The directors were wachowski brothers at the time. Now both of them changed their gender and became wachowski sisters. They really wanted the blonde girl to be a girl in real life and be a boy in the matrix. And the studios at that time thought it was too radical for the audiences in 1999 and they had to scrap that idea.
      They sisters were really visionaries.

I was a student at film school in Sydney (Australia) when The Matrix was being produced there. The hype surrounding the film was about as thick in the air as it gets, especially because they used a smart marketing campaign with the phrase "What is the Matrix?" showing up in just enough places for you to wonder wtf was going on. It was on some giant advertising billboards, but it also appeared around the city in graffiti on walls and stencil spray painted on the footpath, making it feel really real and local, not at all part of a Hollywood movie ad campaign. So by the time we went to the premiere at the biggest cinema in Sydney, you can imagine what an impact this spectacular film had on everyone... It was really something!

Right. This is one of the rare movies where the trailer does actually does it's job right. The whole first part of the movie is deliberately kept as vague as the advertisement up to the reveal moment and it usually takes several minutes to actually comprehend the situation. Especially back then. Nowadays we have several movies about simulations and virtual or alternative worlds so it's no longer something special that nobody would expect.

FUN FACT:- The Matrix trilogy, particularly "The Matrix Revolutions", has indeed drawn inspiration from the Upanishads, which are a collection of ancient Indian Hindu philosophical texts¹².
The concept of "Maya" or illusion, a central theme in the Upanishads, is mirrored in the Matrix. The Matrix is depicted as a computer-generated dream world designed to control humans, which parallels the Hindu belief of "Maya" as the world being not as it seems¹.
The character Neo's journey of self-discovery and questioning of reality is reminiscent of Arjuna's doubts and questions in the Bhagavad Gita, a part of the Indian epic Mahabharata¹.
Moreover, the soundtrack "Navras" from "The Matrix Revolutions" incorporates verses from the Upanishads. These verses, chanted in the original Sanskrit language, add depth and spirituality to the film, resonating with its exploration of reality, consciousness, and the fusion of physical and digital realms². The name "Navras" might refer to the nine "rasas" (emotions) in Sanskrit aesthetics².
So, the Matrix trilogy does incorporate elements from the Upanishads, adding a layer of philosophical and spiritual depth to its narrative¹².

New subscriber here, and may I say what a great introduction for me to your channel! I love seeing how invested you are in this movie in particular. When you mentioned smile on Tank’s (Marcus Chong) face after hearing from Morpheus after his rescue, it struck a chord with me too. The simple, genuine gesture feels so real and makes you so happy that Tank doesn’t have to worry anymore. I think Marcus’ performance is very good here!

Matrix is *the* most 1999 movie ever, not only the floaty thematic of self and identity, but the aesthetic is this perfect accumulation of what the 90s imagined the post 2000s to feel like + green tint!

Your question - Why did the Oracle tell him he was not. She gave you the clue with the VASE. "Would you still have broken it, if I hadn't said anything?"
Morpheus completed the answer. The Oracle needed Neo (the one) to walk a certain path. Neo did not need to know the path to walk it. AND would he still have walked it, if she had told him too.

    • @youdevvy
      @youdevvy 5 місяців тому +1

I don't think she ever actually says he was not the One. Neo implies it from her questions, she says he's "got the gift, but you're waiting for something", and that him or Morpheus will die later..... which puts him on the path as you say to becoming the One.

    • @lordvader199
      @lordvader199 5 місяців тому +1

You're Right. And - "NO one can tell you you're in love" ~ The Oracle.
The poster posed the question - why did she tell him...?
I reality, she alluded to it or ALLOWED Neo to believe whatever he chose to believe.
"Morpheus, the Oracle, she said..." ~ Neo (But she did not say, but I understood the question the poster was posing)@@youdevvy

Switch was originally thought to be male in real world and female inside the Matrix (switching genres), but Warner asked not to do so, 'cause it could attract some hate - that's why they made her the only one in white clothes.
Cypher is a codename for LuCIFER, the original traitor.
Trinity represents the holly trinity, as neo is an achronimous to the 'One' (the savior).
There are lots of easter eggs like this in The Matrix if you're eager to look'em up.

But before reacting to matrix 2 reloaded, you really MUST react to the animatrix (or watch on your own if you really can't).
These are 9 shorts stories on the matrix universe who helps to understand it and to elarge the universe and the lore. Actually there are only 4 of the 9 that really matters to better understand the matrix sequels :
-The second Renaissance : It's a matrix prequel which tells what happened between humans and machines and why the matrix was created
    -A kid's story : Origin story of a new character in matrix 2 & 3
-Last flight of the Osiris : It's an introduction to matrix reloaded, litterally a couple of hours before.
Btw, matrix 2 (reloaded) and matrix 3 (revolutions) are actually a 4 hours film cut in two parts (they were shot back to back) and this is why they were both released the same year with only a 6 months gap. A little bit like the lord of the rings wich were shot back to back as well.
Can't wait to see your reactions to the matrix sequels (and perhaps animatrix) :)
So the right order to watch the matrix saga is :
    -the matrix (1999)
    -the animatrix (2003)
    -the matrix reloaded (2003)
    -the matrix revolutions (2003)

Just FYI, Cypher wasn't an "imposter", he was a TRAITOR. An imposter is someone whom infiltrates your ranks already working for the enemy, whilst a traitor is someone whom was already with you and then betrays you to the enemy, which is of course far worse than a mere imposter.

