Thanks for this video, guys. Got an '01 Chevy Suburban 1500 5.3L that lost reverse and shifts hard from 2-3 and 3-4. Will definitely check these things out to see what we can do here in Virginia. Have a great day.
Well all these videos I’ve been watching are very spot on but now I’m hoping that I won’t have to go through all that with my P1810 code. I’ve dropped my pan waiting on the valve to come in. All the seals were broken and three of the five pressure plates don’t click. The name of the part is probably wrong so I mentioned the code. I have purchased a transfer case from Monster and it’s going great. The motor is a 5.3 in this 2003 Silverado
If you look at that input drum that holds all the clutch packs. The input drum has the long input shaft coming out of the front of it. This input shaft is pressed Into that drum. However: where it is pressed in, can leak and cause a loss of pressure to the 3-4 clutch pack. Sonnax sells a kit to reinforce the drum and input shaft to hold it in there better. The part of the sonnax kit that makes it not leak is the fact that green loctite is used when the input shaft is pressed Into the drum. The green loctite is what seals it back up and many of these leak. Yours is probably leaking....there is more info on this so look it up. Bottom line. If you are rebuilding this or fixing your 3-4 clutch pack problem. Take the input shaft out of the 3-4 drum and loctite it back in there. Should take care of that problem. Changing the trans fluid every 60k will help increase the life of the transmission. Get a updated pan for cheap with a Drain plug to help with this. Makes life easier. Next.......for $20 you can add so much life to this trans. He talked about the 3-4 apply seal hardening. This is caused by heat. Your trans run through the factory trans cooler at the radiator and sometimes has a factory external trans cooler in the heavier trucks, but it usually does not have an Xtra trans cooler. You want an aftermarket trans cooler in there........AFTER the radiator trans cooler. Why after? Because the transmission will be at whatever the thermostat is on the radiator. If you’re engine thermostat is 190° or higher. Your trans will be 190° or higher. We don’t want that. We want 170° So.....you still keep your original trans cooler at the radiator. You keep that and run both the original and the aftermarket after it This will make the trans run cooler and cool it back down to below what the engine thermostat is. It’s needs to be run after the radiator cooler on the fluid return back to the transmission. Any cooler will help. Sonnax makes the best sun shell replacement and has a long list of other parts to keep this transmission alive. If you have a 700r4 or a 4l60e or any other transmission for that matter. Sonnax usually has upgrade parts to make it last longer. With the 4l60e.......sonnax has ......a lot of upgrade parts. By the time your done. 1/4 of the parts would be sonnax parts. Either way.......run a better cooler

I have 323k on mine and I am babying it. About to change fluid and filter with some Lucas but scared to flush it because of all the "do not flush" videos online.
Unfortunately, Dexron VI won’t keep the sunshell from failing. When you switched from III to VI, did you notice that you could smell the new fluid after parking your car? I noticed a definite transmission oil smell like it was coming out of the vent maybe. No leaks.
TrakSpock1 had a Zr2 with 252,000 miles, off road all of the time, occasionally towed heavy thing's, kept the fluid and filter changed never had a transmission issue.
Very good. Spoiler alert. So, the sun shell is upgradeable to a stronger design and the pressure spring and ball leaks need to be solved to prevent lack of pump pressure.
My brother bought his '95 K1500 in '03. We bought it from him for my son last year. He had never changed the fluid. Of course, shortly after I change all the fluids, I lose 3 - 4, go figure. Plan in doing a full heavy duty rebuild on it soon.
Nice! If you give us a call we can get you a quote for a transmission. We also offer some of the most complete rebuild kits on the market if you want to do the build yourself.
Looks like you've done this a few times. Great video. Very informative and I learned a lot. Just bought my first truck, an '01 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3.
Mine blew other night. Havnt lift the truck yet to inspect it. Hoping it’s just my rear differential, but could be wrong. If it’s the whole trans ima need that sunshell in replacement. Good info
I've watched a few of these vids from Monster Transmission and I really like the no frills, get the info out format. Have a feeling I may be calling them soon, as my '02 Blazer is experiencing some transmission issues. Ah, the life of a car owner.
Wow. Thanks for making such an AWSOME video. I just today took my 92 Chevy Silverado in for the transmission to be rebuilt. I now have some more questions for them.
after the transmission (4L60E) fluid leaked out from one of the rusted cooler lines I'm pretty sure this burnt the clutch pack and main seal. the symptom is delayed engagement. car had only 140k on it when it happened. when going from 3rd to 4th gear the car hesitates and have to apply more gas. also from 2-3 there is delayed engagement with a jolt (and click sound), kind of annoying especially in traffic. other than that the car has been running fine car now has 180k on it. I may eventually do the job myself. I think the transmission is a good design but cooler lines are a lousy design and are unfit for places where salt is used on the roads. rust is a killer of cars and any metal fluid transfer lines should be the top priority of maintenance. I always spray grease/oil film on the lines - it doesn't look good but it's better than having a mechanical problem down the line. also, just because you don't see rust doesn't mean there isn't a rust problem. one little spot (as in my case) is all it takes.
