Mini Phones Are Officially Dead | Sony Xperia 5 V Micro & Nothing Phone 2a Micro

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- The Sony Xperia 5 V Micro and Nothing Phone 2a Micro are two 'upcoming' compact phones that are actually just April Fools 2024 jokes. But I really wish these mini smartphones actually existed, as small mobiles are now all but dead. We're still waiting for an Asus Zenfone 11 rather than a massive Ultra, while the best/only compact phone of 2024 is Samsung's Galaxy S24. And even then it's over six inches, which frankly most of us chaps would class as giant.
So, the Sony Xperia 5 V Micro isn't real. Sony's last mini smartphone was the XZ2 Compact, back in 2018, so don't expect another small blower from them any time soon. And the Nothing Phone 2a Micro would be the cutest wee mini mobile in 2024, if it also existed. What do you think, are you also upset that this dinky duo is pure fiction, designed to raise a chortle? Or should compact phones stay dead, in a world ruled by 6.8-inch behemoths?
Let us know below!

Got a Samsung galaxy S7 from a clearance sale as a new old stock last summer, never looked back at another phone since. Perfect fit in the hand, easy to put in bags, pockets, purses etc, awesome design. Since I use it mainly as just a phone (a galaxy tab S6 serves my streaming, browsing and gaming needs) it's a match made in heaven.
I loved my S7 and S8, pretty much downhill after that. Shame really
Nothing 2a micro would've been too small to operate well. But a Nothing 2a compact would most definitely get me excited. A compact stock Android phone? Sign me up!
Totally, so tired of bricks in the pocket. And btw, smartphone makers. Stop punching a hole in the display!
@@user-mind-body what would you prefer for front camera then?
@@BozQsony
i think, they shoul remove front camera for smaller phone, because in my opinion, people that buy a small phone dont use front camera that much, like tehy dont use small phone for making tiktok vid
... I mean, I used a Jelly for months, so I'm not too sure about this actually being an issue.
The back of the nothing phone looks like a digestive tract now.
so many tech reviewers claim to hold a flame for compact/smaller smartphones, but I've never seen anyone do a video about how they use a zenfone or similar on a daily basis
Because zenfone and similar are not compact phones.
Spot on! These hideous big *ss phones that we have as an only option these dystopian days, should be the real April Fools joke.
Maybe in alternate universe 2010
I literally switched back to my pixel 4a and sold my Xperia 1V. I just couldn't deal with the bigger size anymore.
Google got us this year though. Pixel 9 seems extremely promising.
The 4a is the perfect size and weight. I still use mine
My little brother o my stopped using his last year
Get well chris. you sound exhausted haha. 😊
please never stop speaking about compact smartphones, idk wtf is wrong with all this companies making freaking giant smartphones that cannot even fit in your pocket
Because most people outside of enthusiasts dont buy em. Sales numbers dont lie. Small phones sell like shit.
Mine does, 6.9"
Exactly 😢
I don't know what their R n D divisions are doing...
Because not everyone wants a small phone? I for one love my 6.7/6.8 sized phones and wouldn't go back to a smaller one.
Almost all small phone only have low specs. Need small phone with midrange - high end specs
I also spotted the Nothing Phone post on Instagram and was saddened because I long for a smaller phone. I am used to big phones but it is still nice to have a small phone so companies should get back to making them.
Hi Chris, I'm now onto using a Black shark 4 pro gaming phone after trying out loads of other blower's and it's great, ps random question but what's your favourite brand and flavour of crisps?t
I got big hands, and got 2 lines, a 7incher and a mini are the perfect combo for me
In my hunt for a small smartphone i saw some keyring sized ones that id love to see you review - just watching you try and use the thing i think will be entertaining 😄 I've ended up with a Pixel 8 as its only marginally bigger than my s22 but really wanted the zenfone 10!
Techspurt always makes my day with its shenanigans! 😂
Not again with the small phones that many claim that they would prefer to buy, but when it's time to put their money where their mouth is, the sales are just minuscule compared to the big devices.
because the "small" phones bein released the past couple years are not actually small
@@Randomness662 iphone 13 mini was really small but still sold horribly
@@rdmz135 it was also an iPhone. I was referring to small Android phones which is what Uncle Spurt was referring to. The reason the iPhone Mini sold terribly is bc Apple customers are brainwashed to believe that smaller = worse and that "welp may as well buy the Pro Max version every year even though I never use the Pro features bc iPhones are just a status symbol anyway"
Got a 13 mini and a Zenfone 10, I will rock them until I die or the next small phone comes out, whichever first.
@@rdmz135 If 6 million is "sold horribly" for you, I don't know what would you call Sony sales. Sony sells like 3 million devices in total each year.
Im still using an XZ2 Compact and it still holds pretty well
Using my 12 mini for 3 years. Looking for an upgrade this year/2025. What are your recommendations?
Ah yes watching uncle spurt cracking mum jokes on my day off
I've been using a Jelly Star for about a month now and it's been a decent enough experience. If it was maybe 3.5" or 4" I think it'd probably be almost perfectly sized.
quite honestly when I saw the nothing phone 2A on photos I could not comprehend its size and still can't. it still looks like a 6in phone at most, mainly due to that camera
Watching on my xperia xz1 compact 📱just bought a google pixel 4a compact, will start using it this week. A phone without a headphone socket, is like buying an 80k porsche without a cup holder..