Dude, you gotta watch the sequels. As others have pointed out you're invested enough to understand details. You picked up on the deeper messages and engaged with the concepts.
Your comment about them both being empty blew my mind. "You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind"
Neo let it ALL go. All the self limiting thoughts. His mind was Empty.
Smith is a computer program, an empty shell. A full mind but nothing else.
You'll most likely understand the later movies better then most did on first watch. If nothing else they are impressive action movies.
I was 12or13 when this came out and the the surface level stuff was wild enough, most the nuance and philosophy was lost on me.
You asked to be told if you missed anything, I think you got most of it. Someone else mentioned the Wachowskis having transitioned since this was released, in the original draft the character Switch switched genders in the Matrix. That in conjunction with Morphius explaining Neo didnt have ports when in the Marix becuse Neo was appearing as his minds eye saw himself makes the trans subtext pretty obvious in retropect.
Other then that I've been told the book Simulacra and Simulation by Jean Baudrillard was required reading for the cast by the Wachowskis. I've never gone that deep myself, but after you see the resr maybe just find a philosophy nerd on youtube talking about it.

In answer to your question. You'll want to watch the sequels. Everyone does. But if you are thinking you are going to get the same experience as you got from this one I am sorry to disappoint. The problem is this movie filled your head with 1,000 possibilities as to what is was really referring to. The sequels pick one (the stupidest) and run with it, destroying all the better choices in the process if you let them. They have some moments but are also largely forgettable. 20 years later you'll be racking your brain (like I am) trying to remember what they were about. The first one, however, is now imprinted in your head. And you are going to see red pill scenarios forever after everywhere you look.
The best sequels you could watch though is not from this franchise. They are 2 movies that came out before THE MATRIX and one in particular that may have inspired it. That would be John Carpenter's THEY LIVE from the mid 80s. The other though (from the early '90s) is another true masterpiece of film making that tells about the real Matrix. It is Oliver Stone's epic biopic, JFK. It is oddly never reacted to. But it should be. It's really really good.

I'm glad you're noticing the parallels between AI in the stories narrative and our modern age of AI, but that's not actually what the film is referring to. To be more accurate, *in a sense* it is what the film is referring to, but *not ultimately.* It has a double meaning.
A.I. (on the surface) refers to technology
A.I. (True meaning) refers to the human heart/mind. We "gave birth" to "a.i". It's saying our own way of reasoning has constructed a fictional view of reality that we have cleverly reinforced with intellectual reasoning. We produced "AI". What is "AI" short for?... You might now see where I'm coming from as to the hidden meaning of what "AI" means...
What is the actual truth that we are hiding from ourselves through the way we choose to reason? *GOD'S EXISTENCE. The existence of the supernatural realm.*
We are "asleep" to these things, and we reinforce this slumber by "the enlightenment"/intellectual reasoning of the modern age, which is represented and embodied by the character "The Analyst" from The Matrix 4 movie, who also has a double meaning behind his character.
You said before that you wanted to choose the red pill. The two pills are two different states of consciousness, two different types of "wisdom", One being the knowledge of God, and the other being the "wisdom" of the world. Here are the two pills: 🔴🔵
    1 Corinthians 1:21-29
21For after that in *THE WISDOM* of God 🔴 the world *BY WISDOM* 🔵 *knew not God,* it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching 🔴 to save them that believe.
22For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
The Jewish people who have rejected Christ along with unbelievers who are not associated with the rest of the world generally speaking have a specific mindset 🔵 that causes them to stumble over the truth 🔴.
23But we preach Christ crucified, unto the *Jews a stumblingblock,* and unto the *Greeks foolishness;* 🔴
24But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and *THE WISDOM 🔴 of God.*
25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26¶For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many *wise men AFTER THE FLESH 🔵,* not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise 🔴; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 🔴
28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29That no flesh should glory in his presence.
Romans 8:7 - Because the carnal mind 🔵 is *enmity against God:* for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
The mindset of the world, by its very nature, opposes/resists God, resulting in slumber.
1 Corinthians 2:14 - But *the natural man 🔵 receiveth not* the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Think about your car, or A car if you don't drive. Think about how much space it takes up on the road as it drives to its destination. Think about sitting in the driver's seat of the car. You could quite easily reach across the passenger seat and touch the other door, couldn't you? Now think about a bus. Think about the Bus driving down the same road on which the car travels. Imagine yourself sitting on the bus, with your forehead against the cold glass. Imagine yourself looking around the bus. Think about how far away the opposite window is from you. Could you reach across the bus and touch the other side? Why do four seats and an aisle fit in a bus that drives on the same road that accommodates a car with only two seats and a little center console? Is this just a computing error? How is it possible?

Definitely watch the sequels. They're as ideologically important and as deep in meaning as the first one. Only their meanings are not that obvious and more coded than in the first movie. Also sequels have even more and even better action. Then watch 'The Animatrix'' (2003) and then watch this analysis if you really want to take the RED PILL yourself ua-cam.com/video/AaDqNDLpZa8/v-deo.html