Damn, this guy has fixed a few transmissions... great info! Would be nice to have a how-to rebuild video. Slower showing more details on techniques used for snap rings etc. Thanks!
I have a 94 GMC Sierra SLE with the 4L60E... Long story short, I would like to actually have the original IMO transmission built from empty case to be installed and working just fine... How much is fair price ?
Good video and good info. I have a 1994 Chevy Caprice 9C1. Have problems with the transmission shifting from 3rd gear to overdrive on the highway. This happens all the time. A lot of times I feather the pedal to keep her in 3rd gear at 45mph to 60mph.
I have a shift kit already in the transmission, would that hurt the 4L60E ? I would like a good shift kit in her, have stock 350hp 350 LT1. I only added headers to her.
If it is going in and out of 4th gear it could be low on fluid and or there could be a stuck valve in valve body. The 4th gear servo Teflon ring could be worn out or damaged. If its the servo it could also have a worn out band. The first thing to check would be the band clearance see if its too loose.
Ever think of draining the transmission before it gets the tear down? That's a big mess. Even if you put it tailshaft down in a 5 gallon pail it would be a lot less mess to fiddle through. Good tips though.
Good hard working man. Has interest and pride in his work. When men like these are gone we are in trouble. The people Today will have to start by pulling their pants up. Maybe take an interest in work.
I have an 02’ Chevy Blazer ZR2 4x4 & I was coming to a stop when my light turned green. I pressed the gas peddle & I guess the tranny was downshifting from 2nd to 1st at that exact moment because I heard a pop then a whiny noise underneath. I lost reverse but I have 1st & 3rd gear. (I believe) it will go from 1st to another gear but only after hitting 3000rpm. My local Transmission Repair Shop said it’s most likely the Sunshade Gear had sheared off. Gonna cost me between $700-$850 If it doesn’t need a Rebuild. Which cost $2k. Either way, I’m dropping her off tomorrow for the tear down. She’s in damn great shape besides that tranny issue. You think it’s just that gear on shade that stripped? It’s always shifted fine, no slipping, no burning smells, etc. less than 100k miles on her. Also, they would be installing a heavy duty sunshade, $850 & 3 days to repair & fair price? Even $2k for a possible rebuild a good price? Thanks & great vid. Note- No Engine Codes
Thank you for your inquiry Mike. It sounds to me, it could be a failed servo. Or possibly a broken sunshell, considering it's very common. It is hard for me to comment on the pricing in your area, but we could sell you a complete remanufactured transmission for less than $2000, with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty. If it is a failed servo, $750 is a bit steep for a repair cost. Please call us at 800-708-0087.
thank you for making this great video. now i know exactly the problem and fix for my 93 silverado 2500 that whips my head back every time it shifts into 2nd gear.
Good stuff. I’m about to rebuild a 4L60 for my C5 Corvette and need to beef it up to handle a nitrous hit. Just added a few new parts to the list thanks to this video. 👍🏻
Just this morning I lost 3 and 4 while getting on a highway. Drove to the next exit and drove back home on back roads and it even slipped going into second. Revved the motor and then backed off to get it to change gears. At the transmission shop right now. Waiting to hear but I'm not optimistic.
I have a 2001 Tahoe. I have to let go the gas pedal after start driving forward for the transmission can keep moving forward. Like every 5 miles por hour, I have to let go the gas pedal and hit it slowly for the car keep driving. I change the transmission oil filter and the 2 solenoids it ran good for a few minutes after replace. And there again keep doing the samething.
The forward clutch pack could be slipping if it is not doing it in reverse. If it's not doing it in reverse, check line pressure. If the line pressure is good then it may have a bad torque converter.
Great info sir!! Sir I recently bought my son a 2002 Chevy S 10 V6 and driving the truck around in the neighborhood the trans seems to shift fine but when you get out on the main road to where you have to pick up some speed first and second shifts but third you have to let off the gas in order for it to shift and also fourth you have to let off the gas in order for it to shift is there any recommendations you could recommend for me to check? Thank you!!👍🦨
Sounds like third and fourth are starting to wear out or have weak pump pressure. It'd probably be a good idea to take it from a diagnostic at an ATRA shop. Hope that helps!