People really want companies to make mini phones, but then people really don't want to buy them.
There is a demand from a million people. That's a really small number and you just happen to bump into them.
@@sexyscientist true that, unfortunately
Bambi: The Reckoning, sounds like a drama series about Jimmy Savile featuring Steve Coogan rofl
Best of luck making it through the rest of April lol
tech spurt is for compact phones yay
I saw somewhere that Pixel 9 is coming in at 6.03”
I would get over my disgust for the Tensor (read: Exynos) chip and buy that one.
I need that sony Xperia micro mini..!!! Can we crowd fund it Sony??!! Do you accept kidneys, lungs or limbs?!
What would you do with that?
Sorry Uncle Spurt but tech question: I've bought a Motorola Edge phone - excellent, incidentally - but I'm still sitting on Android 13. How often do Moto actually do OS updates as this feels way out of sync?
1:24 Although do you want to ditch the IP rating?
haha speaking of compact phones, I got a Google Pixel 7a on Contract (got another 17 months before it's fully mine haha). Thank you for your reviews man. Super informative, if a bit crass lol.
17 months are you insane 😂
Love the intro... welcome to my life! Love my Iphone mini 13 but fed up of folks thinking I'm pissed when spaffing out a txt fast and fucking up the txt on the small KB
What phone were you using in the video?
Just a wondering requisition question, would you collab with mkbhd & supersaff
I think the small phone niche will be better served by the clam-shell phones, as they get the advantages of their bigger cousins ( bigger battery, bigger display, better colling) while also being usable one handed by simply opening them halfway. Also the Xperia have a function to lower the screen of a few cm and help reaching the higher parts of the ui. Also AnySoftKeyboard have a function to move the keyboard sideways to use it one handed
Your superpower could be *"kebab breath,"* that could melt through anything. A handy power in a sticky situation!!
I definitely miss the 90's trend of small phones with weeks of battery life. It seems these days that phones are getting bigger with every iteration and improvements in battery technology are just eaten up by needlessly overpowered processors.
And the fact that apple made everyone make the display the phone! Even oled (which I worked on) is burning that battery when in a 6" or larger display with the ridiculous ppi these days (that we can't resolve with our eyes but the marketing guys say has to be super 8k HD etc). But what do we engineers know. It's an arms race, cpu and display, and battery, and the battery tech is losing 🥺
... aren't the standard pixels on the smaller end?
Almost all small phone only have low specs. Need small phone with midrange - high end specs
I'd never heard of 'Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey before watching this, best thing I've googled in a while 😂
Uncle tech, I'm sure you've explained it somewhere. Why does Sammy do that different chipset based on region?
You're in top form here spurt! 😂
If Nothing actually produced a Micro phone, I would buy it so fast. I never bought their other phones entirely because they're all too big to consider.
The Sony Xperia Compacts phone are certified legends, such a shame we're not seeing them anymore nowadays
Nah, just be yourself much better Uncle Spurt. I sub (back in 2020) just because no other tech review would talk spontaneously
Happily watching this on xz2 compact! There is no replacement for this..
Would you do a TSW in the style of Geordie jeans adverts ?
I still have my Sony XZ2 Compact, and my Rakuten Mini C330 which are both mini phones
Is that Oppo F25 Pro?
I just watch for the humour tbh, couldn't care less about phones
It seems like the folding/flipping phones are our only options for pocket rockets. It's not the worst option. They're compact stuffed in your pants and can size up when pulled out, for your pleasure. Just waiting for the day when it doesn't have to be all dinged up and faulty in the screen before it's within my budget
4:44 yes, yes... YES!!!!
Actually.. I find myself watching this video after I saw a Sony advertising that showing this micro Experia phone..
Speaking of small phones I remembered with nostalgia the days when I had an Xperia Z3 Compact, a true flagship those days, but searching online I found out it was 10 years ago, and felt like the old c@ck I am :(
I've said this before... I had a Sony Xperia L3 & damn, I miss that phone, it was compact & just a delight to use, plus the camera was awesome, I still look at photos taken with the L3 on my Oppo Find X5 Pro & gush over the quality.
I'm still upset to this day that Sony got rid of the L series...
Any chance you could do a TSW with a Biker Grove theme? I know you are from Sunderland and it's a show for Geordies but I would love to see you in a red curly wig in the style of Spuggy!
i would genuinlely love a phone the size of the zenfone 10 with the camera power of the xiaomi 14 ultra (my current phone lol, massive thing that)
Base iPhones are smaller and more powerful than ZenFone 10 but yeah the battery life ain't as good.
@@haruyanto8085 the base iphone is 6.1 inches while the zenfone 10 is 5.8 so no, they aren't smaller.
it's kind good to be out of 2018. lewis hamilton isn't winning anymore but the biritsh commentators are still beating off over him every race.
How about Samsung Z Flip 5 which can fold?
