I've gotten older and I 'feel' the same about movies/tv I watched in the 80's as a youngster. But I don't think it's true - we only remember the good ones - and today, personally I'm so sick of seeing bad shows, have seen so many good movies, that I'm loathe to risk wasting 2hrs on something that will likely be crap. But good grief there were some stinkers back then too. Remember "Space:1999"? It looked great, but the acting and stories are pure crap, you wouldn't even get away with that stuff today
@@xamurai00 Keeping up appearances seems to have left the room 20 odd years ago. At least that’s what I’ve experienced living here in LA. I see younger women shopping in sweats, yoga pants, thongs, pajamas, and leotards. Their hair is a mess, un brushed with multi colored dyes. And the men look like they stepped out of prison, or haven’t moved on from dressing like an adolescent. Not to mention most everyone today is thick, because no one eats at home anymore. It is what it is. Sorry for the rant
I have that same voice apparently. In my younger days I did really good as a receptionist. They used to call just to hear my voice...so they said. They were being nice. 😂 Actually my voice is like a mix of demi moore and Patricia Neal. I can easily sound like a guy on the phone if I have to. Lol
This particular episode freaked me out till near the end when we knew what was going on --- very scary --- Patricia Neal was an amazing actress with a velvet voice. GREAT EPISODE.

MICHELLE REGIS - They were all dead - in limbo, waiting to be moved onto the next stage. Her husband survived the crash - that's why he wasn't in the hotel. (The hotel made a mistake thinking he was dead - that's why they moved his suitcases out when they realised he was still alive). At the end she realised what was happening and, although she could have had him with her if she'd asked, she decided to let him live.

I just barely remember it- I think I was 7-8 when it was on. The theme stuck with me, but since I didn't get to see it a million times in reruns like 'Night Gallery' it was essentially a brand-new series for me when I rediscovered it a few years back.
Omg me too I was 7 years old in 1972. I was addicted to scary movies too. And I never heard of this movie series at all. But I remember some of the wonderful legendary actors most are gone now I miss them.
When I was about 7 years old, my mother let me spend the night with my friend who was my age. She just lived down the road about 3 houses, so I just walked there. Well my mother would not let me watch horror movies. But....her mother would let her. So that night, a TV movie aired for the very first time. It was called Legend of Hell House. We watched it on TV with her mother with us. I was so scared it was not funny. Actually, that movie is NOT for children -- even today!! Anyway, I never told my mother. LOL I had that with a couple of friends along the way. When I was a pre-teen, MTV just came out and was brand new on the scene. My mother would NEVER EVER let me watch a show like that - I knew it. But.....my best friend at that time (different friend and different city - LOL) and I would walk home from school and since her house was on the way to mine, I was allowed to stop by her house with her and have snacks and watch a little TV. Well......EVERYDAY, I could not wait to get to her house and watch MTV!! I never told my mother. A few years before that, another best friend and I went to the movies together on a Saturday. This movie her mother let her go to, but I KNEW my mother would never ever let me go to the theater to see. So I went with my friend. The movie was called Xanadu. Once again, I never told my mother. My poor mother.
I read Patricia Neal’s life story some years ago, she had a stroke when she was quite young and had to learn to speak again. You can see the effects of the stroke in her eye and the way she walks. She bravely battled back and resumed her acting career, what a woman!
I have to say, most of these Ghost Story episodes have been average and a little over-long, but this was the best episode hands down. Great writing and atmosphere, and, of course, the legendary Patricia Neal made this an especially excellent and heartbreaking episode. I loved seeing Alice Ghostley, too. Thank you so much for posting these! I look forward to watching Circle of Fear next.
This episode creeped me out even when I was a child when it first aired. I have watched it several times since the DVD release and it gives me such an uneasy feeling. Effectively written, acted, and directed.
She was in a episode of little house on the prairie where she was dying and trying to find a home for her children was very inspiring to me. I started smiling more and changed my tune to the people I love.

See, in real life, we do not get a flashlight (or a lit candle!) and go outside in the dead of night to see what the sound was. Only in the movies and on TV.
Best episode so far. How fantastic programmes used to look, beautifully shot on 35mm film, which was the norm in those days, then digital came along - and all that seemed to matter was quantity not quality. The best years of tv are gone forever.

I watched this movie first time winter 1973 ( during the oil crisis in DK, so give or take a year ) I simply love (most) of the stories, Time of terror being my favourite, BUT Mr Winston Essex's presentations remain an absolute thrill to me....to this day

I can't recall a mainstream adult horror anthology since Masters of Horror over ten years ago. Maybe it's more a British POV we're just more cynical.

I was twelve in 1972 and I loved growing up during these years. The seventies especially is my go-to comfort decade for movies, TV and music. I feel for people who think our culture was always this sad, morally bankrupt, and shot.
Well, let's not forget Hud, The Subject was Roses, A Face in the Crowd, Fountainhead, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Her affectionate performance in The Walton's: Homecoming, the pilot episode of the Walton's series. She was always a class act.