Me: I just watched this detailed video on how I can fix the transmission on your Tahoe. I’m gonna put these hands to work. Wife: I wouldn’t let you change my air freshener. You better stay away from my vehicle!
Thanks very informative. Been looking for this type of info for days. Would rather do work myself than take it to a shop. Transmissions aren't as scary as they look
Hello from Germany! Thanks for the interesting videos! I have a question regarding the oil in the 4L60E. I read contradictory tips regarding Dexron 3 and switching to Dexron 6. My car is from 1995 (Chevy Caprice Station LT1), has 125000 miles. The transmission is still original. So far, no problems. Now the question: Should I take the oil change Dexron 6 or rather the old Dexron 3? Many Thanks! Dirk
Hi, thanks for the video and great information. I have a question hopefully you or someone else can answer for me. I've got a 2000 Sierra 1500 with a 4L60E. I lost 3rd and 4th gear, and replaced with a rebuilt unit. Filled up with fluid, and it will never "drop into gear". So question is, what should I suspect? The only part I reused was the torque converter. How prone are these to failure? I'm suspecting that the converter was going bad and caused the damage to the 3/4 clutch pack.? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Truck has 130k on it, but was used for towing/ farm use.
First thing you should check is your line pressure. If you have no line pressure then it could be a pump issue, but if you do have line pressure then it could be a torque converter issue.
If the torque converter was not fully engaged in the pump during installation that will cause your problem. It causes the pump rotor to break when the tranny is tightened up.
There's no way I could do this myself my 97 gmc doesn't have the 3/4 gears and need a rebuild but after this video I think a different Transmission is needed .any help would be appreciated
I bought 94 silverado, The car has been lying dormant for eight years , when I started to test drive, It shifts gears 1 and 2 very smoothly, but for gears 3 and 4, I have to press the gas pedal several times to change gears, When I looked at the transmission fluid it is full of bubbles, I will change the fluid tomorrow, Do you think the problem is with the transmission or other parts?
I had an issue with very hard shifting from 1-2. I replaced the valve body entirely. That fixed that issue, however the 3-4 began slipping after that. For instance, if driving on a level road above 55mph or so it will slip from 4-3 raising the RPM. Under load it will remain in the proper gear. Is this video describing the fix i need to do?
I have a restored 1999 S10 with a 4L60 that sometime slips between 2 and 3rd. It's a rebuilt trans about 10 years old, and the fluid looks good. What could be causing this?
We have this video here that explains temperature ranges: ua-cam.com/video/F7xhT_b6l7k/v-deo.html . And a cooler is always suggested. But if you are in hot environments, towing a trailer, or have high horse power you should definitely look into getting one.
We have a 2016 Silverado 2500 HD we learned the transmission was shot and had to be completely replaced. On here trying to figure out why. We tow a 30ft keystone cougar travel trailer full time. Could this be the cause? If so, any recommendations when driving either normal roads, uphill, downhill, etc to help us keep our new transmission in top shape? Thanks!
Great video! Ok so my wife shell is broken on her truck. I'm going to have them put the Beast Shell in like I have in my Sierra. The regular sun shell.is trash. I had 2 break on previous rebuilds.
Thanks for the channel, makes me wish I was a transmission tech. I have a 2009 f150 with a 5.4. sometimes it feels like the trans is slipping but there aren't any codes.
No problem! We have enough transmissions techs here we could try to figure that our for you. What are your shift points and are you hearing any noises?
Have a 1995 Z28 that the dealer rebuilt my transmission at 33,000 miles. (Under warranty ) Worked great until I blew a head gasket at 77,000 miles, and the car sat for 5 years. So in 2007-2008 I put the car back together with all new fluid in the trans. Drove it for another 10 years trouble free and only put another 33,000 miles. The car has 100,000 miles today. Last summer when I drove it, the trans. seemed to have a little slip from 1st -2nd gear. Once warmed up it seemed a little better. Would a 100% fluid change help or am I looking at another possible rebuild.😡
My 2015 Silverado is downshifting a little hard from 2-1. Any idea what's the issue? Should I be concerned? Bought the truck with 150k miles a week ago.
Im ready to do this , but very afraid of the check balls flying out when I disassemble the valve body, you go over this info every quickly. Please lay out some steps i can take to avoid a situation where I don't know where those balls go. thanks for the video!
The shift reprogramming kit will include instructions on where the balls go for your valve body. Besides that just be careful removing the valve body and taking a picture will help too.