My Rakuten Mini is ideal in terms of size.
Please review OnePlus Nord CE 4
Who is all-rounder phone (30k) Bangladesh ?
All geared up and ready for Fallout on Prime?
I'm fearing when my iPhone 13 mini dies, I really don't like any of the phones that are 6"+
I now just watch ur videos while going to sleep 🥱😴 💤 🌃🌌
"Political Spurt" has a great ring to it
Yeah those micro phones would be a good idea but the battery would be naff given everything else that's gonna have to go inside them maybe they could get around it by having 2.500 mah in the phones then make a battery case for it with another 2.500 mah giving the phone 5.000 mah total but yeah I'm all for it the np2a looked epic don't know if you know uncle spurt but unihurtz have a dinky android phone called the jelly that has led' on the back like the np' kind of.
The last compact phone imo were the Oppo Find N2 (5.54 inches) in 2022 and the iPhone 13 mini (5.4 inches) in 2021
And the iPhone mini ended up with less than 3% of total sales of the 13 range. Everybody wants them apparently, but nobody buys them
I’d love a micro phone
Nooooo! I love smaller phones. I wanted to get the Unihertz Jelly, but it is unsupported in my lame country.
Still using Galaxy s10e as my daily driver
thank god this video is not at 1st April
I hear ya - I have an old, dead Xperia X Compact which I occasionally pick up and marvel at how small (better) it is compared to what I have now. BRING BACK PROPER COMPACT PHONES! Instead of this "mine's bigger" mentality that has prevailed for the past 5-6 years (which has felt like an eternity). And in case you're doubting my small phone credentials, pre-smartphones I had a Samsung X830 then an F210...
Question for next week.
Uncle Spurt, first time mentioning wife. Wy have we never seen that woman? Is she the one operating the camera? 😊 my question to you Mr Spurt, are you exited for the new Samsung galaxy ring? Are you going to make a review of that one?. PS: in Norway it is still snowing. The rain would be a blessing.
Blood and Honey 2 is the greatest redemption arc in recent memory
"pocket rocket" lmao
xz1-2 compact still good enough
I have a feeling that women are designing all the new phones these days...
They get bigger and bigger, and the vibration gets stronger and stronger...😅
You can cram more things into a larger phone.
I'd buy that wi-man Sony any day off the week
Talk about Motorola edge 50 Pro
Hi Mr Spurt,
40? Fecking 40? Your having a laugh.
On the subject of pop up cameras I'm still using the ridiculously named Oppo Reno 10x zoom, I keep going to get a new phone but I just can't part with the 10x zoom.
I'm so desperate for a small phone I used to have a Unihertz Jelly 2. Fun device.
Was soooooo looking forward to the Zenfone 11. Fucking shame
Nothing should release a 5.7 inch smartphone 🤔📱
I really wanted the Nothing 2a to be smaller, but didn't happen 😞 I'l stick with my Galaxy s23 for now 🙂
Iphone 13mini is just perfect
Woody Wonka....Tech Spurt
What about the Pixel 8
not compact, i held one, not small at all
I loved my Xperia mini phones! Lack of Sony updates and subsequent poor Sony models forced me to Google pixel. Never looked back from there, but if Google did a mini I'd get it.
First
No meaningful massage, loving your work, you replaced unbox therapy, mrwhosyourboss and mkbhd for me
Not sure about mrwhosyour boss but unbox therapy and mkbhd no longer state ACTUAL facts or do ACTUAL reviews, anymore. They mostly just get sponsored which is a shame because they used to try.
instead of small phone i would like to have a 8 to 8.5 inch screen phone. the bigger the better. still feel 6.8 is too small for me
WHERE IS ONEPLUS NERD CE 4 REVEW
Yah the mini phones april fools was annoying. That convinced me they were truly dead.
You should honestly do a collab with Mrwhosetheboss. It'd be funny to see what comes out of it.
I don't understand why people say that the smallest phone is the Samsung S24 or the Asus Zenfone 10 the Xperia 5v is smaller. I know it is taller but that's not the important thing in hand feel, the important thing is the width, that's what you feel when you grab it. And the Sony is the narrowest.
... your superpower would still be better than black widow's ...
Try iPhone 13 Mini. It really exists.
@niszure yeah but to tell the truth: you get use of the display it’s really a good panel. You don’t really realize in daily life that’s not 120 hz refresh rate. You will LOVE to use an iPhone in that pocket friendly size!
Been using it ,smooth animations and in such compact device having 60hz only wont affect much imo
I would like to have a small phone, I do not care if it has only one camera sensor.
SHENANIGANS ^^ Small phones will come back I'm sure of it ;)
Just read an article online dated Dec 2023 saying Sony were going to move away from their Xperia phones and start a new line of Sony "blowers".
With your ears to the ground and your insider knowledge, is there any truth to the rumour? And is it likely to mean cheaper but still good quality handsets?
Considering it's now APRIL but I still haven't put away winter clothing, no wonder my skin has a blue tinge.
I can't use small phones with my eyesight. Enjoy Morocco, Take sun-screen.
how tf u gonna watch movies or typing in that freaking small phones😬😬
