I've been a mechanic for over 26 years and I'm really scared to rebuild automatic transmission and I've never done it before. I've been watching you and I have learned a lot of things and I rebuilt 4L60E completely rebuilt and i watched your videos and I feel very nervous. After i rebuilt everything and test drives, it worked perfectly. I'm so happy and thank you very much. You're the best teacher I ever had. Thank you, and have a good day.

I just rebuilt my 2007 Chevrolet 4L60E following Jimmy's tutorials and it works again! Fantastic video series and presentation. Never thought I'd attempt this procedure but he made it easy as well as ordering the parts I needed. Highly recommended, thanks Jimmy!

VIDEOS ARE EXTREMELY EDUCATING. I am a college student rebuilding two 4L60E's, one at school and one at home. Thumbs up and 5 stars. I like that these videos teach you step by step how to properly and safely take this transmission apart. Not only that, but he also shows you how to neatly organize your parts and tools. Thank you for the videos and please keep these online for many years!

I am going to school to be a mechanic and have been in a automatics class for a week now. My teacher is terrible and I have no idea what anything I was removing was or how it ran the transmission. After watching the 7 videos I know more than the teacher was supposed to teach us. Thank you.

If you have the cheap ebay or Amazon spring compressor tool. It will not work for this even tho it says it does. You have to modify it. This is what I did.
I removed the 3in U shape piece from the rod. Then take the longer metal piece (5in) and put $4 in quarters. $2 on each side and tape it to the (5in piece) so that it's the width of the spring cage. Then insert the T-handle side from the bottom of trans case and the longer part(5in w/coins taped.) And start compressing it. (Turning the 5in piece.)
I would recommend putting tape on the T-handle to keep from scratching the bottom of case.
I just did this and it worked.

9:05 - 9:13, removing the Low Reverse Piston Return Spring snap ring... I am finding my snap ring pliers are slightly too wide to fit into the space to fit the pliers tips to snag the snap ring pointed ends. I desire to not grind on these pliers tips, as to do so will likely weaken them.
What brand/model of snap ring pliers are you using at this particular remove (and later, install) operation?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jimmy,
I need your advise, or if anyone has any advise I would like to hear it.
I just took apart my 4L60E. I have 1999 Suburban 4x4, I used your great videos of course, but now I can't decide if I should rebuild it or not. there were broken pieces of metal everywhere. The Outer Ring gear cracked, a big piece of the rear planetary gear set broke off. The broken pieces even got between the low reverse piston and the case and caused deep scratches on both of them. the big question is should I rebuild this Transmission or just get a used one and rebuild that one? I would appreciate any feedback, I don’t want to waste all my work and order a master kit, plus parts for a case that might be a total loss.
    Thank you.

These videos are EXCELLENT, STEP BY STEP, don't seem so bad now, I cant wait to try it.
The only thing that freaks me out is putting so many parts in the same box, how to remember what went where? I can do it for engine ect, because I have seen them so may times but not trans yet. I would have to separate parts by sections at the start. Do you do older trans like thm350, 400 and powerglide?

I have followed these lessons in dis assembling my 1999 4l60e and everything has went smoothly until I got to trying to remove the Output Shaft snap ring. The snap ring in my transmission does not appear to look like the snap ring Mr Williams removed in the Part one Lesson 7. Mine looks to be a small yellow colored snap ring with no eye holes to receive prongs of snap ring pliers. Can you help me??

vernon anderson I just pulled my own 2008 4l60e down and was to same as yours. No holes for ring pliers. Tough to get out but possible. I wound up modifying a pair of hemostats to do it with. Don’t laugh it worked. Lol

    • @zx14rpilot

a standard pair for use in the hole type rings that has a 45deg or 90deg tip, i used a set with the 45 tip and worked well, just required a steady hand to remove once spread the 90deg tip would work better if tips are short. did not wish to grind my flat tip set either but will pick up a cheap set in the future with the narrow flat tip, since your post was 4yrs ago, I understand this is no help to you now but hopefully this reply may help others

The last snap ring is hard to see as its in a groove cut in the splines. Hard to get to also. You will need some longer snap ring pliers. I’ve just pulled my first one apart. Not too hard just nervous. Lol