Getting ready to do a filter change on my Silverado. I got the truck with a little over 86k miles and it has just about 140k now. In the time I’ve had it I have never touched the transmission. It has always had a 1-2 hard shift and the fluid is a little brown but not burned. Hopefully this doesn’t mess anything up
Yeah sometimes if you go a very long time without any upkeep, and then add new fluid, it can cause a problem. But sounds like it's time for a refresh if the fluid is brown. We do have a pretty complete service kit if you're interested here: www.monstertransmission.com/Monster-Transmission-Complete-Service-Kit-1-ATF-Kooler-Kleen-Conditioner-Filter-Pan-Gasket-Oil-Drain-Pan_p_18507.html#.XH1AJYhKiUk
Hello, I myself have a question. I tried to rebuild my transmission and now its really sluggish taking off. Any throttle under 50% it will take off normally. But under WOT, it will not move, it will not rev up so I know its not slipping either. Solenoid A&B have both been replaced. Voltage to transmission has also been checked. Any clue what it could be?
Hey Mark, if it's throwing a solenoid code error I would recommend finding out which one it is and replacing it on the 4l60E series. They are very easy to replace but if you don't have any experience then its recommended to take to a transmission shop for a diagnosis.
I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer was driving and stopped at a lite now it won't go in drive. I'm unable to locate dip stick to check and see if it needs fluid
The guy breaks down the transmission to the freakin T and nares the issue down ... 367 haters? Welcome to 2021 where nobody can be happy and thankful. This guy could probably lay in bed sick and have your transmission back together within a few hours TOPS.
Great video! I got 335000km on my 02 Sierra 1500 5.3 4x4 & still going strong....fingers crossed! Going in for the filter & fluid change this week. I replace it every 40000 or 2 years. Had the truck since new. Any recommendations on ATF Brand?

I always spray grease/oil film on the lines - it doesn't look good but it's better than having a mechanical problem down the line.
also, just because you don't see rust doesn't mean there isn't a rust problem. one little spot (as in my case) is all it takes.
Best class I've had in a while ,super video.
Thanks, we try 😏
Damn, this guy has fixed a few transmissions... great info! Would be nice to have a how-to rebuild video. Slower showing more details on techniques used for snap rings etc.
Thanks!
I know this is edited but dame he's fast.
I bought the SS kit for the 4L60E kit. Its good for 650 hp and 600Ft/lbs of torque. 427 SBC in front of it in a S10!
I have a 94 GMC Sierra SLE with the 4L60E... Long story short, I would like to actually have the original IMO transmission built from empty case to be installed and working just fine... How much is fair price ?
Thank you. Good video. Mine was the sun shell that broke off
This video motivates me to take it easy on my 4l65e in my awd denali.
Same transmission but my 2 gear slips and I’m not getting any codes. Do you have an idea what it can be.
2-4 Band is worn out or 1-2 Shift Accum piston cracked.
Very informative video! But before I put money back in a 4 l 60 e... I would just get a 4 l 80 and be done with it... or even simpler a th400
Thank u sincerely ,my s10 is 1870 w/ o 3+4th i think you just gave me the confidence to fix the p.o.s.thanks brother
Ever think of draining the transmission before it gets the tear down? That's a big mess. Even if you put it tailshaft down in a 5 gallon pail it would be a lot less mess to fiddle through.
Good tips though.
Wow I love it when people know their stuff.
I'm about to take off and rebuilt for fun . First time trying. See how it goes
My rebuild for 1400.00 kevlar 3_4 friction plates.150000 miles on junk yard trans motor has 210000 miles she's a runner.s 10 4.3 1997
thank you for making this great video. now i know exactly the problem and fix for my 93 silverado 2500 that whips my head back every time it shifts into 2nd gear.
No problem, glad we could help!
These are great transmissions if you service them my 1998 s10 has almost 200k and still shifts like a dream every 40k it gets new fluid and filter
Yes exactly, we're always trying to remind people these transmissions will take care of you if you take care of it.
We offer a service kit on our site also.

Dude s10s are my favorites first truck was a 1997 S10 5 speed then got an automatic 2000 . Best trucks seriously it's like a Honda
Nice job. Simple, to the point.
Good stuff. I’m about to rebuild a 4L60 for my C5 Corvette and need to beef it up to handle a nitrous hit. Just added a few new parts to the list thanks to this video. 👍🏻
Glad we could help!
348k on my 93 4L60e and still going strong. I run Chevron dexron 3 and change it once a year. Shift into drive when towing.
WHAT AWESOME BENCH CART IS THAT??!!
Wow!! this video was very educational and entertaining to see the inner workings of these common transmission. well done sir..
Lots of great info quickly. Excellent video !!!
