Great vid and thanks!
I've owned a 2003 Ranger since new and do all repairs. My one piece of advice.
A week before you plan on doing this R&R, spray the bolts down with Liquid Wrench (or similar) every two days beforehand and drive over some bumpy roads.
Makes things ALOT easier to pop the nuts & blots when the time comes.
I appreciate the information being conveyed, but also how it's presented in a straighforward, clearly spoken manner, with no attempt at comedy or the presenter trying to make himself the centre of attention. So refreshing.

You're the type of mechanic I'd want to work on my truck. So many people just use raw metal to rip the hubcaps off and scratch the hell out off the mags. I appreciate your technique with the taped tool.
+Nick Feness Thanks for the feedback!
I like that you tape the screwdriver blade to prevent damage to the wheel. My OEM lug wrench has rubber on the tip for this purpose.
Just got a '99 Ranger and I notice it's quite a bumpy ride. Definitely a good tutorial and affordable parts too! Thanks very much for the info!
Thank you for watching and leaving great feedback! +Colby Sinor
Nice succinct yet comprehensive video. Thanks!
great videos ford ranger repair at my finger tips thank you
Thanks for the video guys. I replaced front and rear shocks on my 2008 3.0L Ford Ranger today. Great tip to double up on wrenches to remove the top nut! Mine both snapped off about 3/4 of the way up due to rust swelling. Bottom nuts on the driver side snapped off immediately, but had to ratchet off the passenger side fully. A few taps with a 4lb hammer to the bottom of the shock freed everything well after bolt removal. I cleaned the mount points with brakleen after dismount. The driver shock exploded on me after dismount, but could have been due to twisting during removal. Just a reminder to never point the shock ends towards your face during analysis post-dismount! I also had to Jack up the lower control arm to get the angle right to mount the low-end of the shock. I'm in Canada where rust is a reality of life, so the lower nut on the top part of the shock was 17-18mm, depending on rust swelling (and needed to be hammered on!).
+Sam Long Thanks for the tips and taking the time to share!
Just bought, a ford with the same shock, GREAT VIDEO,
As a point of information, if you have struts and not shocks (struts have springs around them) you cannot access the large nut at the top of the shock to hold it when removing the top nut. It is very difficult to remove this nut since the entire shock will turn and they are usually rusted. Vice Grips sometimes work but it is very difficult.. This is my suggestion: Don't spend hours trying to get this nut off. Get a reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade and just cut the stud off below the nut. This takes 5-10 minutes and saves much agony and time. You could do it with a hacksaw but it will take a little longer. Work smarter not harder.

Thank you so much brother
Just saved me a lot of swearing. Thanks!
The same thing could be said for pretty much any part that you're going to be replacing anyways . No point trying to keep it in perfect shape unless you plan on reusing it .
AWSOME VIDEO, STEP BY STEP, YOU got right to the POINT, GREATTTTTTTT
+J Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com

