    Did mine last week. With 14” wheels I didn’t jack it up or pull the wheels off at all just turned them out of the way. Did it in the driveway and had them both done in 20 minutes. I put on KYB shocks and didn’t have to beat anything on/off. The back shocks were even easier…all four took about an hour. Also have no idea what “aviation snips” are…I call them tin snips.

    Exhaust clamp the top of your coil to the bucket, or make a tab to bolt onto the coil bucket to keep the coils in place.

      Ya I’ve thought about that. It really only does it on the driver side where the diff is. I’ve got a new coil isolated, too..wondering if that will help

    I just changed all my shocks on my 1996 ranger splash. had all the original shocks on the truck. Completely rusted bolts. They wouldn’t budge. Used penetrating oil, impact gun, etc etc. most of the bolts just snapped off. Had to replace bolts. That was the hardest part of the job. New shocks are night and day from the factory 27 year old shocks.

    Good video. I have to change my shocks cause I think the shocks on my truck are factory from 2004 😂 I just recently purchased my 2004 XLT from an older gentleman who took care of it. It only has 85K miles and the other day I heard some weird rattle, clunking sounds. When I checked, I found all the bushings from the sway bar end links had left the chat 😂😂😂.

    An old trick to keep the spring from popping out is to install a J hook on the top of the coil bucket. Might make a good video..

      Ya I was looking into those. I’m also looking into swapping the bottom coil retainer washer. The spring has a lot of play when when the suspension bottoms out. Ordered new lower coil insulators, too. I’ll do a video on that soon

    I would love to see a video from you about installing the Rough Country four inch lift. I have a 97 4wd, basically the same as yours. I'm pretty interested in getting that kit and there's not a lot of good install videos. It's either really bad quality and you can't see what's going on or its one of those guys who gets it done but doesn't take the time to do anything right.

      20 years ago I would have said Camburg. They don’t have the parts on their website anymore but it’s worth giving them a call. They’ve moved on to newer things, but I bet they could still build you some stuff. AutoFab has also been around forever

    I have a 96 Ranger 4wd and tried doing the exact same install today, same parts and everything. Started on the driver's side, the coil spring is in and the bottom of the shock is on. But the top of the shock is giving me problems - I slid the bottom washer and bushing on the shock and got that through the top hole. But when I put the top washer and bushing on, there's no thread visible to start the nut, even with the truck lifted on a jack from the main arm. Any suggestions? Maybe how to compress the shock or something to get some thread visible on the top? I noticed yours seemed to go on really smoothly.

    • @rayregnogarage
      @rayregnogarage  Рік тому +2

      Interesting. What if you tried doing the top mount first, like I did? Unbolt the bottom and then get the top nut started. Then you can droop out the suspension and get the bottom shock mount on. I think it has something to do with the angles and that's why I struggled with the bottom. Having the bottom bolted on first may be making it tricky to get the right angle to go in the top mount. You might be catching a thread and that's why it won't go up all the way. Be careful not to force it as you might strip the threads if it's catching on on the frame.