👍 curt nice guy. Takes his time to answer questions. Keep up the good work mate!!! Thanks
Just this morning I lost 3 and 4 while getting on a highway. Drove to the next exit and drove back home on back roads and it even slipped going into second. Revved the motor and then backed off to get it to change gears. At the transmission shop right now. Waiting to hear but I'm not optimistic.
Thank you. Replaced and modified the valve body. Great vidoe. 🎉
Great video!! Have had many high mileage 4l60s. I have never experienced those problems, but I have maintained them. I have heard of this before tho.
Exactly, you can avoid most issues by taking care of your transmission.
Monster Transmission you got it. That has been my experience.
Me: I just watched this detailed video on how I can fix the transmission on your Tahoe. I’m gonna put these hands to work.
Wife: I wouldn’t let you change my air freshener. You better stay away from my vehicle!
Wow! Outstanding and now I know I won't be doing anything that involved. lol you guys are amazing.
Dirk
Dexron 6 is an updated version of Dexron 3. So you can use Dexron 6 for Dexron 3, but can not use Dex 3 for Dex 6.
Thank you for answer :)
Very good video and well spoken. Are the new front shell and piston stronger than the old oem?
Great video! Have to ask though, how do you know if you should use the full reaming kit, or just the spring to clear up the P1870?
Michael Jones hopefully someone can answer that. 🤔
I just had to replace mine with a new one. Next time I’ll buy one from here because I’m actually really hard on transmissions.
There's no way I could do this myself my 97 gmc doesn't have the 3/4 gears and need a rebuild but after this video I think a different Transmission is needed .any help would be appreciated
I have got to build a new teardown bench. That one is very nice
Was thinking the same thing
Dizamm, he is a boss, because I look at this with a whole lot of hell nah...
monster good job love all your videos learn a lot and fast you all get to the point fast thanks
Thanks for watching! Let us know if there are any specific topics you need covered
You would think GM would upgrade to these better parts .
That's one reason you see so many Fords ! Built Ford Tough !
I'm glad there was no quiz after the vid. He made it look like you could do it in your driveway at lunch hour and be back at work by 1pm. LOL
Curt probably could do that and still have time to make a sandwich!
3-4 clutches are most likely burnt/warped, would need to rebuild.
I have a restored 1999 S10 with a 4L60 that sometime slips between 2 and 3rd.
It's a rebuilt trans about 10 years old, and the fluid looks good.
What could be causing this?
Straight up expert. thanks for the knowledge!
Yes, Curt knows his stuff 👌. Thanks for the feedback!
Could you do a video on acceptable transmission temp ranges and when a cooler my be needed?
Thanks!
If you have a god unit, converter, cooler, and fluid it should have no issues.
Great video! Ok so my wife shell is broken on her truck. I'm going to have them put the Beast Shell in like I have in my Sierra. The regular sun shell.is trash. I had 2 break on previous rebuilds.
Have the 1870 code. Did the valve upgrade. Cleared the codes and the 1870 came back again
Thank you for this clear explanation!
It could be that the clutches are starting to wear out or a check ball getting stuck on the plate.
We do have a pretty complete service kit if you're interested here:

Hello, I myself have a question. I tried to rebuild my transmission and now its really sluggish taking off. Any throttle under 50% it will take off normally. But under WOT, it will not move, it will not rev up so I know its not slipping either. Solenoid A&B have both been replaced. Voltage to transmission has also been checked. Any clue what it could be?
Sounds like a cross leak when the line pressure rises. Make sure the shift plate gaskets are not torn or mix-matched. Hope this helps!
just tank you for this video these help me too much
Greetings curt I have a 1998 Chevy silverado 1500, check engine light code shift solenoid. What should I do? The truck has failed emissions twice.
Hey Mark, if it's throwing a solenoid code error I would recommend finding out which one it is and replacing it on the 4l60E series. They are very easy to replace but if you don't have any experience then its recommended to take to a transmission shop for a diagnosis.
Good video, lots to learn!!
I have a 2002 mercury mountaineer was driving and stopped at a lite now it won't go in drive. I'm unable to locate dip stick to check and see if it needs fluid
That vehicle requires a special fill tool. You would fill it through the drain plug.
Always, always, always put in a Transgo shift kit in these when going through them. You're welcome.

Agreed that's a big affirmative. He's a mechanical champion, it's just facts.💪😎💪👍😁👌
you're the man Curt !
Yes he is! Thanks for watching 🙂
Okey Dokey! I got it, simple, easy...
cough cough
Great video. Reminds me of why I just bring the Tahoe in and come back in a few days when you guys do your job.