I remember watching this one as a kid. It was very scary for a 13-year old in the early 1970s. Not sure it still holds up today, but I still wonder if it was perhaps a subconscious influence on the Eagles' "Hotel California" five years later. I have no proof that any of the band members ever saw the episode, and they've certainly never mentioned it in interviews about the song, but there are similarities that always made me think they were more than coincidental. I've seen a lot of appreciation expressed on this page for Patricia Neal, both as an actress and as a survivor of some horrific bad luck in the prime of her life. If you want to see her at her peak, check out her Academy Award-winning performance in "Hud". Terrific film with awesome performances all around.
I, too, watched all these as a kid, and this one hasn't quite held up as some of the others (no reflection on the great Patricia Neal, btw). The story is a bit too obvious, and the denouement can be guessed pretty early on. This was almost like one of those Season 4 "Twilight Zone" episodes where they had to "expand" a half-hour storyline and pad it out to fit an hour slot. Gets a bit tedious three-quarters of the way through.
Hotel California was written about the experience of moving to California and the changes living here created for them, and those changes are permanent. A culture clash kind of song.
We used to watch the old black and white scary moves on television when we were kids. Saturday and Sunday afternoons were fun fests of old movie that I loved during the cold winter months. When I had kids they did not understand why I liked the old black and white movies so much. Even with simplistic storylines the writers and directors of the past made them interesting. The 70s stuff leaves a lot to be desired but still more interesting than the movie makers today that believe that they have to spell everything out for you.
Too cool to get to watch this great series that aired before I was born (not much before, but still...) there's no quality in story or production today like the old stuff has!
Patricia Neal played Olivia in The Homecoming, the TV movie that was later used as the basis of The Waltons, in which Neal's part was taken by Michael Learned.
Maybe, these serial episodes are from a time when writers did not want to indoctrinate and convince the viewers that fantasy is reality and reality is fantasy?
Incredible that this was just seven years after the massive stroke that nearly claimed Patricia Neal's life. Beautiful woman - the grandmother of Sophie Dahl.
I think this is my 3rd time seeing this. The first time, I must have zoned out, so I didn't get the ending. Now, I'm watching for the vintage fun of it.
This was amazing! Fascinating, intriguing and genuinely scary and disturbing! Patricia Neal was such a fine actress. The so-called "acting talent" of today can't hold a candle to her. And likewise, the horror films of today are pathetic by comparison.
That was great! You can figure it out early on, but the story is acted out so well you can't help to watch until the end. I question her husbands grief though. Maybe he'd want to be with her, rather than alive without her?.. Oh well, that's what makes it a classic!
Grecian. My mother had one like that, the only one of her famous pretty nightgowns gifted from my daddy that I begged her to let me wear. No dice. I woulda looked silly anyway, at five-foot-six. She was over five-foot-ten.
I think this is one of the best story/morals that I've seen, What does love mean? Does she keep him for herself or does she let him have another chance at life. I have experienced this, I did not want to live without my wife, (she had bone cancer) but my little 10 mo. old daughter needed me more. ( and God knew it.)
No digital special fx, no bodybuilt men, no siliconed girls...just a story. Awesome !

I remember watching this one as a kid. It was very scary for a 13-year old in the early 1970s. Not sure it still holds up today, but I still wonder if it was perhaps a subconscious influence on the Eagles' "Hotel California" five years later. I have no proof that any of the band members ever saw the episode, and they've certainly never mentioned it in interviews about the song, but there are similarities that always made me think they were more than coincidental.
I've seen a lot of appreciation expressed on this page for Patricia Neal, both as an actress and as a survivor of some horrific bad luck in the prime of her life. If you want to see her at her peak, check out her Academy Award-winning performance in "Hud". Terrific film with awesome performances all around.
I, too, watched all these as a kid, and this one hasn't quite held up as some of the others (no reflection on the great Patricia Neal, btw). The story is a bit too obvious, and the denouement can be guessed pretty early on. This was almost like one of those Season 4 "Twilight Zone" episodes where they had to "expand" a half-hour storyline and pad it out to fit an hour slot. Gets a bit tedious three-quarters of the way through.

I love the possible connection between this show and Hotel California.
Hotel California was written about the experience of moving to California and the changes living here created for them, and those changes are permanent. A culture clash kind of song.
Patricia ONeal was one of the best actresses of her time. She could make you believe she was that person in the part she played, enjoyed her acting.

We used to watch the old black and white scary moves on television when we were kids. Saturday and Sunday afternoons were fun fests of old movie that I loved during the cold winter months. When I had kids they did not understand why I liked the old black and white movies so much. Even with simplistic storylines the writers and directors of the past made them interesting. The 70s stuff leaves a lot to be desired but still more interesting than the movie makers today that believe that they have to spell everything out for you.
Too cool to get to watch this great series that aired before I was born (not much before, but still...) there's no quality in story or production today like the old stuff has!
Patricia Neal played Olivia in The Homecoming, the TV movie that was later used as the basis of The Waltons, in which Neal's part was taken by Michael Learned.
She wanted the part but she was too sick.

This was amazing! Fascinating, intriguing and genuinely scary and disturbing! Patricia Neal was such a fine actress. The so-called "acting talent" of today can't hold a candle to her. And likewise, the horror films of today are pathetic by comparison.

WOW! Now I realize that the movie Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis was based on this story. Fantastic!
That was great! You can figure it out early on, but the story is acted out so well you can't help to watch until the end. I question her husbands grief though. Maybe he'd want to be with her, rather than alive without her?.. Oh well, that's what makes it a classic!

Grecian. My mother had one like that, the only one of her famous pretty nightgowns gifted from my daddy that I begged her to let me wear. No dice. I woulda looked silly anyway, at five-foot-six. She was over five-foot-ten.
Even the nightgowns were pretty and romantic back then.

What a story, so eerie. I love Patricia O'Neal she was an amazing actress.
I think this is one of the best story/morals that I've seen, What does love mean? Does she keep him for herself or does she let him have another chance at life. I have experienced this, I did not want to live without my wife, (she had bone cancer) but my little 10 mo. old daughter needed me more. ( and God knew it.)
I was expecting to see Detective Columbo. The intro scene had that kind of look about it.
