I'm glad you liked it. This blew us away in 1999. The film has CGI, but also a lot of brand new practical effects. Movies nowadays wouldn't bother with the practical effects. By the way, the concept of the Matrix was inspired by "The Allegory of the Cave" by Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher. Of course, "The Allegory of the Cave" more of a thought experiment, not a story.
It's also inspired by Hinduism and Buddhism. The theory that this world isn't our actual home, but only a temporary prison is prevalent in many religions. In the third movie, Neo also realizes that the "real" world outside the Matrix is just a different kind of matrix, and he transcended that one too, "hacked" it as it were. Which is why he could see even when his eyes were destroyed. Makes you wonder how many layers of Matrix are there?
Actually Plato was just one of many philosophers and sages who have claimed the same kind of thing -- check out Lao Tzu, Rumi, Ghazali, even Shakespeare ("All the world's a stage" etc.
There is a lot but most the concept is from the book Simulation and Simulacra. Every actor needed to pass a test that they understanded the concept of mainly that book and only Fishburne got it at first try 😅 Srill yes there is a lot of other inspirations in it. Just Alice in Wonderland is one.
Yes, the Wachowski's (writers) said originally The Matrix was based off Plato's cave and certain movies (like 2001:A space oddyssey, blade runner etc). Nowadays, they say it's a Tran Allegory as they are both Trans since The Matrix came out 24 yrs ago.
@@BobbaDons yes I know who they are and I know they have given million differend inspirations for the trilogy and hopped with the main-source for it. Still, it clearly is based on Simulation and Simulacra when they put the actors to read it as the Main book to understand the idea of the thing.

I saw it as a young adult when it came out in theaters and it really changed my life and how I think about my place in this world. I think it changed a lot of people's lives. This is a powerful movie with many different powerful messages...on top of that it was AMAZING to watch!!! Easily one of the best movies of all time. It instantly became a classic when it was released.
Should definitely check out CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON (2000)

I've seen this movie so many times, it's easy to forget what it was like for the very first time. My reaction was very similar to your reactions. This reaction was a lot of fun, glad you enjoyed this one.
Rewatching it through fresh eyes, it’s easy to forget just how in the dark the viewer is about “What is the Matrix?” You don’t even know exactly how sci fi the movie is, and it ratchets it up so gradually most viewers are basically just worried Neo’s going to jail.
“Tell us! I want to know too! We need answers!” 😂
Agent Smith is indeed Elrond from Lord Of The Rings. I am happy you watched Matrix, this movie is mind blowing!

The Oracle was right! He was not "the One". She said, "you are waiting on something... maybe your next life." He died later when he was shot in the chest. In his next life (he gets reincarnated instantly) he IS the One. Suddenly he can: see the code, fight Agents one-handed, doesn't need to dodge bullets, he just stops them in the air, ...and can FLY!

This movie was inspired by Hong Kong action movies, Japanese anime, and a lot of philosophy (both Eastern and Western philosophy). This is merely the first. A lot of people do not like the other Matrix films (The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and the most recent The Matrix Resurrections (which came out in 2021), there is also an animated series of short films called The Animatrix that fills in a lot of backstory. Personally, these films are in my top five favorite film franchises of all time. So glad you guys liked this one!
The sequels should be watched together in one sitting as they should be taken as a part 1 and 2, the Animatrix is one of the best animated films of all time. This film is also deeply inspired by queer culture; Neo is the Princess who needs loves true kiss to wake him up, the red pill is a reference to the estrogen medication trans people like the Witchowskis took in the 90s, and Trinity is the knight in shining armor who literally kills the first agent in the history of man kind. This movie is fucking awesome.

This one got them amped for sure! Naveed’s whistling made me smile, reminded me of going to see this one in theaters. People were pumped like that back when it came out, too! Keanu Reeves is a great action star, and by all reports a very chill, humble guy in real life. Of course, the John Wick quad is the next thing to put on their lists!
I remember going to cinema to watch this movie and not knowing anything about it. I though it would be just a random action movie before Neo took the red pill.

I recall I watched this in a cinema in 1999 when I was about sixteen. When we walked out of the cinema, we were all so blown away from the movie. I remember looking around and thinking "Am I seeing the real world? Or am I in The Matrix too?"

The day The Matrix was released I went with a group of friends to watch Natural Born Killers, but that was sold out, so we chose The Matrix. I knew nothing about it. Had seen no trailer. And the only seats available were on the front row, so my neck was jammed back to see the whole screen. When they zoomed into the letters it felt like I was inside The Matrix too. And not once in the whole movie did I think outside the movie. One of my favourite movies ever, till this day.

The scene where Neo bends backwards to dodge the bullets is so iconic. It was even spoofed in a Shah Rukh Khan movie! If you've seen Main Hoon Na, you might remember it.
Just to protect these gentle souls... don't make them watch the sequels, lmao.

The Matrix is a movie that will stay with you for life. Their excitement in seeing this movie for the first time is so infectious that I’m beaming from ear to ear as well.
I like how they were asking about the possibility of using mobile phone to escape rather than land lines. It shows the difference in thinking for the younger generation. Can’t wait to see what other movies you will show them. ❤

Love the 1st Matrix film, it's #1 in the series/franchise.
The 2nd is my least favorite, #3 in the series/franchise. The 3rd is #2. I've never watched the 4th, no opinion; just never watched it.

I never thought this movie would age significantly but.... fact is, there are no more phone booths. Wierd...
Anyway it was amazing to watch this movie together with Naveed and Mansoor. I love how they get so into it. Now let's move on to "Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions". And please... don't forget to let them listen to the end credit music after Revolutions. A piece of truly amazing music.

Loved your reaction to this flick. Almost identical to mine when I first saw it. If you liked this one, you'll like "Dark City". Came out the year before and has some similarities but VERY different and just as much fun to watch.
I worked in the Sydney CBD and watched them film lots of this movie. I previously worked in the building where Neo’s office is (Australia Square), watched the two people hanging from the helicopter outside my off ice window for about a week and I used to be a regular at the nightclub where he first meets Trinity (Black Market). I love how one of the first skills Neo learns is Drunken Boxing haha.
You guys misunderstood it completely. You say that he entered matrix but before that he was living a normal life as a computer programmer and hacker. Hehe. Quite opposite. His “regular” life was a simulation (matrix) created by A.I. as to keep people unaware of their state of being enslaved.

I enjoyed it just as much as the two of you, when I saw it in 1999, in the Theatre when I was 31 years old, and it's been the greatest movie of the last 24 years in my honest opinion, nothing else comes close! So many films have copied elements of The Matrix, but none have been like it!

In English, there is a computer term called a "cookie" which keeps track of what you search for and watch on the internet. Therefore, it's a computer joke when the Oracle gives Neo a Cookie. Also, Neo means New, and when you switch the letters around he is the One. Get it? Neo. One.
😂😂😂I love their little happy dance for neo's good moments. So entertaining to watch their ups and downs. Please show them some martial arts movies too. Might I suggest Ip Man...the whole series I'm sure they would enjoy the action and cheography as well as the strong storyline! Big thumbs up!❤
When I first saw this, I was hoping for a few more more superman references, but I'm sure DC comics would not allow it. Telephone booths. Bullets bouncing off him. Flying. A different variation of Neo, but someone everyone had heard of, and was a legend written off as a mere comic book character by the machines so that no one would believe it.
They could have described Budda, Christ, Mohammad, Hercules and others as the previous "ones" as well, but they left it alone so that everyone could think of their own take on it. Rather brilliant move, actually.