Thanks guys!
Love 1A auto
My new shocks say I need to support the lower control arm while doing this, is that true to save the cv joint from bending too far?
Mines are surrounding by a big sprint and they are making noise from the button part of the shocks when they get rain water do you think replacement will be necessary?
Question after that do I have to do the alignment? Please let me know when you have time thanks
what ft lb do you screw the top screws to? cant seem to find on car specs
Love these videos great detail
+Abram Ruelas Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
My old shocks d9 not have a nut where you pounded on the wrench mine is a round piece there.
Bolt holes do not line up on studs on my 1999 toes ranger xlt 2wd supercab any ideas on what to do all other shocks have the same hole on them
Does the car need to be lowered and suspension level when torquing the shocks?
my truck squeaks every time i go over a little bump or anything and i just changed the swaybar links. could my shocks be going baf
How can I tell when the upper bolt is tight enough? Is there a tongue spec?
Heyyyyyy, the rubber grommet’s have 2 sides. Very different…. What’s the proper way to install. If both are different, which way to install is correct.😢
Thanks
Does anyone know the bolt torque specs??
Do these things leak? I have a 97 ranger that's leaking some fluid from the front and back. Kind of looks like the shocks
+CesarTns They can if they're old. If they do it's a sign they need to be replaced
Hi, Can replace the shocks without removing the tire or will it be more difficult and more work? Thanks
+Juan Gomez good question, based on the steps removing the wheel to gain access to the strut or shock is recommended.
All pretty EASY with a brand new lower control arm with PRE loosened shock nuts. For average people this is a hell of a lot HARDER, especially if your truck has over 200k miles running on original shocks.
Changing my gfs front and possibly rear shocks pretty quick here. Any suggestions to make it easier? I've done all the suspension on my tacoma but it's in better shape than her ranger
Just did mine at 260,000 and it wasn't bad at all. I have the fx4 with Ranchos so had to grind the top bolt bit otherwise no issues
Mine truck has springs on them, is the procedure the same or a little different?
+Nibboi Andrew We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task.
dude i swear i just seen you at the festival in Ponta Delgada
Does it not have springs?
Hi there. Do I need an alignment after changing shock absorbers?
No you do not
Thanks, brother. That was my question, too.
Good day...! Namibian dollars how much shocks absorber and stabilizer for 2.5 ford ranger 2013 model front parts?
Canada: substitute torch for all wrenches
For reals
What do you mean?
@@cheaptricked3148 hella rust
Can I removing and replace my shocks without putting the truck on a lift or jacks??
No. You need to have the suspension free from any load. The wheels need to be off the ground.
Hi, I have the same question. Were you able to get the shocks replaced? If so, did you have to remove the tires? Thanks
Do you deliver parts to Canada?
+Michael Carletti Yes, there is a shipping cost. Thanks for checking us out!
It looks like the truck had new control arms and new rack why didn't the shocks get replaced?
I hit a little dip on the road and when the vehicles suspension compresses and the pops up to decompress it makes a hard hit noise or something. Do I need new absorbers? Almost like somethings going to pop off idk.
Jayzc66 same has it been fixed yet?
I’ll let y’all know this weekend, I have the same problem and have replaced the entire front suspension except shock absorbers.
From my understanding it is possible from the shock contacting the frame from the bushings being worn out
The trouble I had, was there were two different types of shocks. One for coil spring type suspension, and a different one for the torsion bar suspension. I ended up with the wrong pair, and had to go back to get the proper ones.
Mine has coilovers
I've done this to 3 rangers without removing the tires lol.
+Juan Gomez Thanks for watching! You can do that, but removing the tires will make the job much easier.
did not work on my 07 ranger sport
+ADV Nevada We are sorry to hear this was not the same on your '07 Ranger. While the steps may be similar, there can be differences between different trim levels of vehicles for repairs like this. 1aauto.com
Hi, any tips on that job? I am planning on replacing the shocks on my 2010 ranger sport RWD. Thanks
Heigth of shocks please..
Very important to me
+Panda Ruiz Thanks for checking us out! We do not have the measurements available, however, they will be built to exact OE specifications as long as they are listed to fit your vehicle. 1aauto.com
Why do the "1A Auto" shocks look 1/3 ?? smaller in the cylinder diameter. Another ,Made in China, cheaper/substandard to oem specs ?? Good video though
TORQUE SPECS anyone????
For 1998 to 2010 upper shock mounting nut should be 30 to 41 ft-lbs. Lower shock mounting nut should be 15 to 21 ft-lbs. For the 2011 year the numbers are 35 ft-lbs for the upper and 18 ft-lbs for the lower.
@@boxedowl Thanks
I thought he just used the rachet and his arm strength. I don't think he used any specific torque.
Great vid, now come do mine! I'll let you do it for free since you can record it and make money on UA-cam 😂
Anything that is hidden in an explanatory video is problematic. Shadows do not work well here. I know you know what you are doing but for the market you claim you need better lighting. You can't afford any miscommunication.
+kowhort Thank you for checking us out, and the feedback. We certainly agree and will ensure that future videos are updated. 1aauto.com
Be nice if you keep the common sense easy steps out of your vids. If you can't take a tire off, don't work on autos.
