watched SW....forever changed me....became totally obsessed. Had to have everything SW. I remember how excited I was to watch this special on TV. Yes, I do remember being disappointed that it kinda sucked but still, it was SW and on TV, a huge thing back then when I had to sit in the movie theater again and again to watch my fave movie never dreaming that some day I'd own it on videotape and then be able to stream it. I'm 59 now and Star Wars will always have a special place in my heart. My only regret is I never had children to share my love of the movie with. The first movie will of course always be my fave. RIP Carrie Fisher and others. Thanks for making my youth such a happy experience for me. And thank you for loading this video to watch again after so many years.

I was 13 and living in a country town in NSW Australia when this aired on one of the two channels we were lucky to have. Color TV had been broadcasting for three years by then but not every family could afford the luxury. I remember a whole heap of us friends going over to another friend's place to watch this special on a Friday night during the summer Christmas school holidays on their brand new set. We all sat on the floor eyes glued to it...IN COLOR. I know this special hasn't aged well but it was magic for the time

This was pretty epic back in the day. Before we had internet, nothing was “on demand”. Most of us didn’t even have VCRs. There was a huge void of anything Star Wars in between movies. We craved anything having to do with Star Wars. Even something as corny as this was very welcome!

When I was in college, I had "The Friend That Wouldn't Leave". My roommate and I had to pull out one of our Monty Python beta (yes, I said beta), tapes, and that would do it. Worked every time. This would have done it quicker.

I miss when this was the only bad thing to come out of Star Wars, but then Disney came along
I started to skip through some scenes that were just filler, without any actual content in them
But I quickly came to the conclusion that every scene is like that

Ten minutes of wookie dialogue is hard to follow. The movies gives them a few lines, with another character around so you can follow at least half the conversation. But three wookies alone? Nah. I think the two ewok movies had the same problem, you can't handle that much "jub-jub" straight.
Same, I almost wish I didn't watch this.
I tried skipping over all of the scenes that were too bizarre and weird to watch. When I finished doing that, the movie was over!

I was there. We kids were thrilled, being that it was Star Wars. Everyone in the school was talking about it. It was during the show that our glee turned to horror.

Hayden is correct. This was heavily promoted before hand, we were all looking forward to it. Actually watching it was a huge level of "WTF?" I recall being sorely disappointed by everything except the animated feature which introduced Boba Fett.

Chopper Terrible! but At Least they could show that missed Hulk episode again as a rerun, or maybe even the the Hulk episode that was going to be in that show slot was already a rerun. This Holiday special was shown to the public on Network TV only ONCE, then never professionally shown on Broadcast TV ever again, not even as a rerun. That’s how bad it is!

Kids, before you judge those of us that lived during the time this was made and watched this you have to understand that home video options did not even exist for most people at this point. All we had was broadcast TV
Star Wars in theaters had been so amazing that the idea we could see something to do with it on television at home meant we were definitely going to tune in for this.

I saw this on TV at 8 years old. I LOVED Star Wars, and I sat about 10 inches from the screen. 😊
